Do The Red Wings Have Interest In Quinn Hughes | The Valenti Show with Rico
Low key, this kind of slaps, guys. Rico’s never heard it. He looked at me. I told you we had a song for years. So, I asked David during the break. I go, “Dude, check the system. Is that thing still in there?” I never heard this. It’s magical. Here’s how I know this song was good, Kenny. No drops. Nothing from this man. He just sat here. The whole song is a drop. He can be the temp. He hits drops. Anybody? He hits a drop. Drops. What do you need drops for? That that is you. That is It’s like a a musical drop. Eat ribs with this band. I’m glad you finally got to enjoy that. All right, let me I want to ask you a question. That’s not I’m just going home. I don’t want to I don’t want to ruin the rest of this show. No, it’s tremendous. We can bounce back with that in the five. back with this un no more Christmas music just this okay till December every break dad giveaway now I have a question with Kenny back from vacation I want to play a piece of audio and and I understand this is not anything that is absolutely going to happen I’m just telling you it’s something that if if there’s a 1% shot of it that I would go all in on this type of move I want to play Elliott Freriedman. Just a quick piece of audio from the 32 Thoughts podcast hockey. He brings up a name, a name that if there were a a player that that that the heavens designed that the Red Wings needed that that you could form arguably the best defensive pairing in hockey over the next conservatively 6 to8 years. that happens to be left-handed. Mhm. That happens to be more offensiveminded while most siders more defensiveminded. And together they would form Voltron. Okay. Okay. Uh whose parents like the state of Michigan and vacation here in the summers and might be getting dealt because the team he’s on is garbage juice. Not the garbage. It’s the liquid that resides below the garbage in the bag. I want to play this for you about what Elliot Friedman had to say here and then I do I sincerely want Kenny’s take on whether I should even bother remotely having hopes here. Play the audio. And he’s speaking of Kenny Quinn. You know who? Jack Hughes brother. That’s correct. Defenseman. Quinn Hughes is 26. Quinn Hughes is an elite defenseman now. He is due a contract this summer. He cannot extend until this summer. It makes it tricky, but it’s tricky for Vancouver, too, because I don’t think he’s signing up for much more of this. Now, the issue is he is referred to Jerseyy’s general manager by his nickname, Fitzy. His brother plays there. But I I am not going to sit here and say, “Well, that’s it. I guess we can’t make a run at it.” Quinn Hughes paired with Mo Cider, you would have the best defensive pairing in hockey under the age of 30 and you would have Excuse me. What? Kenny, what were you saying? I think you could have just stopped there. You didn’t say the under 30. I I like to offer the opportunity for people to to to attack the opinion, but fine. Look, it’s just what is the Red Wings biggest weakness? The blue line. I I can’t fix the goalending tomorrow. We’re stuck with John Gibson until or unless Kosa is ready to save us. But we can improve what’s in front of him. We can improve the quality of chances or lack thereof that said goalender faces. Hughes would allow Cider to be more of what he’s good at. You would get a puck mover. You would get someone who absolutely seamlessly moves the puck all over the ice out of the zone into the offensive zone. Look, Kenny, I understand this isn’t, “Hey, it’s happening.” But if there were ever a move you’d be willing to damn near clean out your minor league system for, wouldn’t it be Quinn Hughes? Yeah. And so, there’s kind of a good news, bad news element of this here. Let’s get the bad first. Rip the band-aid off. The bad news is we’ve been begging Steve Eisermanman, even when there has been rumors or not been rumors about this type of move being made, we’ve been begging him to do that. He has yet to show us he’s willing to. Okay. What’s the good news? The good news is that if you want to sell hope for this trade possibly happening, and yes, I love this trade. This would be glorious. Also, the bad news, part of the bad news is you’re probably losing a a Nate Danielson type of player, which is fine. Who effing cares? I I’m just I’m give it because you’ve got about a 5% shot that Danielson ever becomes the caliber of player that Quinn Hughes is today. Hey, it’s the mystery box uh theory, but like most people in this town are fine with pushing it back a couple of more years for the young guys. I know I I don’t agree with it either, but that’s fine with me that if that’s in the bad news camp, we can get rid of that. The good news is Elliot Freriedman is to those non-hockey people out there that don’t know who he is, he’s one of the most authoritative, you know, reporters of hockey. He knows exactly what he’s talking about. He’s not going to come out and say that the Wings have not have been in contact with Vancouver for this trade. So there’s been rumblings of this for a very long time now it seems like. So this is in the realm of possibility and that what have we always said about these teams during trade deadline eras is put me in the report. Show me that somebody made an offer. Right. So this is Freriedman confirming that this has happened or is in the process. He’s a left-handed, fluid puck moving, offensive minded defenseman. That would be him and Cider would be poetry. He would he would allow Cider to stay more at home and not have to assume all of the responsibilities both offensively and defensive. Look at what it does for your second pairing. You never need to ask Sandine Pelico to be a first pairing guy. Him and Evansson can just develop together, right? Like look, I just when I heard this, I I go, “Okay, why can’t it? Isn’t this why we hired Eiserman? I it it can’t just be, well, his you know, Jack primarily plays for the Devils and he likes the GM. Make a better offer. Vancouver’s got a business to run.” Now, if if Quinn Hughes is given indications, I refuse to play for the Detroit Red Wings, well, that would be a different thing. But again, according to things you read and hear and see, uh Jim and Ellen aka Mr. and Mrs. Hughes spend summers in Michigan, vacation in Michigan. They like the Wouldn’t wouldn’t mind seeing their kid play in Michigan. So, I just listen, I can’t force this to happen. I’ll just tell you I if it if it develops, I don’t want to take a single phone call about I don’t want to give them prospect X. At some point that has to stop. Now the Wings were terrible when Kenny left. Now they’re going for their fourth win in a row, fifth win in a row tonight in Calgary. So they’re back. You’re right. I should go on vacation again. You’re right. I’ll leave again. They win more. The point is, wouldn’t this be the allin? Also, why do Canadians mispronounce the name of our city so much? Why do they they they they like pull it back. They always do this Detroit. Like they they they annunciate the I. What is that? It’s a French word. Detroit. Detroit. Detroit. Canadian. Detroit doesn’t rhyme with toilet. Elliot. It’s a French word. Canadian. No, that would be dto. It is Detroit. That reminds me of old ‘9s hockey footage. And it’s the Detroit Red Wings versus the Colorado. Like you’re watching some French Kebeekqua news report. Detroit. It’s not Detroit. It’s Detroit. There aren’t two T’s into an E at it. No, it’s the organization’s problem. That’s that’s another one of the Canadianisms. It’s the same crap the British do. Vitamins. They’re vitamins. You bleoles. Aluminum. It’s aluminum. Cut it out. I kind of like aluminium. It makes it sound higher class. It’s not. It’s aluminum foil. It’s upgraded. We’ll get to the We’ll get Detroit. Detroit. Maybe we should get him to talk to Charles Ramsey. Quinn Hughes. We’re all in. Yes. All in. Absolutely. And I don’t want to hear about sacrifice in the future anymore. And what will it cost, Kenny? Everything. It’ll probably cost you a Nate Danielson type, maybe some draft capital. Why is hockey so stupid? He’s not eligible for the extension until summer. And then I can’t give him the the extension now if he gets traded. See, how does that work? What do you do? put on friendship rings. It’s not a real league, Mike. I’ve been trying to tell you this this whole time. But think about it. What are they supposed to do? Pinky swear? Like, I’m going to trade for you and you promise to resign. Check. Yes. Like, it’s so it’s a folly. You’re killing Vancouver’s ability to get the best for the guy and you’re killing Detroit to be able to get the security to make it right, Mike. Detroit, that’s better. God, I hate it. Canadians always do that. What’s wrong with you people? 2485399797
Is this a move you want the Red Wings to pursue?

What is Mich doing!?
I love Quinn Hughes as a player but he’s only under contract through next year. Stevie isn’t going to send a huge trade package unless the trade is made with the understanding Hughes is going to sign an extension. I understand the fans wanting it to get it done no matter the cost. We’ve been patient, but I think we’ll be forced to continue to be patient on this one. NHL movement is arguably the hardest in all sports
Just don't trade Simon Edvinsson
No way. It would be a stupid trade for the wings, they need a big D man to clear out the front of the net. They need to trade for a good stout 5 or 6 D man.
Insiders are saying Hughes is going to play with his brother when his contract is up.
viewers should hear the audio clips…..jus sayin
I believe we do damn near whatever to make this trade happen. Hughes will be a top 3 USA defenseman all time when his career is over. He would be a perfect top pair with Seider, we have the money to sign him and we have the prospects to deal for him. If we can get a reasonable trade we should do it. This guy is entering his prime and he is the real deal. Not one of our prospects will be better than him, at best they'd be as good because Quinn is an all timer.
"Do The Red Wings Have Interest In Quinn Hughes?": yes
It would take ASP going back. Thought they would know this
The problem is they need centers, They are going to want Kasper, Danielson AND probably ASP. Centers dont grown on trees either so yes, it would improve the D a lot, but now you have a big giant gaping hole at center now and in the future. Thats way too much and it would hurt the team giving all three away in a major way. Now if were talking one of those players and a tonne of 1st round picks absolutely, but thats not what Vancouver wants. Best is to wait until offseason or let him get to FA if possible. Otherwise you run the risk of giving away all those players and no guarantee hughes extends and it would be all for a rental.
SELL FREAKING EVERYTHING!! Get Hughes here!
First Hughes is signed until 2027 season… Next he won't re-sign with the Wings if he comes here… He wants to play in New Jersey… Next it will take a prospect or two.. an NHL player and 1 maybe 2 first round draft picks… Just to get him from Vancouver this year…. Hughes isn't coming here and you're going to have to trade a ton for him…
Not likely…. Vancouver is going to want a king's ransom for a player that will be hitting free agency in 2027. Our window will be open by then but our odds will still be thin.
They'll want ASP and in my opinion ASP is the better player for our team.
talk pistons
This isn’t happening. If Hughes was a culture-impacting type of player, maybe… but he’s not. Don’t get me wrong, he’s insanely talented, but it would require our entire future. It’s not happening. We could also make the playoffs without him this year regardless. The team, while abysmal at times (in net), has shown some serious sparks of greatness, and what holes we do have, Hughes doesn’t plug. Assuming NHL players still end up going to the Olympics, post-break performance is going to dictate what will happen.
Steve Yzerman is always crying about these types of players that don't want to come to Detroit, welp Yzerman you have your chance now to grab one of these elite players! Not only does Yzerman need to make this happen but also to take some pressure off Seider and the 28 minutes a night that he plays! Let's see if Yzerman backs up his talk about what he said this off-season about trying to acquire elite players through trades and that being Detroit's only option by trades because these free agents won't even take his calls to try and sign players like this in free agency.. 😂😅
Kenny as the hockey guy needs to get his facts right. One both of his brothers play for Jersey. Two he cannot resign because he is under contract for another year and a half. You guys are making it out to be if we trade for him, he will resign with the wings when the time comes which is nowhere near certain. A trade would probably take Kasper, ASP, a top prospect and a first. If he signs that's great, if he doesn't the team takes another big step back after losing ASP and Kasper. That's the gamble Stevie will have to make.
Put a package together were Mo is the main piece( he is overrated by Mo fans) and trade for a Superstar. Q. Hughes is a legitimate Superstar. Make the trade or they will always be mediocre. You can't have them both so make the trade!
joe dirte'
So Quinn Hughes. Easy a top 5 dman in this leauge and i totally get the loure in just jumping head first onto that train with no other explanation then "well he is a star in this leauge and we could use one"… Well, that's all fine and dandy if the year was 2002 and unlimited salary is allowed so you are able to play HoF guys like Luc Robitaille and Brett Hull on your 4th line lol… But it's not, is it…
So here is my own take; I honestly don't think Detroit should do this trade, not whats reported of the ask atleast, which is a kings ransom. Like i said, i know damn well that Quinn Hughes is a top 5 dman in this leauge and people been wanting to see that "Zadina mistake" corrected… BUT only way that makes any sort of sense would be if Vancouver would acknowledge that Quinn has all the power in the world with being a pending UFA just a year from now and by then would be risking losing him for nothing, but that don't seem to be the case… Asking for 4 first rounders (2 established NHLers with top 10 pedigree, can i interest you in Vancouver native Michael Rasmussen if he "counts" in that?🤣) and then plus, plus… Is kind of insane and I def think Detroit should stay clear of that. I totally get WHY Vancouver is demanding it though, anything less would be a mockery to their own fanbase (who litterly have burnt down their own town when frustration boils over…), i just don't happen to think that WE are justified to basically throw away 4-5 years of draft patience for ONE GUY in the position we are in our own rebuild and FINALLY coming around in our own drafting (we had 9-12 players who where drafted by GMSY playing this season = progress), which always where the plan.
Also, we are currently icing the best d-pair in the leauge in Edvinsson-Seider by advance stats, and what is saying that Hughes-Seider pair is a better fit (which would be greedy at this level since Ed and Mo already are as good as it gets to any team in the NHL), when we already got the best pair in the leauge who both are still super young and only will get better. So you people (i've seen this argument from people saying it with a straight face…) seriously think we should pay Hughes 15-17 mil to play on our 2nd pair?🤔🤦🤦🤦 again, salary cap comes into consideration and surprise, surprise, just going after "names" without thinking ahead how the pieces will actually FIT together, is not the way to build a winning team. You also gattu take into account what type of player Hughes is, do we REALLY "need" him? (yes, i know every team would love to have him, but NEEDING compare to WANTING is two diffrent things).
So what is the major issue on this team?
If it where scoring and weak PP, then Hughes would make all the sense in the world to go hard after, but no. We are actually legit a top 5 team in the leauge in PP production aswell as scoring overall. We don't "NEED" Quinn Hughes when the team is already at an elite level status in those metrics, what we NEED is better defensive dmans and players with size and grit. Does it make sense to give up one of very few guys on this team that have both size and plays physical (Edvinsson) in a deal for something we already have "good enough" on the team? There is something called "to many chefs in the kitchen" and look how well (NOT!) it turnt out for Pittsburgh acquiring Erik Karlsson (yes he is past his prime now but still came from a 100 point season at the time of that trade) when they already had Kris Letang who is more then "good enough" to play the same role, but Pittsburgh got, imo, a bit greedy thinking they wanted go from good/great PP quarterback to great/elite… Thing is paying Erik Karlsson 11,5 mil for a "slight upgrade" just made bigger holes elsewhere and you have to be prioritizing filling other holes in your roster, you don't have the same "luxury" in the salary cap era to "get more scoring" because "why not", when you have a salary structure to follow and being a WINNING team isnt same thing as being great at one thing, and bellow average elsewhere… That will only take you to a 1st round exit which isnt Yzerman's goal here, it's to build a year in year out contender (like he did in Tampa who are STILL reaping the benifits 15+ years later of his drafting from when he started as their GM in the year 2010, he did that with his OWN drafting, not trading them away for "finnished product" that you need to pay hefty right away, which in turn will effectively shorten the lenght of your window…
Do we want him to build "another Tampa" or do we want him to build a team that "just makes the playoffs" with sacrificing the future to just "get in" and furthermore be a "flash in the pan"? Thinking of a team like Vancouver (or Columbus a few years back did the same thing) way of building only gets you 1-3 years of "playoff appearence relevence" but then getting forced into a new "re-tool/rebuild". People act like Quinn Hughes alone will instantly put your team as a cup contender. Ok, so why isnt Vancouver one if that the case? Let Yzerman do his own thing, a team like Vancouver is NOT a good model to follow who basically should have 10 times over by now made a proper teardown rebuild and not just patchjobs á la Ken Holland with constantly trading away their draft picks to get players who only bring them short term value. The Hockey Guy on YT have done a ton of videos about that with him being from Vancouver…
So yeah, this got a lot longer then i thought but i'll try getting to the point… Which is simply that teams rarely are able to outscore their problems long term and everyone knows great defense and DEPTH usually wins you championships. Look no further then the Maple Laughs… Year after year putting all their eggs in the same basket (scoring) but fail to adress their defense. I mean my god, Troy Stetcher (who was a 7th/8th dman with us and a regular waiver wire pickup guy) is basically their 2nd best dman right now… Get the picture?
I just don't think, for US, as in Detroit, it makes THAT much sense agressively going after him when we already are moving in the right direction with all these kids coming up. Look at how ASP outshined Hughes the other night for example (2 assists +3) and he scored again tonight, and he would only be a small part of package they demand… Trading away all your blue chip prospects and young players (like i said, the STARTING PRICE been reported as 4 first rounders or equal) and all those valueble ELC contracts for just ONE player who likely can and will demand Kaprizov money.
These type of overpayment/all in for "the NOW" – moves you make when you think your "one piece away" from winning the CUP! Simular to what we paid to get Shanahan in 97 or Chelios in 99. Last time i checked we are not even close to be that caliber of team, and we wont if we empty our cupboard (both young established NHLers or top prospects soon to be ready) for just ONE player.
I don't think anyone who lives in the reality can with a straight face claim that we are "Quinn Hughes away from bringing home the cup", since we still are in a dogfight to even make it to the playoffs… Hard pass for me! Just my point of view though, everyone is entitled to have their own take… Go Wings!
Vancouver would want ASP in return..
We don't need a one year rental for sure . But still believe no big hard hitting D- man who will dropp the gloves we will not make playoffs.😢
Hughes would make us a contender over night which is why it will never happen. He wants to be in New Jersey with his brothers and Steve doesn’t have what it takes to convince him otherwise.
