Nitpicking A Really Good Hockey Team And Winter Olympic Drama | DLLS Stars Podcast
Bang. Just glaring at you wondering for the first time since we started doing this. Are you going to swear during the cold open on there, right? What is this with Luds? Must be a cough drop. You know what I would see say about that? That’s been chewing on. Look at this thing. That I would say that you probably shouldn’t eat that. You should probably get some fresh ones. What’s the expiration date on your cough drop? I don’t know. Same as the Lunchable that’s up in the fridge and your apple. If you aren’t aware, we had a game last night. We have another game tomorrow and they just keep on rolling along. We got a daily show today and I’m a little concerned about our little buddy here because he almost cursed during the cold open. That was really close. Luds has made a career out of it. But Sam, it’s okay. Sean’s here today as well. We have a lot to get to. Let’s get to it. You’re on DLLS. [Music] [Music] [Music] Hey everybody, this is the DLS Stars podcast on a Wednesday, December 10th, as you just almost kicked your computer off. I’m having a tough time. You are. We need to get Sam a little reset here. Craig Lewick, Sam Nestler, Owen Newkerk, Ryan Va is our producer, and Sean Shapiro joins us from his very toasty but cold venue. Warm inside, chilly outside. And before we get into everything, because I don’t think we can hear Sean, and it’s not Sean’s fault, let’s talk about the new hats coming up here on the DLLS website. They are available now. Look at them. Four brand new styles, part of the all city headwear collection. They have some great stuff from the other cities, but we’re worried about DLLS. And look at the green one there. As Luds would say, we got a green one. That’s a hockey related Dallas Stars style DLLS hat. So check those out. We have the Mavs one that’s next to it, the white one with the flag and the crest. Our speaker is not working. So when I say hi Sean and he says hi back, we can’t hear him. Hello. Is that right? Hello. Can they hear him? Yeah. They might actually be able to hear Sean. So if you’re joining live right now, you can probably hear him. But that is going to be hard to have. I heard you for the whole intro. Go. You can hear us. Can you hear us now? I can hear Can you hear me? We can hear Sean, too. We’re back. That was weird. But everybody, someone says the stream is frozen. Okay. Well, hopefully we’re ready to go. Okay. Here we go, everybody. Let’s just start right from the top. Let’s go. This is a live podcast. Sean is here. Sam is here. Les is here. Get your hats. We’re going to start today, Sean, with some nitpicking our technical difficulties. But as we were talking about on the postgame show last night, it’s hard to It’s not hard. It’s interesting that when a team is winning as much as the Dallas Stars are right now, the storylines start to dry up because it’s a lot more notable or easier to come up with critical talking points when a team is struggling because there’s it’s pretty apparent what you need to debate, what you need to work on. Maybe some players are not fitting in the right way. when you never lose or have what is it a 11game point streak you’re have a 13game road point streak they have two regulation losses since late October what do you complain about what do you what do you dissect so today we’re back on we have to nitpick I got nothing to complain about I got nothing to say narrow thing about a really good hockey team so Sean take the maybe the one thing that we can come up with that might be a talking point at the moment for the Dallas Arts. Uh we talk about some player usage. Is that was that where we’re going with on this? I think so. We’re gonna Yeah. I mean, it’s the regular season, right? like this team. It’s kind of fun that we’re at this spot because I thought I I thought when we had the co when they had the coaching change and we looked back at what happened with the roster and everything like that, I I thought this regular season was going to be a little bit more interesting in a bad way, right? Like I thought there was going to be more of I thought we were going to have more questions of like I don’t know is Glenn Goldson going to be able to figure out. I thought is this gonna happen? Is this going to happen? And instead this team has taken every single moment of adversity and soared over it, right? Like between the injuries and everything like that. And from what’s gone from we’ve kind of reached the spot of it and it’s it’s hilarious that this is all happening at the same time as what the Avalanche are doing in Denver, right? Where everyone in this room and everyone in the entire NHL is just already circled. What is it going to be? May 10th is going to be game one is going to be game one at Ball Arena probably depending. I mean based off how both teams are doing right now. like we might as well just skip through all of this and just straight to that because that’s going to be how everyone’s view is going to be determined of of Well, the Avalanche would love that after last year’s first round exit. Yes, they would. They would. And it’s so it’s so I guess we’re gonna I guess we can nitpick about player usage and where things are going. And I mean, gosh, this team is getting healthier and now we’re find we have to find ways to create problems about guys who have gotten healthy. So, it’s I don’t know. It’s I’m It’s a It’s a wonderful problem to have, but I mean I was telling you Owen, I was telling you on the phone today, right? Like it was hard to pick villains, right? Like like just to go through like I like you go through and like pick bad guys. I’m like this team is the bad guy. This like it’s you are like in like this this the Stars team is the bad guy and it’s the in a good way, right? like you’re the one beating the crud out of everyone else and and and winning and and everything like that and and and you keep finding ways to come overcome this and it’s a really cool thing. Not the greatest for content. So Owen, where are we going? Okay, I was just going to say it’s funny that Sean picked his one villain was the only guy who took a single point away from the Stars in the in the standings in their loss in overtime to the Rangers. That’s is that’s as far as we’re reaching at this point. and he hurt Tyler Sean for at least I’m just saying like that that there’s only one person that has taken anything off the board for Dallas. That’s that’s where we’re at right now. Yeah, I know. I would imagine that that is a difficult error. Well, we talked to this a bit yesterday. Sam had a fantastic article, great reporting on Matt Duchain and we we and again you don’t wish for injuries, but we hope that Sam continues to unearth stuff like this because that’s what you know his boots on the ground gives us that leg up that maybe some places don’t have or you know, who knows? But that was great. You had a great in-depth conversation with Duchine about his concussion. I highly encourage you to go watch our Monday pod or our VOD, which I’m not sure if that’s live yet or not, where we clip that specifically, but go to our website, alldls.com, Sam’s article, where he wrote up very similarly to what we talked about about Matt Duchain. So, the nitpicky part goes to how do you get Matt Duchain back up to speed? because Lud’s through the first couple games of him playing, he hasn’t looked bad in the general talent side of things, but he doesn’t look in rhythm as you would expect for a guy that missed a bunch of time. And he doesn’t look like he’s completely gone to reactionary, instinctive, absorbing of systems yet. He’s still because he doesn’t have those 25 games that everybody else has. So my question is twofold. How do you get him up to speed? And then maybe the broader question to all of four of us is who does he eventually play with? Because before Tyler Sean’s injury, it was obvious Sean and Duchain were a pair. In fact, Andrew is in the chat right now asking me about Mason Marchman. What if he became available on the trade block? And I said, I think it was a month ago or so. I said, Marchman is a guy I’m keeping an eye on because if Seattle’s not any good, he’s be an expiring contract. He’d be inexpensive, especially with retention. And reunite Duchain Sean and Marchman. That makes total sense. They have instant chemistry. Well, both of Matt Duchain’s wingers of that effective line are gone right now. Tyler will be back at some point. Whether it’s the playoffs this year or next season, he will be back. But Matt Duchain is sort of like a guy without a line right now. So my question to you guys is where do you think he best fits or is that something we’ll have to figure out over the next couple of months? Well, I’ll answer the first part. I I believe you had a four and a half minute inner leading into that. Yes. Okay. I think you asked about getting Matt Duchain up to wherever Matt Matt Duchain gets Matt Duchain up to where Matt Duchain is supposed to be or where he thinks he’s going to be. I you can put him wherever. And I I think when when Matt Duchain get gets back to playing center ice, then I think we found where Matt Duchain is back to where he feels comfortable or Gully feels comfortable, whoever that is that’s not putting him in the middle. Well, here’s the the one guy you put him with. Sam Steel, Sam Steel goes with everybody, you know, and again, I I don’t know who the the fit is going to be there. I would like to think it would be Maverick Bourke. I mean, I just think that he might be your next guy. You have to find guys that can unfortunately the guys that you need to put with Matt are already on the top two lines because and they’re finding chemistry there. Yeah, that’s the important part. I mean, and so Matt Duchain is going to have to basically will himself into some situations, I think. But to me, I think it what would happen if you put steel and bork with him? You know, you got a digger out there and you got a guy, you know, I I just you have to be able to compliment Matt Duchain. And to compliment Matt Duchain is to put him with Wyatt and Ranton and Hint and Robo. I mean, because he’s a passer, he’s a puck distributor, he’s a playmaker. So, I it doesn’t do Matt probably uh it’s a disservice to put him with guys that aren’t 20 goal scorer. And, you know, and now are they going to make a move for something? I don’t know. Well, I don’t know if they’re going to find a 30 goal scorer out there they can, you know, bring in here, but um maybe maybe what happens with Matt is he ends up kind of being like Jamie Ben when some minutes were taken away from him. What they did is they found Jamie on the power play and so he he he ultimately his minutes stayed about the same, but he was getting out there on the power play, you know, and there there’s a guy right there that maybe you could put Jamie with Matt, but that means that there’s somebody else in the top six where you took Jamie from. Mhm. Um I just think these are all good problems for for the coaching staff because right now whatever they’re doing like to to ask the question like nitpicking question I don’t know what you talk about there there’s they just find ways to get things done and again it’s a great problem. It’s not a problem. Um you know and you talk about and I think about Colorado the AS are doing they’re just staying ahead of Dallas. But the good news is they haven’t had to go through all these injuries. They’ve been pretty healthy. I mean, I think Logan O’Connor is the one guy that comes to mind that has Wedgewood was hurt for a bit, but Wedgewood was incredible, so it didn’t really matter. Well, Wedgie got he’s going to be back in. I mean, I think they took him out. Yeah, they they had to take a spotter took him out last night, wasn’t it? But but I just think that I I I just they they’ve had their whole lineup. Dallas hasn’t had their lineup in there. So, does that mean they’re going to get even better or bringing everybody back healthy? Are there too many cooks in the kitchen? Yeah, the good problem to have is a good way to say it because I’m I’m when I’m looking at the lineup and I’m thinking Matt, you’re right. Matthew Shane needs to be at center. He’s he’s far better at center than he is at wing. He’s been playing it for for a long time. But when you’re looking at lineup and you’re thinking like we could go third line center, but then it moves Ritz Kovian. That’s okay. That’s fine. When you’re moving your rookie bottom six guys somewhere else, that’s okay. And same thing with with Bourke or Beck or or Fox, any of those guys, if you’re having to move them lower, that’s okay. That’s because you’re putting a guy like Matt Duchain in there. The question I think for that Les is talking about is let’s say they put him in there and it’s with Steel and Bour to start. Maybe. Yeah. Or Rick Kovian to start. That’s where you’re putting your thinking on that left side. Maybe that’s where you find some help at the deadline and all of a sudden Matthew Shane has he’s not going to have a 40 goal score on his left but have someone a little more offensively inclined and then you’re even deeper. I think that the well if they do that because right now if it’s Ritzcoian or back or or Borc Steel’s still up with Johnson and Rantin with Jamie Ben playing right wing. Yep. Or Jaime’s up there. Oh yeah, there’s your answer. And they’re trying and they’re missing a right wing. But something there. This is a there’s a kind of a whack-a-ole here. Sean, I want to get your take, but we’re not going to throw it to you and say we have to go to an ad break. that we’re going to have you go throw to you after said ad break here on the DLS Stars podcast. All right, we’re picking up the conversation about Matt Duchain. So Sean, let’s hear you weigh in on the on the subject. Yeah. Um, once again, I go back to one of the things we talked about earlier, how everything builds towards that second round series against Colorado. And I know it’s kind of crazy to talk about playoff matchups and stuff like that, but I that’s how I start thinking because this entire season is going to be judged by what happens in that seven game set against Colorado in May. So I think about it this way. Um, do I want Justin Ritz Kovian as my third line center against the Colorado Colorado Avalanche in the playoffs? Probably not. I probably want Wyatt Johnston in that role. And that’s when I just thinking long term and building things out and how you you play things out and figure things out. I know there’s been such a great uh combination and every and Randy can play with anyone. Let’s just call that what it is. But isn’t maybe the Stars are in a better spot if we find a way if you find a way for um Wyatt Johnson to be your third line center in in the postseason and and basically be that matchup guy that can move up and down and and and attack things and everything like that. I don’t um and I think with that that means putting Duchine with Ranton and seeing where it goes and trying that out like with Duchain in the middle with Randon, right? like I know they’ve played together with them both on the wing and then giving Wyatt a bit of that responsibility, giving Wyatt that kind of skeleton key unlock role of you know what, your line is going to technically be third listed or whatever it is, but you’re going to be the one and I I think that’s the way I would start to plan and look at it. Obviously, you go and get someone else before the deadline. You do some shopping. we start to figure out where there’s there’s some other things. But based off the roster in front of me right now, I would start to look at it that way because I think as good as a story as Justin Ritzovian has been and as well as as he’s been working, I’d rather I don’t want him I don’t want him go I don’t want him to be my third line center, especially when I go on the road in the playoff series and someone’s going to be able to match up against I I want to be able to have Johnston in that role down the middle there. So, um, again, these are crazy problems for us to be discussing right now in December. I mean, do you know how many teams right now would be killing to be like, how many fan bases of teams would be killing to have, oh, let’s talk about some playoff matchups. Let’s talk about our second round playoff game round. We’re talking second round. Like, we are we are getting we are getting so far ahead of ourselves and not even by our fault. It’s literally by the fault of what the Stars in Avalanche have done. They are so far ahead of the rest of the league. I was looking at it today, right? Because um I’m sitting down to get ready to watch the Detroit game tonight when they play Calgary tonight. It’s like the Wings have gone I watch I’ve watched the Wings go from three points outside of the playoffs to first in the Atlantic in a span of four days. Right. Like that’s what And the Yeah. And now they’re Yeah. And they wouldn’t even touch the they wouldn’t even be close to the top three in the central. Like it’s wild how far the rest of the team the league the league is behind these two teams. And Detroit is 12 points. Did I look at that right? Yeah, they’re 12 points on Stars right now. And they’re two week two weeks from today. Two weeks from today they’re Detroit. Dallas will be in Detroit. I will be at that game. We’ll be doing the the show postgame live. There is a more likelihood that Detroit will be in first place in their division that day than the Stars, right? And it’s clearly one one of those teams is obviously a Cup contender and the other one hasn’t made the playoffs for a decade. So there is it’s it is a wild setup and uh yeah, get me Wyatt Johnston. I want Wyatt driving his own line. I want Wyatt to be that guy in the playoffs where when you look at other teams like, “Okay, what the hell do we do against this Stars team?” Because we have to figure out they they they’re literally Wyatt Johnston is going headtohead with our our third line or we have to play strength against strength and all of a sudden, oh no, now we’re giving a better matchup to Matt Duchain’s line. I I think these are all great problems for the stars to have and for me right now the big thing with Duchain and I’m curious to pick Lud’s L’s brain on this. I’ve been fascinated, Luds, by kind of his ramp up in in usage as he’s come back, right? Like, so there’s we’ve talked about him getting back to the center, right? and is in kind of your experience both from guys you played with and then maybe even with working with guys in that 18 new age group and I don’t know if that applies or not but just like as you’ve worked with players coming back from injury and talk to guys like what is the what’s the line between going full boore and like is it if and being ready to go 16 17 minutes a game do you really need the minutes to be built up in the game or is that something coaches just say to be a little bit overly cautious What you talking about, Duchaine? Yeah. I think I think what you have to do I think what you do with Matt again, you’re going to monitor Matt and I’m sure they have a conversation with him every day, Sean, right? And how did you feel last night? Blah blah blah. I think you get to like game five and then you ramp him up and you know and like yeah, I’m good. I’m feeling great and then I think you start putting him into those situations, you know, where he would normally be in the middle of the ice. I’m, you know, I’ve said it a few times here. I’m I’m curious like they have to see the same thing we’re saying. He just looks he doesn’t look uncomfortable. It’s just not it’s just not his natural position to play on the wall. And it’s and honestly, I don’t even know if it’s good to judge him um of the couple games that we’ve seen because he’s not playing with the type of players that he’s used to playing with, right? So, the one the other guy here, I mean, we keep and Sam Steel is a centerman. He’s been a centerman pretty much his whole life. Yes. Why can’t Sam Steel play in the middle on the third line? Yeah, I’m just saying if remember when I just said Wyatt played on the up on the on the right side with Duchine and and Jamie, whatever that may be, but Sam Steel and Wyatt’s faceoff percentage, I don’t even know if he’s 50% in his career or whatever. I’m not saying that he can’t get there, but you guys are faster than that than I am. But Sam Steel, I guarantee is over 50% because I think he was a a centerman. Did he start out on the fourth line and work his way to the first or was he in the third line? Sam Steel this year, was he more of a third or fourth line? Oh, that was they he Steel was the initial pick to be the left wing to No, no, no. That was my dumbass idea in the summer. I’m talking about when Sam Steel was playing at center. Oh. Oh, yeah. But he was a centerman. He was third or fourth line center. Yeah. And and then because guys had to play out of position and I just said, “Well, how Sam Steel, maybe that’s the guy.” I didn’t know he was going to be up there, you know, for the whole year. And he’s done a good job with with what he is. I mean that a polite way of saying that because he’s not as gifted as the other guys. He does a lot of the grunt work for him. Do you think there’s luds do you think there’s a different archetype or player type that can work better on the wing to center than other I I do. So I’m just just going to throw this to you since I know you’ll have a really good thought on this. There’s obviously different player types where there’s some centers that you could throw on the wing and you’re like, you know what, they play the same game there. And then there’s other guys who you throw on the wing and it’s a completely different game. And vice versa, right? Like there’s some wingers where there’s there’s some there’s a couple puck driving wingers in this league where they are so good at driving play down the wall because they use the wall as a they’re able to manipulate dimensions of the wall that draw others into mistakes that they wouldn’t have if they were in the middle of the ice. And so I think that’s a is an important talk the talking talking point when you talk about Duchain and talk about players in general where I think there’s a lot of centers and there’s a lot of guys in the game that probably can move from one to the other because their game is very similar one way or the other. Duchaane and I think Steels is that way. I think Steel is is a game where Sam Steel is going to do the same thing whether he’s left wing, right wing or center. Duchaane’s game led to your point. It’s been interesting watching obviously just the small sample size the two games to me. I watched him there was a shift uh last night and when I when I went and rewatched the game back this morning there’s a shift where he was along the wall and he just felt he didn’t have the ability to cut both ways and it was the like you could kind of see he had the puck on a stick. Yeah. he didn’t have the ability to cut both ways. And when he lost that, he kind of all of a sudden it seemed like he had this little panic about him that we don’t ever see. And with a skilled player, with someone like that, it becomes, okay, we have to get him back here. With Steel, I look at it and I’m like, well, he’s just going to crash and bang either way, right? So, I know I know we’re saying, but I know we’re saying things that you said last night, things were said, but I think that’s an important thing to talk about with this Hall Duchain thing because I am often a big person who pushes back against positions in hockey. I’m a big believer that a lot of hockey can be positionless, but there are exceptions. So, Matt Matt Duchain isn’t free to use his creativity when he’s playing on the wall. He he needs open space on his right and his left. He gravitates where the space is. He buys himself time. He allows other players to get into certain lanes. And when you talk about guys on the wall, like Sam Steel, to me, the the word that comes to mind is you have to have a certain tenacity when you play on the wall. You have to be the kind of guy that says, “I’m not going to get pinned on the wall and I’m going to continue move my feet. You’re not going to pin me on the wall.” And and I think that’s where a guy like Sam Seal that you’re talking about, he can work the walls and he’s he’s not going to just accept somebody’s going to pin and seal me, you know, and again, and I’m not saying anybody does, but but just back to Matt Duchain, he just he has to be able to roam. That that’s what he does is he creates things for for his his wingers because he can use the the middle of the ice. He likes the middle of the ice because there’s more space there. You get on the wall, you’re limited to what you can do and and all those other kind of things. And Matt Matt plays left and right. He’s an east west guy. You put him on the wall, especially on the left side, according to my compass, he’s only got east left. You know what I mean? Yep. So, east left. Yeah. Yeah. One thing I wanted to bring up before we switch gears to our Olympic discussions today is Joe Pavvelski will be officially inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame tonight in a ceremony up in Minnesota. And I actually need to give Sean credit for this because I wasn’t really thinking about it, but it’s a really fun coincidence that the Dallas Stars happen to have an off night on the road in St. Paul ahead of their game against Minnesota tomorrow night. And I would bet that a fair chunk, if not the entire team is going to attend the ceremony if they are allowed to. Where is it? Why wouldn’t they be allowed to the way that now? This isn’t this isn’t Nashville last year and going to Vegas for no concerts. And they it’s it’s the it’s the US hockey elephant. They check passports before entering. So it’s But wouldn’t it be something if they all get to attend it and then they go on a fivegame skid? Yeah. They’re going to point it all. Oh, you got to throw that out there. John, where is it? What building is it in? It’s in St. The the Enshrinement ceremony is in St. Paul tonight. So it’s I don’t It’s probably within walking distance of That’s cool. the the the Stars Hotel and everything like that. So, um it’s uh I I hope some like it’s I don’t know if the whole team will go, but obviously there’s a couple especially some young guys on this on this Stars team that owe a lot to Joe and what he did well late in his career there that I think there’s uh I don’t know, this feels like one of those those things where whether it’s Jamie or it’s probably Jake who’s the organizer on this since we all know he’s the the party planner where somebody in that leadership group takes the like takes the lead on this and says, “Hey, you know what, guys? We’re all going to go do this tonight and just get everybody there.” Not not that not that anyone would push back against it, but it just takes one person to kind of to to kind of lead the effort, I think. Oh, well, I think Brad Albertson, Jim Nil have been knocking on Joe’s door for a couple years now to get him to come back. Maybe they’re the ones that are drumming everything up. Hey, let’s go support Joe tonight, you know, make sure. I would think they all would be, wouldn’t they? Yeah, I I would think that like the only difference is, you know, Gully wasn’t the coach here two seasons ago when Joe was last year with the Stars. Other than that, if anybody understands a teammate, you know what I mean? And and again, this is not the the Dallas Stars players from the ‘9s where you have to be concerned about if we go to this event, we may not find them till the next morning. That that’s not what the issue is with this group of guys. Yeah. Like straight from the horse’s mouth. I love it. Well, congrats to Joe Povvelski. We are going to do our best to try to get some uh audio video of that. If we can, we will have a show next week where we can clip it up and share it with everybody. But uh hopefully he really enjoys it because he’s his career impressively gets celebrated as as it should be. Uh let’s talk about the Olympics next. We have a lot. Liam Bishell and the feud with the Swiss Hockey Federation. Does size really matter? Thank you, Sam. And yes, jerseys. We’ll get to all that here on the back half of the DLS Stars podcast. Nobody does it better to the Olympics because it’s rapidly approaching. We have less than a month now until the rosters have to be announced and then they will play this 12 team hockey tournament at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. We assume. Let’s start with ice rink size. Does it matter? Yes and no. I heard rumors it’s not full NHL size. You are correct. As a matter of fact, I’ve been hearing that Bill Daly, the deputy commissioner of the NHL, does not listen to the DLLS Stars podcast on the regular. Neither does Pete Dbor. Because had they done done that, they would have heard Doug Armstrong, the GM of Team Canada, and the St. Louis Blues, personal friends of our own Craig Lewig, tell us this back in September. Service is it it started out supposed to be NHL size. Uh, now it’s actually going to be smaller. So, we’re going to have to go letty back to the old uh video of the odd and find out or Boston the old garden. Yeah. How you playing a shoe box? How much smaller is it going to be, Doug? I think I’ve heard five feet shorter. Uh I don’t know. I don’t know if it’s coming out of the neutral. Yes, I’ve heard that. Again, I don’t know if they’re running out of material or time to build the whole thing, but it’s not it’s not quite finished. But but I don’t know if is it going to like we don’t know what zone it’s going to come out of. Is it the neutral zones? Is it going to come out uh from the blue lines in is it equally uh divided? So there’s things that we’re still picking up. But I think when you go into something like this, you realize that everyone is on the same footing and and it is what it is and we’ll have to find a way to adapt to it. And I think my experience on anything international is if you’re willing to adapt and and understand that things aren’t going to go right, you have a better chance for success. And that’s what we’re going to do with the ice surface. But as far as building a team to beat one team, uh that that that’s not going to be our approach. What was the date of that show? September 5th. So, isn’t it curious how that was September 5th and this whole thing started and it came out like three weeks ago? Like I I don’t understand how these from like top of the top of the line. This is the GM or whatever you call it of the team. I don’t understand how this all just started to come out. No. And I give full credit to a lot of NHL.com writers and people going back and looking at I think I tweeted it and and our video and saying these guys from DLS knew this in September. I don’t know how people didn’t know it. So well actually they didn’t say DLS. They they said they couldn’t remember my name. They remember my name but not our name. Not our outlet. But uh it’s just crazy to think that the I mean Pete Dbor said he just found out you know whatever that was two weeks ago. Bill Daily didn’t know. It’s the whole situation is bizarre because Bill Daly’s comments were what, a week ago, Sean? Yeah. Well, it’s Let’s Let’s also be real quick. Pete, if Pete listened to our show, he would have known that I was planning to fire him after the last game at the start. Pete listened to our show, that would have happened. Um, he would have been ready for that. He wouldn’t have been surprised. Um, the wild thing about all of this to me is the consistent push back that we’ve seen from everyone defending that no one knew about this, right? Like it was Bill Daly said, “Oh, he didn’t know.” Like a week ago, Bill Daly said he didn’t know. He didn’t know he just learned the prior week. And um like and Pete Dbor goes over like this all all of this comes out of from Pete Dbor’s visit over there, right? like Pete. Pete go because Pete’s going to Italy as the assistant coach who doesn’t have an NHL job right now, but is uh happens to be talking to the media a lot more and starting that media circle up, which is this is how people start to push for jobs. So, we know a week ago, everybody thought he was going to be the LA Kings head coach. Yeah, that’s let’s not pick a source on that one. Kings actually had to go out and say Jim Hiller’s still our head coach, guys. I know. And I also have to give uh it’s never fun when your own when you know the person who made the mistake on the report. So I feel bad for someone else here. Um but the uh it’s not me. Um the it’s like but it’s I I can’t help here. Here’s all I want from Pete and because he won’t come obviously doesn’t listen to the show. He won’t so he won’t accept the invite onto this show. Maybe he will. I want to know if Pete walked into the building and I just wanted I just can’t get the visual out of my head of Pete with a tape measure of just Pete being in the building in Italy and Pete going measuring it and then all of a sudden like ah ah and then deciding to come back to the United States or North America knowing Pete he walked into that building and went oh this is nice the ring’s too small like immediately just that looks too small let me go measure that but what’s crazy about all this is I think they said it’s about 3 feet. So, Bill, uh, Doug Armstrong said it was about five. I think it’s about three. The crazy part is the 3T 1.8 in. There you go. So, the NH the IOC, all that stuff, they defended it by saying it’s not going to have any effect on the game. So, my question, why isn’t it accurate then? It’s not about if it’s going to affect the game and it’s going to change it. This is the Olympics. This isn’t me and Luds putting together a U12 tournament that we want to put on some ice sheet somewhere. This is the Olympics that the NHL has not been a part of in forever. Why is it not done so perfectly, so accurately and so early that we have none of these worries and the NHL has the OC before? It just blows my mind that like they wanted this so bad. They want the NHL players to come back and they’ve blown it every step of the way. The concern though isn’t really with the size of the ring. It’s about the finish date because or Italian date, whatever you want to call it. But but it’s about the date because it’s about the quality of the ice and because the women are going to play there. I believe it’s on the 12th. I think they’re the first ones to get on the ice. Sean, do you know exact date? I I I want to say the ring’s supposed to be done on the 5th. Women are playing first on the 12th. Then the men are playing like 24, 36 hour, whatever it is after. And they’re saying if the quality of the ice isn’t good, they’re leaving. That the the problem is is the ice conditions. I mean, not the problem. That’s their main concern. That’s their main concern, which is fair. They can adapt. Like Army, I think Army used the word adapt. The three feet. And Sean, do you know, are they going to take it out of the middle of the ice? Are they going to take it out from behind the net? Are they going to just take little pieces? Because I three feet it doesn’t seem like a lot, but to some players it will because, you know, things happen a little bit quicker. And then comes in the other debate and and I’m sure that they’re considering some of this stuff. Do you use smaller players, quicker Connor Baddard kind of players, or is it more for a Tom Wilson kind of guy where you just plow your way through? I I don’t know. I mean, that’s that’s their decision, but that that’s where the the biggest issues are. I mean, it’s I from my understanding of what’s been out there, and I don’t know this for sure, just the way it was kind of laid out to me a little bit more recently in past couple days, was the neutral zone gets a little bit smaller. They’re not they’re not t they’re trying not to take it out of the the the offensive zones um on either end obviously. So it comes from the neutral zone there. I mean there’s also January 9th there’s a test event there. There’s there’s going to be the uh Italian the Italian cup is going to be there which is like a um in the hockey schedule in Europe tends to be can be very reflective of the soccer schedule at times. So, similar to like it’s an inseason, it’s an in-season tournament thing that the championship of that is going to be at that venue on January 9th, I believe. And um so obviously it has to be the ice. I mean, I don’t know if the stands I’m assuming I’m assuming that it has to be done for then. Um, the thing that I one of my bigger takeaways on all of this was I saw the um I know a lot of players have done a have intentionally been tight lipped about it because they’re hockey players and they try to like I’m focused on my team and everything like that, but saw a clip the other day from that new Matthew Kachchuck Brady Kachchuck podcast where they’re talking about this and either it was either Matthew or Brady, can’t remember which, but they’re talking about and one of them’s like if they just put it in put the rink in the Atlantic Ocean, we’re still going. There’s no way I’m not playing in this, right? Yeah. And so I look at it from this perspective where I’m trying to figure out where this kind of what is the problem here? And that that’s where I want to go on this, right? Because like you’re going to tell me there’s a realistic world where Sydney Crosby is going to miss his final Olympics over ice conditions. I I I I don’t I just I I I can’t believe that, right? I just I have I have no reason I can possibly believe that. And so all of this just where is where is this in the where is it almost sounds Sean like there’s like a hidden agenda behind all this. I I I don’t I don’t even know if it’s a hidden agenda. It’s just the league has never been a fan of the Olympics. The league has always it’s why they didn’t go for the past couple Olympics. The league has always the league and its owners have always said we’re not going to make money off the Olympics. you don’t actually see the return on it. It’s why the league wants to turn the World Cup of hockey into a into a more sustainable event to basically because they actually make money off of that. And so all of this kind of it just I I don’t want to piss people off, but I’m going to piss people off right now. A lot of this right now, a lot of this right now is just the league is the league fought so hard not to get to the players to go to the Olympics. And if you fight so hard for something and you lost that battle, okay, you lost that battle, you’re going to find ways to nitpick and do that all the way to the end. It’s just it’s I mean, the amount of time like I I heard Bill Daly speak in person. It was on November 5th or 6th. I was at a sports business conference up in Toronto. I heard Bill Dailyy speak and he was being interviewed by uh he was being interviewed by uh uh by Brian Burke and Brian Burke literally is asking about the Olympics and everything like that. And and Brian Burke, like even in the joke to this like sports business conference, Burke, he says to him, it’s like he’s like, “Oh, players going to the Olympics this year if they get a venue, right?” Like it’s and they’re and they’re laughing about it, right? Like it’s the like it’s pretty clear to me that this is like the league didn’t get what they wanted. The league and the league’s not making any money on it. They got to take a twoe break. Their schedule’s more condensed. More injuries are happening. I mean, it’s like Well, the reason they’re going, Sean, the bottom line is the reason that they’re going is because in the last collective bargaining thing, the player adamantly adamantly said, “We want the Olympics.” So, and and like the Kachchuck said, they’re not missing this. They’re going to go and play. And then the the biggest concern is ultimately going to be the general managers going, “Well, let’s just hope the ice is in quality.” The GMs and the owners worried about their investment. Yeah. And I’ve even heard some people saying, I don’t know if it was serious or not, but I’ve heard a few people saying like we might just go over to a neighboring country and go play over there, you know, like find any way possible, even if it’s not in Italy. The problem with that they said would be accommodations because they literally have no place to stay. Olympic Village and all that. Yeah. So, I think it’s going to get figured out. I think of all the complaining, we have one super chat to go to before our ad break. But as Sean is saying, ultimately what the players want is to play in the Olympics and they’re going to find every reason to play, not look for excuses not to play. All right, here’s the super chat. It’s a Hatcher and Year after the Cup from Bird Oils. If it’s too small, just make it bigger. I mean, that’s how construction works. That’s what she said. Up next, let’s talk about Liam Bishell and his drama with Swiss hockey. And if we have time, jerseys. If not, they get punted again. Get punted to our next show podcast. Well, we’ve got to We’re going to start with the Face Off collection because I know there’s some people that haven’t heard about this yet. These are new. I heard. Yeah. So, we did get a I did get a shirt. Oh, you got a shirt? Yeah, I got a green one. We all get a green one. We all get a green one. Apparently, we’re getting a black one. Ryan got the black one. But looks great on him. Let’s go look at the hats because I have a pet peeve here. Okay, they’re beautiful hats. I have four of these hats sitting in a basket right now that Sam can’t figure out how the hell to get my discount code to work. So, if anybody at headquarters right now, I’ll order mine. No, I’m trying not to pay full price like all the rest of you guys. So, anyways, they’re they’re great hats. I’m trying to get four of them right now. I know my kids would be pissed off if I didn’t get them one. They’re sitting in a basket, you guys. But Sam cannot figure out. You don’t know your password for your email. That’s reset. That’s where it starts. You’re the one that set it up to start with. So anyway, there’s our there’s our hats and our faceoff collections that I can’t get. Sean, not me this time. I thought I was supposed to read about hats. According to the notes, I was supposed to do hats, but I guess I’m just going to talk about being a die hard. Believe it says hats and die hard. You can also weigh in on the hats. I mean, I don’t I don’t have a hat. If I if I have a hat arrive here, I will wear it and then we will give the hat lots of facetime on the show if if a hat arrives here. So, put that public service announcement on that. Um, but let’s talk about being a die hard. Somebody’s gonna have to get off their wallet for Sean and buy him a hat because he’s not going. As you go right here, if you click this QR code that I’m pointing at, you can become a diehard. And I think one of the coolest things about becoming a diehard and I want to give credit to Sam on something right here. There is a kick-ass story from Sam on Matt Duchain. this week where exclusive work from um I we use the word exclusive. I thought he was going to make fun of me. No, we use the word exclusive. We use the word exclusive way too often in this business just because people think like oh I did something fun and it was cool. No, but this was actually good work by Sam. This is the type of thing that people should be talking about. Got a story from Matt Duchain that no one else got shared it both in the written form which you got to read if you were die hard. Obviously talked about it on the show and when you become a diehard you support work like that. And I think that’s one of the coolest things um when when you think about when you’re supporting this whole endeavor and we talk a lot about the community, we talk about the fun shirts, we talk about the bits, we talk about all that, but I think the fact that when you support DLS and what we’re doing here and everything like that, it goes into helping make you a more informed fan, helping us track down the stories you want to hear. And that’s what Sam went and did for you this week for the Die Hard. And I think that’s such a cool thing. And if you want to support that, if you want to read that piece, become a diehard. It’s such an awesome It’s such an awesome program. You get to be part of that community I talk about all the time. But I think I really want to just shout that out right now because that was awesome work. Sean’s complimenting me. I’m not going to tell him to wrap it up. Just just more of that. Keep it going. All right, Sean. Thanks, Sean. We had a super chat last night from one of our viewers asking about Lean Bishell and the Swiss Hockey Federation and the beef that they have had now for a couple of years. Yeah, this is the the Olympics is sort of the the last of this embargo that the Federation in Switzerland has imposed on Liam Bishell. And we I’ve read about it, but it’s been a while and I was a little fuzzy. So, I said, “You know what? Sean’s gonna be on tomorrow. let’s bring it up with him and because they they made a statement this week which seemed unnecessary because they’ve already made that statement but they did anyway. We’ll show that in a minute. But can you give some of our viewers the that maybe don’t know the backstory of why this came to this situation? Yeah, it’s um so the biggest kind of crux of this whole thing goes back to the 20 it’s the 2020 uh 2023 2024 World Juniors, right? So technically the 2024 World Juniors. Um it’s the year that Lean started the year with the Texas Stars. Um activated his uh European assignment clause to go play with Rogula. um and then actually ended up finishing the season back with Texas and was a black ace with Dallas after Texas this season ended. And if um um and he would have and and Leon would have stepped into the NHL lineup if not if um what’s his face now playing for Toronto. Why am I drawing a complete blank on his name? Defenseman who they traded for from Calgary. Why am I forgetting his name right now? Um I’m talking about Chris Russ. No, no. Two years ago, literally defenseman if Yeah, he would if Tanv was unavailable to go, Bishell was about to step into the lineup two years ago. Yep. That’s the season we’re talking about. So during that season um when Bishell went left Texas to go back to Sweden to play for Rogula, he made the decision to turn down an invite to play for Switzerland at the under 20 World Championships, World Junior Championships, which fittingly start in about 16 days from now here. I’ve got a flight to Minnesota on December 26th actually for that. And um so when Lean turned that down, it was kind of the straw that broke the camel’s back for Hockey Switzerland after there’s been other things that Lean has not gone to before, other camps because of injury and stuff like that. And because he didn’t go, Hockey Switzerland basically came down with the ruling of, okay, you can’t be selected for our national team, our senior national team for at least two years because of this. And it was a and it was something when it happened I didn’t know if it was I was honestly fascinated by this because Switzerland’s depth as a country on the defense corps it’s not like there’s going to be six other Swiss NHL defenseman on that. Yeah. There’s only four, right? So there’s only like Yeah, there’s it’s not like they have other NHL defenseman to be like, “Oh, we have a multitude of this.” Right. And so I I was wondering how hard this stance was going to be on on making an example of how we follow the rules and everything like that. And so basically Hockey Switzerland and yeah, we can make a joke about them not being neutral on this got aggressive and said, “You know what? You’re not going to take our invite to under 20. You think you you think you know better than us and you think that you’re gonna do something that doesn’t fit with our plan. Okay, you don’t fit in our plan for the Olympics.” And Lean has known this. Um, I remember speaking to Liam at uh at Traverse City a couple years back about this and how he’s done thing his own way and and he doesn’t really he’s willing to he’s willing to own his own decisions. So, I don’t think there’s there’s no um concerns there. I mean, but the statement was fascinating that last week that came out, Owen, because it’s not just hockey Switzerland going and uh saying, “Hey, we’re defending our decision.” even though it was weird because they’re like, “There’s been some untruths or there’s been some false information about there. We’re going to clear it up.” And then they cleared up absolutely nothing in in the statement. Um maybe maybe the statement maybe if I was able to read it in I I read it obviously translated English. Maybe there’s more meaning in words in another language. I don’t know. But then on top of that, it’s co-signed by a collection of It’s got Nikicoish signature on there. It’s got Roman Yoshi’s signature on there. It’s got essentially their leadership group. Yeah. their leadership committee basically saying, you know what, Hockey Switzerland, as the leadership group for Hockey Switzerland, we sign off on this decision. It’s um it’s a fascinating thing for me to kind of look at and and see about the the long-term push on this of like you’re telling me that I I know there’s uh they’re not they’re definitely not fielding their best possible Swiss lineup this year because they’re not letting him play. four years from now as as we keep going throughout Leon Bishell’s career, how is I I just I I I’m fascinated to watch the long-term evolution of the back and forth between Swiss hockey and Leon on this because how long do you how long do do you do you take this? How far do you put this? It’s um but yeah, that that’s kind of the story in a nutshell and I’d love to be able to get some more on it and I’d love to be able to get a crystal ball to see where this all goes too. Yeah, the one thing I just saw just to add real quick is that uh I think Patrick Fischer, I believe that’s the coach uh for Switzerland’s team, he said that he used the word cherry pickers with what Sean was saying. If you’re not going to say yes to our U20 or our world juniors, we’re going to make the precedent that you don’t just get to pick and choose. You don’t just say, “I want to play the Olympics or World Cup of hockey. You need to play the tournaments when we need you to.” And I thought that was a really important part of that whole thing. Well, the actual statement they sent that Sean was talking about, we have that in English. And this is from the president of the Swiss ISA hockey federation uh Ers Kesler. We have proactively addressed the situation surrounding Lean Bishell on several occasions and proposed solutions. That is a very interesting statement. By the way, address it and propose solutions. Obviously, there’s an under, you know, sort of undercurrent of he didn’t agree to your proposals, but the current policy has broad support within the Federation leadership, the sports management, the national team committee, and the captain’s team, including our NHL players, and we all stand by it. The rules apply equally to all players and form the basis for our cooperation and the success of the national team. They provide us with calm, clarity, and continuity. I’m so glad that they’re calm and we are convinced they are Swiss after all that we will continue to benefit from them. We want a team that plays for Switzerland with commitment, pride, and great passion as all Swiss national players impressively demonstrate. Well, then Lud sent me a clarification this morning. Sent us. And it says, “The Swiss ice hockey federation clarifies that the management of the situation is based on clearly defined principles which apply equally to all players. The SIHF, Swiss ice hockey federation, consciously refrains from publicly commenting on internal processes and discussions with the parties involved. And then they go to reclaim what we just posted. And then they mention Roman Yosi, Nikicohishir, Andrea Glauser, Ninoitriter, and Leonardo Janoni, the captain’s team, saying that they support all this and that they will no longer make any statements. It’s interesting that they felt the need to clarify this because their first statement they didn’t feel they they got off on the right foot. So I I I also would like to you texted that to us. This one remember that picture. Oh, I didn’t read it. Well, well I only reason I sent it is because you guys didn’t know how to get it into English or something like that and I I hit a button in their English. Okay. Frankly, I’ve been thinking about drills I got to do at U8 practice the last 12 minutes. So I have no clue. We’re doing fine. Yeah. Uh, I I sent the link to you guys and then LSDs basically put it into the group chat because Sam was unable to get the the English translation of it. I was joking. I was joking. Um, I did see I want to give uh Robert Tiffen some credit. He wrote an article about this. I don’t know the date on here, but um there he got some quotes from I believe it’s called Blick. Um I’m trying to figure exactly what it was, but it’s from from some interview on there. Go to Stars Thoughts. Robert wrote about it, but it has some comments from Bishop being asked about that. Um, and he said, this is translated, so it’s again, it’s kind of rough, but it’s difficult. He’s declined. I’ve heard him say in person a couple times this year that he’s declined. I have no comment on that. Yeah, he said it’s difficult to accept. I’m proud to play for my country, which I’ve done many times in the past. I’ll be delighted to be called up to the national team again in due course. As I’ve said before, Switzerland is my home and it’s been fantastic training here this summer. But he also went on to say uh they basically asked if it’s if you miss the Olympics and the world championships it’s not going to be how how significant will that be and he said it will be significant but I’ve always felt something if I can’t change something I’ll do it in the best way that cost me the least amount of energy. Uh he talked about his his ankle and his injury his rehab were very intensive and that was a part of what allowed him to focus on himself and the NHL season ahead versus anything else. So, he’s defending it in a sense of he wants to play and also we, as I think Sean mentioned before, he had that injury and that was a big part of it, but it was not the first thing. And Bishell has had plenty of times where he’s rubbed people the wrong way that probably didn’t help him in this situation either. I I think there’s I I think one of the things that’s odd for hockey Switzerland and then other um this goes hard against the the ethos that comes with international play for these countries, right? Like I think there’s such a there’s almost too much of an expectation sometimes, right? like like for example um the German team right this year going into the Olympics like Leon Dryidle that that German team is going to be one of the best German teams we’ve ever seen assembled right like it’s between Tim Stutzel Mort Leon Dryidle they actually have an NHL goalie even though I don’t really consider what Philip Grubau is doing right now as particularly good but like the German team but like that team is has a those NHL players that kind of carry the banner for their country in the NHL they get so much both pride and then further um expectation of it, right? Like there’s like like there’s more pressure from an individual success standpoint on a Leon Dryidle than there is on a Conor McDavid in Canada, right? Like Conor McDavid Canada can win and Conor McDavid cannot be good. Leon Dryidle has to be great. Anyh who, where all of this goes is Leen is going against the grain on this and he’s putting his career first and that’s one of those things that you can’t really hold against him. And I give him a ton of credit for owning all of it. I I’m going to get us out of here now. He has owned it all. He has never been shy about saying it’s his decision. And he has not let he has he hasn’t been the one putting out statements like this. He is he is being the he made his decision. He’s living with it. He’s being the bigger man about it. And I give him credit for that. So, I think we’re good. And and again, we we’re done. We’re out of time, so we can’t continue the conversation. But a question to ponder is why is the Swiss Hockey Federation releasing a statement and then clarifying where’s the push back come? Is it from their own fans? Because is it I mean it’s you said Bishial’s not making any public comments about it at all. So that wonders why did they feel the need to do it? Where is that pressure coming from? And I think that’s a good way for us to leave it today. We’ll get to talking about Olympic jerseys maybe on our next daily pot as Sam said in about eight weeks or so. But we have Craig Lewig, we have Sam Nestler, Sean Shapiro, our producer Ryan Fers. I’m Owen Nukeer. Thanks for sticking with us through the little technical blips at the start of the show, but we made it through. And stars in Minnesota Wild tomorrow night pregame show 6:30, game at 7. We will have the pre and post for you right here on DLLS. Bang. [Music] [Applause] We all like the mayor.

The Dallas Stars are a freight train right now, barreling down the tracks of a congested schedule. The Stars have won four in a row, they have an 11-game point streak (9-0-2) and have points in 23 of their last 25 games (18-2-5. 41 pts., 0.820). Their power play has been nearly unstoppable, their big guns have been firing at all cylinders and their goaltending tandem has been elite. Frankly, there are not many issues at the moment, so weāre going to have to really drill down to uncover a very minor concern regarding Matt Ducheneās continued recovery and where he best fits in the lineup, especially in the absence of Tyler Seguin, who is out with a long-term knee injury. Then we will switch gears to talk of the 2026 Winter Olympic hockey tournament. We will talk about the issue about the size of the rink in Italy, which was first reported on our show by Hockey Canada general manager Doug Armstrong. We will discuss Lian Bichselās on-going drama with the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation.

Steel gets at least one breakaway per game…if he could figure out how to put half of them into the net he could put this team into an unbeatable juggernaut
Matt centering Mavrik and Ritzy
You want Wyatt to play 3rd line center?
I believe Luds has mentioned Wyatt can play anywhere. Why not move Wyatt to wing and have Duchene centering Wyatt and Rantanen
Steel usually gets those breakaways while killing penalties ā¦ā¦ which has been unreal , cut him some slack .
If Pete showed up, Sean would have an actual conniption fit, then pass out š
