Catching Up on the Latest Sacramento Kings Drama | Locked On Kings
There’s been a bit of drama around the Sacramento Kings over the last few days. From Zack Lavine’s comments after his 42point performance in the Kings win Miami to Sam Aim today talking about Scott Perry having to convince VC Radiv to fully commit to a rebuild. Basically kicking the Hornets’s nest amongst the Sacramento Kings fan base. Well, we’ll talk about it all right here on Locked on Kicks. You are Locked on Kings, your daily Sacramento Kings podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. And now, ladies and gentlemen, it is that time. Time for another episode of Locked on Kings. Hello and welcome into Locked on Kings, your podcast hub for Sacramento Kings coverage all season long. This episode is brought to you by FanDuel. If you want to be right in the middle of the action this season, visit fanuel.com and place your NFL live bets all season long. My name is Matt George. I have the privilege of being your host here. I’m a Sacramento sports anchor and reporter for ABC 10 News. And uh there’s been a bit of a little bit of tea, a little little tea going on around the Sacramento Kings. Nothing too drastic as you can tell. I’m trying to poke fun with it and have fun with it a little bit. It’s certainly nothing compared to some of the drama uh that we had in the Kings organization last year with everything that happened last season. So compared to that, this ain’t nothing. But a couple things uh that have happened over the last three, four days or so uh in Kingsland. One of them happening today. Sam Aix comments today uh that uh have Kings fans talking, gossiping, scared, frustrated, whatever word. You can tell me how you’re feeling based off of these two primary stories that we are are going to talk about today. Uh, again, nothing I I think that there’s there shouldn’t be really anything in this podcast to be overly concerned about, especially when talking about the VC RAD Scott Perry story. Uh, if it if it even is that from today. So I I guess I want to by addressing the the these two separate incidents, if we can even call it that, I I I guess the the point of this podcast is to reassure you that it’s not really that bad, that maybe it’s it’s it’s a talker. It’s good for a podcast, I suppose, and good for social media jabbering back and forth, but in reality, nothing’s really happened over these past few days. Nothing I would I would say uh that’s uh anything to be concerned about. Let me stop beating around the bush. Let’s just dive into uh these two completely separate circumstances that we’re going to talk about today. The first one being uh earlier, I guess this morning, Sam Aik uh appeared on a show and he was talking to former Sacramento Kings uh center Demarcus Cousins who asked him about the state of the Sacramento Kings and Sam answered the question talking about the uh this the Kings not being in a very good spot, right? talked about the Zack Lavine trade as the Kings attempt to replace the Aaron Fox with a former all-star so they could pick up right where they left off and continue to be very competitive. It’s completely blown up in their faces. And here they are at at six and 18, I think, uh, early on in this season. And then Sam dropped the line that everybody freaked out about or that that rang off a lot of alarms in Sacramento Kings fans minds. And I do not blame you for it if you were one of the people that had your alarm bell being rung. Sam said when talking about the pivot of this Kings organization to a full rebuild, which is what needs to happen. Sam talked about Scott Perry as the general manager making that transition and having to convince is the word that he used VCron a Diva to commit to a three to fiveyear rebuild or a rebuild that could take three to five years to get the Sacramento Kings back to any sort of state of prominence. And immediately that freaks people out because wait what is is VC run meddling again? He’s over involved. Like Sam even shared and and kind of slipped his opinion into the commentary and saying like VC has had a long history here in Sacramento of being over involved to the detriment of the organization. And he follows it up with with this little nugget. Kings fans freaking out because now Scott Perry has to convince VC Ron a DV it’s not going to happen. VC’s not going to fully commit. He’s never fully committed to anything. He he looks for short cuts. He tries to meddle. He gets involved. He has to have his way. Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. It was like a trauma response from Sacramento Kings fans. And again, I do not blame you. What’s funny is a little bit after that clip picked up some steam on social media and was aggregated and shared and people started reacting to it. Uh clearly both Sam and Carmichael Dave from Sackown Sports 1140 got some sort of phone call or something because they immediately ran uh to their social media platforms and Dave hopped on Sacktown Sports 1140’s midday show with Allen Styles and made sure to reiterate something that I shared pretty much verbatim if you go back a little over three weeks ago when I did the Locked on Kings podcast episode where it was a special episode where dove in completely to what I had found out and and like investigated I guess what I had pieced together that is the Sacramento Kings plan and that is that Scott Perry from what everybody has been told or from what I have been told everybody has told me Scott Perry has complete and absolute decisionmaking power as the general manager of the Sacramento Kings when it comes to basketball decisions. Scott has full control and even that VC ran not only is is 100% supportive of Scott and and and is empowering Scott to make his decisions uh for this basketball team. On top of that, VC’s kind of 100% hands off to an extent where I was even told like VC’s not even up to date with the every day things that that Scott is considering doing or has done or the conversations that he’s having with the rest of his his uh assistant general managers and the rest of his front office when deciding how to proceed going forward, right? And that’s quite honestly the way that it should be. Dave and Sam both made sure to reiterate that on on their social media platforms. It would have been absolutely foolish for Scott Perry to take this job regardless of if it’s one of 30 NBA jobs. I get it’s a prestigious job that that you get paid a lot of money to do it, but it can also be to some people or in some people’s minds it could be career suicide, especially for someone like Scott Perry who might not get another front office job period after this. Maybe is like an advisor role or something like that, but this is probably Scott Perry’s last real chance at being a general manager in the NBA. Could be wrong on that, but that’s just my interpretation. after his time with the New York Knicks, he’s bounced around as an assistant general manager. Worked at a bunch of different front offices, including the Sacramento Kings when he worked for uh Vlad Devots back in the day, but this is like his maybe final real shot at being the general manager or a general manager of an NBA team. He would have been an idiot to take this job without one as much longevity as he could possibly get in that contract to to give himself as much security as possible given the unstable nature of the Sacramento Kings organization and two without the asurances and the patience of ownership that he can execute his plan and fix this organization, fix this roster the right way. That’s the difference between Scott Perry and like a Monty McNair hiring or a Pete Delesandro hiring or even a Vlad DevOT hiring. All three of those guys firsttime general managers. They’d worked in front offices before or had some sort of basketball decision-making power before, but never the guy, never the GM. Scott’s been there, done that before, and has a reputation and a tremendous amount of experience around the league. So maybe those three guys would be a little more willing to take the opportunity without some asurances. But I guarantee you Scott did not step into this role without it being very clearly defined between him and VC Ron Dip. Because remember VC seeked him out. Perry didn’t sign up or didn’t apply for this job like he was a list of a bunch of candidates before Monty McNair was fired. We knew that Scott Perry was essentially the VC’s pick for this job. VC see him out. So, you best believe there were insuranceances in place when Monty got this job or excuse me, Scott got this job. I do believe, in fact, I know 100% that VCron would much rather the Sacramento Kings be competitive, push for playoff appearances, and sell out tickets or sell out the Golden One Center and justify the continued uptick of season ticket prices. He 100% would prefer that. But it is exactly that line of thinking that completely screwed this organization over with the De’Aran Fox deal. Hindsight is 2020, but we felt at the time the De’aran Fox trade and getting Zack Lavine in that deal and getting basically nothing from the San Antonio Spurs was a bad idea. And it’s turned out to be even worse than we initially thought. VC’s plan to get his guy, another one of his guys here in Sacramento to try and remain competitive, blew up in his face really on the night that the Kings got embarrassed on their home floor in the playin game against the Dallas Mavericks. But now it there’s been collateral damage to the first couple of months of this season where this Kings team is god awful. So I do believe of course that VC would prefer to be competitive. Hence where Sam Amik’s line to me or commentary to me makes sense. Yes, I do believe that Scott Perry did to some extent or and does to some extent have to make sure VC is understanding like this is the route that we have to go. This is what we need to do. It’s been put off for too long. This is a failure. It’s terrible. We got to blow it up and build this thing the right way. That’s what he should be doing. But I understand any Kings fan who is skeptical by anything that I’ve just said over the last eight or nine minutes, any Kings fan that is skeptical about uh Carmichael Dave and and Sam Aik like reiterating what I’ve said like I understand that there is a pattern how of how VCron Diva has ran and quite frankly meddled in this organization’s basketball decisions over the last decade and some I get it completely. I don’t tell I’m not expecting you to just have blind loyalty to ownership or anything like that. You should be skeptical. We should all look at every single move with a a little bit of skepticism. They have to prove it to us. Ownership has to prove it to us. Perry has to prove it to us that they’re doing this the right way with the proper amount of patience. But in reality, draft picks are the priority right now. Like the Kings value their draft picks substantially considering they’re not looking like they’re going to be a very good team over the next two, three years, hopefully less than that, but likely two, three years. Building in the draft is going to be the way that the Kings have to get this right, which is area that they failed consistently in over the last 20 years. They have to hit on their draft picks. Those draft picks are hot commodities around the league. And the second most important thing to the Kings would be young talent that fits the mold of uh or the identity and the the the the pillars or traits that Scott Perry has talked about and wants to establish here in Sacramento for VC. He knows this is his last chance with when it comes to the the the grace of this Kings organization or Kings fan base if they even have any left for him. He is on the thinnest of ice as it is and he and he’s a I promise you VCron is an incredibly brilliant man. He’s had a tremendous amount of se success because of how brilliant he is. He’s not brilliant in terms of a basketball mind. Not at all. But he’s a very very smart man who is very aware of the circumstance that he is in when it comes to this city and this fan base. He cannot afford to meddle and get in Scott Perry’s way and screw this up even more than it’s already been screwed up because this fan base is has just about had it, which is why they reacted so strongly to Sam Amik’s comments earlier today. So, now we’re going to go back a few days to after the Kings impressive victory in Miami over the Heat, handing the Heat just their third, I believe, home loss of the season. Zack Lavine goes absolutely bonkers in that game. Scores 42 points. Was red-hot from start to finish. 18 points in the first quarter. I think he had 29 points at halftime. Just an incredible game for Zack Lavine. a a gentleman, a reporter named Sirro AIO, I believe is how you say his name. Uh his comments on social media or his reporting on social media got a aggregated and and picked up a little bit of steam amongst King’s circles. Uh apparently Serio is with hoops hype. He tweeted out after sharing some videos of conversations that he had with Keon Ellis and I think he had a conversation with with Malik Monk. He tweeted out, no video or anything like that, but tweeted out that he while Zach was leaving the locker room and Zack Leavine was walking, I guess, to the bus, Cro asked him about his 42-point performance and and Zach said, quote, “I can do that any night if they give me the damn ball enough.” End quote. That’s what Zack Lavine said. Again, there are no videos, no audio, nothing of these comments. No way to prove that he actually said them other than Ciro claims he said them. And Ciro was or at least the Ciro Twitter account was there in Miami covering the Kings and Heat game because he has videos of talking to some of these other Kings players. So, we don’t have the context of how Zack Lavine said it. Was there a smile? Was it snarky? Was it straightfaced? What? Whatever. But that comment rubbed Kings fans the the wrong way. It seemed like now Zack Lavine had a chance to refute or deny that he said that as Chris Beerman from the Sacramento Be is on the road and after the the Kings loss against the Indiana Pacers last night. Chris Beerman asked Zack Lavine about it and Zach said quote, “I’m a confident guy, so I’m going to go out there and talk a little mess sometimes.” So, Zach clearly is not saying that he never said those those words. And a lot of people or some I shouldn’t say a lot of people, some people have asked me, Matt, why haven’t you you talked about this? I haven’t talked about these comments on social media. I haven’t talked about him here on the podcast for for a number of number of reasons, but the primary reason is to be completely honest with you guys. I don’t have a problem with it. I don’t it doesn’t really bother me. Like I don’t I don’t really care. I I don’t take that comment. While it might come off as as a like a lack of accountability, I didn’t take it in that way. I know a lot of people are very frustrated, hyper frustrated with Zack Lavine right now because of the the the p uh the it’s perceived that he doesn’t exactly want to be here in Sacramento or is very nonchalant on the floor. Doesn’t seem too motivated to write this ship or figure this out here in Sacramento. He seems just more than happy to collect his ridiculously big paycheck, go out there and sometimes look to score and other times not and just very nonchalant, too cool for school, whatever kind of attitude that he wants to have about this Kings team in this Kings season and how it’s going. He seems to not be nearly as frustrated or bothered by what’s happening as Kings fans are. and he doesn’t seem to be working that hard or as hard as some would expect him to or that he should to try and fix this or get the Kings out of this in any kind of way. Plus, there’s the added venom of he was the guy that the Kings traded Dear and Fox for, which that’s not Zack Lavine’s fault. There’s the added venom of the amount of money that he’s being paid. That’s also not Zack Lavine’s fault. The Chicago Bulls are the ones that that gave it to him, and they clearly regretted that decision, too. Uh the Kings didn’t because they went out and traded for it for some reason. Um but look, I I didn’t take that those comments as him not being accountable and him just going like, “It’s everybody else’s fault. It’s not my fault. I can do this whenever I want. It’s everybody else’s fault.” I understand if you took him that way. Look, maybe those comments given the circumstances right now and everything that’s going on and I’m I’m I know Zack Lavine is aware of how people are talking about him and the reputation around him and the general vibe around this Sacramento Kings team right now, which he is very much a part of. It’s not great and I know he’s aware of that. So maybe these comments wasn’t the best time to say them after you had granted a 42-point performance. But at the same time, like if you’re going to say something like that after dropping 42 and going crazy, it’s a good time as the good as time of any to say it. On top of that, like he’s pissed off. Not just because of the things that are being said that I know he’s aware of, but the night before he scored two points, only played 19 minutes. Granted, some of that is his fault because he’s disappeared far too often at times and and for some reason he’ll have nights where he definitely is looking to score and other nights where he just isn’t and we he’s not completely blameless for that. Look, I get why my point is I get why these comments may have run people rubbed people the wrong way. They didn’t bother me because also ultimately with this team, if I’m being honest with you, whether it’s guys that I like, guys that I don’t like, guys that I see as part of the future like Keegan Murray, Maxim Reno, Nick Clifford, or guys that I think are are going to be gone by February, like Demard Rosen and maybe even Malik Monk. I don’t really care what anybody has to say right now. The only thing that matters to me is what they do or don’t do on the floor because they’ve talked they’ve been talking since training camp saying these things defending 94 feet being the most uh well conditioned team in the league or we’re we’re pissed off by the narratives about us blah blah blah. We’ve heard all this stuff for months and it hasn’t mattered because on the floor they’ve more often than not folded or completely fallen apart like a wet napkin. like this team is not good and they don’t look cohesive at all. They look every bit of the of what we thought that they would be, the aisle of misfit toys, except it’s even worse than many of us thought that it would be. So, I don’t really care what Zack Lavine has to say after one good game to some random reporter on a way to a bus or what Doug Christie has to say at the podium after a loss. Like, at this point, the talk talk is cheap. Talk doesn’t matter. It’s what happens on the floor that matters to me. It’s it’s who gets the playing time, what they do with that playing time, the rotations. That is what matters to me. On that particular night, Zack Lavine was engaged. He was active. He was hitting shots. He was every bit of the threelevel all-star caliber scorer that we know he’s capable of being. And the Sacramento Kings won the game because of it. So, if you want to talk a little mess afterwards, hey, be my guest. I’m all for it. Talk is cheap. At least that time he was engaged. And if you want to talk mess, feel free to talk mess, but make sure you’re engaged before and after you talk mess. And at least in that Miami Heat game, Zack Lavine did or was engaged. So, right now, as I’m recording this podcast, the Stockton Kings are currently hosting the South Bay Lakers in the NBA GLeague. Why is this important? Because one, Devin Carter is playing for the Stockton Kings tonight. He was sent down to the Stockton Kings a couple of days ago. And two, Nick Clifford is playing for Stockton tonight. Nick was sent down earlier today. It’s nothing to be read far into other than Nick is just getting an opportunity to get kind of extended playing time and hopefully dominate at the uh the G-League level like an NBA player is supposed to. And well, right now the uh Stockton Kings are up 191 with about four minutes remaining in this game. So, there’s still time to improve these numbers uh a little bit. Um, but at the time of this recording, Nick Clifford has 12 points, is four of 11 from the field. So, not the best shooting percentage. Uh, does have seven rebounds, a steal, a block shot, has turned the ball over five times. Um, not the greatest of stat lines for what you’re hoping from, but at least he’s he’s getting some burn. He’s getting some run. Devin Carter, though, Devin Carter has 23 points to lead the Stockton Kings in scoring. In fact, that leads all scorers in this game at this point. He’s seven of 17 from the field, two of seven from three-point range. Also has seven rebounds, an assist, a steal, only one turnover. So Devin Carter’s playing well. Dylan Cardwell has 10 points, 15 rebounds, and a couple of blocks. So, of course, by the time you’re listening to this recording, this game will be final, and we’ll see uh what the final score ends up being and and who wins and what the final numbers are. But uh keep an eye on that. check that out cuz Nate Clifford got the opportunity to uh to play in the G-League tonight. Again, didn’t dominate or anything like that, but uh something to keep an eye on as we expect NE to be back with the main squad and playing for the uh the Kings on Thursday uh when they host the Denver Nuggets again inside of the Golden One Center. Before we wrap up, we did it last time. It wasn’t a great result last night, so let’s let’s do it again. And it is time for another one of our tankathon uh lottery sims. It’s the same exact odds for the Kings tonight as it was last night. The Kings, Clippers, and Pacers all with a 6 and8 record. Have 47.7% chance. Well, the Kings have a 47.5% chance to end up in the top four. A 12.3% chance to finish with the number one overall pick. Remember, the LA Clippers pick goes to the Oklahoma City Thunder and the New Orleans Pelicans who are currently the worst team in the league with a 3- win 22 loss record. They don’t have their draft pick that’s going to Atlanta. So, some some talk about drama, some big drama in that sense. But let’s see if the lottery tonight goes better than it did last night because last night the lottery ended up with the Sacramento Kings at seven, I believe. Didn’t Charlotte win the the draft lottery? I don’t remember, but last night was last night. Tonight is tonight. Let’s see if it’s better for the Kings. And well, it is better for the Kings. Instead of the seventh pick, they have the sixth pick. The Washington Wizards win the draft lottery. The Brooklyn Nets get the second pick. And oh lord, if this happens, the NBA is going to just completely combust and burn down. The Oklahoma City Thunder get the third overall pick. Pacers at four, Pelicans at five, which goes to Atlanta, and then the Kings at six. The 67 range. Oh god, don’t. No, I’m not doing it. The six and seven range is a very high likelihood for the Sacramento Kings based off of how I expect this season to play out and how I expect the season to go. Of course, you can get good talent at the six or seven pick range, but we need to see the Sacramento Kings move up. So, so far in all three of these Tankathon uh draft lottery sims that we’ve done, uh it hasn’t gone great. We we’re 0 for three on the Kings, not just moving up and winning the lottery. We’re 0 for three of the Kings ending up even in the top four. So, we got to Hey, get all the bad ones out of the way now so when we actually get to the draft lottery itself in in April, things will go well for the Sacramento Kings, right? That’s how it works. Hopefully, we can get all the bad luck out of the way. I want to hear your thoughts. your thoughts on these two little bits of drama that we talked about, especially if you want to share your thoughts on Sam Amik’s comments today and just your your belief level or overall skepticism with is VC RAD fully in control. Look, I don’t blame you at all if you feel that way. I’m not going to try and convince you otherwise. All I can do is someone who is plugged in, who has a relationship with Scott Perry, who has a relationship with King’s ownership, who’s there in the building and has friends in the building. I I I can tell you what I’ve been told. That’s that’s what I’m all I’m trying to do. I’m not trying to convince you of anything. I too need to be convinced of some things as well. So, believe it if you want. Don’t wait to believe it when you see it. Whatever your approach is, I do not blame you. But I’d love to hear how you’re feeling about it. I'll get to the Kings news in a moment. I'm gonna zoom in to see what D&D 5e 2014 books he's rocking back there.
The way things happened last year were disastrous. Clifford, Mad Max, and Keegan Murray are among my favorites on this team. Mostly Keegan Murray, he’s my number 1 player on this dysfunctional roster. Love the kid
"Save the drama for your mama." – Booker T
They need a massive overhaul and a coach who's proven. Only way we ever see the light of day again!
Hopefully, Santa will bring you a new chair for Christmas.
ya really think he seeked him?
get a coach and we can talk
& get Mr Carter a haircut and some minutes
I'm over it, until there's real changes I'm only watching locked on kings and not watching games.
