Maple Leafs Full Media Availability | Post Game vs Edmonton Oilers | December 13, 2025
Were you learned to to get from the group into Yeah, I think obviously the third period um you know, play some pretty hockey, you’re in a good position. You know, it’s not that different from the San Jose game. Um go into the third period in a good position, you don’t you don’t execute, you don’t play the way you need to to win a game and um that’s unacceptable. Is it just you think there’s an effort issue? Well, I think they go hand in hand and I think it’s across the board. Um, but you know, you go out to the third, you have you just have to play better than that if if you’re going to win in this league. You know, they’re a fast team. How do you think you Yeah, I thought over the course of the game we did a decent job. Um, I mean, after the first, after the second, you know, you’re in a good spot. And, um, then I, you know, obviously we didn’t play our best in third. So, um, I think that’s the root of of of what what went wrong tonight. And, um, obviously we’ll look at at why that is. Sometimes like that, you want your group to kind of take away something. Oh, yeah. What do you hope that this group takes away from a game like that? lots of things that, you know, we need to improve on and, um, you know, uh, being able to play better in the third when you’re in a position to to win a game and, you know, be in a game. Uh, but there’s plenty to take away. Coverage tonight in front of the net. White. Yeah, I mean, they’re a good offensive team. Um, I mean, you know, I thought we did a decent job within our structure and, um, you know, when you’re outman at the net, there’s obviously something going on. uh whether it’s you know structure, communication, whatever it is, execution. Um so we’ll obviously look to fix that. That first goal that McDavid scored, was that a little bit of a miscommunication by you and Oliver or just McDavid’s speed? Yeah, I think he was you know in behind O there and I he just I mean he’s a he’s a he’s a great player. How tough was that tonight? Uh I mean tough obviously I feel like third period didn’t really finish how how we wanted there. Prior to that how did you see sort of the Oilers speed and their attack? Uh it was challenging for sure. Uh got some great speed there so had had to be on my on our toes there. uh handle it pretty well until the third. What’s the biggest thing you guys need to clean up for next game in your mind? Uh tough tough to say is shortly after. I just try and think about what what I can do better right now and uh let the guys deal with the other stuff. Were you surprised that you got pulled? Uh, I don’t know. I guess you’re always I don’t know. I don’t know what to say. You mentioned things that you want to do better. What do you put on yourself to to be better in those situations? I mean, there’s a couple reads there. I don’t think there’s any major mistakes. And my game tape is just couple couple of those goals you want to just have back. Like I said, it’s tough tough this shortly after it’s easy just to look at the goals, but tomorrow I have like a better picture of it, I guess. What did Troy Steter say to you after that accidental play then? Uh just sorry. I mean, happens. It’s just was doing the right thing trying to get it away. I think I could have got a stick on the pass in the first place, too. It’s just unfortunate there. How would you explain what happened in the third period? I don’t know. I just not taking care of the puck. Um turning the puck over and obviously not playing hard enough in front of our net. That’s what uh have happened the last two games feel like in the third. Do you feel you you let Dennis down? Yeah, I think it was was some some goals that we probably wanna do a better job in front of him. Uh for sure. Uh but uh yeah, we win as a team and we lose as a team. So, uh we just have to to get better here. How difficult was David speed to deal with tonight? No, I mean he’s probably best player in the world. Um so it was a good challenge. Uh we knew that going in. Uh but obviously uh couldn’t couldn’t shut him down um enough uh tonight here. How was your health overall? Felt right. Yeah. A couple bad plays in the third by me, but other than that, it was good. Where do you Where you at with the team’s effort tonight? Do you think it was an effort issue or just execution? No, I think uh execution ex execution with the puck. Uh I think we I mean obviously you got to work a little bit harder to to wanting the puck and and obviously helping each other out. I think that’s uh kind of goes hand in hand there. uh some some bad plays, but obviously uh we need to want to have the puck, too, and and help each other out. So, I think uh that’s something that we got to look at. What do you say to Troy after the own goal there? Quite unfortunately. Yeah, I mean, he’s trying to to defend. So, it’s it’s not much to say, just keep going. He’s he’s talked about it this morning. He’s been playing unbelievable for us. So, um, I mean, he’s trying to to make a make a play and and trying to keep the puck out of our net, but, uh, fortune goes off his stick. What’s the key to kind of after a night like this? Got to reset, learn from it, make adjustments. Yeah, I think uh, we have talked about it uh, earlier. Uh, I think we take the take the bad and learn and and obviously we did some good things in the first and and second, I felt like uh, as well. So we we got to keep keep in mind that we’re doing some good stuff as well, but obviously that third period is not good enough and and we got to do something about that and yeah, just keep working at it. Uh that’s that’s what we have to do. How you uh explain what happened in the first Well, it’s uh it’s hard to uh hard to uh understand. Um just have to be better. We have to be better managing games in in certain situations. You see those guys, you know how good they are in uh in moments and then it can turn on you that quick. And uh yeah, we just got to know it’s uh we don’t have to make the perfect play every shift. It’s uh it’s a 60-minute game for a reason. You got to wear the team down and and uh go the other way. Play north, make them come 200 feet. I don’t think we did enough of that. How much did their speed play a factor? Well, we we played into their speed, too. So, it’s uh you can limit them a little bit. Obviously, they got two of the best players in the world, right? So, but you can make it harder on them um getting up and down the ice, but uh yeah, we need to be better in every area of the game and um it’s just not good enough. Was effort an issue tonight in your mind? I don’t know if effort. I think uh sometimes when when things go a little bit south, you start standing and watching and um they make it look like that too. Sometimes when uh when some of their guys get going. So pick ourselves up and and uh pick up some points here at home. We got to uh got to start pushing, have some urgency and and uh get going. Let that one get away from you tonight. Well, 30 seconds ago in the second period, we throw a puck blind to the slot. And first of all, they should have changed, but they don’t. And we get caught on the wrong side of it and give up a goal late in the in the second period after playing pretty well for two periods. It’s just it’s not smart hockey. And then the third period, a lot like San Jose uh game, I didn’t feel we came out and uh took control of the period. Um, we let them dictate how it was going to play. Puck play wasn’t good. Didn’t kill any plays. Um, you know, so that’s basically the game. You’ve got two great players obviously, but coverage seems to be an issue in front of the net, especially in the third period. They got those two killer goals. Yeah, for sure. We weren’t we weren’t hard enough around our net. 100%. How much did their speed affect the game? Well, they’re quick. I mean, they’re, you know, I thought we handled it pretty well for two periods. Um, you know, you they’re going to get their opportunities with speed for sure and um but I thought for two periods did a pretty good job. But third periods like I mean it’s been two games in a row um at home where we come out and we just we look flat. I don’t like So that’s the bottom line for me with it. It’s whatever it is. You know, we should have been coming out and dictating how we’re going to play that period in the way we wanted to play it and we didn’t do it. How do you change that going forward? Um, you know, I it’s, you know, I don’t know. I mean, you know, I talked to the team after the game and um it’s, you know, our leaders got to take control of it a lot more than they are right now. And um you know to me that’s all it’s all a mindset you know um whether you’re down a goal we’re up in the San Jose game like you just got to have more urgency and more being more direct on how we want to play. Um we didn’t do it in the third period two games in a row to be more reflection on the team’s play than his play. Yeah but you know it’s a lot been a lot for him like I think probably was a little tired tonight. I would, you know, just from watching him and watching his puck handles and stuff, but he’s played really well for us and, you know, he played well again tonight. He gave us a chance to win. Why did towards the end? Why did what is sitting on? Was it was that because he’s done this or Yeah, I mean, he played tonight, but obviously he wasn’t even close to 75%. I mean, he was sick, but he played. But, you know, I didn’t feel there was any reason to keep playing them.

lol imagine a world where Leon Draistl plays for the Leafs. He’d be the best player by a mile which is hilarious to think about
This team needs a Captain, not Mathews
Reilly is pathetic. He needed to go years ago. No heart. Our engine right now is knies, jt, Easton and laughton. Everyone else is passengers as Matthews would call it
Matthews was online shopping for shoes and Xmas presents with the bench iPad and checking his Instagram during the game tonight !! Could have cared less.
C is not for 34. He is not a leader and he knows it. 88 was absent. And other players try to step up. This is worst roster I've seen since 2017. As Berube stated their leaders have to take some control
Get used to this. Oh yeah I forgot we already are.
so very telling about this group and the person that the Captain doesn't speak post game especially when requested by the press. Bottom line is the Leafs best were playing Houdini disappearing act while the Oilers best and leadership showed up.
Where is dead eyes, the uninspired captain and Management gives him the C, what a joke, take note Rogers before you lose your fan base, maybe it's time to change my phone and cable to Bell so they get the message
Can't wait for Keith Pelley to tell us all he is committed to winning and announce more ticket price increases and having the players being more media and fan friendly, fongu Rogers
The world didn’t end because Leafs lost to the Oilers The Leafs are starting to play some really good hockey in the last 6 games Oilers just wanted more last night
At least the core four is gone who would lose in the playoffs
half of ontario has the south east asain flu geez i wonder why , these guys all probably got there flu and booster shots wouldn't want to be sick during the xmas break
It’s written all over his face that he wants to say more and it’s frustrating as a fan that players don’t have the confidence to say more. You don’t need to name out players or through people under the bus but say what is obvious to every fan. I bleed blue and white and this is honestly one of the lowest I have felt as a leafs fan. THATS saying a lot
Gonna be another Stanley Cup winning coach fired because the players have no accountability
Matthews is a huge distraction!
Matthews and Willie were invisible. Leafs were outworked, outplayed and outscored. Trade Maccelli and Robertson.
Where is Matthews that is not how you be a leader it embarrassing that Matthews can’t not answer questions about why the team lost as a captain. You should be doing that we need to have a new captain and get rid of Mathews Willy and sick of this bullshit and players who don’t give a shit
This whole team needs to beg forgiveness from hildeby he is beating himself up because he couldn't carry the team. That being said there was a few guys busting a hump and none of them make 11 million plus. Watch the last 5 mins of the game and that sums up the game. Nylander if you are sick sit but as of the last month you have been an 11 million dollar spectator. Can't believe 2 guys on this team get paid more than 2 full lines and still can't produce. I mean any of us didn't do our job we'd get fired.
These reporters got to go dude. Am I the only one ?
Sleeping for the third they are not making the playoffs they just don’t care your goalie was the best player on the ice
Mathews played this game ? Didn't notice
