The Chase: Season 2, Episode 4 – “Wanderlust” | Calgary Flames
One home game sandwiched between seven on the road. It was a good one. Inside Kie stopped by Kie and the Flames will lead backto back games with Kulie in it. This time three to two in a shootout down low. for an auto drive play scores. Anderson shot scores Robertson wide shoot scores now hits scores in digs backand scores. What a goal from N. 30 and maybe dirtier with your shootout moves. That’s a big win. You guys did a great job tonight through and through. 60-minute effort. You did a great job, man. Let’s keep building. Keep building. Get out of here. It’s going to be hard to sleep tonight for sure. Uh great job PK Power Play. Uh this is going to go to Maddie for being a beast. Great game. Cool. Great job in the shootout. Way to get it done. But the late November grind is just beginning. Five games, 11 days, starting with a backto back in Vancouver. Heat. Heat. We’re closing the gap now in Vancouver. You jump Ash. That was the team that is in front of adds three points up on us. We leave here one point behind. Close the gap. That’s the mindset on the guys. Port check. We’re talking about before time, space, hard sticky. Don’t let them get off the ice and also play back the net. Quick place to the dot. And then if you have some time, you’re supposed to hide. Here we go, boys. Let’s have a day, boys. You want to know why? Yesterday. I don’t know. Where did go? It hit me. And you went right through you to the goalender. I think it hit I think it hit the video review. We’re not arguing that. I think on three, but then block shot. Long shot doesn’t go to the goal. It hit me though. If he didn’t hit me, it might have got hit. Like that. The cuts trick it up to go the other way. Heronic two-on-one with Kane. Throw it off. Shoot. Scores. Good power move there by Coronado. Freeze up Anderson. His shot tipped in. Frost scores. Great play on the blue line. Yeah, we got it back. Hey, boys. Yeah. Sorry about that. Oh, it’s fine. Hey, cuz I saw it was Kane, so I tried to beat him. Right. Feeding the front one on back and here scores. That’s it. Sire. Yeah, there you go. 47 big one, baby. They’re coming. So, one, we have to take that on the wall. We got to do a better job wingers on the wall. Number two, Dman. You guys collectively have to go back quicker for pucks because if we do, what’s there? Middle. Middle. Top of the zone. Not a ball coming in. Hit shot. Scores. Cadric. Top of the circle to Anderson. A blast. Jericho scores on the rebound. Hey, see what happens when you pass me. Eh, great goal, by the way. Wow. Are you tripping me when I don’t give it to you? Give it to me. There go. Yep. Yep. We’re having fun. A steal from Basser. Back with short-handed tool scores. Wow. Wow. The P. 300. Oh, nice. Yeah, that’s it. Rasmus Anderson closes out a league leading week with three assists against the Canucks. No one in the NHL has a hotter hand than number four. Gave up the first goal and I thought after that your game just got better and better. And I will say that’s probably one of the tougher backtobacks you’re going to ever have. And I thought you guys awesome this weekend. Great job, boys. Great job. Great job, boys. Great game, Wolfie. Um, but I think it’s it’s pretty simple. Get the puck to four. This might be a perfect fit. Hey, but uh it’s fun to win, boys. Let’s do it again. All right. But the on ice is only part of the Rasmus Anderson story. Often he’s a husband and proud father of two young kids. The way we travel, right? like to be away for so long and you know I love being at home with my family but at at the end of the day like you you got to do your your job and we’re lucky enough to call this our job you know when you’re younger you get lost in the in the game to game basis like that. So, I think with the kids, it just like they’re always happy to see you no matter what. If if it’s, you know, if you’ve gone dash five the night before or whatever, it keeps you I think even kill with with a hockey life and it just I don’t know, it brings out I feel like it brings out the best out of you. Hockey is obviously a big part of our lives, but it’s it’s not everything at the moment, right? It’s like it’s my kids always comes firsthand my wife and then you know then it’s a hockey part and I’m lucky enough that I have a great wife who supports who probably is my biggest supporter and uh you know my family my mom dad and everyone you know really really supports my life and it it’s it’s surreal when you just when you sit down and you think about it like what you do and what a young version of yourself think and all that kind of stuff. So, uh, it’s pretty cool that you get to live your dream and and really enjoy it, too. That dream may have started in Sweden, but came to fruition in Calgary. You know, obviously they’re both born in uh in Calgary and uh, you know, our son was itching to get back all summer. He thought we were in summer house for too long. And I mean, Calgary is our home and it’s been our home for, you know, the past 8 years. So, we have great neighbors who we pretty much hang out with every day and, you know, we see each other every day. They they have my wife over all the time when we’re on the road and the kids play together and you know we so we have a we have a really really good setup and um yeah I got nothing but good things to say about Calgary. He’s picking up quite a bit and you know it’s uh he loves my wife usually takes him to every warm-up unless it’s an 8:00 game. It might it’s a little too late for them. and uh he tries to mimic everything everything I do. And you know when we play when we play hockey downstairs in the basement, he um you know he’s got to sing the anthem, he’s got to do his stretching, he’s got to you know he’s got to introduce himself and and everything like like they do at the dome. So it’s it’s fun to see how much he’s picking up. And even like my daughter, she’s just a year and a half and I think she has so much fun being at the game and standing on the glass. she just giggles the whole time. And um so it’s fun. And it’s fun to see them there supporting me and uh you know it’s all credit to my wife that she she uh brings both kids to the game at that late cross-continental flight from Vancouver BC to Tampa Florida. Over 5 hours spent in the air. Everyone kills the time in their own way. Cards, movies, or even a nap. For Devon Culie, it’s another opportunity to learn and grow. You’re playing at your peak performance, but you’re not thinking about it. You’re just like totally in the moment. And they call it flow. And that’s it’s the book about the psychology behind it. Like I read a lot of like self-help books and stuff. And then those are what led to like philosophy and then understanding the world. And uh I really like a lot of the ancient philosophers because it’s so fascinating how humans thousands of years ago in ancient Rome or wherever they were, you know, their emotions and their mindset really hasn’t changed much. Even though society and technology has changed like crazy, the the human mind really has not changed much. We still feel the exact same emotions. Uh and we still kind of think the same way. And that’s that’s really cool for me to see. Uh, I try to learn as much as I can to give myself an edge like on the ice and I I think for years one of the weakest parts of my game was the mental side of things and now I would say it’s one of the strongest parts of my game. I got really into Buddhism too. Like this past past summer my brother went and studied at a a Buddhist monastery in Sri Lanka and so he came back he’s like man you got to check out Buddhism. So I read a couple books on Buddhism and I love that I got a little Buddha you know on my helmet. I’m not like a practicing Buddha, but I I have a lot of respect for the religion. I love love their mindset, a lot of things, and that put me on on a path of learning about different uh philosophies and whatnot. And it’s uh it’s been really cool. Tonight, the Flames will continue a five-game 11-day road trip and be on the hunt for their fourth straight win when they take on the Lightning. They shouldn’t get time and space to get clean shots away, especially from the inside. So nothing can go through our coverage. That means our sticks are elite tonight. Everybody sticks are elite. That little quick play that Matt showed below the goal line to the slot. They don’t get it. We’re five tight in that area. And then my last challenge for you is off the walls, both zones. Make sure you win the races to the inside. We have to be hungrier and more competitive to get inside on this team tonight. Moser can’t get it around corn in front alone and a left pass stopped by Vaselki. Uber had a great chance to open the scoring now. Lightning the other way and Hel scores. Ball on the far side two. His shot scores. Gourd will steal move up ice for Tampa. Gergensson’s out in front and that one in the back of the net. Another strange redirection. And I think Carile’s got this. Dude, don’t worry about it. Three things breakouts as we get back quicker. They’re sitting on the walls. They’re taking those away. So, we need to find the middle of the ice. That’s one thing. Rush defense. One guy outside the dots and sort it out by talking as to who’s got who. Shouldn’t be in a situation where we have two outside the dots. and then identify who’s taking late guy and who’s taking drivers. That’s not complicated for us. Third thing, in your own zone, don’t stand and watch them. Close quick. Get after them. There’s a loose puck, win a race with a good stick, get on the body. And then the last thing is you want to play against a team like that. Get way harder than what you are. You watch the goals that went in. We just had three guys around one in one of the goals or one example. They win a puck, goes low to high, over and they shoot and score. Three of us on one of them. Hey, good enough. You got a minute left in this power play. Let’s get something done and accomplished so we can win this second period and see what we can do the rest of the way. But we got to be way better than what you were that period. Let’s go. Time to go. Get the next one. Let’s go. Yeah. Let’s go. Come on, boys. Come on. All right, R. I got to get out there. I’m too deep. I’m like halfway through. anything too high, it’s like skin of the shoulder, but if it’s far down, it’s in. Like I’m worried about seeing through the screen instead of get out there, then then battle, you know? I’m like retreating back a little bit. And both of them have that that righty one-time. So, they’re looking to go back up and just blast it. Like, at least if I don’t see it, like give myself a chance like be big. at the top. I will save it. Gel looking for Paul. Backhander. What a stop and another save by Kulie. And that puck stays out. Rish a blast. Kie’s got it. almost had it. You know, definitely came in um ready to go, was prepared. Um you know, the ones he gave up, not really much he can do and um probably could have had a few others that made really great saves on. Um a lot of good saves on the PK. Um So yeah, just uh couldn’t get him enough run support to to come back. Thanksgiving is the biggest family holiday on the US calendar. No one knows that better than American Blake Coleman, who also celebrates his birthday. This year, he’ll have to settle for a FaceTime with his growing crew. Hello. Happy Thanksgiving, Dad, and happy birthday. Oh my gosh. Thanks, baby. And I’m sad that you’re not going to be here, but I’m happy that you are working so hard for our money and family. Oh man, that was electric. I don’t know how you’re going to top that. What were you up to? Choo choo choo train. This is like Wait, but how was your dinner? Wait, you have to tell them about the turkey. What was the best part? Turkey. Yeah, turkey. Yeah, it was good. That’s what she said she was most thankful for this year. I miss you. I can’t hear you. I love you, too, baby. Miss you, too. Say hi to Glake, everybody. Hi, hello. Happy Thanksgiving. Oh, come show him my paws. you know. Oh, she wants to show you her pies. Her pies. Have y’all had pie yet? M. Fresh. Oh, those actually look really good. Mhm. Oh, there you go. Yeah. Oh, there’s the apple pie. Carson did the top. Got the Cowboys game, Mom. Yeah, me too. Hey, they’re winning. Daddy Goop. Hey dude. What’s up? Oh man. Oh man. Look at that stride. Oh peekab-oo. Oh, peekab-boo. What’s up, dude? Oh, man. He’s probably Yeah, he’s probably thriving there. He had turkey and the green beans and gravy and sweet potato marshmallows and I grinded it up. Oh, I was going to say that’s impressive. Yeah, he really liked it. Nice. All right. Love y’all. Love you. Talk to you later. Okay. Bye. Bye. It’s a very unique lifestyle and I think it’s one that gets a little bit more difficult as your kids start to get older and older and start to be more aware of, you know, the fact that you’re gone and how long you’re missing and, you know, and they’re starting to be in sports and have activities that you want to go and be able to watch and be part of and uh sometimes you’re not able to make it. So, that part of it is tough. Um, you know, I’m always checking in to make sure I don’t miss anything from afar, but uh, you know, it’s hard to be away for that that extended period of time. You know, being able to flush bad games or bad nights or or bad months, whatever it may be in the league. Um, and just really focus on what really matters in life. And, um, you know, to me, that’s my family. And, you know, you come home and they bring some light some light to it. you know, both my girls are very competitive and um you know, we came home I came home after one of the games not too long ago and or maybe from a road trip and and Carson was like, “Dad, you know, you guys lost last night.” She just looks right in my eyes and goes, “You’re a loser.” And I was like, “Whoa, my four-year-old just, you know,” and she was right. I was like, “All right, yeah, I guess so.” And um I was like, “Well, hopefully we can get you, you know, we got her win the next game.” So, I started feeling better and she was happier and um but they just bring little, you know, moments of levity and and they they love you no matter what. And um you know, it just it helps you just kind of remember that there’s more to life than than uh winning and losing hockey games. you know, we got a really good group of guys here in Calgary and guys that we enjoy spending time with each other and, you know, while you miss while you miss the people back home, it’s it’s nice to be able to kind of be in the trenches, so to speak, with the guys and and have some fun, watch some football, eat some food. Um, you know, a couple years ago, we got to take them to my uh in-laws house and and spend Thanksgiving there. So, it’s it’s cool when you can kind of bring uh both sides of your life into one. a one and one record through two road games this trip. The Flames remain in Florida and tangle with the defending champs today. Stop three of five from Sunrise. Here’s Rodriguez in by the He shoots and scores. Right in there. AJ Greer coming into a run to ban it. Deep shoot scores. Panthers go back to back and they’re up two nothing quickly. And he’ll advance this into the Panther zone. His shot scores. Yet first jungle. What a rip kid. Hazeri goes to the point. Weer shoots. Scores. Woo. about time. You know, McKenzie Winger first of the season. Did you see that jump? I know. That was like 10 ft in the air. I jumped over the crossbar. I think Jones tipped in front. Great save. [ __ ] And the puck still free. Oh, what a stop by Deon [ __ ] on his side. No problem. Ah, you way to answer with a couple goals there, guys. Hey, just dig in on the walls. It’s important in our own zone that when the pucks, if they do have to go out the walls in this area here, read where the pressure is coming from. You get the jump or leg up on them by changing smarter, changing faster than them. Okay, let’s go P. Get us going. 32 seconds remaining in the five on three. Returns to Cadri Anderson one-time stop. back scores. Morgan Frost on the power play. Room it out. Room it out. Down on the ice. Fairy finds it to Anderson. Holmes now shoots. Tim Cry scores. What do you get in the knee and good things happen? All right, settle down back there. And the Flames complete a comeback here at Amber Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida. Henry this year. Yeah, baby. Big fella. Cool. Great game, Ky. Congrats. But Queer. Great job. Congrats, Quizzy. You’ve worked your ass off. Let’s keep it rolling. Oh my nose. One on four. That’s mean, boys. Uh, let’s try scoring first next time. I’m your goal in the National League. What’s up, guys? Welcome to my crib. I actually just thought of the name when you guys were coming up here because uh originally it was called my summer project because the goal was to understand more about what happened with my concussion and why I spiraled so much mentally and um that obviously led down a path of like mental health, physical health, philosophy, psychology, neuroscience like just understanding like I just wanted to understand like what was happening in my mind and my body and how I could prevent that from happening again. And that was kind of my entire offseason plan. It wasn’t really about worrying about changing so much of my game on the ice, but it was about figuring out the mental side of the game and figuring out myself off the ice. And so, originally it was just called my summer project, but then I ended up changing the name when you guys come up here to the the everything project. It’s just like everything that I’ve kind of read or like a lot of the books that I’ve read and um my favorite parts from each book kind of. So like I have a section on the mental which is like just like your mental health and uh how to combat anxiety and and more positive ways of thinking and um there’s some stuff on Buddhism in here and what the self is and what the ego is. Um where suffering comes from. There’s stuff on goals and objectives and purpose in life and finding meaning in your life. There’s stuff on social life and conditional love, unconditional love, on promoting peace and stillness within yourself, on mindfulness techniques, meditation. Uh, and then I have the the physical side of things, which is the more like scientific nerdy side of things. So, there’s like your neuroscience and brain health. Uh, what’s happening chemically in your mind when things are going negatively or when things are going wrong, understanding how the brain works. And then I have my cardiovascular health, meta, metabolic health, um, all different types of things for exercise, nutrition, sleep. There’s a bunch of stuff on sleep hygiene. I stopped a little bit once the season started, but I’ve like I’ve read so many books since then. I have so much stuff I need to add to it and I just keep putting it off. But it’s really fun. I basically like here on my Kindle I just do like a bunch of reading and then like here’s like a a few highlights and then I take all these highlights and then I export them to my computer and then I read through all the highlights and then we’ll add sections uh to my everything project or if there’s like a section that I already have that a quote from a book works really well then I’ll go and put the quote in or I’ll put it in my own words or whatever and it’s just it’s a really nice resource to have for me so that way if I’m feeling a certain way or I’m not really happy with how I’m feeling or things aren’t going the way I want them to be, I can reference this this project and be like, okay, I’m feeling this way. I’m feeling this way because of this, this, and this, and here’s exactly how I can combat it instead of just sitting here and wallowing in self-pity or being like, what’s going on? Or being so confused. Uh, I have a I have a a guide basically for every aspect of my life. I started it because uh Joey Decord is a guy I trained with, Seattle’s goalie and he’s a guy I’ve trained the last like nine 10 years and during co the his dad’s goalending company stop at goalending brought in the the VR and we were using it as part of our like training. Um, and I thought it was like pretty cool at first and then I kind of let it left it alone. And then I went to uh Rochester 2 years ago, the year I got traded to San Jose and things were not going well for me like in Rochester. I was like really struggling uh mentally and I didn’t really know what to do to improve my game and nothing was really working. So, I was basically just trying everything like trying to get something to click, trying to like improve my game in any way that I could. And one of the things I thought of was VR because Devon Levi, who was in Buffalo system, was also using the sensory. I’m like, well, I use that, you know, and I’m really struggling in the first 10 minutes of games. I feel like I’m not in it yet, but once I’m in it, I feel like I can be good. I just found that it made me immediately get into that mental head space of like being in the game. But again, that came because in Rochester, I sucked. I was struggling. I like I That’s what I mean. I I couldn’t figure out what like what was going on. I didn’t like my game wasn’t where I wanted it to be, blah blah blah. And I was just looking for anything that could potentially improve my game. And so I I jumped into the VR thing. And now it’s like a big staple of my game. But if I would have played sick in Rochester the whole time, like I probably would have never used it, you know? and now it’s a staple. After a day off and another afternoon game on tap, the boys take a morning stroll in Raleigh to loosen up the legs. Next up, a date with the Canes. Come on, boys. Come on, boys. Let’s go. Let’s go. Let’s go. Let’s go. Come on, boys. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. I’d follow you anywhere, Michael. Come on. being there. 44. That’s me. Goending coach Jason Learbara assumes his regular perch upstairs, keeping a close eye on his starting net minder. Man, they sling so many pucks like everything’s going in the net. Across. Stick 20. Stick 20. Nice. You always tell them to pay attention to where the stansions are, where the gates are here. There’s both these corners here and that one. Oh, no. No, no, no, no, no. Not about to find that. Probably shouldn’t be there. Oh, good play. Come on, Matt. Yeah, good shot. You kidding me? We’re good. Cover that. Cover that. This game will go to three out three overtime. One shot to win it. Jarvis getting around Cadri in shoots there by Kie. Eers in. Eers’s back. The puck gets in and Eers will end it. And as this says like we above 500 in the month of November. Now we got to crank it up another step. Okay? It’s a new month, new challenge. And I think we focus on will overkill. We’re going to be in great shape. But we need everybody’s best tonight. Okay? We want to start this month the right way. Like he’s an NHLer for good now. He’s not going back to the American Hockey League. He’s now a stable force on that second pairing. The coach was saying that Khnets off is extremely vocal, especially for a rookie. He’s probably one of the loudest guys on the ice, maybe more so than Weaguer, which is a shocker for a lot of people. Oh, nice line. Oh, I thought it was a hole. Yeah, I heard wall first. So, I played it through the middle just to touch this skin or something. Holy almost broke my ankle there. I know we got better boys. Once we started to get more in your game, we got better as it went on. And that the big thing for me is in your puck battles when you’re fighting for it. You don’t go in light to those things, guys. You got to be violent. Like you got to go in there with a purpose if you want to win that across sliding out and Stanco scores snaps and scores. Looks like a little slow today and um yeah, the result shows. 18 nights on the road in one month and finally the Flames return home, looking forward to a few more sleeps in their own bed this December.
The Flames enter a critical stretch as November comes to a close, with seven of eight games – including 11 straight days – on the road.
And touching both oceans, in the process.
All told, they return home in December with a league-leading 18 road games under their belt.
For Rasmus Andersson and Blake Coleman, these long stretches away from home mean plenty of missed moments and memories, and are instead replaced with daily FaceTime calls. And in the Coleman household, especially, Thanksgiving is a particularly difficult time to be away. We dig deep into the personal side of their story, while the Flames, collectively, dig their way out of a tough start to the season.
We also catch up with Flames goalie Devin Cooley, who shares some intimate details about his passion for psychology and anything that challenges the mind. He introduces us to ‘The Everything Project’ – a personal life ‘guidebook’ that he began working on over the off-season and continues to add to as he reads and develops more knowledge on everything from mental health to his physical well-being, nutrition, happiness and more!
