New York Islanders Postgame Availability | NYI 5 vs VGK 4

Well, little back and forth. Um, no, I thought we played well. Um, obviously late got into a little penalty trouble there, but uh did a great job on the kill. Sroi some big saves when we needed them. Um, and then Sroi huge in the shootout. How did special teams play a factor in this one, of course, killing off that penalty in overtime and also getting a power play goal there. Yeah. Um, you know, we gave that one up late, kind of ended the power play, but uh some big kills. Um, you know, that power play goal I thought, uh, put us in a real good spot. Um, so it’s huge. I I think PK has been doing a pretty good job lately. Um, PP showed up for some big goals at big times and, you know, I think, uh, in this league nowadays, you need your special teams to be good and, um, can be a difference maker. Just Roen came up big so many times tonight. Just his contributions in this victory. Well, first start of the week. Um, no, he’s he’s been playing he’s been playing unreal. Um, big saves when we need it. Um, feel like that gives our our group some life, some juice when when he’s making saves like that. I feel like he’s just locked in and uh obviously gives us a lot of confidence um when we see him like that. What have you noticed in terms of the increased confidence in third periods and also in the shootout as of late? Yeah, no, I think just positioning. Um, he’s aggressive. Um, you know, just in the right spot making big saves. Um, you know, I feel like he uh he’s ready. He’s ready for every puck. Playing six on four, like what is your focus? What do you have to do to make sure check players and uh try to find a pack and uh uh try to read their game, but it’s hard because a lot of players will big traffic and uh it’s hard to find puck. just I know the puck was sort of bouncing there at the end, but what what’s the feeling going into overtime after, you know, giving up one late, you know, they they tie it that late? Um, it’s a game. It’s a 60 minutes game. Uh, if we play against a really good team, so uh they play all 60 minutes and um we should play after this. And uh it was a little hard after we have PK again but like I say it again uh guys do unbelievable job. What’s your mindset like in the shootout? Mindset. Oh god help me and just the way the team’s playing overall you know falling behind two nothing and coming back. Just what what have you seen from the confidence from from the guys? Yeah, I think it’s uh like I said, it’s a really good uh character win for us. Uh we are up to zero nothing to to nothing and uh after uh good recover and uh play a strong game, I think. What did you see as you know Kyle gets the puck to uh Casey and he’s going behind the net. I mean, I saw you just go in established position and get your stick ready, right? Yeah, I mean what a what a play by Casey. I mean, I could have scored that lefty probably. That was He put that thing on a platter, so credit to them. I mean, I was just in the right spot. But yeah, they they’ve been playing great. Uh, obviously Casey’s been playing so good the last couple games. Uh, it’s good to see him rewarded on the the score sheet the last couple games. So, were you almost surprised that Casey was able to make a play like that? I I’ve seen him make it plenty of times. So, uh, luckily I was just ready for it. So, yeah, great play by him. just I know it was sort of a you know back and forth game but the fact that you’re getting secondary scoring here to back up Bo Horvat you know just you know how does that make the line feel and you know fit into the whole team structure there yeah it’s good uh it’s always a positive when we can contribute that way but I think like as we talked as a line our mindset just stays the same uh it’s just you know we just been working hard and I think it shows that when we get on their D it creates a a lot. So, I I think uh we’ve just been getting chances and it’s nice to see some of those go in. Patrick, sort of dealer’s choice here. Where do you want to start? Do you want to start with the penalty kill? You want to start with the Bo Horvat, the secondary scoring Yel Ilia? What what what stood out? Yeah. I mean, um first of all, how resilient we were down 02. Um but what I love about our group is we didn’t change anything. I thought we were playing well. Um, we were moving. We had great anchor in front of the net. We behind the in front of the net, going behind the net. We were controlling the puck very well. We had a lot of good looks. Um, and I thought that was um that was one of uh the thing that I I love about our guys. But resiliency was probably the the number one thing. Obviously, the penalty killing came big. Um, too bad because we killed that that six on four and then and then the the three on four in overtime. I mean that was pretty big as well. Um, you know, and and those moment Ilia made some phenomenal saves for us, kept us in. I mean it’s it’s it’s I mean they are a really good team. I mean but they you know put the puck in the pads and rebound and score what three re kind of rebound shot goals. I mean, um, that’s that’s not often you see that, but and then after that, obviously, I mean, you see the the work of of the line of Casey, the way they worked hard and then then they got that big goal, tie up the game, and then Simon got a goal for himself, which was good as well. And then Bo got two. So, I mean, uh, just to tell, you know, um, that was a team effort. I mean, in every regard of of today’s game, is there where in the lineup would Matthew Schaefer get into a shootout? Like, you know, uh, have you considered getting him into the top, you know, four or five yet? The next one was Shabanov. Yeah. So, he was not in the top five, but I’m sure he’s gonna have his moment. Um, him and Pulock both played almost 30 minutes tonight. Just what did you see from them as a pair? Yeah, they were outstanding. The player gave the the the player of the game to to Pulley and he deserved it because he played a really strong game. He was really good against I mean, come on. He played against Eel pretty much all night long. So was Schaffe and Schaefer and and and I thought they were outstanding. they were um I felt like they play with that swagger, you know, like that confidence out there and and and I think that that really helps the team. I think it’s it’s reflects on our team and the way we play and um they’ve been showing great leadership. And Holster, I I know you’ve been really happy with his defense and penalty killing, but for him to kind of get on the board there. Yeah. What can that I was surprised to hear it’s been a long time since he scored a goal. I I mean when I thought somebody said 17 games or 14 games something like this I was like wow I was sometimes you know you don’t really pay that much attention to that but uh seeing him scoring today after I knew that I’m pretty happy for him. Patrick just how’d you like that goal from the fourth line particularly Casey’s assist was a phenomenal play by Case but what I love is how they protect that puck in in the ozone. you know, they were they were spending a lot of time in the ozone and and and it was um that’s the way they’ve been playing for a while. I mean, that was uh they brought a lot of energy to our team, that intensity that they have, shift after shift after shift. I mean, um that’s impressive. Sticking with the fourth line in Gakcom, he had nine hits tonight. I mean, just what kind of spark has he provided since he’s coming into the lineup? Brings a lot of sparks. I mean, even myself, I mean, sometimes I don’t look at stats. So, I I I was in the office and I said, “Holy, seven hits already in that second period.” I mean, it was pretty impressive. So, but you know what? He’s taking advant taking advantage of the opportunity that he has and and you know Metsu and I we said this year I mean it’s has nothing to do who you are and what it’s if you’re playing better than a guy you’re going to be in the lineup and and we prove it with Sepy and him. I mean and and he’s been playing really well so we deserve to play with Dclair. Maybe the offense isn’t there but it seems like he’s doing a lot of the little things big blocks and key moments. What have you seen from Duclair without the offense? Exactly what you said. He blocks shots. He He’s having a lot of jump. I mean, uh he protects his puck. I mean, he’s reliable defensively. Um, now I’m very pleased with

Hear from Ryan Pulock, Ilya Sorokin, Marc Gatcomb, Anthony Duclair, and Patrick Roy after tonight’s win vs Vegas.

  1. I used to dislike Roy, I thought he was too easy on the boys giving replies like "we did a lot things well" after a 5-1 loss.

But man, Roy has really come into his own as a coach. Im THRILLED to have him as our coach. Patty and Darche should be able to bring the cup back to LI.
