The Dallas Stars point streak, road point streak, and point streak against the Minnesota Wild finally comes to an end tonight as they fall in regulation to the Wild 5-2. They were thoroughly outplayed in Minnesota. We’ll touch on that. Mirror Hkin was spectacular. We are seeing Peak Miro right now. He needs a Norris trophy, but he did blast a one-time into Rope Hints at the end of regulation right in the foot. He was barely able to put any weight on it, if at all, and his injury looms. Hopefully, we have an update from Glenn Gooson a bit later on on today’s show. But let’s get in to this Stars defeat by the Wild on the road. They were thoroughly outplayed in this one. As I mentioned, off the hop, just not very good from the hop. They woke up late. They made a good push and surge, but it was entirely too late for the Stars to finally get to their game and find a rhythm a bit offensively. This was one that it felt like it was bound to happen. Some of the mistakes and some of their issues offensively have been a bit glossed over by the the power play. And this was a game that recently the Stars have just found ways to win. Uh this time they went up against a great Minnesota side who was excellent tonight. They deserve a ton of credit. They did not give Dallas much. And the Stars hung around right after two periods. It was it was tied at two. They were still right in the thick of things. They won the special teams battle. It felt like this was going to be another rendition of a Stars Wild affair where Dallas wins a special teams battle and they end up being on the the right side of the final score. Uh unfortunately that was not not the case as the the Wild really buckled down defensively. Uh Gustiffson was great in between the pipes for Minnesota and it was just a matter of time it felt like for for Minnesota finally to punch through. They outshot the Stars 32-8. Dallas was really bad at five on five. They were just not good. Out chance 27 to2 high danger chances 13 to five in favor of Minnesota. shots on goal 27 to 12 in favor of the Wild. The the Wild were just clearly the better team I in the game. I don’t think the Stars had a shot in the first nine minutes and this has been in their DNA at points this season. We’ve seen them get off to really sluggish starts recently. it’s been the case, but their power play has been able to mask some of the stench at five on five and it just felt like they were never able to stack shifts together. Every once in a while, they would have a shift. Uh Oscar Beck, I thought, had a great game. His line had some moments. Rantin’s line, too. Each each line had some some decent zone time at points, but it just wasn’t elongated and they weren’t able to funnel enough pucks on Gustoson um and test him to tonight. The power play came up big again. It was the only opportunity they got. They probably deserved maybe one or two more calls the rest of the way, but nothing to complain about here. They they didn’t deserve to win the game and the score I think was apppropo for how the the Stars played. But they do get a short-handed goal from Miro Hkinan, the first of the season. We’ll discuss him a bit later, but that was a massive tally. What I think really hurt the Stars was the goal that made it 3-1, which was taken off the board. Stars following the short-handed goal, following getting through that kill, can’t remember exactly the time. I want to say maybe three, four minutes later, Wyatt Johnston scored to make it 3-1, which we thought maybe the dagger in a lot of ways just because maybe that takes the wind out of Minnesota’s sales. They they’re playing great and then all of a sudden they’re trailing by two sort of halfway through the game. Unfortunately, it was offside. It was a great call by Minnesota. It wasn’t very close. it uh was was an easy call to make and it just felt like that sort of took some of the momentum away from Dallas because after Miro’s short-handed goal, it it gave Dallas some of that momentum after Minnesota was really leaning on them for the first half of the game and that that third goal maybe the floodgates open for Dallas. Who knows? because that just completely puts the game to a halt on the wild side of things you’re up to and and maybe Minnesota fights their way back. Who who knows? It’s all ifs and buts at this point. But I I think that really hurt. It was it was one of the pretty uh entries and pretty plays Dallas had that actually ended up with a shot on goal in the game. And to have it taken away, I I think really hurt. I believe Minnesota had a goal taken away in the in the home opener for Dallas if if I’m not mistaken. I think maybe they had one taken away. Maybe it was it was last season, but um in m in Dallas ended up winning. Um that that certainly stung. Um it was one of their what four shots on goal in the second period and a after that Minnesota deservedly so just went to work. stars in in the in their offensive zone or the defensive zone coverage just wasn’t very good. Um they lost a couple faceoffs and uh but Gojan blasted one and then of course that was a sick play by Matt Baldy. The little saucer pass to uh to Marcus Johansson who Otter I thought was going to make the save. He he got over there. He he was great tonight man. He he was excellent. the only reason the Stars were in the game for the first 40 minutes of this one, but uh they weren’t able to get it done. He deserved better in the contest. Uh Dallas just was um a bit sluggish. They just were behind, right? It felt like they were slow at at points and and Minnesota was certainly the faster team. They were were were playing together. There was a lot of support there. Uh and Dallas um was was hanging around as they usually do, but it finally caught up to him and yeah, you get outshot 27 to 12 at five on five. You’re you’re not going to win a ton of hockey games doing that. And uh the Wild deservedly got the the win. Although the power play comes through huge. If they get a couple more power plays, may maybe it’s a different result. The PK was excellent. That’s a positive. They’ve now killed was it 33? They made 34 uh penalty uh power plays in a row. That is the in most in franchise history. They were great. Um they got some help from a uh from a post and spectacular saves from from Otter. Uh but the third one in particular the stars end up scoring on and uh the the uh uh PK was just uh was was just excellent. So so stout and um it was it was good stuff. It was a good push late too. The Stars had some had some chances. They they finally woke up, but they didn’t wake up until Minnesota took a lead for the first time when it was 3-2 after Johansson’s goal. And then finally, the Stars wanted to to play um and and and start kind of forcing the issue. Then they had Minnesota on their heels, but they didn’t start out that way. Uh they were out hit 26 to 12. That’s two strike games. Stars were heavily out hit. Uh they uh had had some giveaways. uh 13 to 17. Minnesota actually had more giveaways. Uh the Wild blocked a ton of shots. Wild team’s good, man. Um and I think a lot of uh a lot of people expected them to be good, including my including myself. Um they’re dealing with injuries, too. Of course, the the stars are every team is the schedule’s condensed. And uh this was a game that felt like it was probably coming uh for for Dallas. They just they had gotten away with way too much. Um, and look, it’s it’s it’s nice that you’re able to win when you’re not at your best. Sometimes you have to do that in the regular season. You just need to gain points, right? Just acquire points. Um, it’s fascinating when you look at the the Western Conference. The Stars have such a cushion right now, which I think is really positive because some point there’s going to be a bad slump. Um, it happens every season. Uh, the second wild card’s 32 points, which is Chicago right now, and and Dallas is 47 points. They have so much so much cushion um and room for error a bit. U not saying you want to go ahead and lose five in a row or or whatnot and and and go down the tank, but they have been so good on the road. Just their second regulation loss since early I think late October like game five of the season. Um that’s the type of run they’ve been on and um they just weren’t able to to pull themselves out out of this one trailing and they fall 5-2. 15game point streak against Minnesota. They’ve just been a bugaboo team and uh that has to feel like a a playoff win for Minnesota in some ways. That that’s not a knock. I’m um if you know the Stars have some bugaboo teams uh right too. They just they can’t find a way to win. It feels like at points those those ones feel massive. um and maybe does some good for uh for Minnesota who’s been I mean just on fire. One of the best teams in the NHL over the last uh month or so. Let’s discuss another positive though. Mir Hayeskin and what a performance he had. Sprinkle a little Jakeer in there because he deserves some love as uh the stars fall. But Mir Hayeskin has to win a Norris trophy this year. If it doesn’t come this year, I don’t know what else you need from him. Let’s discuss that in just a moment. Today’s episode of Locked on Stars is brought to you by FanDuel. You look at the hockey stat cards, which I always enjoy doing. There was not a Dallas star until Jay Goter and it’s it’s it’s just wild logos from really the first half of the page up. Jay Goter just splits up splits up the heavy do uh dosage uh of wild individuals. Mero Hin was I I thought phenomenal tonight. He didn’t grade out very well. A minus so.14 in the hockey stat cards, but I think that is one where maybe some of the uh advanced numbers don’t tell the the whole story. He he was remarkable. Some of the plays he made was just all over the all over the place. Uh was excellent defensively. Got sticks in lanes on the PK. Of course, he he drove a lot of the offense tonight. What a what a blast he had on the uh on the short-handed goal through traffic. Uh one Gustoson would have probably liked to to have back, but he picks up another assist on the power play to to Jason Robertson. So a two-point night from him. He is just giving you everything you could want and in in a in a year. Um, and at some point it has to be noticed from the Norse Trophy voters. It it has to be done. Razer brought it up. I I don’t know what else you could want at this point with what he’s doing. The minutes he’s playing, the minutes he’s accumulating on the power play on the PK at five on five. Of course, he’s always going to play against the other teams opposition’s best players. Um and for the most part um he did good uh did very good job at that. I mean Capri off had one assist I mean was on the point or was uh on the stat sheet once tonight. Blabbermouth over here uh but it was on empty net goal uh for for for Baldi. Um I thought did a pretty decent job of of shutting down um the the rushing line uh for for Minnesota which which had some looks. He uh he is just he is in peak form. We’ve never seen him this good. Uh the play he made on the one penalty kill just kind of reaching back. I think it was Capriop just sort of sweeps it, takes it away um and clears. The offensive numbers are are there too. That is massive. Look, he’s going to have to get somewhere between 65 to 75 points, you think, to even be in the conversation. That’s just the way the award goes. He he’s he’s on pace to kind of keep up with his career high which was 73 points a few years ago. A lot of his points during that year came on the power play. Um that is the uh the sort of the same trajectory uh we’re getting right now. Um had three blocks, had a ton of shot attempts. Uh unfortunately he had such a tasty look at six on five and he blasted it into to Ro’s um leg. I I don’t think it was it was going in. He had a couple of those looks. The one earlier Rantin set him up, but the puck was rolling. If if he gets one of those two on net, uh may maybe uh maybe the Stars are able to to to steal a point, but it is just night in and and night out. He got off to a slow start, admittedly. So, I was I was a bit on his tail about the uh the start for for him. And he has just turned it up another notch. And look, I I know I I watch it night in and night out, but he is is playing the best hockey of his career. I think he has to be the best defenseman in the NHL right now. Uh, of course, Mar is going to Mar’s going to have what, over 80 points per usual. Um, he he does that. I I get it. But you want the whole package. You want it a number four. I’ll I’ll take that every single day of the week. spoiled to watch a future great in in in this position um in in victory. Green unfortunately uh I thought which was a really strong night for him comes um in a loss to to Minnesota. Um and behind him Jakeer was man he he was so good. uh he he hadn’t lost I don’t think in regulation to to Minnesota in his career or maybe just a couple times as I think the wad got a couple of playoff wins against him but man he was sharp and and he had to be he did all he could to to keep his side in even a couple of the goals or ones man you’d like to have back but um he picked up the begoian shot way late um by the time it was there it was it was it was over his shoulder it was a well played shot by Begoian too the Erikson ek gole in the first period, the tang goal um at one. I don’t know what Harley was was doing on man. He’s he has just had a rough go of it. Um and again, he’s a couple days removed from coming back from injury. So, going to give him a grace period like a week, two weeks, and then I’ll get on the Harley criticism trail. He he was he was not good uh tonight. Uh made some curious decisions um and and just yeah, struggled. him and Petravic uh were the worst graded defenseman for for Dallas. So uh they need him to to find form um again because they they need his help. Uh Kachonuk jumped in which was an interesting uh decision. Maybe we can talk about some of the lineup decisions um in in in the next uh segment, but um uh that that was that was curious um just to see him. Not that he played bad, but uh Lungquist was was uh sick, so I guess I wasn’t too curious, but Um it was it was nice to see Kio Chon get back. You know, I thought had a strong game, too. Kyle Capo Bienko. Um he he he gave Dallas something in a in a night where they didn’t have much. He he was he was slippery. He was trying to to generate some some scoring for for Dallas. Um I feel like we talk about him every every show now about what he’s been able to provide for the Stars. So, thought he had a really really strong uh strong uh strong night for for the Stars defensively. Uh but but Miro is carrying a a heavy load and uh what what a night for him and I think this is one of those performances even though the stars kind of got manhandled a little bit. You could you could ask voters to watch this. Yeah, that that was good. He played over 26 minutes. Uh when he was on the ice, they were outshot 8 to6 though. like that’s not really normal for for a for a for Amira Hasten Knight. I know that doesn’t uh look all that great some of the um advanced numbers. Um and he was on the ice for a couple of the empty net goals which uh never hurts or always hurts of course but um man he he was excellent. uh can’t can’t say enough and we’re going to continue to highlight him and we are going to be uh the the main uh show here the locked on stars Miro Hastin and Norris trophy bandwagon we will just continue to continue to pump it with full of air um until it’s noticed which I I’m sure it is. Um but um we got to look at the positives here for Dallas. Can’t can’t win them all. uh their uh their their rough hockey kind of uh looseness, leakiness uh style of the last week or so finally caught up to them as uh they fall to uh the wild. Uh Rope Hence, my goodness, can the Stars catch a break? This could be awful. Hopefully not. Let’s see if we have an update from Glenn Gooson, which I think we do, but it may be an update that is not an update. And now, an injury that looms large to a guy that’s been really good this year, too. We’ll discuss that in just a moment. Today’s episode of Lockdown Stars is brought to you by Monarch Money. There is a morning skate uh tomorrow and uh they will uh know more and hopefully have more information on what we can expect. But it it did not look great. He needed help from Ben Robertson a couple of refs to to get up. Um, it was hammered. Sam Nestler mentioned here on on X, the puck actually misses the left boot and hits the inside part of his right boot. He does not put any weight on that right foot while being helped off. Uh, that also, he makes a good point, is not the same foot he broke in the playoffs last spring. Unfortunately, the inside of the state is probably the the worst. I guess it’s not really a good place to get hit no matter what. Sometimes uh you can’t do anything um about it. But that inside one obviously stung, man. He needed a lot of help to get down the tunnel, too. And it it’s just a another blow that frankly the Stars can’t can’t take right now. um since they’re finally getting a bit healthy. Their offense has been okay, especially on the power play, but at five on five, they need a player like Roance and has some speed. He’s a been a point per game uh this season. Um I thought his line finally has got some rhythm and chemistry going with Robertson and Ben. That’s just a line they’ve kind of put together since Ben’s return. And now it looks like Rope may be down and they’re just going to have to to chug along. It It does not look good. I’m not going to sit here and try to play doctor. Uh the Bishell injury I thought was going to be worse than Sean’s and it was actually the opposite after you look at the reactions. Sean’s pretty much done for the entire regular season. Bishial’s going to be back um at some point. So uh it’s hard to just read based off reactions. Robe unfortunately has just a history of of these types of things and and and injuries. Um just really annoying more than anything that it comes at this point. Um and it comes off a you know a shot of his his own teammate. Uh which certainly uh doesn’t help the cause. But I just I I I don’t know how much more the Stars can go to the well and can continue to deal with these types of of losses. They haven’t suffered, if anything, they haven’t suffered losses to some of their best guys, which has been a blessing, right? They they haven’t missed any of the trio of of of Mo, Johnston, or Robo, which has been good. Duchies in their top six of course um and Ben, but the the guys that are really doing the brunt of the scoring they haven’t missed. Um this may be the first one they kind of kind of lose and hence although Sean’s had a good year, right? 17 points in 27 games isn’t anything to to scoff at, but you’re talking about the the guys the stars have to rely on. Well, they’re getting the the job done. So, that’s still intact, but it just throws everything out of sorts. That’s the I think more the more concerning part uh for me. It’s just the constant line juggling. You know, they moved Desaine up with Rantin in a bit. Um and Johnston, we’ve seen Steel there. Steel just has such a hard time buying goals. He does so many good things but just cannot score. Um it has been an unlucky finishing year for for him. He he should have a at least a dozen by by uh by this time with some of the looks he’s had. He just he can’t buy one. He’s he’s only got four um on the year. Uh man, if he can start to finish some of his his looks um that would be nice. I mean, the Stars are are going to need it. Um and and the the power play has glossed over some of their um issues at five on five. And there was a stretch where the Stars were actually playing extremely well. play route shooting teams. Um the power play was just help uh really just expand on on on that. Uh but lately it feels like okay, tread water, tread water, five on five, you draw a call um and you’ll make them pay. Uh because there’s just so much talent um on the sheet. Uh so they’re going to have to work through some of that. They gota they got to get get to a game, right? Find their game. We haven’t seen that. that’s sort of the uh the issue. It doesn’t feel like Dallas is is getting to their game. Um but although they, you know, they’re just finding ways to to win and you can applaud teams for that, but sometimes it is how you win. I I understand that. Um uh and come playoff time, it’s like whatever, just get it done. Uh but there always is a little bit of that, okay, how how are you winning? are you really dominating teams or is it like you know Dallas against Pittsburgh the other night where they just kind of hung on and then they get a six on five goal they went in a shootout or Winnipeg where there’s pockets and stretches like they had a nice comfortable lead um but not like they were just giving it to um to Winnipeg but I think you take some of the good some of the bad with a grain of salt of course those are two tough buildings to play on or to play in Minnesota and Winnipeg. Uh Minnesota’s been playing well. Uh Winnipeg’s struggle, but they gave you a good a good game. Like they’re they’re division games. Those are are never walks um in the park in the park. And I think Dallas with the schedule they’ve been on um is I think like they’ve taken I think it was 26 out of 30 points over the the last whatever so many games 15 games. That’s that’s that’s impressive stuff. Uh this this this is bound to happen. They do look tired. Uh it didn’t seem to have didn’t seem to have much much legs um in this one. It’ll be nice to to get home. Florida hasn’t been great. They’re getting shellacked right now by Colorado. It’s five to one um after two. Colorado is just an absolute wagon. So uh a Florida team that um is is is a team you can get after as it seems it seems tonight. So, a chance to bounce back at at home. It is just a lot of AAC on the road. AAC just little blips and back. So, I I think but you know, every team’s dealing with that. It’s the Olympic year. It It’s just these games are compact, so you can’t really make excuses. Um, and Dallas hasn’t. Um, they have just blown through a lot of this tough stretch. Um, they’ve done it in flying colors. Um, and and hopefully they can get back on track over the the weekend. Uh but um all I think there was some good in there. I I’m I’m trying to take some of the the good out. Robo continues to score. He’s up to 20 goals on the season. Mirror had a great game. Otter was Otter was sharp and you know kept kept Dallas in it. Um the the hints one is a stinging blow. Hopefully hopefully just one that really crippled him and it will be good to go. Um and maybe his his foot will just be swollen but nothing else. Um, a broken foot would just be an awful, awful thing to read um, in the next couple of days.
