The FINAL Mariners Updates from MLB’s Winter Meetings

The winter meetings are officially over and the Mariners did absolutely nothing. Joe and I are going to talk about the Pet Lonzo deal that came around during the winter meetings and how that compares to the value the Mariners are getting with Josh Naylor because honestly it kind of feels like a steal the Mariners have Josh Naylor for what we got him for. We’re then going to give you guys our FanDuel favorites before we talk about a couple of articles from the Seattle Times. One talking about how Jorge Palano may be looking for a four-year deal and the other talking about Alex Bregman potentially willing to sign with the Mariners. Weird stuff going on at the Winter Meetings in 2025. Thank you guys so much for watching episode 257 of the Hit It Here podcast, part of the Believe Network and presented by FanDuel. And this is the Michael episode of the podcast. Michael went in and bought some of our merch off of the fourth wall shop we have linked in the in the description down below. So, shout out to you, Michael. Once you get that in, please feel free to send us a picture of it. Super excited and thank you so much for your support. And I am here with someone wearing our merch and Joe Lacy. Joe, how we doing? Feeling very good and feeling exceptionally good because of the Josh Naylor petonzo contract disparity. When you get a guy that you know the organization wants and you get him for five years, 92 and a half million, it’s a weird, not weird, but it’s 18ish million annual average. But that first year, you’re only paying him 11. Like that was already a slam dunk contract it felt like from the Mariners given to Josh Naylor to shore up a position that has been pretty fluky for the Mariners for, you know, some time now. first base. There really hasn’t been someone occupying that that felt like they were going to have the stopping power and the or not the staying power stopping power was just COD perks. Um yo, you’ve been playing Black Ops 7. I’ve been playing Black Ops 7. It’s been fun. Um like not someone there hasn’t really been someone there that’s going to, you know, just like hold down the position super well. Ty France was the last one and there was a chance for for Tai. There was for a little bit felt like and then Sheldon Noisy that bastard bastard never forgive him but Josh Naylor absolute slam dunk for the Mariners and a lot of times you know over the last couple years like oh what you know could the Mariners go after Pete Alonzo there have been I mean he’s been on the thumbnail he’s been the topic of a video on this channel I think more than twice probably during during offseason and free agency rumors and he’s a free agent again this here talks about like should they go after Peter? Pete. I was trying to say Pete or Josh, but then it just sounded like I said Peter. Peter. Peta. I bet I bet Naylor or Alonszo. And some people would say that they preferred Alonzo just in terms of like the impact that he can make with the power. The slug is obviously in favor of Alonzo. I will still however take Josh Naylor at $18.5 million or $18.25 million annual average for the next five years compared to paying Pete Alonzo $31 million over the next five years. Alonzo inked a contract with the Baltimore Orioles 5 years $155 million. Unreal level of payday for him. I mean congrats to him I guess. Congrats to the Orioles for getting a big power bat in the middle of the night that it feels like they probably need. Rip Ryan Mount Castle, Kobe Mayo’s on the block probably. There’s a lot of moving parts with the Orioles that, you know, maybe aren’t necessarily being thought about, but the thing that is being talked about is the AL East just got maybe a little bit more competitive with Pete being in there, you know, for a full 162. It’s a big contract that the Orioles gave out to Pete Alonzo. Yeah. I mean, for the first time in what feels like forever, the actual the Orioles actually got a big fish. You know, there there’s always been talk about them like trying to sign somebody and then, oh, the what was it? The physical didn’t come back good or uh never mind, haha, they actually got Pete Alonzo. And you look at the comparison between Alonzo and Naylor and yeah, Alonzo is probably the better player. Yeah, he had a 3.4 4 war compared to Josh Naylor’s 3.1 in 2025. Pete played in all 162 games, which I mean, yeah, sure. He hit 38 home runs. We know the power is there for Pete with 126 RBI. Josh stole 29 more bases, though, than Pete Alonzo did. So, it’s the intangibles. It’s the difference. Uh Josh hit 295 compared to Pete’s 272. And Josh had a higher OBP. But I mean, when it all comes down to it, OPS plus Pete Alonzo had a 144 and Josh Taylor had a 128. Yeah, Pete Alonzo is probably the better player. Sure, I wouldn’t have paid him $31 million. He’s not He’s not literally nearly double what Josh Naylor is. I mean, you know, depending on how you’re looking at the contract. And so, when it comes to what the Mariners are getting with Josh Naylor, a they know they’re getting a gamer. They know that they’re getting a guy who the clubhouse and the fan base already loves and B because of his deal they know they can use that money elsewhere to go out there and add to whether that be the bullpen or you know if they’re still looking at Jorge Palano etc. Like because they have the extra money that they wouldn’t have had had they given this deal to Pete Alonzo then I think that that gives them the flexibility to go out there and make more moves. Now the Orioles still can too. Yeah. their crop of blonde white guys grows once again and by adding Pete Alonzo they have a chance to have a really really potent lineup. They also need to add some starting pitching and I think the Orioles might be the favorites in the American League East right now. It’s close between them and the Yankees in my opinion, but adding Pete is a huge move for them, especially if they’re still going to go get like a Framber Valdez, even though everyone hates him, a Framber Valdez or something that makes them very, very strong. Whereas the Mariners, they’re a very, very strong team already, but they probably still need to add one more piece as well. Yeah, the Orioles are quietly having, maybe not quietly, I mean, they’re having a pretty good offseason so far. The Taylor Ward Grayson Rodriguez trade could be suspect, but if they supplement the pitching through free agency or a via trade if they do trade Kobe Mayo, like they got Corbin Burns for Joey Ortiz and DL Hall. Could they get another starting pitcher maybe not of the caliber of Corbin Burns for Kobe Mayo Plus? Probably. I mean, it’s probably out there somewhere, but they signed Hellley. Like, they they’ve had a decent off like pretty good offseason so far. I’m surprised you’re picking them as part of the favorites and not the AL pennent winners Blue Jays who have signed Dylan CE. But maybe I shouldn’t be surprised that you’re not valuing the Blue Jays after signing Dylan because he’s going to lose them more games than win them games, right? That’s sucks. Yeah, he sucks. But I I understand why. I mean, maybe it’s a Scott Borass. Bor Jesus, I can’t talk today. Borass, he’s just ass. Scott Boris is just ass. So like that’s a fair point. That’s that’s where my mind went. I I guess I’m struggling. Did I take a nap or did you take a nap? I can’t tell. That’s a great question. Alonzo getting a huge deal is not surprising to me. And talking about how what what Naylor’s contract and how they’ve set it up, what it means for the Mariners to be able to do this. It it shouldn’t have been. It’s ne it never should be. The Mariners couldn’t sign Pete Alonzo to the $30 million and then they can’t do anything else. It should never be that way. It just that’s what we have come to know as the way that the Mariners will operate with their spending in terms of where they expect their payroll to be at because it is it it’s stated publicly. It has been it’s been said ad nauseium, you know, how much money that that they’d be willing to spend. If they spent $30 million on Pete Alonzo, assuming that it’s, you know, strictly 31, 31, whatever, kiss the rest of your off seasonason goodbye. Like that is your one move. If I could have Naylor or Alonzo next year, like what player do I think will have the better year? I mean, it’s it’s hard to say. It really is. I I do agree with you that na that like Naylor provides a lot more intangibles. He’s familiar with the clubhouse. He’s he’s a gamer, etc. Alonzo since coming into the league, he’s just done it every single year. Like he really hasn’t missed a step. His worst year maybe was 2024 or 2020, but like 2020, like you know, what do you what do you make of 60 games, whatever. But perennial Allstar, he’s going to have an OPS like north of like 830 every single season. Like he is an absolute like just slugger. Like he is like the def definition of a slugger. And teams will always pay pretty good dollar for that. And frankly, I’m I’m I would have been fine with signing Pete Alonzo. It’s just I’m very okay with very much okay with where the Mariners went with their choice of first base by getting Josh Naylor specifically at the con at the value that they did. Like if if they had waited for Alonzo to sign and then like what does Naylor like how much more money does Naylor make if he waited for Alonzo to sign? Like truthfully it it could be this, you know, negligible difference. It could just be a silly what if, but I feel like a team could have paid him 110 and I wouldn’t have batted an eye, right? I mean, I did I kind of felt that way even before the Mariners signed Josh Naylor that he could realistically somewhere go get 110. Whether that be with like I mean even a team like the Yankees like that wouldn’t have shocked me had they gone out there and done that. Yeah. Not maybe not the Berg. Yeah. The the the talk about Pittsburgh just they’re like yeah we’re going to spend some money on Josh Naylor or Jorge Palano even. It’s like what do we do? No you’re not. No you’re not. Maybe they will. None of Why would those guys want to go there? The only one that like maybe Gino will go there. You know man it’s the skins difference. hope to get traded at the deadline or something. Yeah. Overall over the next five years, Josh Aaylor’s 28 and Pete Alonzo’s 31. Like, so you have one guy through his age 36 season. You have one guy through his age 33 season. It’s like, you know, is Alonzo going to slow down? He shows no signs of it. So, I would say no. Is Naylor going to be continue to be the gamer that he is? I don’t see why not. So assuming that both guys continue on the same trajectory they’ve been on, I still think I would much rather have Josh Naylor just because of the lower cost and the flexibility to go out there and make more moves. But nobody in the world is going to say they wouldn’t have wanted Pete Alonzo like just in general like I would love to have Pete Alonzo on my baseball team but because just with all the other things I think I would rather have Josh Naylor. Now I wouldn’t have bet on the Mariners to spend $31 million on a first baseman but maybe you could with FanDuel. Thank you to FanDuel for being a sponsor for the Hit It Here podcast. The Seattle Seahawks are taking on the Indianapolis Colts this weekend and the Colts team, it’s pretty banged up. They have signed Philip Rivers to the practice squad. Like that’s a very serious thing that’s going on. So it’s unsurprising that the Seahawks are minus 1200 favorites in the money line whereas the Colts are at plus 750. The Colts are severe underdogs in this one. The Seahawks are a good to great team playing a banged up team and the same game parlay that FanDuel has cooked up over there. Zack Charbanet anytime touchdown. Jackson Smith and Jigba anytime touchdown. Philip Rivers alt pass passing yard line of 200 plus. And then Philip Rivers alt passing touchdowns two plus passing touchdowns. That is plus 2,859 odds. $10 wins you 285 bucks. Remember to gamble responsibly if you do. So now back to the podcast. Now while you probably can’t make that bet over on FanDuel and you probably can’t make this one either, but at the beginning of the offseason, I would have bet that the Mariners were going to resign Jorge Palano. We know that they still are looking for one more infielder of some sort and Palano has been pretty much their number one target since they resigned Josh Naylor and I guess trading for uh Jose A Ferrer as well. that was their number one trade target I think Hollander Dotto said but Jorge Palano is a pretty big target for them and we’ve been talking I think over the past few months about what a deal could look like for Jorge Palano whether that be you know like a 2-year 28 you know we’re talking like a maybe a thirdyear option well as it turns out Jorge Palano is pushing to receive a contract of at least three years preferably four with an average annual salary of more than $12 million. And again, if he’s looking to have a 4-year contract put on his table, Mhm. I think that the Mariners are probably out on that. I don’t think that unless there’s like some some team like if they’re team options, right? Like let’s say the fourth year is a team option, maybe the Mariners would be willing to go three. But Jorge Palano is 32, gonna be 33 in July. A four-year deal putting him at 37. I just I don’t see a world where the Mariners are going to do that when they have the middle infield talent that they do have, especially with the like in the framework of where their middle infield talent is at. By I mean by the end of this season, Polo could be a full-time DH for this specific team. you’re not going to want that kind of investment on an aging, you know, player unless they’ve had a, I think, a tremendous track record at that position. I think the Nelson Cruz contract, bringing him as in as your DH is is different than what you’re doing with Jorge Palano. If you’re bringing in Jorge Palano, he’s more of, I think, a bridge player to allow the middle infield talent to develop fully and then by the time that Polo’s contract is done, he’s probably more of a bench role for your team, assuming that he does naturally regress, which I don’t necessarily think is like a guarantee with where he’s at in his age. And like he had a great season last year. He showed a great ability to bounce back. And Polo’s been one of the better offensive players up the middle, specifically at second base, you know, for the last like five or six years. And if he wants to bet on himself kind of again, like he did with Seattle last year, getting a four-year contract or three years with a a mutual or three years with a player, three years with a team, whatever. I think that’s fully within his rights because frankly, he earned it. I don’t think he’s going to get that from the Mariners, though. And in the day two winter meetings article that Dvish and Jude both worked on over on the Seattle Times, you kind of laid out the initial part there where Palano’s initial ask sources say was for four a four-year contract believed to have offered two years for the 32-year-old second baseman/desated hitter. I imagine there’s probably if anything like a mutual option in a for a third year as like the like the furthest that the Mariners would go. The article continues on here where the Pirates once again have been aggressively pursuing offensive upgrades and they have been linked to Palanco and it’s I think it’s a little bit of like speculation here on this final part saying it’s possible the Pirates have a better offer on the table for him that fouryear if it is for you know for you know you said 12 million right so four years 48 million if it’s four years 50 four years 52 whatever the Pirates could have that offer on the table so then the question becomes As Jude and Divish note, does he take more money to play in Pittsburgh or another team that maybe is seeking his services or take less to return to Seattle and play for a contender? And in the modern base in in the modern MLB, Pittsburgh could be a contender next year. Things could fall right for them, right? In in a in a in a perfect world, the pitching’s good enough. some things fall right for the bullpen and then big offensive seasons from if they bring in Jorge Palano maybe like O’Neal Cruz finally has a very you know stable like it’s a it’s a pipe dream for sure but it nothing is ruled off the table I think with how the current game is being set up where a a fair amount of teams make it into the postseason six teams from both sides If the Pirates think that if they get Jorge Palano and they maybe add one other additional piece. I mean, they signed Gregory Sodto yesterday or the day before to bolster the bullpen for $7.75 million. Listen, you’re really reaching right now. Listen, I’m just trying to play devil’s advocate for the Pirates here. All right. The Bucko fan within me. I’m just kidding. Evan Meek would be so disappointed in me right now. Yes, he would. I I think that for what the Mariners are looking for, I don’t think it’s unrealistic if Polo doesn’t necessarily want that with given what has been laid out for his wants and what his agent has kind of said. I think the Mariners had their run with Polo and had their chance to kind of like like they had this opportunity last year and it worked out tremendously for them. If they want to in his eyes lowball, I’ll put quotes around that because I don’t think that they’re necessarily lowballing him. I think he is just thinking very highly of himself, which he should after the year that he had a fully healthy year pretty much coming off knee surgery that could have derailed and ended his career. He showed that like, no, I can still do this. And even while playing second base a decent amount down the stretch, like he became the mayor’s second baseman pretty much because Cole Young slumping tremendously. like there will be a team that will take a shot on him for probably that desired length. I don’t think it’ll be the mayors and they will probably defer to going for Brendan Donovan or Brandon Laauo as backup plans or budget versions of Palano with Willie Castro or Luis Renifo as like those are the fallback fallback plans. I’d say I think I’ve become like the Luis Ranifo and Willie Castro have become like two of my least favorite players in baseball just for what they like represent. You know what I mean? Like lack of good moves at second base. Yeah, like they’re they’re fine players to add, but yeah, the the like you can do better than that. Yeah, I would assume that the Mariners have their best offer on the table for Polo already. Like I would assume they already made it and they’re probably not going to be budging on that. And the rumor was that Jorge Palano was expected to sign in the next couple of days. Um I we were kind of hoping that was going to happen at the winter meetings. Obviously it did not. But if that’s the case, well I guess it’s probably it has ended, huh? Say it’s it’s it’s Wednesday, but like it’s ended. So like it wouldn’t really count. There’s no buzz or beers here. They all flew home already. Yeah. Um checkouts at 11. They have inflight Wi-Fi. I don’t know, man. They could still be wheeling and dealing on the plane. That is true. It’s it’s a situation where if Jorge Palano signs this week and let’s say it’s not with the Mariners, which is certainly like you everything you just outlined is certainly possible. I think and I I would not prefer this option. I think that if the se if the offseason ended today, the Mariners would be okay with rolling into 2026 with the roster other than not having a backup catcher. Obviously, they need to go do that, but they they’d be okay with having Ben Williamson and Cole Young be the opening day options along with Colt Emerson getting a chance, Ryan Bliss getting a chance, Leo Rev, like there’s plenty of other guys. Again, I don’t think that’s going to happen, but I think that that they are willing to wait out the market a little bit because they are okay if that is like the the worst case scenario because in the end, Cole Young could very well still be the second baseman of the future. Mhm. Ben William, Williamson could definitely be the third baseman of the future. You’re never going to know if those guys don’t get really a chance to play, which is why it makes more sense for the Mars to go after a guy like Jorge Palano who can DH a little bit or I mean even Gino, though, we’ll talk about that here in a second, who could DH a little bit. The other options that I’ve heard that we’ve heard laid out over the past, you know, week or so have been Brandon Laauo, have been uh Catel Marte, which it’s not going to happen. Sure. Brennan Donovan, and the one that I that I haven’t heard talked about a whole lot was Jake Croninworth. I mean, he can play first base. He’s making 12 million a year for the next four years. Like, he kind of fits. He’s basically making what the Jorge Palanco contract would be. I don’t know if I I I would definitely prefer to have Jorge Palano for that price, but Croninorth, I think, offers a little bit more positional versatility than Jorge Palano does. So, kind of separate, you know, on either side there. But yeah, I think that those are kind of the guys the Mariners could be looking at. With that being said, an article that came out today mentioned the Mariners are looking for only one new one infielder the rest of the way and probably a reliever and then probably a catcher, but one infielder the rest of the way. If that’s not Jorge Palano, there in this article, man, it is mentioned that Scott Boris Boris came to the Mariners and said who represents Alex Bregman, the top free agent third baseman. He initiated discussions with the Mariners to express Bregman’s willingness to consider Seattle as a destination. an industry source told the Times. So, there’s a lot to talk about with Alex Bregman, the player. I hate the guy, as all of you know. He’s a flea on the Nutsack Society. He’s a great baseball player. Great player. He is has a career 133 um OPS plus, put up a I’m sorry, 132 OPS plus, put up a 128 in 2025, hitting eight he had 18 home runs. He was injured a little bit last year. career 272 365 481 hitter with an 846 ops. He’s been a winner throughout his entire career. The amount of money that it is going it’s going to cost you $30 million a year to sign Alex Bregman. Yep. For I would say probably for a I’d call it a five or sixyear deal. Um he’s 31 years old which actually kind of surprised me. I didn’t think he was that old, but you know, uh maybe with like an option or something there at the end. It’s not going to happen. Like I I Good for you, Scott Boris, to Alex would love to come play for you. It’s just a bidding war tactic. Yep. Scott Boris is good at this. That’s That’s exactly what he’s doing. It’s a bidding war tactic to say, “Oh, well, he’s willing to even go play for the Mariners, so he’ll play wherever you need him to, blah, blah, blah.” It makes literally zero sense because again, yes, you’d be getting the best third baseman on the market. Sure. Awesome. For the price, for all the other things, it doesn’t make sense in my opinion for the for Alex Bregman to be a Mariner. If Pete Alonzo was able to get $31 million at five years, if Bregman only gets five years, he’s he he should make more than Pete Alonzo in my eyes, I think, as far as what he can provide to you from a winning standpoint. I think position versatility is better. He’s a third baseman, but he can play second base. He played shortstop for an entire season for the Astros. Like, he is more versatile. He I think is a better overall player. The issue I think with Bregman is that there might be a little bit of I I don’t want to say like injury concern but like just last year there’s you know there’s some injuries that kind of prevented him from staying healthy all season whereas Pete has penciled in every single season 150 games plus like he is just the the pillar of he he is like Matt I mean there’s a handful of first baseman around the league honestly that do it. Matt Olsen, Pete Alonzo, like there are guys that just go out there and play every single day. And Bregman, outside of a handful of years, has done that pretty consistently as well. I think Bregman would be more expensive than Peter Lonzo. And I don’t know if I’m wrong in that assessment, but it it’s where it gets to the six years where I think you could probably pay him 31 million and like that is equivalent because like he’s getting an extra year. The mayors simply aren’t going to do it. Like this is just good postulating from Boris and like just making sure that he gets his players that he’s representing the best contract or the best negotiations possible. It is just throwing another hat into the ring for other teams to look at and be like, you know, that fit does make sense. We might have to hike up our offer by $5 million and, you know, or whatever. we need to add more incentives. If he finishes top five in MVP, he better get a bonus of a million dollars. Like there’s just random things like that that are just good practice is an unfortunate thing that I’d have to say about mega agent Scott Boris. Like he just if if Alex Bregman is a flea on the nutsack of society to you, I don’t know how I could describe how my my feelings about Scott Boris. I he he is the nut sack I guess maybe so he’s a he’s just kind of a weird dude but he knows what he’s doing clearly with how many players that he has like you know under his representation and there’s a little bit of like hiccups last year where like some players their market’s not materializing and there was some that clearly has not made much of a difference this year I don’t think like he’s still chugging right along and the sentiment you kind of opened up this topic with about how the Mar or I guess ended last topic with the bridge between these two topics was the Mariners feeling okay rolling into next year if the offseason ended today with Ben Williamson as their opening day third baseman and Cole Young likely being the opening day second baseman that’s kind of outlined in this article as well from Adam Jude saying with some of the conversation about or the the writings here about Bregman and it was previously stated in this article about Auheno Suarez as being an option and he talked about that as being like a fall back for them. A reunion seems unlikely, but they wouldn’t bring him back to play third base every day. It’s more of a split time between third base DH and maybe some first base. But all that to consider, this is a direct quote from the article. Club executives Jerry Poto and Justin Hollander have been consistent about their intentions for next season. They want to give runway to their promising young infielders to grow into regular roles. As things stand, Ben Ben Williamson is pencled in as the opening day third baseman and Cole Young is the front runner to take over at second. I know a lot of people probably aren’t happy with that because they could feasibly upgrade both positions and be better suited to potentially be the American League favorite if they were to upgrade at both positions for next year. Like if you got Polo and Brendan Donovan, I think that’s a good upgrade at both positions, assuming Brendon Donovan can still play third base. But there there’s some funky stuff going on with position flexibility there. But a lot of people aren’t happy necessarily with if it’s Polo that means no Donovan or LA or if it’s Donovan there’s no Polo or LA. Like a lot of people like they can exist on the same roster. I don’t necessarily disagree with that. just where have we ever seen any indication that the Mariners weren’t like they that they would go for that route? I haven’t necessarily thought at any point that if we got Naylor, if we got Polo that there would be an option for someone on Polo’s level as well to be able to be brought in. like they probably and it’s stated in this article that they’re only going to bring in one more infielder. If they can play both second base and third base, great. If they can only play second base, they feel comfortable with Ben Williams. And as the stout defender that he is, and hopefully he can grow into an offensive profile that we saw a little bit down at Tacoma. Hollander notes in this or there’s like a quote from Art Hollander in this that you’re not going to completely change the approach of the guy that hits the ball to right field every time and just point to left field and say do that now. It’s more about taking your shots and taking your opportunities when you know you can open up a little bit, drop the elbow and launch a ball into the left field stance kind of a situation for Ben Williams. And I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. They know his approach. They know how he likes to take the approach. If he can just find spots to really take a hack, I think it can go a long way from him, a long way for him in terms of raising his value for if he’s, you know, a half, you know, part-time third baseman for the Mariners. I don’t think that’s a bad thing. It’s just it’s not what a lot of people want because they know that the shortcomings that can come with Ben Williamson if he bottoms out. Same thing with Cole Young. Like both barely put up OPS’s over 600. I get why people want upgrades and you’re looking at the likes of Alex Bregman and in this conversation because that’s a very good baseball player. It’s just simply not going to happen though with what we know about how the Mariners tend to operate. I think that for it to happen where you have both Pelano and like say Donovan on the same team, you would have to trade one of Ben Williamson or Cole Young. I do not see a situation where all four of them are on the roster at the same time together simply because it the Mariners like you mentioned are not the team that’s going to block guys. They’re not I mean we we they’re not the team that’s going to say all right well Alex Bregman you’re going to play third and Cel Marte you’re going to play second. Yeah, the team’s better, immediately better if you do that. But you have to give these young guys chances to play because let’s say Cole Young turns into the next Brendan Donovan. Awesome. You have him for much cheaper. Cool. That that’s that’s the way the game works. And sure, you can have Brennan Donovan at third, Jay Palano mainly dhing with Cole Young at second. Sure. Like that that could be an option. I highly doubt that the Mariners are looking to do something like that. And what do according to this article envisions a scenario where a veteran hitter be it Palano Donovan or someone else bats in the number six spot in the lineup followed by Young and Williamson in some order and then JP Crawford. Mhm. Sure. I think it would probably if you get Polo it would probably go Polo and then Young Williamson JP just because you’re splitting up the lefty righty there. But um Brennan Donovan, sure if you want to put him there that’s fine. If you want to put Baron in the leadoff spot and have Randy Rosena then be that veteran presence in that six spot, awesome. There are options there. But going into a season where as of right now the Mariners don’t have a DH necessarily, it’s Domone, I guess, with Victor Roblace in right field, there’s just if you can just fill one of those holes the rest of the way, the rest of the pieces kind of fall into place with this roster. A second baseman, you fill a second base spot. Okay, cool. What do you do with Cole Young? Maybe, you know, you use him as a trade ship to go get a reliever or something. I don’t know. I don’t see a scenario where what I mentioned earlier, the Mariners are okay with going into the year with these two guys as the primary options. I don’t see a scenario where they are done right now. That just doesn’t make sense. Like obviously, again, they still need to add a catcher. They still need to add relievers, but I don’t see a scenario where they are done with the infield market because if Palano signs this week, that’s going to put so much clarity out there about, okay, well, our big fish is gone. What are we going to do now? I feel like then they pivot to Brandon Donovan. It’s okay. And you’re not going to block Colt Emerson either. So, if you’re going to give Colt Emerson every chance to be your opening day third baseman, if you’re the Mariners, you’re not going to go out there and get a full-time third baseman. Mm-m. You’re not. And that’s why I think Gino makes some sense. It makes sense to bring Gino back in a DH third base, first base um capacity. I still think that Ben Williamson gets the lion share of defensive innings over there at third base. I still think that if you bring in Brendan Donovan, you’re still going to want to give a lot of time to Cole Young at second base because you need to see what you have with those guys. And that’s what the Mariners, in my opinion, are going to be doing with this roster. Let us know in the comments down below who you would prefer the Mariners to add. We appreciate you guys watching episode 257 of the Hit It Here podcast presented by FanDuel. And go Mariners.

  1. I will take naylor all day long. We need a guy that not only hits like he does but is distracting to the pitcher when he is on base. I absolutely love that even though he isn’t super fast he can steal like that because he is so smart. Plus we all love his energy and unmatched focus.

  2. If they can't get Polo on a two year deal I hope they pivot to someone like Donovan, Nico, or Lowe. As close as we were to the series last season I can't see them wanting to just chance it with the youngsters at second and third.

  3. You simply can’t be serious about winning a World Series when you’re choosing to start the season with two rookies in the starting lineup. We already saw last season with Cole Young how fast a rookie can fall off a cliff. At least we might be good in 2030.

  4. I hate Boras more than I dislike Bregman, but he's far too expensive at his age and money. I jsut don't trust Boras for anything and I'm no Bregman fan either.

  5. Unlike with Naylor, where we needed a 1B, there are lots of options in replacing Polo. We need the bat and a majority DH, but a replacement could play some C, 3B, 1B or corner OF or any combination of any or all of those. There's no reason to overpay or add more years to a Polo contract.

  6. One other option we're not talking much about is Kazuma Okamoto. If you could get him on a 3yr 15M deal, or a prove it 2yr + options, he could play some 3B, back up Naylor at 1B, and be our regular DH. It's risky if his bat doesn't translate to MLB, but I'd take Okamoto at 3/15 over Polo at the same price.

  7. I'm so confused about that article's projected lineup according to Dipoto. Is it telling more than it says? You said he envisions whichever vet 2B/3B option as the 6 hole. If Cole/Colt/Ben/JP are in some way the 7/8/9, Randy is the 5, and then you have Julio, Naylor, and Cal, who is the other option? Or are they saying Robles/Canzone is a top 5 option? That seems like a jump from where we ended last year and the general perception over where that position is. Feel like that's expecting more out of them than we should. But every year they seem to always account for one less bat than they should.

  8. Cards fan here. Stumbled on the cast. What do you guys think it would take to get Gilbert? Take 2 of the 4 between Contreras,Donovan, Nootbar, Gorman plus one of catching prospects all of which are in top 10 of the system. Cards get Gilbert and a lower prospect in the 20th ranking area. Deal?
