I sorta hate questions like this. Players are not interchangeable cogs. A player that shines on one team isn’t (necessarily obviously there’s a massive amount of nuance and X-factors at play) a sign that another team did something “wrong” with them.
Again this is why I hate armchair GM hot takes that are just “Why not buy all the best players when looking at them in a vacuum and make the best team?” because that’s not how this works. You have to factor in play styles, coaching, interpersonal dynamics and thousands of other factors. You’re not selecting upgrade points in an RPG when you make a professional sports team. They are PEOPLE.
Bussi might not be as good a goalie if he was on another team and that’s absolutely 100% not a slight against the man or the hypothetical other team, it’s true of all players and teams.
I don’t think Necas’ success in Colorado is “proof” we did anything wrong with him as a player for instance.
I love seeing the Bruins and Panthers make boneheaded decisions that help us!
Sometimes you miss a 100% of the shots you don’t take
Players develop. And defense helps. So does the puck luck he’s gotten at times.
But I want to say that from some of the scouting reports I read on him that the things he struggles with can definitely be minimized by a good defense that can clean up pucks. And the Canes have that.
And I think it’s easy to go, “Oh wow he’s amazing” right now. But it’s only been 11 games. Will we be saying the same thing at 22 games? Or 44 games? He might just be riding the hottest streak of his career. Who knows.
From what I’ve read Bussi had show flashes in the minors but consistency was an issue, especially with puck control and allowing rebounds, and Boston didnt really have a place for him on the NHL roster because of the goalies they already had.
If he can handle the initial shot, Carolinas aggressive defense will help with the rebound. He’s gotten a shot with a team that better fits him.
He got multiple shots in Boston and he didn’t make good on them. Now he has. Not that complicated
Why didn’t Morgan Geekie get a shot in Carolina?
Bostons goalie situation was just better with Swayman and Ullmark from 2021-2024 and Korpisalo/Swayman to now. They didn’t have a need for him and maybe thought that Korpi’s and Swayman’s down year were just a one off thing last year.
Plus nobody plays defense like the Canes do. Any decent goalie can look good in this system and it’s been proven time and time again since 2018. There’s been many number of players throughout history that have come in and caught fire but struggle elsewhere. It’s happened in every league ever. (See Linsanity, Peyton Hillis, Brady Anderson, etc etc etc). I think Bussi will be a good goalie going forward in the league though.
I’m sure we would have loved to have Morgan Geekie here the way they’d love to still have Bussi there. This stuff happens
Thank you for this. Bruins schadenfreude
Bruins fan living in NC..I’m glad to see Bussi’s success. I think as a fan base we all knew he was plenty good enough to be starter, but between him and DiPietro, one was gonna walk regardless last year, and sometimes you just have to deal with it. Hope he keeps it up till we play!
