ESPN’s Shams Charania Provides HUGE UPDATE On Anthony Davis Trade Reports | Mavericks Trade Rumors
Another [Music] day, another Anthony Davis update is on Mavericks today by chat sports. Welcome into the show. Jeffrey Cooperstein here. And the Mavericks are finally back to basketball tomorrow as they host the Brooklyn Nets after this 6-day break. And hopefully the Mavs can continue their winning ways as of late. But the focus on today’s show will be Anthony Davis where Sham Shania says there will be multiple suitors for AD and the Mavericks have not ruled out an extension. What is that all about? We’ll talk about it all here on the show, but if you haven’t already, hit that subscribe button at youtube.com/mavstv for the latest Mavericks news and rumors. Let’s discuss those AD trade rumors here because boy oh boy are these interesting. And Shams came out here and definitively said that there will be multiple shooters. Not that there expects to be, not that there might be, no, he said there will be multiple suitors for Anthony Davis. And he named teams specifically that there will that would pursue a potential AD trade. The Detroit Pistons, the Atlanta Hawks, and Toronto Raptors were all names mentioned. of course, all in the Eastern Conference and all teams that have the flexibility to make an AD trade happen. The Pistons obviously a playoff team. Hawks are decent and the Raptors are as well. All three of these teams have gotten off to decent starts this year. But my initial reaction to that is great. Send him to the East. I don’t want to have to deal with AD in the West. God forbid he actually gets healthy and he puts together some games where he could come back and haunt the Mavericks. that wouldn’t be good. So, I do like the idea of sending him to the Eastern Conference and I think the Mavericks also like the idea of sending him to the Eastern Conference. I think at the end of the day though, the Mavs probably really wouldn’t care where they send AD as long as they could get a package they deem appropriate to in exchange for him. Now, he obviously has two and a half years left at 50 plus million dollars a season on his contract and we’re talking extension already. And we’ll get into some of that here in a moment cuz I just simply can’t believe that. But I did want to start with looking at some of the potential packages that teams could offer for AD. Here’s what the Pistons could offer you. The expiring contract of Tobias Harris, which is like right around 26 million. Jaden Ivy who becomes a restricted free agent this off seasonason and then Isaiah Stewart or Duncan Robinson and multiple first round picks. Now Duncan Robinson is still can shoot it really well in the league, but I’ve always liked Isaiah Stewart and the Mavericks have always liked Isaiah Stewart. He’s actually like been a Mavericks trade target for a long time. So, if the Pistons were to offer you Tobias, Jaden Ivy, Isaiah Stewart, and two first round picks, I think that’d be a pretty solid package that Michael Finley and Matt Ricardi would have to consider. Uh, with the trade deadline nears like this would be something I would absolutely consider if I were running the Dallas Mavericks. Let’s move on to the Atlanta Hawks. And this one’s kind of funny because it involves Chris Porcingis coming back to the Dallas Mavericks. Talk about full circle as KP got traded at the 2023 or 22, excuse me, NBA trade deadline, which was Porzingis for Spencer Denwy and Davis Bertton. Look, that trade ended up working out because that year the Mavericks got to the Western Conference Finals and Denwitty was a big part of that squad. But the Hawks package here nonetheless would be Porzingis coming back on his expiring contract, Zachary Reach and Multiple First. Maybe this would be too much for the Atlanta Hawks to give up. Rehash was second in rookie of the year voting last year uh as not playing quite as well this season, but he has started in every game he’s played in and is factoring heavily into the Atlanta Hawks rotation. But if I’m the Mavericks, I would want to try to find a young player with a lot of upside on a controllable salary. And that’s what Zachary Reach is. And maybe I’m being a little overzealous here and the Hawks would have no interest in giving up Reach and a potential Anthony Davis deal, but this is absolutely what I would be asking for if I was going to the Atlanta Hawks GM. I want the young player. I want the expiring deal and I want to recoup some of my draft assets. I The theme of this is I want the Mavericks to get multiple first round picks. I want them to try to be able to recoup some of those controllable first that they have cuz I believe right now they only have one maybe two controllable first until 2030. I believe it’s just one and then they have a couple of pig swaps in there and whatnot. But at the end of the day the Mavericks need to recoup their draft cupboard. They need to stockpile those assets to either get younger and get more affordable or consolidate all of those and make another trade. try to bring somebody else in of all-star caliber, which would be extremely unlikely at this point in time. And as far as the Toronto Raptors go, they really don’t have a package that works out monetarily. Like, you’re talking about Yakob Purle, you’re talking about Brandon Ingram, you’re talking about RJ Barrett, you’re talking about a couple of guys who when you put all the money together, it doesn’t really fit in a two team deal. So, you would likely need a third team to get involved with the Anthony Davis if you were to send him to the Toronto Raptors. But, at the end of the day, I am okay with the Mavericks taking a patient approach with the AD trade rumors. Let it play out. See how this team actually performs over the next month, 6 weeks or so, and you can make a decision from there. Like, there is no particular rush to trade Anthony Davis right now. This team is 14 or five. They have a favorable schedule coming up and they are going to be able to see whether or not they’re going to be fighting for the playin or if they are just going to tank quote unquote the rest of the season. I think Michael Finley and Matt Ricardi are going to do their due diligence on all of the potential options when it comes to Anthony Davis. And leading up to that February 5th trade deadline, I think the Mavericks will do everything they can to decide what the best course of action is going forward. And that also includes a potential extension. Sham Shirania said that the Mavericks have not ruled out an extension with Anthony Davis, but there is no way this is a real possibility with the Mavericks and Anthony Davis. I’m almost positive that this is just a ploy to keep AD motivated and be like, “Hey man, if you if you stay healthy and you play well, like we are absolutely open, do an extension.” The Mavericks would be absolute buffoons to give AD a four-year max extension of 275 million. If they did that, that would arguably be worse than trading Luka away. This brother can’t stay healthy for more than half the season. I like Anthony Davis a lot. Are you paying AD 70 plus million at 38 years old? Absolutely not. You cannot give AD an extension. And the way Rich Paul kind of framed it is he or the way Sham Shirania kind of framed it, he said Rich Paul and the Mavericks had discussions to seek clarity on what AD’s future is regarding whether or not the Mavericks would trade him or they would extend him. So in other words, in my opinion, that is Rich Paul telling the Mavericks either extend him or trade him. And if I’m the Mavericks, I say, “Well, screw you. We’re going to do what’s best for us. And if that means we’re keeping him this season and we trade him in the offseason, so be it. But there is no way the Mavericks can get roped into an Anthony Davis extension, that would be an absolute disastrous decision for the franchise, especially when he already has two years left and 50 plus million on his current deal. No way. No way for an extension. Some other names to monitor as far as Maverick’s trade rumors go. Of course, Daniel Gaffford who is on that uh he’ll be in the first year of his three-year 54 million extension next year. He is trade eligible right now despite signing that contract extension in the offseason. Clay Thompson, another name as well. He has two years and 16.7 million per season left. As well as D’Angelo Russell, who has a player option next year for 5.9 million. I do think it’s much more likely that any of these three guys actually get traded besides Anthony Davis. So, I would keep an eye on these three guys as potential uh teams and contenders look for upgrades at the 2026 NBA trade deadline. This is today’s poll question, though. Will there be more or less than one and a half trades for the Mavericks this season? If you think it’s M. If you think it’s more, type M. If you think it’s L, type less down there in the comments. I think I’m going to type my M’s for more. I could see the Mavericks trading the likes of Gaffford and Klay Thompson to two separate teams, but you guys let me know down there in the comment section here. The Mavericks believe they are turning a corner and they I think they want to see how things shake out. They are not going to be rushed into any decision regarding a trade even with the other three names we mentioned besides Anthony Davis. And there’s no real reason to rush. We sit here on December 11th, so we have seven weeks until the NBA trade deadline. that the Mavericks can wait at least another month before really deciding what direction they want to take the franchise for the rest of the season. So maybe if this team rattles off a nice little win streak and they go, let’s say in the next 15 games, let’s call it, let’s say they go 10 and five and they’re hovering right around 500, are they going to move an Anthony Davis? Would they be less inclined to move a Klay Thompson? I think you have to answer those questions if you’re Matt Ricardi and Michael Finley. So stay patient. The Mavericks, whatever they decide, will decide probably later in the mid to late January, especially when Kyrie Irving is closer to return as well. I’ll give you an update here as well on the team ratings where the Mavericks sit. The offense is still not good. It is 29th in the NBA at 108.6, but the defensive rating is top 10 at 112.3. And that number, both of these numbers have actually improved since since Anthony Davis returned to the lineup. Again, no one’s doubting AD’s talent and what he does on the basketball court. It’s all of the other stuff that absolutely would give me pause. But in the last 10 games though, the Mavericks offense has significantly improved to even right around league average, above league average at 13th in the NBA at 114.8. So, they are improving on the offensive end. It feels like they’re getting a little bit more rhythm. Oh, yeah, and by the way, what coincides with the Maverick’s improved offensive output? probably starting a point guard that has a clue what the hell he’s doing in Ryan Nemhard, who we’ll talk about here on the back end of today’s show. All right, the upcoming schedule for the Dallas Mavericks is as follows. Tomorrow against the Nets, and then on Monday, you have the Utah Jazz, then the Pistons, the 76ers, and the Pelicans. 3-2 at minimum is required in this stretch if we’re trying to seriously talk about winning games here. You have to beat the Brooklyn Nets who are abysmal. You have to beat the Utah Jazz who are abysmal. The Pel or the Pistons game will be a hard game to win because they’re a really good ball club, plain and simple. The 76ers are not a bad ball club either as they sit a couple games over 500 and they’re playing really well despite Joel Embiid being in and out of the lineup and basically being cooked and literally not being able to jump off of the floor. And then yes, the Pelicans are the worst team in the NBA. Every single game the Mavericks play against the Pelicans is close, including the one this year that they lost, which basically ended Nico Harrison’s tenure as general manager. You have to beat the Pelicans. There might be 500 people at that game. Like there I saw this the other day on Twitter. The Pelicans are literally giving away free tickets in the Lower Bowl. That is how bad that team is. If you don’t go into the Voodoo Palace, the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, and go beat them, you just have no chance to do anything this season whatsoever. So go three and two. Ideally go four and one, but all I’m asking for is three and two in this next fivegame stretch. And look, the difference maker for the Mavericks in this improved run of form, so to speak, is absolutely Ryan Nehard, the rookie undrafted free agent out of Gonzaga via Kraton. He has been the starting point guard for the last five, six games, and he has single-handedly made this Maverick’s offense watchable. He really has. Like I’ve loved how he has run the team, how he has just been super effective in getting guys, open looks, getting the team into the offense and pushing the pace. Ryan Nehard has been an absolute godsend for this team and his stats as a starter tell you that he’s playing really well. And this is a guy that teams did covet in the back end of the second round. But once Nemhard got into the mid to late 40s, he was more or less telling teams that he didn’t want to get drafted because the Mavericks already had a two-way contract offer for him on the table. Otherwise, he absolutely would have been drafted. But look, he’s averaging almost 15 points tonight, seven assists, and his shooting numbers are ungodly. I mean, there’s no way those shooting numbers continue to persist. But right now, he is scorching hot from the field and from three. And just hopefully it can continue, man. And hopefully Nemhard can, you know, stake a claim to be this team’s starting point guard for the rest of the season. And when Kai comes back, he can be that first guard off the bench. And the Mavericks may have found themselves a backup/starting capable point guard for the next 5 to 10 years, which is something you’d absolutely did not anticipate that you were getting in Ryan Nearden. Maybe I should have anticipated it cuz he did lead college basketball in assists last year and he was a four-year player at very good programs in Kraton and Gonzaga. So maybe that was on me. But shout out to Nembi, man. He is absolutely making waves and I love his nickname Nembi. We have Nembi who they say is 6 feet by the way. No chance. So we’re talking about like 5’11, 510 compared to Wemby who is 7’5. So I like the the Nembi and Wembi comparisons there as well. But at the end of the day, just win the games and the rest will figure itself out. If the Mavericks end up winning, they probably don’t trade all of their vets unless they find a deal they really like. If they end up losing a lot of these games, they probably have a fire sale. Everybody goes, they try to re restock those cupboards, restock those assets, and then go from there in the offseason when they hire a permanent time GM. I like the Mavericks winning basketball games. I don’t know about you guys, but it’s much more fun winning than losing, even if the team isn’t really going to make a push for the title this year. I’m I’ll tell you what, if you remember back in like Dennis Smith’s rookie year when they won 24 games and Luca’s rookie year when they won 32 games and then the year before that they won 32. It’s like it is just horrible watching losing basketball night in and night out. Hopefully this team can continue this turnaround, continue to bring the youthful energy with Ryan Nemhard and Cooper Flag and they can stay healthy and try to make a push for the playoffs and maybe try to even compete in a playoff series. That will do it for today’s show, guys. I appreciate you for tuning in to Mavericks Today by Chat Sports. Mavericks basketball back tomorrow. If anything happens against the Brooklyn Nets, we’ll have you covered right here on the channel. [Music]

PINNED COMMENT! More or less than 1.5 trades for the Mavs? M for More, L for Less
The Hawks are gonna have a Top 5 pick this year (via the Pelicans), so if the Mavs can get the Hawks 2026 1st round pick (15-20 range) & a 2028 pick, let's make it happen!! 🤔🤔
Why do we have to be in a hurry to trade AD? We have an interesting team that’s pretty good when they’re healthy. I want to see what they can do.
I’m sorry but these trades aren’t realistic. There is no way they would give us this much for AD 😑
M!! Please
AD has no passion and literally looks like a guy auditioning. Have mercy on Klay and just send him where he wants for whatever. Dude got sold a lie and didn't sign up for the Nico clown show. DLo for a bag of funyuns.
Why would we trade him for someone else garbage we don't want those trash packages! Coop you are ok by my standards but you know better than anyone unless it's Giannis it's not a good package! The Mavs already said they are going to see how this team gels ! No rush ! That Detroit package is trash
sold to the Pistons for Tobias Harris, Jaden Ivey and Duncan Robinson + 2 first round picks
extending AD is financial suicide due to AD history of injuries * AD will get over 75 mil when he reach 37 years old is insane
Jeffrey. What are we talking about?? Mavs Need AD. You're Stupid. AD has to play Center.
an extension for a injury prone AD would be crazy.
If they extend AD for 4/275, they better plan on holding onto him. Don't know how you justify this but not paying Luka.
M
Dallas defensive rating did not improve since ads return It went from 2 to 7th
Shut up… y’all so lame for talking about trading AD everyday smh. Shit is pathetic.
We got AD on contract Irving is coming back. No extension AD. Team is playing well last two weeks. Klay is shooting well. Flagg, Ryan, Christie, Williams, Paj, Gafford, Marshall keep em. So D'Angelo & Martin trade them for younger better value 3D wing. Liv unfortunately trade him ASAP. Cant stay healthy.
L unfortunately.
These fake fans are so ready to lose it ain't funny and then they will complain. Good thing Cuban has the common sense . COOPER and the mavs wanna see what Kyrie and AD first
When AD & Liv is healthy and on the court they are key contributors problem is Liv has never been healthy even back to his Duke days and everyone knows AD's track record. Dependability starts with Availability neither has the track record to believe in or build on for our future.
No ,I wouldn't trade ADAVIS AT ALL..JUST KEEP THE GUY..
