The NHL Star We Were All WRONG About.

The Becket Senica story just continues to get better and better, being such a massive surprise at third overall that even he was shocked when he was drafted. Fast forward to today and he is currently leading all NHL rookies in points. So, let’s deep dive into the Beckett Senica story to see how he has risen and how good his future looks with Anaheim. Senakica just continues to demand your attention. Whether that was as a prospect or now as an NHL player, he just continues to get better and better. And on top of playing great hockey, that improvement is what’s really impressed me most. Senica’s story is a wild one. He was never a bad player whatsoever. Was always a highly touted prospect. But as an eighth overall pick in the OHL draft, he was mainly drafted as a smaller skilled first forward. And that’s exactly what the Ashawa Generals got. In his first season, getting 55 points and 20 goals in 61 games. But as Beck is about to explain in a second, he was a smaller forward being drafted into the OHL. But over the next couple of seasons, as he had a massive growth spurt, everything would change for him. Speak to the uh how it helped shape you as a player to to develop, I guess, significant parts of your game before kind of a late growth spurt like doing it, you know, having one part of your your minor hockey career at one size and then quite suddenly being a different size. No, I think it’s super beneficial. They kind of call me a small person’s game in a big player’s body. So, I think being smaller, I was able to kind of develop that vision and kind of puck handling ability and agility back and forth. Um, then obviously growing a lot, I think I’ve still kept those kind of learning experiences I had when I was younger, and I think it makes me kind of the player I am today. It was great news for the Joshua Generals that they drafted a skill first 5’10 forward that would end up growing. But it was really great news for Becket Senica specifically because his stock grew immeasurably because of that. Of course, as a smaller forward of the OHL, he was still putting up great point production, but with that increase to his height, it made it a lot more tantalizing for NHL GMs. And by the time he was finishing his draft year, the potential was fully on display. He started out the first half pretty solidly, but in the second half really caught on fire, eventually finishing with 68 points in 27 games in the regular season and 22 points in 16 playoff games. Seasonwide, his production wasn’t unbelievable for a third overall pick. But from somebody that was growing from 5′ 10 to 6′ 3 and having to adjust, it’s still pretty good production for somebody that was having to adjust to an almost completely new body. And there were obvious growing pains. Some things he had to iron out. But by the second half of that OHL season, he was practically the Becket Senica we know and love. At the time, I was pretty critical of his skating level, but it was easily explained because the growth spurt growing 4 in in such a short time is going to kind of change your mechanics and really force you to adapt. and adapt. He certainly did. And because of that, his stock heading into the draft was at an all-time high with some people even suggesting it could go as high as number five to Montreal. But as we know, the 2024 draft was a bit of a chaotic event at the time with a lot of pretty big surprises. Arm Levino going number two to Chicago, Beckett Senica, of course, going number three Anaheim, which really laid the groundwork for a crazy draft. It was so shocking at the time that even Senica himself was floored by the fact that he was picked that early. and had the reaction that endeared the entire hockey world. But he was shocked for a reason. Even though I thought he could go pretty high, especially compared to where he was just a few months ago, third overall was still a pretty big surprise. But since then, all he’s done is made the Ducks look brilliant for that move. After he was drafted in the top three, it was up to him to make that pick worthwhile. And the work continued to get put in. the season after he was drafted. He got 86 points 56 games, especially to start things out, was absolutely on fire. And in the playoffs, continued to improve as well, going from 22 points in 16 games to 32 points in 18 playoff games. And even though there was a path to the NHL with Anaheim, I think some of us expected Senica to go back to the OHL again, even though he had some great moments and was starting to find some more consistency, I don’t think it was quite there yet completely. So, another OHL season where he put up like 120 points, I don’t think would have been the worst thing in the world. But, as we have seen with a lot of prospects going between the CHL or the NHL and wearing their future this year, a lot of teams have decided to kind of shelter them a bit and stick with them in the NHL level. It was another situation where Senica continued to shock me because I thought his preseason was okay. He had some good offensive flashes, but also some pretty bad giveaways and defensive lapses that kind of made me a bit concerned. But Anaheim very smartly has kept Senica at the NHL level. And not just that, they’ve sheltered him in almost the exact perfect spot, putting him with some great players to work with and really putting him in a position where the offensive spark can shine. And look what Beckett Senica has been able to do. At just 19 years old, he’s almost hovering around a point per game with nine goals, 24 points through 29 games. Yeah, I don’t think he’s getting sent back to the OHL at this point. I can pretty much only think of the Palpatine quote from the Phantom Menace where he says, “A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.” That pretty much just describes Senica’s entire existence up to this point. All Senica has really done is just surprise and delight. Anytime you think he might not be ready for a situation, he just goes out there and simply dominates. Heck, even for Team Canada, they didn’t think that Senica would be one of their best forwards for the team, leaving him off the roster completely. And a year later, he’s absolutely killing it in the NHL, proving everybody wrong continually. As Senica explained to a good friend of mine, the prospect Don, one of the big things he worked on this off season was his skating, getting a bit more agility and just being a bit more adaptable with his edge work, and that has certainly applied onto this year. That was still kind of my main concern with him, but that’s pretty much been alleviated at this point. Senakai I don’t think was ever a bad skater mechanically, but just getting used to that size and actually skating in advantageous ways at 6′ three as opposed to 5′ 10 is fundamentally different. Senica just had to learn that and he’s learned that in time this year using that flash and that confidence in tandem with that skating speed has allowed Senakica to be an absolute monster at the size that he is. And it’s no surprise to see him scoring either, especially the linemates he has. They’ve been putting him in a pretty good spot to score and he’s done nothing but that. Now, when we look at the Ducks Alliance and how the Ducks have been playing Senica, it’s been just perfect in my opinion. Pretty much that second line has been stapled together. So, Sakica has had the opportunity to stick with a line and gain chemistry and learn and grow and everything. And you have some pretty good players to do that with. And Cutter Goier, Mason McTavish, pretty much the perfect combination for a player like Senica who has some good goal scoring ability for sure. But the playmaking, the vision, the creativity, it’s all high-end. To have a player like Cutter Goce who could just finish those chances, it’s a match made in heaven. Plus, as of now, the Ducks do have him on the second power play. So, it’s not an overwhelming amount of power play time either. But the balance there has been pretty nice to see. And especially on the power play, he’s been cooking as we kind of expected he would. I preach time and time again with rookies that opportunity is again what matters the most for these guys. Debadov I think has had a great season up to this point but the lackluster minutes the lack of opportunity with really great fits I think is kind of hurting his points and his stock. Senica doesn’t have to worry about that. He’s got Cutter Goce Mason McTavish and even though MCAV struggled a bit to start out this season, he’s starting to get going a little bit more. But the stylistic fit has just been a perfect blend of everything you’d want. And in Senica’s case, he’s not just getting the opportunity, but he’s also getting the great players and the perfect synergy to work with, which really does help when you’re just 19 years old. Granted, Senica hasn’t been perfect, but the fact I need to preface it with that is showing how good Senica is already at 19 years old. Yes, there are problems, but for a 19-year-old offensively leaning forward, he has been as advertised. He had that sick goal versus Chicago where he just weaves through a defense, carves around them with that good puck handling and good puck protection. And even though Sodor Blum maybe should have had that shot, still the shot was incredible. And the way to set it all up by himself was as well. It just shows the rush offense, the transition ability that Synica has always had as a major major component of his game has just translated beautifully now onto the Ducks and they’re putting him in the position to use those strengths accurately, which just goes such a long way. And yes, there’s a couple of defensive lapses here and there. And again, the effort level, I think, without the puck does need to come a ways, I think, eventually. But that’s more of a question for me in five years or so. If he’s 25 and he still has those issues, then Ushure, I’ll give it to you. But at 19 years old, just let him go out there and score as much as he wants because he absolutely is doing it in bunches. And the thing is, I still really like Senica as a player. I just didn’t see him as high as third overall. I had him more in the 10 to 15 range and I thought the potential was massive. There just need to be a lot of improvement to get there. And we’re seeing the improvement in real time. So, even though I was wrong on Becca Senica, I am absolutely adoring that I was wrong on Becca Senica because him becoming the player he had the potential to be is just great for hockey. These types of just I don’t even unicorns almost is how I would explain a player like Senica translating well to the NHL. It’s just great for our game. I don’t need to tell you that the Ducks are mustwatch TV, but Becca Senica and the Ducks are mustwatch TV. And if you ever get the opportunity, please watch this guy because he will not let you get bored. I just talked about him being what, 25 years old and the potential there. I mean, the improvements in his game from just two years ago in the OHL to now are staggering. I still don’t think we’re even close to the amount of impact that Senakica can bring as a firstline wing in the future. I don’t think Senica is ever going to be a great defensive player with his awareness, but I do think the big thing that can improve is the physicality. at 6’3, 205 pounds, he certainly has gained the muscle, but gaining just that extra little bit of aggressiveness, I think could really turn him into that franchisee defining player rather than just a really, really, really, really good one. Can he translate into that Miko Rantin type of impact where he doesn’t just have the skill level, but has the force in his game to be just a magical player no matter the situation? That’s what could really separate him. But even though I don’t think he’ll be completely at a Miko Ranson type level, I think there’s certainly a lot of improvements that can be made. And again, in 5 years time, if he’s able to add that bulk, add that physicality element onto his game even more, then we have a special player here on our hands. Whether he becomes a Miko Ronin or not, I think he will become one of the better wingers in the NHL and absolutely a firstline caliber guy for this Ducks team. And hey, for something that was viewed as a reach by pretty much every single person out there at the time, that’s a pretty big success story. Now, the 2024 class in general has some unbelievable talent. But for the folks that were hyping up players like Demodav, of course, and putting down players like Senica because of that, well, Senica is proving that he should be in that Demod Celibbrini conversation. Maybe not in the same tier as a Celabbrini, but among the best players of the class, which is what he was drafted to be. But hey, in his prime, somebody that I think could notch around 90 points or so while improving that physical game. There’s a monster on your hands here if you’re a Ducks fan. And it’s just going to be so much fun, man, to see this player grow over the years. And similarly to what we saw out of McTavish at third overall, it seems like Anaheim did end up making the right decision with Senica as well. But those are my thoughts on the Beckett Senica story and what we’ve seen in his progression up to this point. a magical player that I just cannot wait to keep watching. 1. Man I love to be proven wrong on Sennecke! The Ducks just continue to be a BLAST. 🦆🦆

What are YOUR thoughts on Sennecke's rise? Were YOU a doubter back in the 2024 NHL Draft? And do YOU think he should be the frontrunner for the Calder Trophy? #GravGang

  2. Just scored with .01 second left and forced a shootout win against Pittsburgh. adding 2 points to his now 26 points leading all rookies in points.

  3. Matthew Schaefer is already looking like a future Norris candidate, I have him as the winner. Likely nobody thought he'd even make the team out of camp this year, so a big surprise! Plenty of impressive rookie campaigns.. it's going to be a fun race to unfold!

  4. As a Ducks fan I kind of saw this coming when Sennecke was picked third. There were rumblings the weeks leading up to the draft that Anaheim was high on him. Like many I did some research on and he definitely had the tools and potential to be an impact player, so it wasn't a pick where most fans were furious…even with Demidov still on the board. That being said at the time I think most Ducks fans would have preferred to see Demidov picked but that wasn't to be… I don't think many Ducks fans are disappointed in the least on how things have panned out.

  5. His steady growth since looking overwhelmed in the preseason has been incredible to watch. He looks like a future superstar now after a preseason where most thought he should be sent back to the juniors due to the AHL age issue.

  6. 1 goal and 1 assists in 3 straight games at 19 is elite for a teen. 30 games, 26 points & +9 for one of the best teams in the NHL so far this year! Just had a great game tying clutch AF goal @ Pens down 1 to send it to OT with 0.1 seconds left! Still annoyed my Blackhawks passed on him and Demidov!

  7. Speaking of comparables, Sennecke reminds me an awful lot of a young Corey Perry. A good-sized frame that he's still growing into, a willingness to go to dirty areas and take some abuse to score, amazing puck handling and shooting ability, and an edge to his game that isn't afraid to stir the pot.

  8. He’s a special player. He’s literally like the modern era Corey Perry the way he has a nose for the net and has this awkward yet controlled skating/movement with the mix of hands and hockey IQ.

  9. Even Beckett Sennecke himself didnt expect to go 3rd overall! What a great player, nice to see the Ducks and Sharks with young cores. Hopefully LA can get going too.

  10. The Ducks are looking downright scary. The most interesting team I have seen in a long time—- The movie Young Guns comes to mind. It's also pretty amazing to watch Krieder play with these kids—-like a smooth fox wearing professor's glasses.
