🔴LIVE 🔴San Francisco 49ers VS Tennessee Titans/ NFL Envivo /Madden NFL 26
EA Sports coverage of the National Football League brings us to Silicon Valley. And with a fog horn sounding behind us, that can only mean one thing, and that is it’s time for football at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara. Straight ahead, we’ve got a pretty good one on tap here as it’ll be the Tennessee Titans taking on the San Francisco 49ers. And now, faithful, please welcome your 2025 San Francisco 49ers. ers. Joey slide the kicker stands ready and we are underway from Santa Clara and he’ll be tackled just shy of the 25. So here’s the first drive now for the 49ers. And leading them out their signal caller now in his fourth season in the NFL. This guy’s leadership is so important to how this offense functions. He doesn’t shrink from any moments on game day and everything he does he does with confidence. He sets the example in practice, off the field, and as the guy leading everyone out for each possession. will wind up losing yardage here back at the 21 yd line. It’ll go as a loss of three right away and it’s second down. We knew both of these safeties were good in run support, but how about the play we just saw there? How about that closing speed able to get to the outside part of the field and turn that play into a loss. Here’s Pertie. He’ll get this out wide here to McAffrey and up to the 35 before they’re able to knock him down. First down San Francisco to pick up 14 yds. One of my old teammates called me the other day when he was watching the game. He’s like, “Man, try to watch an NFL game and try to account for their passing game. That’s difficult.” And just when you think you got everything covered, here comes a back out of the back field. In this case, he picks up a first down. On first down, this is McCaffrey. And good running there as he’ll take this all the way up to midfield. 15 more there. And they’re on a roll. It’s another first down. First and 10. Well, there’s plenty of real estate for him to maneuver on that run. And let’s face it, it shouldn’t be a surprise. He’s one of the better backs in the league. had to come into this game with the idea, slow him down, otherwise it’s going to be a long afternoon. The first catch of the game for George KD and they’ll wind up getting this one all the way down inside the 20. That’ll go as a pick up a 32 on the catch and run. 18 yd line. Five receivers in the formation. That means immediate pressure on the secondary. And often times you take a step or two back just to be able to cover the deep ball. In this case, four of the five headed straight downfield on vertical routes and then they snuck one of the outside receivers across the formation. Able to re it in and get good yardage after the catch as well. Give him 10 that time. escaping the danger, running with it and picking up a first down. And the 49er first down. First and goal at the 8 yd line. That’s an early scramble that can be viewed positively by either side. From the offensive point of view, it begins to establish him as a possibility to keep it on certain plays. And defensively, they avoided giving up a huge play and one of their first tests in containing a quarterback on the run. and he’ll be stopped just outside the five at the six. Give him two yards on that one. Second and goal now. The yards may start getting a little tougher to come by down here near the goal line. That’s good work defensively. They’re on first down holding him to a short gain. The sixyd line, the line of scrimmage on second and goal out right to Bourne and he was able to shed one tackle but could not get away from there. That time the completion goes for four yards and we’re set up with a third and goal. Driven it down the field nicely here on the opening drive, but now it’s put up or shut up. No doubt about it because to make that type of a drive and ultimately kick a field goal would feel very disappointing. But I’m just wondering is the head coach thinking is this four down territory? And it’s complete in the end zone. Touchdown 49ers. 49ers. Jawan Jennings from a yard out and the Ners are on the board first here this afternoon and the QB rating right now skyhigh. Four for four on that opening drive and it ends with a touchdown pass. Yeah, I don’t know quite how to figure it out. I think I need my friends from MIT to come in and help me. I think 158.3 is the number one, right? That’s the highest you can get. That’s where he is. He’d like to continue on that pace. Eddie Pierro now for the extra point and the 49ers grab a seven to nothing lead. So that drive goes eight plays and it’s polished off by a touchdown for San Francisco. Now after the touchdown, here’s Pinero to kick it off. And they’ll start this drive just across the 30. Pretty nice work on the return. So, the Titans set to go to work for the first time. Leading him out is their rookie quarterback, the young man out of Miami. I tell you what, when he is on schedule for that week, secondaries take notice because you’ve got to stay alert back there on every snap. A truly powerful arm, one that’s capable of challenging any level of the defense on any given play. That’s why so many scouts preach arm talent when preparing for the NFL draft. a quarterback with arm strength to make every throw in the book. He’s an asset to have in any offense. And he is met at the line of scrimmage. And he goes down right there. No gain on the play. It’ll be second down. As usual, the hallmark of a good run defense. Linebackers making plays near the line of scrimmage. Absolutely nowhere to run there. Officially nothing on that last run. They’ll try again. Second and 10 on the RPO. He’ll keep it himself. Turns out to be a great idea to tuck that one good for 24 yds. A gain of 24 yds and a Titans first down. First and 10 at the 45 yd line. As we both know, there was a lot that went into why they made him their first round pick this year. Part of it was what they saw in college, his playmaking ability when things break down. As soon as he saw he wasn’t getting a lane to throw, he pivoted and found an alternate way to the marker off the play fake. Ward on this one incomplete. The pressure got to him as he released it and it’s second down. I tell you what, that’s a veteran play from a guy in his first season in the NFL. A lot of rookies are trying to force something there. He thought better of it and that was the right decision. So after the incompletion on first, now second and 10. They run straight ahead here with Pard. Five yds. Now it’s third and five. A quick burst there and he nicely bit off a pretty decent game. Five yds on the pickup and this is third down. 49ers have an extra defensive back on the field. A nickel set for third down. Now Ward, he’s got the open man. It’s Manor. And this will move the chains again as the tackle’s going to be made at the 49ers 27 yd line. Plenty things to talk about here, partner. But to me, their defense gave up a touchdown on the first drive. How about how they’re responding coming back. That’s a big third down pickup to keep their drive alive. They’ll go with Pard here on first down. And he is going to be stopped cold behind the line of scrimmage. Two yds the loss. Second and 12. That’s a play to take note of there for the defense. I think in the future if you’re going to try and block him, maybe you get a guard to help double team him and try and steer him out of the play. They should have done it on that snap. throwing is Ward and he’s going to be taken down back around the 35 yd line. It’ll go as a loss of about six and now it brings up third. They’ve gobbled up over 30 yards of turf so far, but a sack knocks them backwards and that interrupts the momentum they were building. Good opportunity for the defense to escape this drive before they get to the end zone. First and second down were a disaster. Both went backwards. Now it’s third and 18. They need something big. Ward. Now he’ll tuck this and run. And inside the 20 before he’s brought down. That one a broken play, but it ends up being a good play. The scramble goes for 20. Another Titans first down. It’s a gain of 20. First down Tennessee. He’s a talented runner and that means he’s always looking for bigger and bigger gains when he takes off. Certainly found some bonus yards there beyond the first down marker. And this early drive will continue with that extra jolt from his legs. They toss it down to Pard and he will score. Touchdown Titans. Tony Pard a 15 yd touchdown run. And the Titans respond to that opening drive touchdown with one of their own. And there’s an offense that didn’t panic after getting down early and with good reason. No better way to silence a home crowd than with a nice long sustained drive. And they were able to put one together here and finish with the touchdown run. Joey Sly on for the extra point. It’s up and good. So, these teams match touchdowns here in the first quarter and we’re tied 77. A good drive that time as they go nine plays in all and was polished off by the touchdown run from the 16 yd line. Each team’s had it. Each team has scored. 77 here as the kicks away. And he’s up across the 25 and down at the 28. Back out there comes the 49ers offense ready for their second drive. A long drive last time out for this offense. Charles, if you remember, they started basically in the shadows of their own end zone, marched it down the field, and a lot of that was through the passing game. And partner, a former defensive back, I’m having almost a physical reaction watching what’s happening right now, but let’s give credit where it’s due because they’ve done an excellent job moving the ball through the air. Secondary getting picked apart pass by pass. Obviously, they need to make some adjustments there on the back end. Yeah, because offensively, we know that they’re not going to be shy about throwing that football. So give him five yds there on the pitch and catch and that will bring up second down and five at the 33 yd line back to throw party and it’s knocked away and incomplete. Certainly looked like someone was very confident his ability to fit that one in. I would say he was overconfident because there wasn’t a whole lot of separation there. Had that one covered pretty well downfield and knocked it away. They come up now third and five following the incomplete pass. Perie from the gun. pass taken in by his big tight end and he is going to have a 49ers first down as they’re able to get the third down conversion and a 49er first down. First and 10 at the 47 yd line. Someone sharp in this game. I mean a touchdown pass on the first drive and comes right back and he’s flinging it around really well here. Really nice throw there to pick up the first down. You kind of just feel a laser focus and confidence about him. And I think we saw that this week, didn’t we, talking to him and the coaches, they felt good about his performance coming up. Yeah, I was really impressed with that last practice we saw when they went through two-minute drill when they went through all the different situations. Ball hardly hit the ground and I thought, yeah, he might be locked in for this one. A gain of three. Second down. That’s just a pile of bodies there. And that’s when you kind of find out who’s a tough guy, right? Who can stand up and make a play? It was only a three- yd run, but for both sides, they had to walk away from that feeling like, “Okay, I can stand up when the going gets tough in here.” Second down and right back to McCaffrey. And running room scarce here. He’s going to be stopped in his tracks at the line of scrimmage. A oneyd gain there following the three yd pickup on first down. But not much on that run, Charles. No, that’s exactly the way to execute a run blitz there. They guessed correctly that they would move the ball on the ground. Honed in on it and stopped him. Mark that down for a win in the defens’s column. Oh, he had him. He was open, but he couldn’t get it to him. It’s incomplete. I put just a little bit too much heat on that one. When you throw it to the outside, you do have to be careful because you got to keep it away from the defender, but you also have to give your own guy a chance, too. On fourth down, the Niners send out the veteran Thomas Morstead to punt. And now a low liner. I think he mis hit it. And no return possible here as they angle this one out of bounds. The Titans coming back onto the field for their second drive. And now last drive so successful with the ground game ending in a touchdown. Do you stick with that formula? That would be the number one thing you would think of. But so many guys now would look at it and say, “We’ve got them set up so well for play action. Now’s the time to take a shot.” But, you know, there was a big time coach in the state of Ohio who once said, “If you throw the ball, if you put it in the air, three things can happen and two of them are bad. He would have kissed it on the ground.” So, the drive’s going to start with Pard looking for a seam, but finding none. He’ll get back to the line of scrimmage and that’s it. He’ll lose a yard there and it’s second and 11. The running lanes have definitely not been there for him here in the first half and I don’t think it’s all been his fault. His offensive line hasn’t given him much space. A loss results there. A loss of a yard there to start out. That leads to a second and 11 throwing now. Ward that’s caught left side by Manor and he’s upended after a gain of two out to the 27. The goal of a wide receiver screen is get enough blockers in front to create a wall and let him pick his spot to run the football. How about the defense there swarming to it and not allowing that to happen. Did not let him get downfield. They’ll see about converting this third and eight to throw. Here’s Ward and that is incomplete. How about that? Red man coverage and decided to test them early, but they proved up to the task and forced the incompletion. On fourth down, the former allpro Johnny Hecker on to punt for Tennessee. Back deep for the ners. Sky Moore. Fair catch taken just inside the 40 yd line. It’s just a 30 yd punt that time. No return. And the Ners will go on offense. First and 10. Perie going to lead the 49ers to the line. First and 10 at the 39 yd line. He’ll start by handing this off to McCaffrey. And some room to maneuver and he takes this one down almost all the way to the 30. 47 yds rushing for him now on just six carries to this point. Well, they came into this game saying it was important that they set the tone and show that they can run the football. I believe that they’ve done that here in the first quarter. So, operating from Tennessee territory now. Here’s first and 10 at the 32 yd line. And he works his way free all the way down to the outskirts of the red zone. The Ners have the first down on a gain of 11. Another 49er first down. First and 10 at the 20 yd line. They’ll bring the tight end in motion. Right. 77 our score after one. The 49ers with the football here to begin the second quarter as they’ve got it with a first and 10 birdie now to throw. throwing the out route. Incomplete. It’s Jennings and across the chalk into the end zone. It’s a 49er touchdown. Jawan Jennings with his second touchdown here in this first half. And the 49ers have now taken the lead. now to add the extra point and he’s got it. It’s now a 14-7 ball game. Makes the score. The drive there only spanning three plays. And the end result for the 49ers, a touchdown. Now after the touchdown, here’s Pinero to kick it off. Oh, a good looking return setup here. And he nearly broke that for more, but as it is, still a good return. They’ll start the drive right around the 37. The Titans offense now, they work their way back onto the field. They trail a one-score deficit, 14-7, as they come up first and 10. looking to put a drive together to throw is Ward and the Ners get there and bring him down. They’ll wind up losing eight on the sack there and it’s second down. It’s second down. And this is a quarterback who’s already had success on the ground in this first half, but this time they’re able to hem him in. And it’s always different when you rush a mobile quarterback as opposed to a guy you know will be right back in the pocket. In this case, you got to make sure the inside pressure and the outside pressure match and maybe even a second wave to make sure if he squirts free, you’ve got someone to tackle him. Got to imagine the pass rush will be equally intense here on second down following the sack. It’s second and 18. And that falls to the ground incomplete. A nice job of bodying him up defensively. And now it brings up third down. Third down. And this drive is almost over before it began thanks to a great defensive effort. Sack on first down followed by an incompletion. One more good rep and they get off the field. Now on third and long, they’ll look to throw and that’s going to be incomplete. The coverage too good there. The contact popped the ball free and it’s fourth down. And as his old brain remembers, when I see five wide receivers on the field as a defender, I know the ball’s coming out hot. They expected it and got there and popped it free. So on fourth down, here’s Johnny Hecker to put it away. And here’s a very low line drive. Almost whiffed on it. And a fair catch taken here right at about the 40 yd line. Officially that’ll be marked down as just a 28 yd punt and they will take over first and 10. San Francisco set to go on offense once more and they’ll just simply be looking to build off the confidence of the last time out where they scored a touchdown. Man, confidence is powerful, isn’t it? When you’ve scored once, you feel like you can go back out there and get it done again. Doesn’t matter what the defense throws at them, they feel like they’re in a groove right now and they want to get out there and show it. Yeah. Hoping to stay in that groove here this go around. And he’ll go out of bounds, it appears, right at the 45. out of bounds. Five yards on the carry. Good pick up on first down. That’s a really good gain right there. They pick up five yards halfway to a first down. The only problem now in the huddle, everyone’s going to want to touch the football. Be a lot of chattering now because they’ve seen that they can move the line of scrimmage. Another run with McCaffrey on second down. Trying to find a lane, but instead he’ll get back to the line of scrimmage. And no more. Five yds on first down, but now just a oneyd pickup there on second. The offense on third down. They’ve been okay. Two for three thus far. This will be third and five. Birdie looking to throw. Work in the middle of the field and he’s got a man complete. And he is going to have a Ner’s first down as they’re able to get the third down conversion. First down. First and 10 at the 34 yd line. Normally on third down and short yardage, you’re thinking a throw to your tight end. It’s just going to be a simple chain mover. But this time they let him roam down the field and a nice dart. Picks up the first down and then some. And now a fake on the Jet sweep, but instead they’ll give it to McAffrey and he’s going to be met at the line of scrimmage and taken down. No gain on the play. It was Sebastian Joseph who got him down defensively. Titans 34 yd line. Here’s second and 10. Birdie off the play fake. He’ll get this to Jennings over the middle and he’s going to have another first down as the tackle’s made at the Titans 23. Give him 12 yds on that one. It earns him a fresh set of downs. First and 10 at the 23 yd line. and he gets forward up the middle, but only for a couple. It’ll be second down. Just not a whole lot of room to operate there on that carry. No, not at all. They did a really nice job staying in their proper places and not allowing any lanes to open up. Second and seven from the 20. Throwing here. Perie got the connection here to Bourne. So, nothing doing there. Third and seven. Now, as a defense, you’re more balanced when you’re in zone coverage because you’re able to keep your eyes on the quarterback and see the play develop in front of you. They’re able to keep the quick pass in front of them and stop it right at the line of scrimmage. This will be the eighth play of the drive. It’s third and seven. Out of the gun, Pertie. and he is caught and they corral him just a couple yards shy of the end zone. They’re able to convert on third down and that sets up a first and goal. That’s another 49er first down. First and goal at the two yd line. So many times in my career I’ve heard coaches talk about completions are one thing, but as long as we’re there at the catch and we get guys on the ground, we can live with that. But if you’re going to give up 10, 12, 15 yards after the catch, then your defense is going to be in a lot of trouble. McCaffrey is not going anywhere. He’ll be hit and dropped for no gain at the two yd line. That’s going to go as a loss of one on first down. An awful lot of congestion in the middle third of the field. But how about our defensive tackle right there? He didn’t just hold the line. He provided some push and smacked the ball carrier down for a loss. again McCaffrey and this time he’s into the end zone for a 49er touchdown. Boy, we talk a lot about Christian McCaffrey and what he can do in the open field and it’s easy to gloss over how tough he can be to stop near the goal line and he shows you just how tough he is on that carry as he takes it into the end zone. now to add the extra point. It’s good and it is now 21 to7. A 10play drive that time. And the last play on the drive, the touchdown run from Christian McCaffrey. Now after the touchdown, here’s Pinero to kick it off. and up to about the 26 yd line just across the 25. And here comes Tennessee as they get set to take the field. And Charles, a very uninspired effort. The last time we saw them out there was a quick threeand out. Then they punted the football. Yeah. And you never want to get stopped so soundly during a series, but what would be even worse now is letting it happen again right here. They’ve got to get going. looking to put a drive together. They’ll run with Pard to begin the drive and he stopped immediately there. Credit him with a oneyd gain there to make it second and nine. I think they want to start getting back into this game. It behooves them to get better on first down. Yeah, certainly not what they were looking for there out of the opening play of this drive. Still nine yds to go on second down from the 27. He’ll wind up getting three on the keeper there, but it leads to a third down. It’s a gain of three. And this is third down. They are in need of six yardds here if they hope to move the chains. Here’s Ward. able to find the open man. That’s complete and he will have a Titans first down as they’re able to get the third down conversion. And a Titans first down. A gain of 13. Well, these guys have definitely been outplayed in the first half, but I like their countenance. I like the way that they haven’t panicked out there. The way they’re carrying themselves. They’re starting to move the ball and what you have to do, maintain your poise and start to put together some drives. They’ll bring the tight end in motion right here. Now on first down, he’ll drop to throw it. No, bottled up. Fumble. It’s out. It’s loose. And now this is scooped up by the 49ers. And they’ll take over inside the 45 at the 44 yd line. The pocket collapsed around him. I know we talk about it a lot, but a QB has to have that six sense, doesn’t he? He really does. And I know of one team at one point was training their quarterback with that time frame. And anytime he didn’t get rid of the ball within this the right amount of time, they would blow a horn or blow a whistle to show him this is what that time is. Just what you’re talking about. Training him to understand this is the mount you have. Make sure the ball’s gone. Didn’t happen in this case. They’ll start out here with a Jets sweep. It’s a six-yd gain on the ground and that’ll make it second and four. But we all know the guy carrying the ball is going to get the credit both in the stat line and probably in the newspaper. But guess what? Those guys creating holes. They couldn’t feel better about themselves right now. Offensive line, tight end, probably even the wide receivers are involved. They’re moving the ball. Well, McCaffrey running up the middle and he’s going to get it down to the 33 yd line here. 73 yds now for McCaffrey. It’s a first down. I think we all suspected that they were going back to him after he found the end zone on his last carry and they kept the positive momentum going there. Another nice run by him. First and 10. And they’ve got three tight ends out there. A jumbo package look. Again, they run again. It’s McAffrey. That’s some strong running there as he’s down just shy of the 20 on the edge of the red zone. They’ll get a dozen there and it’s a first down 49ers. Now, this is an example of breaking down a defense because on a lot of these runs, he’s getting past the point of attack. And guess what he’s doing? Forcing the secondary guys to have to make a lot of tackles. Up the God McAffrey and he maneuvers up the middle for three and it’s second down. He’s taken down at the 17 yd line. A three- yd pickup brings up second and seven. So from the 17 here’s second and seven. Pie will set up to throw it here. That’s to the right side complete to KD. So five yds here. Five on the play. And now that sets up third and two. Well, they’re unable to convert that into much, but it’s never a bad idea to try to get the ball into a tight end of his caliber’s hands and see what kind of disruption he can cause. The Ners on third down. They’ve been near perfect. Four for five to this point. This time they face a third and two. Here’s Pertie. He’s got his target. That’s complete. And the Niners are going to have a first and goal coming up as they find a way to convert there on third and one. That’s another 49er. Got to say I was a little surprised to see him Charles come out in the shotgun on third and less than a yard. Yeah, but the way the NFL is nowadays, we hardly ever see anyone really run for it on short yardage. So, they’re going to throw the football more times than not. That was a nice easy rhythm throw right there and they pick up the first down. Two minutes remaining in this first half for football. a chance to really cap off a big first half here as they come up on first and goal. They’ll try to run with McCaffrey and he’ll be stopped just outside the five at the six. It’s a gain of a yard and it’ll set up second and goal. Definitely an important sequence here for this defense. They’ve had their share of struggles in this first half. They just cannot afford to give up another touchdown here. The Titans going to use the first of their timeouts as they’ll talk things over prior to this upcoming second down play. Birdie. Yeah. Back foot throw there is incomplete. I see the surprise in your face there, partner. That is a rare incompletion from him. He’s been on point this entire game. He has percentage completion wise way up. Not that time. So they’re coming up here on the ninth play of the drive and it’s third and goal now. Party. Now he’s going to step up and across the chalk into the end zone. It’s a 49er touchdown. Brock Pury a six-yd touchdown run. And the Ner take a three touchdown lead. If you’re going to play quarterback in the NFL, you’ve got to have great vision and you’ve got to remain calm when things break down in the pocket. Both of those traits are on display there. He surveys the situation, sees the middle of the field open, so he’s just going to step up and take it himself. Very well done there. now to add the extra point. He knocks it through. It’s 28-7. That time a nineplay drive and it’s capped off by a touchdown run of six yds. Eddie Pinero set now after the touchdown. And here’s Pinero to kick it off and able to get this out to the 25. The Titans getting set and ready to go here for their next drive. Last time out they had the fumble that led to the touchdown. Not a great look on either side of the ball as the defense gave up the points too, Charles. But they’ve got to take care of the football and do better here on this possession. It’s certainly been a tough stretch partner for both of those units and they kind of put their defensive mates in a really tough spot there by dropping the ball on the ground. But an easy way to make it up to him, get out there now and get some points on this drive. They’ll start on the ground here on first down. And boy, this defense again really making things tough on him as they stop him for no gain. Ardo. No gain on that run. And while the team is down, there’s still time to come back and win the football game. If I’m the offensive coordinator though, I’ve got to think about moving at a faster pace and maybe opening things up a little bit and throwing it a little bit more from the gun. Here’s Ward. That’s to the tight end helm. Now Tennessee going to use the second of their timeouts as they’ll stop it with just over a minute to go before halftime. It’s been a very one-sided game so far. They got to change what they’re doing right now, don’t they? You can’t wait till the halftime speech to make an adjustment. No, you can’t. Because if you’re doing it right, you’re adjusting from series to series. And they need a big adjustment here to try and put some points on the board. Now Ward, that’s complete to DK. And just three yardds on the catch there. He couldn’t get away. And that’s going to bring up second down. Brings up second and seven at the 38 yd line. Throwing is Ward and that’ll be off the mark. too far out in front and it’s incomplete. A misconnection there. He’s hit on just 50% of his passes thus far. That’s not where you want to be. Now you see the evolution of the game. You go back to the quarterbacks of old. 50% would be terrific cuz they threw the ball downfield almost every time they threw it. Now with the short passing game, you should be above 60% just to be in the average range. He’s got the open man. It’s Manor. Now the Titans will use their third and final timeout as they’ll stop it with 25 seconds to go here in half number one. And I don’t think there’s any question that this offense is going to need to hit on a few more plays like this. It’s been a difficult first half for them to say the least. And I do believe if they want to get back in this game, they need to start right now. It’s kind of like making adjustments. If you try and wait until the half, it’s probably too late. They need to get going right here. Ward to throw once more. Now that’s to the left sideline and incomplete. Well, they’ve been back on their heels a little bit here on this drive, but a chance to exhale just a little bit there with incompletion on first down. Now they have to gear up, try and get two more stops and escape this drive. So now second and 10 after the incompletion on first down. Ward and down he goes. The 49ers get there. A loss of eight yd. They push him back eight yds that time on second down. Third and long. So halftime here out west. Let’s go east. That’s where we find Scott Hansen with our EA Sports halftime report. All right, Brandon, thanks much. Welcome in everyone to the Orlando studios. Scott Hansen with you for a quick recap of the first half, which has been strongly one-sided. This is heading towards blowout territory unless they can come from behind and get themselves a victory. Let’s find out what happens in the second half. Let’s go back out to the commentary team, Brandon Goden and Charles Davis. Scott, thank you very much. We are ready to get started here with the second half. The Titans going to get the ball to start the second half and they trail here as we get back to it on EA Sports and he’ll take it up past the 25 to the 26 yd line. Titans. Out come the Titans now. They’ll have it first on offense to start the third. And you have to think, Charles, down three scores already. They need to play an almost perfect second half to have a solid chance. And that absolutely starts with finding some way to put together a touchdown drive here. They need to be smart, fast, efficient, get the ball into the end zone, and do it again multiple times in order to have a chance to win this game. Looking to put a drive together. Second half begins with a run by Pard. It’s a six-yd pickup and it gets him to second and four. Running lanes were at a premium in the first half, but he’s able to find some room there and he’s hoping that that’s a precursor of a big second half from the 32 yd line. Now here’s second and four. Off play action, Ward and he can’t escape and down he goes. Multiple players getting home there for an 8 yd loss. So, one quick easy analysis about why they’ve struggled so far. They keep putting themselves in third and long situations. They just took another sack right there. And the offensive film session tomorrow may be a little longer than it normally is. Not a lot of positive grades will be handed out thus far. This offense in desperate need of a conversion as they come up on third down throwing now. Ward that’s into the hands of I Manor and he will have a Titans first down as they’re able to get the third down conversion and that’s the kind of play this offense needs to maybe kick them into gear a little bit. They’ve been stuck in neutral much of the game. Perhaps that can give him a little bit of confidence that big plays are out there. Line of scrimmage, the 37 on first and 10 to throw. Here’s Ward and his throw is going to be incomplete. Ah, with a rookie quarterback out there, you’re definitely going to find out how he handles adversity because this one so far hasn’t gone according to plan. He’s got to fight through it and show him what he’s made of. Second and 10. Ward now working out of the gun. And this one is going to be off the mark. Too far out in front. I know coaches tell us all the time to having a powerful arm isn’t the number one thing they look for in a quarterback. But when you’re trying to throw inside routes and you need to put some heat on it, it helps to have the big gun. In this case, just a little bit too much. Now they face a third and 10 after backto back incompletions. Again, it’s Ward. Oh, going for Jefferson downfield. This is caught inside the 15 and he gets it down deep into San Francisco territory. They’re able to convert on third down and that sets up a first and goal. Well, partner, I’m not sure how this drive’s going to end, but how about the way they flip field position there. A nice attacking play. They picked up a heck of a chunk of yardage. They’ll run with Pard and he is met in his tracks behind the line of scrimmage. That’s going to go as a loss of two and it’ll be second down. You got to figure the further they fall behind, the more you think that they’ll get away from the run. They’re trying to stick with it, but the results they just aren’t there. It’s second and goal. Back to the 8 yd line now to throw Ward and he drops it. Incomplete and their struggles continue here. So, another incompletion there. He’s hitting on fewer than half his pass attempts in this one and that is not a winning formula. Yes. So, let’s make sure we give a little bit of credit to the defense here. They’ve given him a lot to think about, a lot of different looks and he seems a little bit confused trying to complete passes. Ward third and goal and it’s caught in the end zone. Touchdown Tennessee Chigga from eight yds out and the Titans are able to cut into this lead as they score on the opening drive of the second half. That’s a score you felt they had to have here in the third quarter to get back in this game. And you know that there was an emphasis on their side. Hey, we know this. We know where we are. But sometimes that B and now of course all scoring plays are reviewed and I think they’re going to take an extra long look at this one. The previous play is under review. They’re taking a peek at whether or not those feet were in bounds. And obviously a big call here in the end zone. And not just the feet. How about the hands? How is the ball possessed while the feet are hopefully getting down in bounds? That’s what they’re trying to look at to see if it all comes together. After review of the play, the ruling on the field stand. So they called it a touchdown originally and this will stay a touchdown after the video review. So they had it right. Sly on for the extra point. It’s up and good. And it’s now 28 to 14. Ners 28. So that drive consumes nine plays all told and the result in the end a Titans touchdown. Joey Sly now to kick off after the touchdown. Fighting his way through contact and a nice return sets him up pretty good here right at the 30 yd line. Here’s a look at the 49ers offense as they make their way out for their first possession of the second half. They were terrific in the first half. Built up a sizable lead and it’s just been cut into a bit following the opening drive score on the other side. But this is a unit that has to be itching to get the football again. You could say that again. They’ve got to be pretty eager because let’s face it, they’ve had to sit through halftime then sit on the sidelines and watch that drive. So you can bet that they’re saying, “Let’s get on with this. We got to go out there and get some more points. They start on the ground with McCaffrey. Oh, that’s just not fair. And now room to run and brought down but not before reaching the 45 yd line. 104 yds for him on the ground now as he has been terrific here this afternoon. Y. Yeah, another good run there. He’s been such a big part of their success here this afternoon. And that last carry, it puts him over 100 yards now for the day. Birdie looking to throw, looking for the out route. He’s got it. Complete to KD and they’ll get this to the 30 yd line before crossing over out of bounds. Another first down there as this one goes for 25. And now we get into the psychology of the whole thing because a lot of teams with a two-score lead in the third quarter, they almost become defensive with their offense, just playing not to lose. I think with this team, you got to figure at this point, this is a great spot for them to go into attack mode. Really try and put the hammer down and finish this one off. And maybe a measure of revenge there. He’s had his way in this one, but this time they get him behind the line. Well, that was one of the few times they’ve been able to contain him thus far. He’s over 100 yardds for the game, but he lost a bit off his total on that carry. So, after the loss of a yard, they’ll look to push forward here on second down and 11. back to throw. Perie and he’s going to go down. They get to and back at the 40. Finally hauled down for the first time this game. Multiple defenders in there to drop him. And they visited the end zone frequently in this one and obviously they wanted another one. But give credit to the defense there. They may not make the comeback, but Pride showed good sack on that play. Need something from deep in the bag of tricks here after first and second down. Went backwards. It’s third and very long. throwing here. Perie working the middle of the field and he’s got a man complete and they move this all the way down to the nine. They’re able to convert on third down and that sets up a first and goal. That’s another 49er first down. First and goal at the 9 yd line. Another big play right there. And this is where as an offense you can really put the hammer down. You’ve got a double-digit lead, but those other guys, they’ve been hanging around. A touchdown here could put this game out of reach. And that’s a strong step towards getting it done. And for one of the few times here today, this run’s not going to go anywhere. Only a yard on the pick up there. Second and goal. Not a whole lot there on first and goal. And that’s what you’re looking for defensively. He’ll certainly live with giving up just a yard or two in this situation. Here’s second and goal. Operating from the eight yd line. Birdie now to throw. A quick throw here. That’s complete. That time the completion goes for four yds and we’re set up with a third and goal. Well, there wasn’t much there with that hitch route. They didn’t gain what they expected. But sometimes when you call a hitch, you really don’t have an alternate to go to. You don’t have a second route to throw it to. So sometimes you have to rifle in there and hope for the best. They’ll look to throw on third and goal. Got a man right side. It’s McCaffrey and he’s able to get it down to the two yd line. A great job to hold him to just a yard there. Now it’s fourth and goal. Well, there certainly was a lot going on on that play. Every option in the end zone covered. No place to go with the ball. had to swing it out to the back. A good job running and getting him tackled in the open field. Here we go with McCaffrey and he’s not going to get in. They stop him at the one. McCaffrey turned away on fourth and goal and the Titans defense will celebrate the goal line stand. Well, they knew who to turn to on fourth down. Their horse, they needed the short yardage. He just couldn’t get it. And that’s a surprise because normally that’s bread and butter for them, right? Hand it to the big guy, let him go, pick up the first down, didn’t get it there. All credit to the defense. Usually, even if they know he’s coming, he can’t be stopped. And they got it done on that play. They’ll start this drive out on the ground and nothing much materializing there on the first down run. He’ll get a couple and that’s it. They still have time to get him established, but in my estimation, they’ve got to pick up the urgency here. They’ve got to get quickly in and out of the huddle and run off a bunch more plays. Second and seven. Here’s Pard again. They’ll try to get forward, but he’s going to be stopped in his tracks at about the three. Officially, no gain on the play and they’re left with a third and eight. Offensive line really didn’t give him any room to maneuver on that play. Things closed pretty quickly, didn’t they? And how about the wrap up at the end of that tackle left no doubt there would be no additional yardage to be found. On third down, it’s Pard and he’ll be tackled after a gain of four. Still three yd short. Fourth down. You know, we might start getting some props here in the booth. You know that one that says the D and then the fence that you put up next to it. How about that? They brought out the jumbo package and still couldn’t move him off the line of scrimmage enough to pick up that first down. Impressive. They were ready defensively for that jumbo set. Here’s Johnny Hacker now as he’s on to punt for Tennessee. And no return on this one as the fair catch is signaled for and taken. The 49ers offense and Brock Pury getting ready for this next possession. And he had it going in the first half, that’s for sure. He’s really had his way with his secondary. They’ve been powerless to stop him and he’ll look to keep it rolling right here. The 49er offense set to get this drive underway. They’ve got some stuff to build on from that last drive because they moved the football CD and then they tried to go for it on fourth down. Didn’t convert. Probably left a bitter taste in their mouths. I would say so. And I think that they go out in this series determined for that not to happen again. In fact, they don’t even want to get to a fourth down opportunity. They just want to make sure they get it done within the parameters that they’ve set for themselves. Run their offense, get it into the end zone. Yeah, I think a little bit of determination and a dash of anger. On first down, he’ll drop to throw. Connects with KD underneath and he’ll go out of bounds after taking it a little further down inside the 40. that tight end position, it just seems to continue to evolve every year in the NFL. Yeah, you’re getting really terrific athletes. A lot of them maybe were wide receivers at one point that continue to give you speed, great hands, and big bodies, which make them excellent targets for quarterbacks. And the reinforcements come in as they’re going to stop him behind the line. It’ll be a loss of a yard and that’s going to lead to a third and four coming up. The run defense, they have been porous at times today, but not that last go around. No, they really tightened it up, didn’t they? They finally got themselves a win because all game long we’ve seen them get gashed. This time they played the responsibilities, played their keys, and made a nice stop. Pass taken in by his big tight end. And he’s going to have another first down as the tackles made at the Titans 20 yd line. 49ers 17 yds on the pickup there and the drive will continue and that’s well executed there on third down and I love the confidence that they had to let their tight end try and find some space in the middle of the field right in their quarterback’s line of vision and QBs love to make that easy throw and they hooked up there for a first down and he’ll get this down only to the 18 two yards on the pick up there it’ll Second and eight. We talk about defenders, specifically linebackers, keeping their eyes in the right spot. He had that eye down the entire time. And you know that’s not easily done because they throw a lot of misdirection at you. They try and fool you and get your eyes in the wrong place. But you’re right about that one. He correctly figured that one out and made a really nice play. And he’ll be out of bounds about a half to a full yard shy of the five. It’s a nice pick up of 12 yds and it gives him a first and goal. Well, this has certainly been a nice drive, but the way they’ve spread the football around here, they even get the fullback involved in the passing game. That’s got to cause a lot of consternation on the defensive side. You’ve got to cover him, too. That makes things really difficult. On first down, this is McCaffrey and maybe a measure of revenge there. He’s had his way in this one, but this time they get him behind the line. a loss of a full three yds and now it’s second down. The short field shrinks even more with the type of bodies they brought in on that play. Those extra tight ends, they weren’t able to secure their blocks and that one ended up going backwards. They go play action here. Perie got a man and he hits him in stride. That was the eighth play of the drive. So a somewhat fitting pickup of eight yards. It’s now third and goal. So, they’ll get a little extra time to come up with his third down play as we’ve played three quarters. We’ll return with more after this. You’re watching the NFL Auda Sports. Back now here in Santa Clara. It’s 49er football here. They’ve got the lead as well as we get set to start the fourth and final quarter. Perie on the sneak and I don’t think he got there. No, they stop him right where it all started. So call that no gain on the sneak. And now they’re still a yard short here on fourth. Brandon third and goal from the one. And they go quarterback sneak. And they expected a surge up front. The surge came from the defense. Yeah, it looked like there was no surprise defensively. They were ready. Yeah, totally stacked it up. Unable to get it on third down. They’ll run for it. McCaffrey and across the goal line into the end zone. Touchdown 49ers. Touchdown Christian McCaffrey with his second touchdown of the afternoon and the ners have pretty well put it away here in the fourth quarter. But this defense held out as long as they could but ultimately the running game wears him down from the oneyd line. And that gets set up throughout the entire drive, doesn’t it? And when you put those big bodies and determination into that carry, the end result. Pinierro’s extra point up and good and the lead now to three touchdowns at 21. Got it. Now after the touchdown, here’s Pinero to kick it off. And they’ll get him down inside the 30 at the 27. Here’s Tennessee ready to begin this drive offensively. 27 yd line. We said it at halftime that they would need a nearly perfect second half to erase that deficit that they were facing CD. But unfortunately, the second half has pretty much been a carbon copy of the first. Yeah, that early lead was almost insurmountable the way their opponent was playing. And partner, they do have some good news though. This one is getting close to being over and they can try and hit the reset button starting tomorrow. Here’s Ward. Quick hitter here. It’s complete and he’s out of bounds. Able to take this one up to the 35. So, the completion results there in nine yards. And they’ll have a second and one forthcoming. And his play caller does a nice job of giving him an easy throw to start this drive. And he takes advantage of it. The completion sets up a manageable second down. Second and one. Over the middle into traffic and that’s complete. Seven catches for him now. And this last one, a first down. This has to go down as one of the simpler routes in the playbook, but oh so effective. Nice completion there. Keeps the sticks moving. They’ll look to throw here on first down. And the Niners get there and bring him down. He couldn’t get rid of it. He takes a sack for a loss of six to bring up second down. Second down. It has been a rough afternoon for him trying to get rid of the football. C. That’s now five sacks. How’d you like to be the offensive coordinator, the offensive line coach trying to come up with an answer for this pass rush? What blocking assignments do you change? Can guys play a little bit better? And we’re seeing the end result on the scoreboard. Long day in the pocket for their quarterback. Second and long. Got his man a conquo and he’ll be taken down but not before he works it past the 50. He had the touchdown earlier. This one’s going to get him a first down. I can put my defensive cap on right now. And I know they’re saying don’t give up any big plays now. They’ve controlled this game throughout and all they want to do is see it through to the end. I think they let their guard down a little bit with that last completion. Sometimes when you’re trying not to give up bigger plays, you don’t react as fast as you should on other throws. And he’s taken down inside the 30. Another first down as he went right back to the same well this time for 17 yds. Titans first down. It’s a gain of 17 yds and a Titans first down. A three-score game here late. You can probably rule out the comeback, but certainly some kind of a moral victory to be had if they can get a few more points to close things out. And to that end, a nice pass play there to push things down field. Yeah, and we know in this league a loss is a loss and no one wants anything to count as a moral victory or boy, something that feels a little bit cheap. But if they trim that lead down to just two scores, that’s still a benefit to this squad. If you’re a selfish player and you’re throwing the ball, you’re cool with the completion. Maybe not so cool with the yardage loss, though, huh? Yeah, you went you went backwards on the yardage. Hey, kind of works like a sack for the defense there. Yeah, it’s a really big play for them, right? Able to figure it out, sniff it out, and finish it off. And they’ll be inside the 25 now at the 24. to Tony Pard. It’s a gain of nine yds. And this is third down. And on third and five, this will be the eighth play of the drive. They’ll look to throw again. Here’s a screen now for Pard. A nice little juke and he gets it inside the 10 to the nine. They’re able to convert on third down and that sets up a first and goal. With the score where it is, this was probably going to be four down territory if they didn’t convert there. But what a nice job of working his way open, making sure he secured the catch and setting up first and goal to the air again. Ward a cockwell holds it in left side. Only a yard in the completion. It’s second and goal. And they ran just a little underneath route here on first and goal, but there’s really not a whole lot of room to operate this close to the goal line. He’s just not able to get loose after the catch. Here’s second and goal operating from the 8 yd line. Throwing is Ward. This is caught. Touchdown. Complete manner. a sevenyd touchdown grab and the Titans have got it back to a two-score game here in the fourth. So, a little bit of a let down there defensively. I mean, look, you’re still two scores to the good, CD, but things may be a little more uncomfortable than they had hoped. Yeah, if you’d kept him out of the end zone there, this game’s over. You’ve locked the door on them. Instead, it’s still open a little bit and they’ve got a puncher’s chance. Now Joey Sly for the point after and the lead will be cut down to 14. So that one a pretty timeconsuming 10play drive and it ends with a Tennessee score. Joey Joey Sly now to kick off after the touchdown. And he takes this near the 25. Just a little pass there. Called it the 26. The ners offense and Christian McCaffrey ready to go once more and he’s been the focal point of this offense. And when you get a performance like this, you can almost invariably add that the offensive line play has also been stellar. And that’s definitely been the case here. The San Francisco offense ready to start their next drive. Well, there are two scorers on the plus side. Still time here in this fourth quarter, but maybe you start thinking about playing keepaway. Yeah, I think here’s the situation. You’re not thinking touchdowns anymore. You’re just thinking first downs to keep up with your theme there. Playing keepaway. First downs, they can’t touch the ball. So that complicates things a bit here. 18 yds to go now on second down. Perial set up to throw it here. And he’s going to go down again. Sebastian Joseph Day breaking through for the sack. So Brandon, we sat in with a lot of coaches and when they talk about things they want to accomplish offensively, I’m not sure that sack and sack are on their play sheet. The Ners on third down. They’ve had plenty of success. Eight conversions. Looking for a ninth. This will be third and forever. And he’ll get to the 29 yd line. Brought down there. It’ll be a pick up of 16, but they’ll remain short of the marker. And it’s fourth down. This offense really put themselves in a tough spot on first and second down, needing long yardage to try and pick up a first down. And they ended up getting a great run. Explosive, picked up nice yardage. You don’t expect to be in this situation on fourth down. But guess what? It all started with what happened on first and second down. Really put him behind the eightball. And he’s able to get this one out closer to midfield across the 45. 33 yds is the distance on the punt there. And it’ll be Titan football. They’ve got good starting field position as they come up here first and 10 at their own 46. They’ll start this drive out on the ground and he’s got this one across midfield into 49er territory. 40 yds rushing for him now to this point. Now that was an excellent run. And when you see that happen, that’s when you’re seeing guys doing their job and then some people doing a little bit more. Offensive linemen and tight ends, they’re expected to block. But the wide receivers, all they want to do is catch passes. So when they block on a big time running play and create extra space, you’ve kind of hit the jackpot there. And here he’ll be brought down a little shy of the 35 at the 36. That one a first down pick up of eight. That’s a good nice crisp run for a first down. And I wonder if the defense might have been loosened up a little bit. Maybe anticipating a pass instead of the run that they got. Backto back good plays. Have him on the move on first down. Going to run again here with Pard. Oh, he’s got some breathing room and all the way inside the 15 before they drop it. Y 23 yds on the pickup there and a first. First down. It’s a gain of 23 yds. Well, pardon, I have to say they caught him in the right defense there. Nickel set fifth defensive back on the field and they love to run against that because now you typically get a bigger blocker on a smaller defender. Yeah, cuz those DBs like you, they want the interception. They’re not as worried about the running play, right? Not at all. And I I used I still remember being in school and one of my offensive line teammates used to say, “Boy, I love to come downfield and hit you little people.” Good run there. They’ve called his number a lot this afternoon. You wonder how much tread is left on those tires. We certainly do. But I always think back to one of my favorite coaches in the NFL. And he used to have a meeting with his running backs every year in the off season and say, “Look, as many times as you’re going to carry the ball, you should be able to carry it one more time. So, make sure you get in shape.” And he’ll get this one down to about the 10 yd line. Call it a gain of four. And it’ll leave him with a third down and six to go. four and this is third down. Ward got a man and it’s taken in for a Titans touchdown. Van Jefferson a 9yd touchdown grab and the Titans have made it a one-sore game again here in the fourth. There was a lot of zip on that pass and baseball might have called that a frozen rope. I like it when you bring the diamond into the game. I’m going back to the grid iron. Had some heat on that bad boy. Sometimes you throw a touchdown pass and sometimes you throw what? A touchdown strike. There you go. Well, that’s my man in concert. Slide for the pat and that’ll cut the lead down now to a touchdown. The score a drive that time of six plays and it was all capped off by the Van Jefferson touchdown reception. Joey Slide. Joey Sly now to kick off after the touchdown. And it’s a pretty good return here as he’ll get this up to the 29. The ners set to take over on offense. Things sure were looking good for him at the half. Heck, off the air. You and I were just saying they might run away with this thing and cruise to a victory. Not anymore. Yeah, the cruise control has to be off at this point. Now you’ve got to match the gas yourself again. Who’s gonna step up and make a big play for you? Who’s going to take care of business now that you’re being pressed? It is definitely go time for them at this moment. All of a sudden, clinging to a slim lead and hoping to hold on to that lead and he gets this up across the 35 before he’s out of bounds. They’ll wind up getting seven on the play and that’ll bring up second down. It certainly feels like there more stars at the tight end position than there were even 10 years ago. And I think it’s become more of a glamour position because of the ways it can hurt a defense. And guys want to be involved. They can be in line close to the line of scrimmage. They can split out like receivers. But hands, route running, speed, and some toughness to go across the middle. You put it all together, you got heck of a tight end candidate. Still second down. They were looking good on second down, but now they’re backed up five yds by the false start. And it’s second and eight. Now Py wide open receiver complete and he’ll be out of bounds just shy of the 40. 28 yds the gain there on the catch and run. Had to put that ball in there with a little extra zip, but he put it right where it needed to be. Yeah, and that little extra pace that he had on the pass, that required a little extra concentration for him, didn’t it? Ball can get on you pretty quick in that manner and he handled it well and picked up the first down. Here’s Pier Saul on the jet sweep. The Titans going to use the first of their timeouts. And as the two teams talk it over on their respective sidelines, we take a break at the 44 yd line. Now they contend with a second and 12 after the loss. Birdie pass caught by Pearl. Now Tennessee going to use the second of their timeouts. And as the two teams talk it over on their respective sidelines, we take a break. First down. First and 10 at the 18 yd line. So from inside the 20, here’s first and 10 at the 18. Perie bootlegging it. That would complete to Tanis. Now the Titans will use their third and final timeout. And as the two teams talk it over on their respective sidelines, we take a breakd. Second and nine. Here’s Pertie. That’s complete to Pieraw and he’ll go down here at the 12 yd line. Be a gain of five. And now we’ve got a third and four. Third and four. in search of four yards here to pick up the first down. Perie from the gun on third down. That is caught and he’ll be brought down with the first down after a gain of about 11 as that takes us to the two-minute warning. Fourth quarter down to the final two minutes and we’ve got a one-sore game. And they’ll indeed take a knee. Really? Are you kidding me? Another yard would probably put this thing in the books. It’s second and one. Robinson. No signal. And now they say he did not get in. He is stonewalled at the one. I’m assuming they’re keeping this football on the ground, right? I would think so because you’re looking at the clock, that’s in your favor. You look at the geography of the field right where you are. That’s in your favor as well. Keep it on the ground. Keep pounding. Run that clock down. You got everything working in your direction. Clock counting down toward 40 seconds as they take the knee. Listen, anytime you take a knee to end a game, that means you’ve won it. So, it doesn’t matter whether it’s home or on the road, but there’s something a little extra special about doing it in front of your home crowd, isn’t there? And the home crowd applauding. They’re happy with what they’ve seen. Chalk this one up in the lefth hand column for a win. Yeah, that’s right. Head to the locker room. Throw the wristbands in the crowd for the kids. Your gloves, your towels. Get to share it with the home team. He’s got it. and he’s across for the late touchdown. And in the final seconds, that one should just about put a capper on this game. So, a little icing on the cake there before the clock hits all zeros. What a way to finish things off. Exactly what you want. Not much time and a touchdown to put things away. now to add the extra point and the lead is up to 14. So that one a long 11play drive and it’s polished off by a touchdown for San Francisco. Now after the touchdown, here’s Pinero to kick it off. DK from his end zone. So that last touchdown sealed it there, part kickoff there at the end, just a formality to knock the final seconds off and send everyone home.
