How McVay modernized the Greatest Show on Turf | Kurt’s QB Insider

If I wanted to be Philip Rivers and make a comeback, I would love to play in the Rams Shawn McVey system. And it actually reminds me a lot of my Rams team back in the early 2000s with the greatest show on turf. Pass is caught to Isaac. Amazing. This is one of the simplest concepts in football and it’s simply the curl route. Something I ran all the way from the time I was in high school. Simple yet continually effective, the curl route. So, what we’re talking about is 10 to 12 yard curl, a flat route underneath it. So, you got a great high low to that side. If you don’t get the look you want to the curl, we get a corner off type look here. So, now we’ve got an isolation on this linebacker. Does he drop deep? Does he work his way to the flat? I throw the curl right behind it. Great timing. Boom. Easy completion on the ground at the 38 yd line. Should be enough for a first down. First down Nula. Now we’re going to look at the twoman wrap combination. So you’re going to see the quick little wrap in with a hook. A little high low read on the backside. Hookah’s got a great feel. Devonte’s got a great feel. And you see it that outside linebacker. Does he squeeze inside? Ball comes out quick for an easy completion with a block and a throw by Stafford down the middle. Caught. First down. Nakua. Boy has he been trusty today. And everybody knows when the greatest show on turf was going good. It was really built around one guy. War number 28, Marshall Faul. He is so dynamic at, you know, running a variety of different routes. Rams love to use Hyron Williams in the pass game as well. They love to run him on different types of choice routes. Put him out here. He can break to the inside. He can break to the outside. He can hook. Great job right here. Recognize the pressure coming. Matthew Safford sees this. Williams sees this. He breaks it off quickly. Recognize the pressure. Make yourself available. Little pitch and catch for the touchdown. Opening dashing and crashing into the end zone goes Kron Williams. I always talk about the big in is the route that built my house. Obviously, two great receivers on the outside. Sounds very familiar to this version of the Rams offense. And they are going to run it a variety of different ways. We’re going to run what I call an influence post. trying to clear out here, clear out any safety that’s there. And then you’re going to see the big in with some sort of elements underneath it. Boom. A little play action here. There’s the ball right on the money right around that outside linebacker for a big play. Play action. Stafford on platform, deals middle. That’s caught by Devonte Adams. Hit breaker from the right side. All right. So, you see all the great basic concepts, some of my favorites that I ran when I was a player. But what really made us special back with the greatest show on turf was our ability to create big plays. When we wanted to create big plays, every two or three weeks, we would pull out a deep corner, but it was trying to get the outside defender to just hold and get up over the top. All right, so in this particular case, we’re going to read this outside corner. We’re going to have the flat corner here. What does that outside guy do? He hesitates ever so slightly. And now we go and get our big play. One of my favorite routes and something we had a lot of success with with Tory Hulk. Stafford takes a shot for Smith with speed. He’s got him. So, you can’t be a great offense without the ability to create big plays on a consistent basis. All right. Another play that you will see is some sort of over route within this offense. We’re going to come over here. We’re going to run the over. have some sort of flat element, post clear out element over to that side. Quick hitch. See the space that’s created and Puka is really good at being able to get through there without contact and finding the void on the other side. Stafford on first down, hooks up with Noula. And then there were our double move plays. We had all sorts of double moves off of deep routes, off of short routes. And when you’ve got two receivers like Puka and Devonte Adams that are so good, this becomes a staple with what you do. We’re going to take a look at what I call hitch and go. Devonte Adams so good up here at the top. You can see the quick little hesitation. Boom. He is gone. And I mean, you don’t get any more open than that on a double move for the touchdown. Stafford tosses end zone. Touchdown. Donte Adams. Every once in a while when you have great playmakers, you can get big plays on short throws. So, another staple that you’re going to see the wide receiver screen to puka aua. See him down here at the bottom of the screen. Simple. We got man-to-man coverage. Let’s kick it out to him, get a couple guys in front of him. All we need is a little contact and he does the rest. Run him through tackles and make them into big play. Let’s come here the blade who’s going to fill up on his feet and touchdown Rams. There is no chance that I am making a comeback at 54. But if I were, I would love to play in this Shawn McVey system. And I fully understand why Matthew Stafford is thriving at this point in time in his career. Can’t wait to see how this finishes up because I don’t know if anybody’s playing better offense than the Los Angeles Rams. Thanks as always for joining me here on QB Insider.
