It is cheaper to keep her, we missed her when she was gone, paid the luxury tax, another one coming soon
Because politicians suck
Bud Adams was a racist asshole. Publicly funded stadiums are socialism for billionaires.
The problem was Bud Adams… he was an asshole.
The Oilers gave up a big lead in Buffalo in the playoffs and Bud thought that was a good time to ask for a new stadium
Name a football stadium that also hosts a hockey team and you might get a sense of how that’s a bullshit offer.
Never forget that if you were a Harris County taxpayer any time until 2014, you were still paying for Bud Adams’ Astrodome “upgrades” from *1988*. Fuck Adams and the oilers and everything that organization stands for.
Bud Adams was a piece of shit. He demanded alterations to the Astrodome or he’d move the team. The city made the changes. Then he demanded a new stadium or he’d move the team and the city told him to pound sand. Fuck Bud Adams.
Political. Very political.
Funding: Adams wanted the city to provide a majority of the funding for a new, state-of-the-art, football-only domed stadium, proposing an estimated $195 million in public funds for a $245 million project. Lanier was adamantly against using taxpayer money, a stance supported by public opinion polls at the time.
Astrodome Issues: The Oilers were unhappy with the aging Astrodome, which they felt was no longer a state-of-the-art venue for professional football and lacked sufficient luxury suites and amenities. Renovations made by the county to add seats actually reduced football capacity, further frustrating Adams.
Control and Revenue: Adams wanted control over the stadium and 100 percent of the stadium-related revenues, which he was not getting under his lease at the Astrodome (where he had to pay rent to the Astros owner).
Political Support: Adams had little political support in Houston, and city officials were wary of opening the “city’s coffers” for a new venue.
Alternative Offer: Nashville, eager to attract an NFL team, offered Adams a generous deal that included nearly $207 million in public funds for a new stadium, an offer Houston would not match.
Bud Adams burned whatever political capital he had on getting the renovations to the Astrodome publicly funded from the taxpayers and he was butthurt when he came back around asking for public money for a stadium idea that the Astros and Rockets laughed at and were never a part of any discussions or plans that didn’t involve them shitting on the idea.
Yeah but not having Bud Adams as the owner? Priceless.
As a UK Texans fan, I am still baffled that local government subsidising facilities is a thing. Just… don’t do that, I guess.
People didn’t think Adams would actually move the team, especially since it was such a big part of the Houston sports tradition. But he did, and the NFL made it clear that any expansion team would play in a new stadium. So it was either pay the money for a new stadium/new NFL team or watch the Cowgirls every weekend. New funds were approved for the stadium and the NFL committed to bringing a team back to Houston.
Then absolute chaos at QB until CJ came around. The rest is history.
Whenever a titans fan say those are their records now..I tell them, I can’t believe yall blew a 32pt lead against the Bills.
How did the NFL function with 31 teams?
As a fan, the experience is so much better now. There was no pre/post game tailgating in the parking lot at Oilers games. They wanted everyone in the stadium buying their shit food and Dome Foam. Now, fans can hang out together, share food and drinks while getting ready to cheer on the Texans. Way better, y’all.
We beat the cowboys game one.

The entire Adams family is full of assholes. Amy might not be as bad as her father, but she sure does give him a run for his money.
We went from new stadiums costing $200 mil to $2 billion.
For those who weren’t old enough during the Bud Adams Oilers era, all you need to know is FUCK BUD ADAMS.
Paid a lower % of the cost I guess, and to a better owner. Also, your 150 number is wrong, it was 195
I was there 3000 years ago. Painful memories.
The harder thing to understand is that the NFL wanted a team in LA and did everything it could to put it’s thumb on the scale to get a team in LA but, prospective owners couldn’t get the money.
McNair pulled off a miracle and if he hadn’t, there wouldn’t have been any prob football for the last 23 years.
Your kids and grand kids would have grown up Cowboys and Saints fans.
It’s crazy they can use 150 million of tax payer money for their stadiums and then charge $500 for tickets lol. Stadiums should come from the owner and nfl expense
“Can anyone who was alive…” in 1994? Damn, that stings.
I recall seeing an article in the past few years comparing the value of the Titans (Oilers) if they had stayed versus their value in Tennessee. It was shocking how bad a deal it turned out to be for Bud Adams. Had he stayed, the franchise would have been worth triple what it is in Tennessee, or something to that effect. Curious if anyone saw that.
Bud Adams pissed off two major cities with one move.
At the same time, he had Memphis bending over backwards for the team… then moved them to Nashville.
