Gary Cohen on the stunning Mets departure of Pete Alonso

Let’s welcome Gary Cohen who
Proclaim back in August that quote, the polar bear was on his
own private Iceberg when he set the new franchise home run,
run record and gerd. That that iceberg is now floating towards
Baltimore. So what a follow-up on what Keith had to say there
touch and go with Peak last offseason. Did you expect it was going to
come to this conclusion today. Well, it it’s not often that
polar bears are blue crabs play in the same Waters, but
apparently, that’s going to be the situation in Baltimore.
Look, I totally agree with Keith. I just can’t be a shock to anybody
who saw how the Mets. Handled Pete’s free agency last
year. They had no intention of giving him a five-year deal
going into his age 30 season and they certainly weren’t going
to give him one going into his age 31 season.
This actually reminds me very much of
the way the Mets parted with Jacob degrom that they Would
have been interested in bringing Jake back on a shorter
deal, as they would have been with Alonzo. But once it appeared, the teams were
going to go for five years with Pete, it just was not in their
game plan and you can fault them for that and say that
they’ve they’ve read Pete’s value wrong. But that clearly
was their intention, all along to not go deep into alonso’s 30s where the contract now, obviously, what if you’re a
Mets fan, this is a really hard day. It’s always hard saying goodbye to the players that
you’ve been rooting for. And when you strip away, Nimmo and Diaz and Alonzo in a
short period of time, that that’s a gut punch. And now we
have to see how David Stern’s decides to rebuild this team but again, I just don’t I don’t, I can’t be shocked that
the Mets would not go to the terms that the Orioles
did with Alonzo that that was never
going to be in the cards. I get that but it’s Joel.
Sherman said today, he said the Mets never even made a bid
for Alonzo. Are you surprised at that GE? Well again once they saw that
the market was going to teams offering him four and five
years. I just I don’t think that was on
their radar. It was clear last winter that the Mets did
not value Alonzo to that extent and certainly did not feel as
though a player like him would age well
into his It’s now, they could be totally
wrong about that. Pete could end up having age 34 and 35
seasons of the caliber that they’ve had,
he’s had. And in that case, the Mets end up looking
bad, we’ll see, you know, that’s, that’s a
matter of, how David Stern’s values players given their age
and their their characteristics and, you know, he’s going to be
proven, right? Or he’s going to be proven wrong, but I know it’s
really hard for Met fans. And to accept that the core of
this team has been broken up. Honestly, the, the Shocker to me
was Diaz. I could not believe that the Mets would let
Diaz walk away, they had put themselves in the position to
have a superb back. End of the bullpen with Williams and Diaz. And the
fact that they allowed Edwin to walk away without
overwhelming him really, really surprised me. Yeah, you mentioned that This is
a gut punch for most Mets fans who had just been dying for
somebody from start to finish to start an end their
career with the Mets. What is Pete
alonso’s Legacy you think with the meds, he’s the greatest home, run
hitter in Mets history, not just in terms of the number of
home runs he hit but in terms of the threat that he posed, the
only person close to that was Darryl Strawberry Dave.
Kingman to a lesser extent but he was a different kind of
player but you know, Pete was, he was a
joy, you know, he had a great love. Love for the Mets
and he had a great love for the game and he played every day
and he was awkward in the field, but he was a threat.
Every time he went to the plate and it is the greatest of irony’s that the home run,
the biggest one that he hit his, a met was off a player who
now will be an important piece to the bets, going forward and
Devin Williams. Yes, indeed. What about Replacements have you
had a chance to think about it there and how they should
replace Pete, Alonso? Well, to me it,
It’s obvious that the Mets have to make it a big offensive
Splash much bigger than you would have expected going into
the offseason. You know they traded in MO
because that short up the defense a
little bit and took them away
of, from two years of financial
obligation that they would have had five
years for demo 34 semi and so that made some degree of sense.
But you know, the Mets have a lot of good position players
coming up through the farm system. And part of this is to
provide a ramp for Arson been jet
Williams and AJ Ewing. But those guys are not all going to
be playing on opening day in 2026. I really think that the
Mets have got to be in the market for Kyle Tucker
and I would not understand what they wouldn’t
be. He’s ironically for the same
high school as Pete Alonso, and he’s two years younger and a tremendous all-around hitter.
He’s not a 40 home run hitter, but he’s a 25 to 30 home. Run
hitter and a much better average
hitter. Yes. He’s And in the Mets, need some right-handed
bats and they’ve going to have to figure that part out. You know, I’ve heard the idea of
signing Paul Goldschmidt and platooning and with Jeff McNeil
at first base that could be part of the solution. I don’t
know. But I think the Tucker has to be right at the top of their list
and it would be hard to understand with all the dollars,
the Mets now have available if that wasn’t the
case, all right? Can we thank you for your thoughts, happy
holidays to you and Lynn and the family. Good to see you. Thanks Gary, thanks Keith. All right, just get It going here Mets. Hot stove
when we come back.

On Mets Hot Stove, Mets legendary play-by-play man Gary Cohen joins Gary Apple and Keith Raad to discuss Pete Alonso’s tenure in New York ending as well as his thoughts on Edwin Diaz and how Kyle Tucker should now be the Mets main target this offseason.

  1. Really Cohen! They didn't want to give a 5 year contract to Alonzo because of his age. But they are able to give a 15 year contract to Soto. He will be 42 years old until that contract expires🤦

  2. Stearn is clearly restructuring the Mets without coming out and saying it.
Once he is satisfied with the end result he will start spending again.
Cohen has said he has the upmost confidence in Stearn and he was only getting involved in the Soto deal.

  3. David "Boy Genius" Stearns is the worst Mets executive since M. Donald Grant. It's the Midweek Massacre. Cohen should fire Stearns immediately! Mets fans should Boycott Opening Day!
1:19 It's been a hard 40 years Gary…as Don Lagreca said it years ago, "Who is your forever player? Ed Kranepool! Ed Kranepool!"

  4. I am leaving the Mets….way too much emphasis on analytics reduces actual humanity and potential –of all players–Stearn's too simplistic vision and decision making….

  5. Tucker hits for average? He hit six points lower than Alonso last year. What the Mets did by not offering Alonso a five-year deal is disgusting. Tons of power hitting right-handed hitters who continued to hit through their mid-to-late thirties. Stearns is in some alternative universe.

  6. Steve Cohen got his casino, he will make double from that then the Mets, that's all it matters to him, just like Jerry Jones is more invested in his oil fortune now then the Cowboys

  7. if the mets win the ws then this wouldn't mean anything at the and of the day you want the best team out there possible. nothing against diaz, alonso, nimmo those guys were great contributors ultimately you want a reset and try something new.

  8. Unlike the Dodgers, the Mets don't seem to have any blueprint for long-term success despite having the richest owner in baseball. Really makes you scratch your head.

  9. I really don’t care about Alonso or nimmo, the team needed a change in chemistry. I don’t like Stearns overall he seems like he’s Mr. El Cheapo, someone has to remind Stearns this is not the Brewers and this is not his money that he’s spending

  10. Stearns resign, if you want at 67 I will kick your ass in the boxing ring your bad these were good players you got rid of all they needed was a good consistent designated hitter now your not going to get any of these free agents Lieing Stearns blew the season last year he should have got Bednar, Duran and Crocette last off season , the Yankees ,Phillies and Redsox all made the playoffs but the Mets didn't. Stearns is a no good lier and he should be fired now, he has took a sledge hammer to this team, unless he is fired now nobody should show up for the games anymore for Cohen not getting involved when he should have, they took a Sledge hammer to this team then let us finish the job nobody show up, Stearns is a devil and destroyed this team if he would have ɓeen fired all this would have never happened, so Stearns if you want meet me in the boxing ring I will kick your ass at 67.
