Jalen Brunson jokes with Dirk and talks win vs Magic to advance to NBA Cup Final

Jaylen Brunson dropped 40 points and eight assists to lead the Knicks to the win over the Magic 132 to 120 to advance to the NBA Cup finals. And he joined the prime crew to talk about the game. There he is. There he is. Congrats. The one and only Jaylen Brunson. Thank you for joining us. Congratulations on this win. You are headed to the NBA Cup finals. And I mean, this was an intense physical game, but you commanded it all the way through. What did this one take from you? Yeah. Um uh it took coach uh Brown getting into us um and um sparking the fire firing us in the first time out and um yeah it was uh the way they came out physicalitywise uh I mean we we weren’t ready for it and so um the way we bounced back and uh responded to that that’s um and we way we played the rest of the game as a testament that first time out. You all have to excuse Jaylen’s voice. He told me he lost it by yelling at Josh Hart. So it’s coming back though slowly but surely. You dismissed Dirk was telling us how he taught you everything that you know. It’s true. Yeah. He lies. Hey, hold on. All right. Hold on. No, no, no, no, no, no. Yo, when yo, I said this before. We both played with him. So, when Dirk says, “Yo, my guy, you’re not his guy.” Know that. Cuz he been hitting me with that since he been here. He been hit me with that since he been here. Don’t start with me. Good to know, JD. A lot. We have we have talked a lot about uh your touches this year and how you know you still touching the ball the same amount but a second shorter time every time you touch the ball. Is that a conscious effort that you’re making? Is that something that you guys have talked about? Because I think overall it’s going to help everybody down the line and 1 second might not seem like a lot, but I would argue that 1 second and a 24 second shot clock is a lot of time. Yeah. Um, I mean, we knew things were going to be different walking into this year and, um, it’s all about embracing and buying in. And so, um, I mean, things we can go back and be comfortable and then do what we, uh, we what we’ve been doing the past couple years when Mike Brown wanted to come in and, um, bring in the system offensively, defensively, and we had to buy in. And so, um, if if it doesn’t start with me, then we’re not going to go anywhere. So, uh, I mean, as a leader, I pride myself in, um, being able to be criticized. Sure. and um doing all that stuff. But uh yeah, I just it’s it’s it doesn’t seem like it, but it’s it’s um it’s a subconscious effort. It adds up for sure. Jaylen, you’re shooting a lot more threes than you have in the past here. Is that is that something you’ve seen? Something you worked on with Coach Pete, Hitler Pete. I mean, I think the uh the way we’ve been playing um and I’ve been able to get a couple more catch and shoots. Um, and uh, I just I I have a lot of confidence in my shot and so, uh, I work way too hard not to be confident and um, yeah, sometimes it’s going to go in and then when it’s going in, I’m going just keep firing. Jaylen, uh, I was saying before you stepped on here, like your touch is phenomenal around the rim, floaters, leaners, every which way. Do you feel like that’s something you’ve developed? I know you had to have a knack for that younger player. It feels like it just keeps getting better and better. Yeah, it’s something I had to learn. Uh, obviously I’m not the tallest and I’m not jumping over people like you and Dirk. Um, him and Dirk. Yeah, him and Durk. Him and Durk. Uh, but uh I mean the my game’s unique. I play off balance. I play a little bit with um on balance. Off balance. Yeah. Like I’m on balance, but more it wouldn’t be. And so uh that’s the stuff I work on and I just be deceiving. And um I’ I’ve I’ve done it for a long time and it keeps getting better and better. Thank you, son. I want to stick there real quick before you go. UD, can you talk to us a bit more about how you use pace? I think when fans watch, they understand the ways that you use it to your advantage, but just dive deeper into how you do it. Yeah, I I mean, I try to play my own speed. I try and play under my own pace, under my own control, and uh not letting someone else speed me up. Um I learned a lot obviously growing up and all this stuff. Um, but uh it’s just it’s the it’s a feel thing and uh knowing how I could be on the court and uh take advantage of certain things and how I play, I knew that was going to be an advantage for me. Jaylen, I think the one thing that I think is important for kids to hear from you, it still feels like your game is predicated on getting to the rim. You’re putting pressure on the defense at all times. Yeah, it might end up in a three, it might end up in a mid-range, a floater, but it’s the pressure you put on the defense that allows you to pick where you’re going. Yeah. Uh, I’ve always been a guy that attack attack. Um, I feel like that if you start your game inside to out, I mean, you get more of a rhythm that way. And so, um, I feel real comfortable in the paint. Uh, I don’t feel like I’m I’m slowing up. I don’t feel like it’s it’s it speeds up. I just know that, um, I’m able to get a at least a decent shot more times than not. Um, and if not, if they’re playing two on the ball, I know I can kick it out and find somebody. Um, but I’m just I’m I’m comfortable being uncomfortable. For me, I’m just I just want to congratulate you on the buy in. I mean, for great players, when a different coach comes in with a different system, it’s not always easy to buy in, but you understand that you got to buy in first. And if you buy in, everybody else follows. So, you didn’t have to buy in. You’re a great player. You’ve had great numbers. You’ve done great things, but you see the bigger picture. So, I understand how uncomfortable that is to buy in. So, just keep doing what you’re doing, man. I’m a fan. I appreciate it. Thank you. Before you go, JB, I definitely want to make sure that you and Dirk at this moment because Dirk was talking a lot about how he played with you, of course, your rookie season and just the ways that you have grown. Let Jaylen know how proud of him you are, Dirk. Yeah. So, when you left for New York, I wasn’t sure if this was going to work. He go He actually goes, “Biggest mistake of his life.” What a hater. What a hater. Yeah. So, I’m I’m super proud of you. I’m super happy for you. I saw how hard you work and how much it means to you, how much time you put in, uh, when nobody’s watching. So, uh, you you prepared yourself for a long time for this moment and I’m so happy for you that you’re leading this franchise the way you are. You scoring 30 a night. I never saw that coming. So, I’m really happy for you. Keep going. I appreciate I appreciate watch, bro. Hey, Jaylen, you already know who knew back in 2014. 2014. Come on. We go way back. Brunson for sure. For sure. that. Go ahead and read that for him. Man, Photoshop is crazy. I’m telling you that. You can change the date. That’s definitely Yeah. He was hooping over there in Chicago. Still hooping right now. Jayla, thank you so much for joining us as always. Good luck. Keep it up, JB. We’ll see you Tuesday. Yo, be genuine cooking. Be genuine. Always always, my man. Do not call me your guy no more. My guy. That’s it. My guy. That’s it.

  1. Life long knicks fan. Everyone except the young lady talk crazy about Brunson. Jason Kidd told Jalen to go get his money. Jason Kidd got fired and Jalen went to the Knicks. Udonis you gotta take that big ass L that thing been on your shoulders for years and it takes an NBA cup game that doesnt compare to the playoffs for you to ride the Brunson pylis. You a wild boy take that L.

  2. Brunson has the most fundamentally perfect game I’ve ever seen. If I had a kid, or if I was a coach, and I wanted to teach a child how to play basketball, I’d just show them Brunson highlights and say “copy that” because that dude takes fundamentally perfect basketball to the most elite level. He’s not tall, he’s not super athletic, he just takes basketball technique to the highest level.
