NEW ADDITION: Cleveland Guardians SELECT RHP Peyton Pallete in Rule 5 Draft #mlb

The winter meetings are over. The rule five draft has concluded. The Guardians have a new member of their roster for the rule five draft. Payton Powell is a member of the Cleveland Guardians. A former second round pick of the Chicago White Socks in 2021 out of the University of Arkansas. Powette uh was really well thought of his draft year. Was going to be one of the top college arms in the draft. Wound up needing Tommy John surgery. Has had a bit of a challenge in his comebacks with the White Socks. um he’s more of a pen arm now. He was drafted as a starter, but I think most everybody in the draft that year would was not surprised that he would move to the pen at some point, but this is a good addition for the Guardians. He was one of our top picks. Uh in terms of targets for the Guardians in the rule five draft, he’s got a four pitch mix. Uh a fast ball that can give a 98. The shape of the fast ball is a little bit less than ideal. There’s some questions about its effectiveness. The velocity is good. They need to figure out uh how he’s holding it, which direction it’s going in, spin, all that kind of stuff, which you know, the Guardians might be able to do with him. He’s got a big great curve ball that doesn’t really pair well with his fast ball right now. So, that’s something the Guardians might try to work together on. Couple other pitches. He missed a ton of bats in TripleA. Uh avoided getting hit too hard. I’m surprised the White Socks didn’t have him protected to begin with given that the money and the the pick they invested in him. Um, and they also went out and added some guys to their roster from the rule five draft, too. So, but the White Socks are generally a good organization to pick off talent from because they underdevelop uh guys like this all the time. So, this could be an interesting pick for the Guardians. The Guardians did add Jack Carrey, a 2021 11throunder by the Pirates uh in the minor league phase. The Guardians didn’t lose anyone, which is always interesting, too, because when you lose guys in the rule five draft, sometimes that’s a sign of org health. Uh could be a sign that you protected the right guys. You always wonder when someone picks your guy uh what they’re looking at. But the Guardians didn’t lose anybody. So, we’ll talk about the intricacies of that and what that means for the Guardians organizational health. But, we’re excited about Payton Powell. I think this is a great addition to the roster. A guy who can come to spring training and compete for a bullpen job. uh also out of the University of Arkansas where Trevor Stefen went and that worked out pretty well for a couple years for the Guardians. He’s recovering now and trying to figure out how to get back there. But Powell is the next one and I think this is a great uh guy for the Guardians to work with.
