Steve Cohen comments on the Mets’ offseason so far

  1. He’s not Wilpon. Wilpons don’t make Citi Field nicer, don’t sign both Soto and Lindor. I understand why we’re all upset. I am too for losing Pete but the writings on the wall with Pete for awhile. I don’t think Stearns and Cohen wanted to be under the contracts of Lindor, Soto, Alonso and Nimmo for 5 more years. It didn’t work out last year so why run it back with the same crew. Stearns needs to use that money and get substantial replacements for those guys and there’s still so much time left in the offseason

  2. “Lots of offseason left to put a playoff team on the field”

How do you lose the franchise leader in home runs and the best closer in baseball and think you can put better pieces in their place?

  3. Without Pete (or a Pete equivalent), Juan Soto would be paid $800 million to walk 150 times a season.

It’s the same issue the Nationals had before trading him. 8 automatic outs and Soto.

  4. In other words, he’s saying I have no idea what we’re gonna do, but let’s give us enough time to do it

  5. Maybe it’s time to stop pushing the casino since it’s basically happening and worry about the product on the field. You not only needed to build the rotation but you managed to lose three all stars and currently have nothing to show . Hopefully they can sign some legit players.

  6. Tbh I’m less shocked about Alonso at least in sequence if not in vacuum, but it still hurts. And objectively the room to not end up with a significantly worse team is shrinking, and Stearns’ doubledown refusal to buy an ace FA starter only speeds that along. I’d thought King and Imai were ideal but he doesn’t seem to want either let alone both.

I was never in favor of torching the farm for a Skubal trade, but now even if we managed to get him without doing that it still wouldn’t be worth it in the end. We’re not pushing the finish line anymore and now we know he wouldn’t stay either. Even Peralta probably. I’m guessing we’ll just coast on the current staff with the rising rookie trio.

Seems more likely Vientos is the interim-to-longterm 1B now. I’m all for trying it but I feel like adding, very specifically, OF Bellinger just went from critical to mandatory. I’m still a McNeil fan and have nothing against Taylor being 4th but they cannot *both* start. Further addition of Tucker or trade for someone like Robert (was Buxton confirmed unavailable?) are also still interesting. I support the prospects but it doesn’t sound like they’re imminent.

  7. This asshole can figure out a way to tear down the chop shops and build a billion dollar casino, but can’t figure out how to build a decent rotation.

  8. words are meaningless. Until they build a team that wins consistently, I don’t care what quotes are offered.

  9. Who is left out there to sign? Wat ch Stearns trade Tong, Sproat, McLean for Freddy Peralta. Then resign after next season and return to the Brewers. I heard he’s gonna trade for Severino and give Manae and Montas an extension

  10. A life without Pete Alonso is one I had once before, but one without him now feels absolutely pointless. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined. I hate baseball, I hate sports, and I especially hate the goddamn mets. See you next week.

  11. Until I see what the 10 million dollar toilet man these 2 days rival midnight masscare. How can you be worst than the Wilpons.

  12. Good. Nice to see some common sense in the room.

Not only did both Alonso and Nimmo not win much during their Mets tenure but they were partly responsible for the absurd run support DeGrom received over his Mets tenure, leading to his departure.

  13. “there is a lot of offseason left” any time I hear someone talk about how it’s totally not over we can come back from this, I know they’re fucking hosed.

  14. Look at the baseball the Dodgers and Blue Jays played. We are nowhere near that level. Our pitching, hitting, and gloves are all meh. Not to mention all the rumors of a toxic clubhouse. We got Soto the diva that can’t be bothered to hustle. Lindor and McNeil choking each other. No clear leadership with both Marte and Lindor trying to take the reins. Meanwhile Dodgers got some of the biggest names in baseball and their egos are left at the door.

A shakeup is needed. The current team does not work. 2024 vibes left with Iglesias.

  15. He def wanted this. Saw that this core barely scrape (and miss) the playoffs every year. Prob said its time to blow it up. Cant blame him

  16. This toolbag says the same thing every year either the same result. Can’t wait until we load up on .233 hitters in their mid-30’s to support Lindor and Soto

  17. We were going to have to pay for the leagues most expensive 1B, most expensive closer, most expensive outfielders, top 3 SS, and won 83 games. Allocating the money elsewhere may help the team long term

  18. Key words: playoff team. Not championship team. Not contender.

Honestly, the Mets are very far off right now from the latter two.

But the goal was to win championships not make the playoffs. This makes me worry that the plan is to make moves around the edges like Stearns did in Milwaukee to put the team in position to be a playoff team but not really contend for anything but the third wild card.

  19. He is right. This is not the complete product.
We lost with Pete, Nimmo and Diaz we can’t do worse. Reports that Mets did not even offer Alonso a contract means they knew and have a plan.
At least I pray they do. LGM

  20. Actually, long suffering Mets fans don’t want a playoff team. We want a World Series Team. My guess is that management knows that the Mets are a year or two away and their plan is to see if their Farms provide a strong pitching staff and then they will go big.

  21. maybe Stearns can sign 10 more mediocre middle relievers to minor league contracts. That worked out well last year.
