I remember his rookie year and knowing he was special from the beginning. I think we couldāve transitioned him from 1B to DH and Soto from RF to 1B in a few years. There was no reason to cheap out on him even if it wasnāt ideal. He was not the problem.

I think this one stings the most. Diaz, his mind was made up for reasons that the Mets couldnāt compete with. Pete, I donāt know man. He deserved better than he was treated. I know what I am saying is an emotional reaction and not a sound business decision, but baseball is also entertainment. Pete was a fan favorite. That should mean something in the larger picture. I think the Mets fumbled this one. Maybe Iāll be proven wrong and Iāll be the first to admit it, but I think this should have played out differently.
My son has been to Citi Field once. We flew from LA during spring break to see Peteās first home game in 2019. We rode the 7-line. We froze our asses off. Strasburg threw a gem to shut us out and beat Thor. Pete went 0-fer. It was a great day that the kid will never forget. He insists Pete hit one out. No need to correct him.
What a fucking force of nature this guy was.
This really makes me sad. Glad he took the time to say good bye.
