Yep…The Colts Might Actually Start Philip Rivers in Week 15 vs the Seahawks | The Rich Eisen Show
I get asked frequently and as a matter of fact I I did get asked this question um I one of the many things that I’ve been doing here in New York other than this or hanging with you and getting in a food com coma after dinner last night for the group uh at Arthur’s and Sons two enthusiastic thumbs up if you’re ever in town here uh and Mike Deltu you uh you will you you you you don’t just throw round manhole covers when you’re talking about I took home doggy bag um at any rate guiltiest charge. The reason why I bring that up is one of the things I did is uh I recorded an episode of uh Kelly and Mark. Mark Canuel, a Rich Eisen show guest uh and Kelly Ripa’s wife. They’re they’re they are shooting their show in this complex here just like Good Morning America. First take is next door. This is the get upset. At any rate, she Kelly asked me at one point what I do get asked frequently is do you on your show talk about reality television? And I said the only thing that popped into my head is I do every day. It’s called sports. Yes. And there is no greater reality show as we know than the National Football League. The ultimate you can’t make this up. Whether it’s on the field, Jaylen Herz turning the ball over twice on the same possession, for instance, a game like Monday nights, or the story that hit everybody’s feeds just yesterday and shocked everybody on Monday night as well when it first came out that Philip Rivers is coming out of retirement at age 44. And my first reaction was why? We know why the Colts would knock on his door because Daniel Jones is done for the year. And also Anthony Richardson is on injured reserve. Who knows when he’s coming back. Riley Leonard, their rookie quarterback from Notre Dame thrust into action last week. He may not be ready. One wouldn’t be surprised if he’s not ready for say the Seattle Seahawks who the Colts are going to visit. And the Seahawks have been tearing everybody limb from limb essentially figuratively. Although sometimes it looks literally when they’re doing that to opposing quarterbacks like Max Bromer. Um last time the uh Seahawks hosted a game, we saw a quarterback who is not ready, a third string quarterback who is not ready for action. And if Riley Leonard’s not ready for action and the Colts are eight and five and they have a a division to win and a playoff race to finish and make the playoffs after going 8 and two. Well, it makes sense. Let’s see if Philip Rivers is around. And my first reaction after was the why was um you know, is he kissing his family goodbye? Because again, he’s 44 and the teams that the Indianapolis Colts have to face the rest of the way. You tell me if there’s any wall flowers at Seattle, home for San Francisco, home for Jacksonville, and at Houston. Josh Hines Allen never thought I’m I’m going to be gunning for Philip Rivers. Will Will Anderson Jr. Denil Hunter Seattle Demarcus Lawrence and Leonard Williams and yada yada yada I mean you’re 44 and you weren’t moving around very well when we last saw you at 39. What’s going on? So I’m like all right he’s signed to the practice squad. There’s no way he’s gonna start on Sunday at Seattle where he’s probably sitting at home in Alabama watching the Colts. If you was watching, watching Daniel Jones go down, not thinking, “Oh, Daniel Jones going down. Not only am I get a phone call, but I’m going to start next week for the Colts in Seattle wearing Daniel Jones’s number.” So, that’s legit. Sure enough. Yeah, I mean that’s insane. They’re giving them 17. 17 is what Philip Rivers wore back in the day. And this is apparently what Philip Rivers is going to wear with Daniel Jones on injured reserve. You are allowed in the rule books to take that player’s number and give it to whoever you want. And that’s what we call cold reality in a reality sport known as the National Football League. And sure enough, Shane Stiken stepped to the microphone today and had this to say about Philip Rivers’s readiness right now. You know, Sunday after the game, you know, when Daniel went down and then we found out about Riley’s knee, we’re kind of like, “Hey, what are we going to do?” And uh me and Chris were talking, we’re like, “Hey, let’s let’s call Philip, see what he see what he says.” Called him Sunday night. We said, “Hey, what do you think?” He said, “Heck yeah, I’m interested. Heck yeah.” And so he slept on it. Said, “Sleep on it.” Um, and then Monday called him back Monday morning. He said, “I need to get up there. I need to get up there and throw, get in that building, uh, start moving around.” Um, so he came in here, threw, he didn’t forget how to throw a football. Um, so we did that Monday and then Tuesday he was in the hotel. Um, thinking it over. He called us. Uh, me and Chris were in the office. Uh, said, “What do you think?” He said, “Deagum it, let’s freaking go.” And so we said, “Let’s do it.” And so, uh, we’re excited for his opportunity. Um, like I said, he’s one of the most passionate uh players I’ve ever been around. The obsession for the game is off the charts. If Bradley’s healthy, will he start? We’ll see how the week goes. We’ll get to the end of the week and make that decision. Get to the end of the week. Make that decision. Who’s better for us to start in Seattle? Uh, rookie quarterback whose knee isn’t 100% in his first career start. and it’s on the road in Seattle. Who’s better? That or a 44year-old Hall of Future Hall of Fame quarterback who hasn’t played since 2020 who says, “Dad gummit, let’s give it a try. Which is the better option?” Now, they’re going to eyeball him because on the practice squad, he can practice. That’s, you know, the point of a practice squad. And um yeah, this is real. Philip Rivers might start Sunday in Seattle. Holy cow. It’s like riding a bike for him. Get right back on that kind of. But uh that’s a heck of a bike, man. Mike is trying to kill you. Yeah, it’s like one of those com bikes. It’s like 8t tall. But they don’t do this unless they plan on Philip playing. I can’t imagine. Well, let’s throw it in this direction that they will have to see it. You can’t just assume, oh, he says, “Dad, gum, I’ll try it.” And he hasn’t forgotten to throw out a football. The fall, the ball is flying out of his hands. That’s true. There’s a difference between moving around and being ready and and trusting the process if Riley Leonard could go do it. But every you you these games are all precious for everyone involved, including Philip Rivers, who probably never thought in the last five years this could even be possible. He’s sitting at home and all of a sudden, boom, phone’s ringing and it’s his old coordinator from back in the Chargers days and it’s Chris Ballard saying, “What do you think?” He turns to his wife and his kids and what do you think? Suddenly he’s on a plane of Indianapolis. The kids all have a vote. You think was like a sheriff meeting. Just to bring this all full circle, do you cover reality television? It it was the river’s tribal council. Nice. You know, you write it all down on a piece of paper. So, did the wife have the Here you go. Oh, Philip Rivers has spoken. God damn it. Let’s hear from Philly R. Hit it. It’s been a whirlwind of 48 hours, I’ll say. But each moment that goes by, I feel more and more confident. I really do. Uh I think for me the decision wasn’t easy. Um and uh because of all the things that that you all can imagine um you you you you there’s human nature to have a little doubt you know and I think for me working through that was well that’s normal you know that’s normal to have a little doubt who wouldn’t have doubt after five years you know but where’s that is that doubt real or not it’s like well that’s again like I go back to our first answer the only way you can find out is to is to go is to go I’m with it man how are you feeling right now like fired up because he’s one of he’s one of the all-time faves, right? You know, and it’s four men who are over 40. I personally of a certain age. How old are you? I know. Over 40. I’m way over 40. I’m right at that moment, I just said to myself, man, I hope this works out because here’s how I here’s how I know he’s playing. And he’s going to start on Sunday. Vegas odds, folks. Uh there are no props currently for Riley Leonard. Wow. You can bet on any prop you want for Philip Rivers. What does that mean? Seriously, like somebody in Vegas that that’s sitting here in Indianapolis. They know. They know. What a gambler thing to say. They know you. Seriously, it’s immediately what I thought of. Are there props available on Philip Rivers? They know. And you and I that’s not how we You guys aren’t thinking. They don’t know there if he’s going to on Thursday tweet this that the other thing or on Friday there’s a step back or Riley Leonard takes a step forward and they have to sit there and go Phillip I know we took you out of Alabama this week but you know you we’re we’re we think Riley does give us the best chance to win. I don’t know. I mean that said that said that said Seattle has been winning games by halftime. Yep. Okay. They have been Yeah. tearing quarterbacks apart defensively and I think all Philip Rivers has to do is move around to the point where they feel he can protect himself. Okay. And one of the muscles that he will use to protect himself is what’s between the temples. which is why he is automatically right now a better chance to start and win for the Colts than Riley Leonard because the amount of football that Philip has played, the amount of football that Philip has yet to forget, the amount of football that Philip has now dreamt that he’s never thought he could play again and will, and um also the sense that he might give to the rest of that locker room. We’re winning today. the whole sense that we’re all feeling a jolt here of excitement for the Colts and for all of us as football fans that could permeate the locker room. Those are all reasons why there might not be a prop bet on Riley Leonard right now. Not like there’s somebody in Indianapolis who calls, you know, uh a pal of Mo Greens right now and says, “Hey, I got something for you. Don’t waste your time putting up props online for Brockman to put his money on.” And I interest you in Philip River’s first quarter passing error. Oh god. You know, but but it it really is can he move around? Yeah. Will he be such an iron deer on the front lawn that Seattle has curated to the point where it looks like Miles Garrett’s front lawn on Halloween? You know what I mean? Last thing you want is for him just to get slaughtered. Oh my god. And some the his family too. Like, but you could see just like this is a Disney movie. This is just like, okay, really is. And how weird is that we’re here for this, right? So, let’s just let’s just end this segment with with this. All right, cuz it is all what we’re alluding to. Where would it rank for Philip Rivers to save the season for the Colts, get them to the playoffs, and make it to the Super Bowl? Oh my god. I mean, where would that rank Tom going to Tampa Sports or just with Curt Warner’s Magic Carpet ride coming out of nowhere with Yeah. I mean, just maybe going to Tampa and winning again. I don’t even think that it’s not that’s not the same. This is just sitting at home with your fam or whatever you’re doing on a Sunday having no idea. Was he watching the Colts play the Jaguars? I doubt it. No. Hey, you know, Phillip, we’re down a quarterback three. He’s even potentially not ready to go. We need somebody. We can’t sign. And if we’re going to sign anyone off the street, we might as well get a future Hall of Famer who knows Shaden Stiken and his playbook. And Shane knows him. And you know the organization. You know us. We know you. You know, the only thing we don’t know is how interested you are and how physically able you’re you are because we know mentally you’re ready. Um, and where would it rank it? I I don’t even know if there’s I’m racking my brain. There’s nothing like it. It would be like the movie The Rookie if if you know they won the World Series. If they went and he saved the World Series. Exactly. You know, I still think one of the greatest physical feats of all time is George Foreman winning the heavyweight title. There you go. 45 years old. That’s not a bad taking a decade off. But to me, there’s nothing tougher than that. You have two men who are just going at it oneonone with no protection. But if he were to take them to the Super Bowl, and you’d have to slide this into TJ’s personal number two because I I got to be honest with you, man, because the opposing quarterbacks in Seattle have been going one-on-one with no protection also, it seems. And this is a rough spot, man. This is a rough spot. Max Fromer as Michael Moore. Yeah, I was starting to feel bad for that kid, man. But I had Seattle’s defense in fantasy that game. So, what a story. It’s pretty cool. It’s playing out in Indianapolis as we speak. Hey, you made it all the way to the end. Thanks for that. I truly hope he lights up the league. I'm not a Colts fan, or hater, I just love the story.
If Rivers takes every spare moment to study each defense he's about to face, and they can run the ball, they have a real chance. But hey, isn't that every team's goal?
Someone needs to learn how to reach QBs because this is pathetic. There are dozens of 20 something QBs with loads of talent. Coaches won't touch players who need coaching.
“He didn’t forget how to throw a football” — That should give great confidence to Colts fans. 🤣 🤦♂️
Also, Rich—stop playing dumb like you don’t know that Vegas has any effect on the game and the gambling is ruining sports. You know what’s going on.
Rich keeps talking about this being a Disney movie, but don't forget Old Yeller was ALSO a Disney movie, and it scarred me for life; hopefully things go better for Phillip's kids!👀
If Rich can run a 40 yard dash ..Phillip can do it.
7:00 he was coaching high school ball
Hes been throwing
Maybe not as much but his arm aint completely dry
Felipe Rios
Can move around?? Rivers was basically immobile when he retired now he looks like he's put on 40lbs
This is NOT a Disney movie script, why is this show sponsored by Disney Plus. 🤮
This was pure garbage
Almost insulting to the Hawks suffocating Defense.
I know it sounds crazy, but who knows. I've seen lots of crazy things in the NFL. Who would have thought Flacco would have come out of retirement and play as well as almost any other top QB in the NFL. He's over 40. I know it's not exactly the same thing, but did anyone think he would have performed at the level he has? No. I hope this works and Rivers gets the Colts to a playoff game. That would be incredible and make watching football more entertaining than ever.
Nothing but audio guy and kid jokes.
Y’all can do better.
Philip Rivers will either throw 3 touchdowns or 4 picks, and nothing in between
The Seahawks about to be the villains in a 90s sports movie. 😂
NFL is rigged 😢😮😅 there have been some serious suspect games this year, the kinda stuff you can't ignore
Please mic him up!!
Even if Rivers only gets them to the playoffs.. instant comeback player of the year, and and instant all-time story. An AFC championship appearance might even put him into first ballot consideration. I always assumed he would get in the HOF, but i didnt think it would be first ballot.
Lack of protection has never stopped Phillip Rivers
Was Matt Ryan not a better option? Just asking
If the nfl truly cared about players safety they would have rules in place against a player who is not physically or mentally acclimated to play. Any player that has been out of the game for any extended period should have a 2 week acclimation period. I like rivers and he is very talented. Sorry folks but but you know the seahawks defense is going to go after him like crazy and not one person on their team is going to shed a tear if he gets beat up.
Whoever couldn't hear audio yesterday if you were listening with 1 ear bud, put your 2nd earbud in and it fixed the audio for me.
Android device
Raiders fan here chiming in I got to tell you this is the last great quarterback old school style. This really has a Rocky 6 feel to it, I'm pulling for Philip Rivers I hope he does well with this new age of football that's being demolished. The game changes every year from overtime to kick off landing zones it's just a mess right now it's not the NFL I grew up with. Let's go Philip Rivers bring that old school mentality back on pulling for you buddy God bless.
You know if they do well we have a Disney + original move on our hands
this is a COLOSSAL move — either a colossal success or colossal failure
Why is it ALWAYS our beloved Colts that try these ridiculous experiments. Jeff Saturday, Matt Ryan when his arm was basically a spaghetti noodle, AR being the starter for much longer than he should have.
No other team does this stuff like we do. There are some dumpster fires franchises out there but no other team would ask a guy who’s a grandpa at 44 out of the league for 5 years to come play a week later. Just wild.
DJ gave it to Rivers lol
I don’t have any affinity towards the old set, but this set sucks!
The pressure is on Seattle, if they slip he will slice & dice
The Seahawks D is not to blame if the other team puts a grandpa in front of them. Whatever happens… blame the Colts.
“Wall flowers”? Complete misuse of the term. Rich please stop mangling the language.
I’d have to rank this up there with the George Foreman knockout of Michael Moorer. No doubt this would be a big Hollywood movie one day.
"Dang nabit.. lets go". Only fossils talk like that. This is embarrassing. My money is on Colts lose their last seven games and Rivers does NOT make it through the first game uninjured.
Seahawks, 49ers. Jaguars, Texans… Colts are delusional. Even Richardson smashed his own face in to avoid these four teams.
Wait . How did Jalen turn it over twice on the same possession? 😂 That's bonkers! Was it a penalty that gave it back only to cough it up again?
I'm pretty sure Seattle's last game was tied at half time. Seattle winning games in the first half is a pretty low info.
If Rivers comes back and has a killer run it would be so fun to see. But it’s incredibly unlikely to happen. Just hope the old man doesn’t get too banged up.
