Alonso to Orioles, per Passan

  1. At least we didn’t have to wait till the end of next season to know that there’s no hope of making the playoffs.

  2. Losing Pete sucks but I do think this core ran its course. They were getting older and they were a poor defensive core. I don’t know what the game plan is but I’m okay with resetting. Pete was a good personality but sometimes you have to move on

  3. This is not a serious organization. Time to stop pretending. Santa left you coal and charged you $50 to park near it.

  4. Nimmo, Diaz and now homegrown Alonso…. It’s like they are trying to get rid of every popular player . They better get Bellinger for first and Tucker now …. And put a good effort into Skubal or else the teams done … this has been a terrible off season

  5. This is a terrible contract and Mets fans should be happy they didn’t match the deal. Per Baseball Reference, the most similar hitters to Alonso through age 29 are below. I’ve included their 5 year cumulative bWARs (ages 31-35 since this past year was Alonso’s age 30 season).

    Mark McGwire 29.7

Matt Olson 6.0 through one year

    Chris Davis -5.8 (that’s negative 5.8)

    Cecil Fielder 1.4

    Richie Sexson 1.5

    Glenn Davis 0.2

    Tony Clark 1.8

    Ryan Howard -2.5 (that’s negative 2.5)

    Tino Martinez – 7.1

    Nate Colbert – 0

  6. I was telling myself I was okay with Diaz leaving because in my mind, that meant Pete was a lock to be signed. I’m kind of at a loss for anything other than disappointment. I can’t bank on hoping they have something up their sleeve, because I’ve already been proven wrong. This just sucks.

  7. Losing Edwin stung more-I love Pete, but kinda felt this might happen. Then again, I genuinely have no idea what Stearns is doing and he might actually still think he’s in Milwaukee

Also now my ironically created username from years ago checks out

  8. Even if this and all of the other players we’ve lost somehow results in a winning team, could we even realistically call them the Mets?

Like, this feels like a Theseus’ ship situation. You get rid of beloved players like Alonso and Nimmo, then let Diaz walk and you lose a chunk of what makes the Mets the Mets, you know? Especially when these players did come in clutch or perform well last year.

Idk. It’s a bummer that has me deflated after an already deflating week/month/year. The trades are kinda giving 1987 Mets energy

  9. David sterns is a complete fraud. Devin williams is horrible. Edwin diaz is the most dominant closer in baseball. Alonso has proven he can hit in a mets uniform where countless other big name free agents have crumbled. You let him go and not even make an offer. The problem is sterns. Cohen needs to fire sterns immediately.

  10. Damn…expected, but still hurts. Stearns doesn’t value lumbering first basemen, so he’s just doing what he’s always done. I’d love to know what the plan is, though, as it looks very rag tag right now. The small ball stuff worked in Milwaukee and hey, that’s great, but this isn’t that market and Uncle Steve has money…I get that they’re saying they lost a ton of money last year, which is questionable heading towards another possible work stoppage, but Stearns needs to stop shopping at the Goodwill for everything. Soto was Cohen, Stearns has been bargain man. It’s smart to pick up guys on the cheap and see if they can have value, but not going after bigger talent because you don’t want to overspend on the much needed ace arm you desperately have to have or to keep your homegrown slugger who got the money he was looking for…it’s not a great look. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt for now, but that window is closing.

  11. This feels extremely reactionary. Yes, the team collapsed but it certainly wasn’t because of the offense and Diaz. The starting pitching was straight trash. I don’t know what the rest of the off season looks like but I don’t see how anyone can paint these moves as good.

Legit feels like the team is being run by an unhinged WFAN caller right now

  12. Cohen and Stearns better make some big moves now. I’m expecting both Bellinger and Tucker. Make it fucking happen. Otherwise what was the point of signing Soto.

  13. Unfortunately, this seems to be the case…

Cohen does not care about the Mets, the fans, or about winning a World Series. He hired the latest Moneyball Boy Genius and shelled out for the biggest free agent in the market a single time so we always have the appearance of competing, but the Mets and Mets fans are merely chips he’s already planning to cash in.

  14. Im sorry but Cohen is worse than the Wilpons. We couldnt even make the guy an offer that we could have beaten? Why did we even sign Soto?

Stearns and Cohen will get zero dollars from me this season. Unbelievable

  15. I share the sentimentality, but the doomering is silly. You can’t judge an off-season before the winter meetings have even started. There are huge names available. Alonso was good but not elite or irreplaceable. Best of luck in Baltimore, now let’s get Bellinger/Tucker and an ace and we’ll be fine.

  16. The writing was on the wall. Sterns has never came out advocating for Pete. When you want to keep a player you would come out and say WE WANT PETE BACK. But that was never the case. We need production from 1st, center, and left. We need outfielders that can hit and defend.

I want Soto to start taking Reps at first or really start working on his route to the ball. It’s crazy for a batter with the best eye in baseball and can’t pick up the ball in the air.

On the off chance we get Tucker and Bellinger, bring up Benge. That would make me at least feel like we have a solid core of young, talented outfielders for the next 3-5 yrs.

    My line up would be

    1. Lindor, SS

    2. Tucker, Center

    3. Soto, RF/ 1st ( if he shows he can learn the position )

    4. Bellinger, RF /1st

    5.Semien, 2nd

    6. Baty, 3rd

    7. Alverez, C

    8. Benge, LF

    9. Vientos/ McNeil DH.

  17. A lot of upset people but come on guys Edwin diaz just got the richest reliever contract in history and Pete Alonso just got the richest 1st baseman contract in history. Neither are worth it at their ages

  18. Stearns never wanted Alonso. He also as you can probably tell want his own players and that’s why Nimmo, Diaz and Alonso are all gone and Devin Williams his former player from the Brewers is here. I don’t mind prospects getting a chance but the roster shouldn’t be filled with them. Ps Mets never made an offer to Alonso so that said a lot right there

  19. Billy Eppler was the GM that re-signed Nimmo. It’s very very clear now Stearns is not giving guys 31+ big deals.

I’m pissed at losing Alonso but please stop the doom and gloom. It’s still December and there’s still moves to be made.

  20. The Mets organization is a national embarrassment and a complete embarrassment to NY. As a fan for 30+ years I am done with this clusterfuck clown franchise. Giving up the Jets and Mets in the same year is a GREAT feeling.

  21. good for Pete on securing a big bag. the Mets were never going to give him 5 years- they’re building a new core.

  22. Last offseason I said I’d give Pete up to 6/162 and somebody scoffed. Well here we are.

  23. If true, it hurts. Pete Alonzo was equal parts bat and lore. It’s sad to say goodbye to someone who brought beautiful magic to crucial moments as he did.

  24. I saw this coming. He’s going to crush 50 easy in Baltimore. Perfect stadium for him.

  25. Saw that coming… not a surprise.

Our team is looking real odd right now.

5 year 155m is not it for Pete though. No way.

  26. Goddammit the man should have retired a Met and set all the records. Literally what tf is Stearns’ plan? Save money he doesn’t need to save?

Next year is going to suck

  27. Is Stearns so determined to shape the Mets entitely in his own vision that he is just tearing it all down?

  28. If anything we needed to lock down Pete, a homegrown star and fan favorite. I honestly don’t know what Stearns is doing. This team has so many holes to fill now it’s insane.
