MUST SIGN: Why the Philadelphia Phillies Should LOCK IN J.T. Realmuto Now and Avoid REGRET
The Philadelphia Phillies are closing in on a deal to bring back star catcher JT Ralmudo. Find out how close the two sides are on today’s episode. [Music] You are Locked on Phillies, your daily Philadelphia Phillies podcast, part of the Locked on Podcast Network. Your team every day. Yes, this is Locked on Phillies. I’m your host Connor Thomas. Thank you so much for joining us today. We come to you as part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day and now the number one sports podcast network. Locked on Phillies, your number one place for daily Philadelphia Phillies content. You might know me from some of my other work in the sports talk space. I’ve been on air over at 97 Fly the Fanatic doing sports talk radio here in Philadelphia for over six years. I’ve been a credentialed Philadelphia Phillies media member for the past four seasons and this is now my fourth year as the host of Locked on Phillies. Today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. If you want to be right in the middle of the action this season, visit fanal.com and place your NFL live bets all season long. The Phillies are closing in on a deal for JT Realm Mudo. How close are we to seeing the star catcher return to Philadelphia? There’s a lot of people talking about it right now. I’ll tell you all the latest and how close I think they are. Then we’re going to talk about a Philly’s rule five draft selection. They don’t normally make picks in the rule five draft. There’s a reason why they added a player that could be a part of the major league bullpen as early as this coming season. We’ll talk about that and then we’re going to wrap up with a look at a division rival that we haven’t talked about much lately. How worried should we be about the Atlanta Braves after they make a deal to bring in reliever Robert Suarez? A lot of stuff to get into on today’s episode and let’s start with the catcher. So Kyle Schwarber gets locked down to a five-year $150 million contract. And in his first media availability, did a little Zoom interview with Assembled Media. One of the things he talked about is how he pretty much immediately sent a text to JT Ramutoo saying, “Yo, yo, buddy, it’d be nice to have you back here as well.” Essentially, that’s what Schwarber said. Now, he did say he wanted to be respectful of the process, so he didn’t like badger him or anything, but clearly Kyle Schwarber wants JT to be back on this team. That’s not surprising. I mean, JT is very wellliked in the locker room. He is a leadership presence. He is a talented ball player, even though he is on the significantly older side for a starting catcher in Major League Baseball. and he feels like a important part of what this team has been over the past couple of seasons. So, I’m not surprised that Kyle Schwarber’s like, “Yo, I signed back here. Why don’t you sign back here?” That’s the right way to handle it if you’re Kyle Schwarber. Now, wanting your teammate back and the organization deciding, hey, we want to pay this guy are two totally different things. I know there’s a good sect of the fan base that’s like the OPS was down significantly this past year. He’s not really showcasing the pop at the plate anymore. He had a great bounce back in the second half of the season in 2025, but his first half was brutal. Uh he hit into like a billion double plays and you could just see JT slowly aging out of the star player that he was for a majority of his time here in Philadelphia. But there’s not a good option waiting in the wings. So, the Phillies are still very, very interested in bringing him back. We had Jason Stark on the station over at 975, the Fanatic on our afternoon show, unfiltered, and he basically said he expects the Phillies and Real Mudo to get a deal done. The expectation is he will come back to Philadelphia. And with Schwarber wrapped up, it seems that the next order of business is indeed focused on Real Mudo. Jim Salisbury, who does great work, he’s just like a longtime great voice on the Phillies, and he is right way more often than he’s wrong. He was on foul territory earlier this week. And he said he believes the Phillies have an offer out to Real Mudo. And this will be good no uh good news to folks out there. He believes it’s probably a 2year offer. That is the sweet spot. As much as Kyle Schwarber was sign him at any expense, any years, just make it happen. Because at this point, if the market’s there and Baltimore offered him five for 150, so the market was there. You had to do whatever you can do to bring back Kyle Schwarber. JT’s not in that class. If somebody outbids you, the Phillies will let him walk. If someone throws three years and a bunch of money at JT Ramito because they believe he can be a huge asset to their organization and they’re catcher deficient, I don’t believe the Phillies are going to match any offer on JT the way they were willing to match any offer on Kyle Schwarber. But if they’re able to get this deal done at two years, that is an incredible win for the Philadelphia Phillies front office. anything more than that and we get into sketchy territory. There’s not I know people think I’m just like sign everybody, bring everyone back. I love all these players. Not at all. I’m just trying to be logical with what the Phillies need. They needed Schwarber. Like needed. Now I lean towards kind of needing JT, pretty much needing JT, but not to the point where he gets a blank check from the organization. So, it sounds like they’re close. And if the offer truly is a two-year deal and they’re close on that, that means the market on JT is not pushing the Phillies bid up. And that would be an absolute win. The fan base, I’m telling you right now, should be 100% in on bringing back JT Ramutoo on a two-year deal. That doesn’t hurt this team at all. three years. Huge difference because that would keep him here to his age 38 season, which for Kyle Schwarber is one thing. DH every day, bat speeds still look awesome. Like he’s got a much more projectable uh ability to hit in his prime. Being the DH that he is, JT, his projections are on the downs slope. Still productive, but two years is where you want to be. So, my hope is that J2 Real Mudo that contract will be signed next week or so. You know, here’s what we’ll do. I would be surprised if Real Mudo, I’m going to give him the same conservative timeline as I gave Kyle Schwarber. JT Ramutoo will be on a team by the end of December. Right now, we’re sitting here and what is the date? I don’t know. The days all run together in the holiday season. It’s December 12th as I’m recording this. JT is going to be signed by the end of December and I firmly believe he will once again be a Philadelphia Philly. And here’s why it’s so important that the Phils get this done. Who is your starting catcher if JT Ramudo is not on this team? If you liked Harry Ford from Seattle, he already got moved this off season. He’s no longer available. I mean, you’re not going to want to trade prospects when you’re trying to bring the next generation of players up. Also, if you want to move Alec Bow, if you want to move Nick Castianos, if you want to move Bryson or Brandon Marsh or Matt Strong, maybe even Orion Kirking, do you really want to give up prospects to replace a catcher when you can resign a guy that’s been such an important part of this organization? Waste is not a good strategy for a team like the Philadelphia Phillies right now who don’t have the deepest farm system. And trading for another catcher rather than resigning JT Ramutoo would be a waste of resources. That’s why I think it’s so important that JT comes back. Unless you’re the world’s biggest Raphaian Marshon or Garrett Stubs fans and think that those two guys would be able to handle the everyday catching responsibilities for the Phillies. Now, it wouldn’t be each of them every day. It would be a tandem of the two. So, like a platoon, I’d imagine, but still, do you feel good about every game of 162 being either Raphael Marshon or Garrett Stubs? Those guys have proven to be complete non-factors offensively. Both have their defensive merits, but the Phillies just don’t have a better option. And sometimes being stuck in that spot will lead to you having to overpay based on JT’s worth. But if you can get him at a two-year deal, I do not remotely think that’s an overpay. I think that’s more of a no-brainer. You just got to sell him. Now, I think Kyle Schwarber coming back to Philadelphia is a big selling point for a guy like JT Ramudo who says, “Okay, well, if Schwarbs is willing to commit back for five years and the Phillies are still throwing money out there and clearly they’ll they’re still interested in trying to win. I trust this locker room and I trust this organization. I’m not saying hometown discount for JT, but I also don’t think he’s going to like hold their feet to the fire when it comes to the deal he’s looking for.” So, cross your fingers and hope that no team bids this up to three years. And imagine that JT Ramudo is back by the end of December at the latest, but heck, it could be by the end of next week. We are very close to a deal getting done in some capacity for JT Ramudo. And that shows you, okay, here’s the clear hierarchy, as we’ve been saying all off season, of what the Phillies needs are. It was Schwarber one. It’s Real Mudo 2. And then it’s time for Dave Dumbrosseski to get really creative as far as what he’s doing with the bullpen, the outfield, trading away current players, acquiring others via trade. A lot of the fun not running it back stuff can happen once you figure out the JT portion. The Schwarber deal was the big one. JT is now the the side dish, I suppose. And after you figure out what’s going on with him, then Dave Drowski starts to hopefully get in his bag a little bit. Or he could bring in another Max Kepler and we could all be ticked off. But at least let’s get to that point of the offseason as soon as possible so there’s as many players still left out on the market for the Phillies to potentially find a diamond in the rough. Speaking of diamonds in the rough, did the Phillies just find one in the rule five draft? They stole a minor league pitcher from the Miami Marlins organization. And there is one clear spot for this guy to fit in with the Phillies major league team. I’ll tell you why you could have just found a brand new bullpen arm for the 2026 season. As we continue today’s episode, let’s talk about game time first, though, because the World Cup is coming back to North America for the first time since 1994. And with 48 teams for the first time ever, it’s going to be massive. But let’s be honest, getting tickets is usually the hardest part. That’s why the Game Time app is super clutch. Finally giving fans a real advantage when it comes to snagging seats. With Game Time, you can track price drops in real time. So, if you have a specific budget for how much you’re willing to spend, you can check that in the app and say, “Okay, here are my notifications when the price drops below that mark.” You can get alerts when great seats open. So, you’re first to the table trying to buy those new available tickets. And you can buy tickets the moment they hit the app. Just like I’m saying, first, best deal. What more could you want? with game time. They’re the absolute best, right? And it puts the power back in your hands and makes going to the World Cup realistic instead of impossible. It is a once- ina lifetime sports experience. Let’s just talk about the games in Philadelphia. France will be playing here in Philadelphia. Killian Mbappe, one of the best sides in the world, one of the best players in the world. Brazil will be playing in Philadelphia. another titan of the football world. And you’ve got a chance to find tickets to those games at the best possible price if you use Game Time. And if you’re listening, I’d love if you could rate and review Locked On Phillies wherever you get your podcast. We’ve had thousands of people already lock in on locked on Phillies. I’d love for you to join the club and I’m very happy that the Phillies made a new addition of a player joining their club or at least their system. So, the rule five draft and this is something that I forgot to mention last time. Somebody pointed this out in the YouTube comments. I’m sorry I don’t have it in front of me. But the other thing, the player needs to remain on the 40man roster for the entirety of the next season. So, it’s a great point that somebody brought up. That’s another reason why there’s a lot of commitment to these players. You have to place them immediately on the 40man and they have to remain with the team for the next year. So, if you’re drafting someone in the rule five draft, you’re saying, “We’re very committed to adding this player to our organization, thinking they can make an impact at the major league level sometime in the next 365 days.” And the Phillies lost Griff McGary to the Washington Nationals. But there was a lot of NL East on NL East crime in the rule five draft as the Phils go out and select Zack McCley. Now, I know no one’s got any clue who Zack McCambley is unless you saw this news break a couple days ago and got into who he is as far as a Marlins prospect. Here’s what he’s done so far in his time with the Miami Marlins or really just looking at this past year. So, he’s 26, which I’ve told you minor leaguers 26, 27, 28. I mean, that’s that’s not really a good zone to live in. Griff McGary’s 26. I said that might be a little bit late for seeing someone develop, but if you expect someone to throw out of the bullpen and have more longevity to their career with less innings year-over-year at the major league level, 26 is not a bad spot to be. McCy spent 2025 with AAA Jacksonville and double A Pensacola split time between those two levels of the Miami Marlins system. And his numbers looked pretty darn good. So, he threw 62 innings pitched, 20 earned runs to a 2.9 ERA. So, the ERA is in a really good spot. Here’s something I really like. 83 strikeouts in 62 innings worth of work. 22 walks. Probably cut that number down a little bit, but 35 of his 47 appearances were scoreless. He pitched more than one inning in 20 games this season. So, he’s not just a guy that you need to throw one inning. You know what that screams to me? Here is a middle of the bullpen right-handed reliever. And the Phillies need more right-handed bullpen help. I’m not here to tell you he’s going to be like their high leverage righty outside of Joan Don, but you have openings in the bullpen. I’d still like to see the Phillies be more aggressive at signing proven major league arms. But who in this system is a trusted bullpen arm at the minor league level? We haven’t really seen them be able to call up guys that have given them help at the major league level over the past couple of seasons. The Michael Marcados, the Daniel Robert, like there’s just not enough talent reliever-wise in the Phillies minor league system right now. It’s a deficiency of theirs and that was a weak spot of last year’s team because as Jordan Romano and Joe Ross struggled. They didn’t have an answer where they say, “Okay, we’re going to bring up this guy and pop him in the major league bullpen and he’s going to be able to give us couple weeks worth of strong work until we figure out a longer term solution or heck, you call somebody up who can be here for the long term.” The last time the Phillies called up a reliever that actually had long-term viability was two seasons ago when they called up Orion Kirking. And now we see obviously Kirking has not panned out to the way that we believed he could have based on the arm talent. But I mean since that they they haven’t really brought up like a true prospect. Tanner Banks had had major league experience before. He was a nice find. Jose Ruiz had had major league experience before. He was a nice find even though he completely fell off the pl uh face of the planet this year. But we’re talking about a guy that could actually be a development piece in the bullpen. And the Phillies using a 40man roster spot and selecting this guy in the rule five draft just tells you they know that they’re weak at right-handed reliever in the major league or fringe major league portion of their roster. So, I think this is a beautiful job of addressing it. Does it work out? I don’t know. I’ve I’ve never seen the guy pitch. I’m not zoned in on Jacksonville or Pensacola in the AAA or double A rank. So, I’d be lying to you if I said I watched a lot of tape over the past couple years on Zack McClin. But what I do know is it’s a need for the Phillies at that position. They felt strong enough to use a 40man roster spot on that player. And now you have a little bit more depth. And these are the moves that don’t get a lot of fanfare in December that could make a big difference in June, July, August, September. And well, we’ll just leave it there. We’ll get to October when we get to October because God knows the Phillies track record in October over the past couple of seasons has not made any kind of sense whatsoever. And it’s not anything that we can bank on. But I like the move. And it also points towards the Phillies focus which is so far this off seasonason right where it should be. But when we focus on rivals, are we looking at the right teams? The Atlanta Braves made a really intriguing move this week. And I wonder, have we been overlooking Atlanta after a couple of down seasons? They’re going to be right back in the mix in the National League East this coming season and their bullpen’s going to be something to be reckoned with. We’ll talk about the Robert Suarez acquisition and what it means for the NL East as we continue today’s episode. Let’s talk about FanDuel first though because NFL Sundays move fast. One big play and suddenly everything feels different. That’s what makes live betting with FanDuel so exciting. You’re not just watching the game, you’re reacting to it in real time. With FanDuel, you can place bets as the action unfolds. Every drive, every momentum swing, every highlight moment. Live betting is best when the game starts to shift, a receiver gets hot, a defense tightens up, or the momentum flips after a turnover. FanDuel lets you jump into the moment. Here’s a perfect example of why live betting is so helpful and why FanDuel is the best. because they’ve got such a sleek, easy to use interface that you can jump in at any point in the game. So, for example, the Eagles are 11 and a half point favorites against the Las Vegas Raiders at Lincoln Financial Field this weekend. Could you imagine betting the Eagles to cover a double-digit spread right now with the way they’ve been playing? They’ve lost three straight. They stink right now. But let’s say Vegas goes out and scores the first touchdown of the game and the live line drops down significantly and you still believe the Eagles are going to win the game by a touchdown. Then you could take advantage of a more beneficial line, get a feel of the game first, see if the Eagles actually have their stuff together, which God knows they probably won’t. But you can jump in and you don’t have to worry about that big number that was posted before the game. props, parlays, spread, money line, overunder, all of these are available midgame betting live with FanDuel. It’s the absolute best. The payouts are quick and safe and easy. So, if you want to be right in the middle of the action this season, visit fanal.com and place your NFL live bets all season long. FanDuel, the game moves fast and so can you. Have we forgotten about the Atlanta Braves? It seems silly because the past two seasons they have completely imploded. So the gut feeling is well we’re focused on the Mets and we’re thinking about the Dodgers and maybe some of the other teams out west. I guess the Central is getting a little bit better. Chicago, Milwaukee, Cincinnati, and all of a sudden you start to take a peek at the Atlanta Braves and go, “Huh, did we write them off too soon? this core that they have. Have the injuries been an anomaly over the past couple of seasons? I guess by definition, two years in a row wouldn’t make something an anomaly, but if they’re healthy for a year, they’re a very dangerous team. And their bullpen just got a major major boost. So, they went out and they signed Robert Suarez to a three-year $45 million deal. Suarez, formerly of the Padres’s, a great back end of the bullpen arm. They might use him as a closer. They have a couple of guys who have closing experience and they have some of the best backend bullpen arms in the division. And you look at their lineup and you’re like, “Okay, Matt Olsen, Ronald Akunia, all of these star players that have had either down years or injuryheavy years. They have a strong rotation with guys healthy. Sale, Strider, Schwelenbach. They have talent. They just haven’t been able to keep that talent on the field. And if I’m looking at the Atlanta Braves right now, I go, “Well, what are the chances that they’re decimated by injuries for a third straight season? It just doesn’t seem likely.” It’s easy to look at the past couple of years and say, “Well, the Atlanta Braves, this core, their time has passed them by, but look at some of the ages of these players. It’s not like they’re trottting out an old folks home lineup. They still got talented players very much in the prime of their career. And if they are healthy, they’re as dangerous of a team as anybody in the NL East. Now, the Phillies have won back-to-back NL East division titles. They’re going to be the favorite heading into this season. I have to imagine. I don’t think there’s any way that bookmakers would be able to put the Braves or the Mets as favorites above the Phillies unless something goes really haywire this off season. But I’d imagine the Braves are going to be second in the divisional odds. The Mets after losing Pete Alonzo and Edwin Diaz would probably fall to third. It’s not a heavily distant third, but if you’re sitting here saying, “Okay, well, it’s a two-team race and Pete Alonzo and Edwin Diaz leaving the Mets means that they’re probably going to take a step back.” And they already had the collapse and they kept Carlos Mendoza, their manager, who oversaw that collapse, which to me seems like a silly move. And I think Mets fans are probably not that thrilled about him not losing his job. and you say, “Okay, the Phils have a pretty clear path to repeating as NL East champions.” I said that just on another episode this week. And then the Braves go out and make that move. How worried should we be? I’d love to hear your comments on the YouTube feed about how worried you would be about the Atlanta Braves heading into this season as we sit here today with them beefing up the bullpen and getting healthy and potentially putting together a season where they have all their guys available. In fact, we’re going to have an offthe- poll question for you as to the biggest contender in the National League outside of the Dodgers because everyone would pick the Dodgers that the Phillies should be worried about. The Braves are going to be one of them. The Mets are going to be one of them. I’m going to throw in the Milwaukee Brewers. And then we’ll also probably just throw in either the San Diego Padres’s or the Chicago Cubs. I think with the Cubs losing Kyle Tucker this off seasonason, which they’re not going to resign him, I I’ll probably throw the Padres’s in there over the Cubs, but I’ll be really intrigued to see where the votes come down on that. Who are you watching as the true players in the National League playoff picture as we sit here in the middle of December? Something else that this move indicates though, outside of just Atlanta, the run on relievers is happening. Just this week, we saw Robert Suarez go to Atlanta on a three-year $45 million deal. We saw Edwin Diaz go to the Dodgers on a big-time deal. We’ve seen a lot of players move around as far as backend bullpen arms are concerned, and the Phillies have been quiet. Now, you have Joan Don, you have José Alvarado, you still have Matt Strom. So, you have some high leverage guys whose numbers would tell you they’ve been pretty darn good over the past couple of seasons. I know how people feel about Strom. I know how people feel about Alvarado. I know that there are some people that are a little sketched out by Don and started to give up runs and outings near the end of the season and in the postseason. But at the end of the day, the talent level in the back end of the Phillies bullpen. It’s in it’s in the upper half of Major League Baseball at the very very least. I might put it in the upper third. I’d have to look around and see where everyone else stands with their closer and setup guy and everything like that. But is it time for the Phillies to start looking at the bullpen? I think it is. And we’re not just talking about a rule five minor leaguer that could make his major league debut and have some type of impact in the middle of the bullpen. If the Phillies are going to make an impactful move to really add to a bullpen that was the weakest spot of this team this past year, maybe second weakest behind the outfield, they need to get on it now. And that’s why it’s so important what we talked about at the start of the episode where JT Romeo you got to either blank or get off the pot as the expression goes now like next week or two because if you sit around too long and the reliever market goes heavy and you’re still trying to figure out your catcher situation and you finally sign him and then the next thing you know you’re like okay who’s left reliever-wise and it’s nobody. I mean, Hobie Milner just signed a contract. So, there are guys that are not just the high-end relievers that are starting to ink deals with teams. It’s about that time to get in on the relief pitcher market. If the Phils don’t sign a notable major league reliever, I will be disappointed in how this offseason has gone. And I don’t see them doing that before they lock down JT Ramudo. So take care of the catcher ASAP and then get on your horse to figure out a new righty reliever that you can bring into this bullpen. So that’s where we stand right now with what the Phillies priorities should be. There’s a lot of news breaking. Kyle Schwarber was uh the final straw of the holdup in the Major League Baseball offseason or I guess the first straw, however you want to say it. As soon as he signed, things got real busy and we’re going to continue to be real busy here on Locked On. Phillies will have a new episode for you tomorrow morning coming out. It’s a little Saturday action with the off the pole responses. So, I’m excited for that. But that’s all for today’s episode of Lock on Phillies. Thank you so much for joining us once again. We are part of the Lock on Podcast Network, your team every day and now the number one sports podcast network. Please make sure you’re rating, reviewing, subscribing to the YouTube, all that great stuff. That really helps us out. And I’ll talk to you tomorrow on our next episode.

Groundhog Day
Just keep signing the same players and get ready to sit out another World Series. I'm 81 and have followed this team for more years than you've been alive and I've seen this movie before.
Braves fan, I tune in from time to time. After these past two years, I have to agree that it does seem unlikely that the team has another plague of injuries and if that’s true.. the Phils have a problem.
Philly has a great squad, with some of my favorite players in the game. I always get nervous when they meet.. especially at the bank.
Congrats btw locking in Schwarber, that guy is a beast 👍

It's necessary to sign JT because there just aren't any top tier catchers that are available. There should be real effort in developing prospects. We could use a few more catchers in the farm system. Meanwhile Marchan and Stubbs are adequate defensively, but there's no room on the roster for both. The Phillies catcher position is one injury away from catastrophe.
Phillies should save their powder for an OF trade. But Quero or Teel make the most sense if they pursue catcher. Goodman is trash outside of Colorado sub-700 OPS and Adley is trending down in WAR YoY plus they just made 3 going for it moves, you don’t then go and move your catcher.
JT makes the most sense give the needs elsewhere. If they trade Bohm or Stot, they need to replace them too.
Thanks Connor!! This is the first I'm hearing the Phillies are close to re-signing JT.
I subscribed to your channel Connor you do a fine job of explaining things. There are very few selections in free agency for catchers. Baltimore doesn't plan to trade Adley Rutchmann according to Mike Elias.
