Kevin O’Connell’s Locker Room Speech After Minnesota Vikings Win Over Dallas Cowboys

Fellas, I got to tell you guys something. All right? As a head coach, when you get through uh some rough patches and you see what it could be like to be your truest form as a team, what you envisioned as a football team, but to get there, all right, to get there, we’ve had to endure when it comes to thinking about what this game really means to you, thinking about what’s important to you about being a great teammate, what being a Minnesota Viking is all about. And you don’t do what you’ve done over these last two weeks at this point in the year without that. All right, we got a lot of ball left. We got a lot of ball left. And if we do some of these things from a standpoint of 12 explosives on offense, 6.4 yards of play. All right, we scored at one point on six of seven possessions. All right, defensively, you held him to two of 12 on third down. All right, and two of five in the red zone. All right, I’d say that’s situational masters. All right. And then we got three specialists that we’ll talk about because they showed up. The last two games have been complimentary football, but more than that, we got each other’s back and it matters. Everything matters. The way you work, the way you persevere through these games. I mean, I don’t know if I’ve been more proud at a point in time of being the head coach here just because of what this really means and your guys commitment to staying the course. All right. Offensive line. I’m going to start with you guys. All right. We knew that’d be a good front, right? We knew. All right. You guys just kept going. Just kept going. But most importantly, you did not allow a sack against a team that had to have them. This guy’s made some huge plays. This guy’s made some huge plays time and time again this season. All right. He came in here four years ago and all he’s done is grow and grow and grow. And now this game makes sense to him. Now this guy goes out and just makes plays. Whenever your numbers fall, you make a play. [Applause] Two outstanding performances back to back. All right, your quarterback JJ McCarthy. This guy had one sack and three QB hits. All right. He left everything out there on the field. He just continues to grind for us. He’s hurting, but he I’m so proud of you, man. Hell of a job. [Applause] It’s in in games, Sunday night football. It’s easy to look. We got a lot of world class football players in this locker room, but our specialists all year long have been world class. All right, bear with me here for a second because first and foremost, this was Andrew Depal. Andrew Depala’s 150th career game. Give us a quick speech, man. This guy right here had two inside the 20. He’s been lights out all year long. Ryan, right? Where you at? If you had any doubts when Will Recker went on the field to put the game away, I highly question your intelligence. This guy is clutch. This guy has he’s got ice in his veins. All right. And he’s going to continue to do this for a long time for this organization. Will Hey, it’s important you guys soak this up. All right. Soak it up because you you put too much work in. All right. You too. The noise is loud sometimes, but all you guys do is continue to go back to work and improve and improve. All right, we got to have another good week of prep. I’ll see you guys on Wednesday. We got three more guaranteed. And I don’t know about y’all, but I love every single snap with you boys. Let’s make this count. Family on me. Family on three. One, two, three.

  1. I don't care about getting a worse pick, I want to see this team win out and build for next year.
JJ is looking much more comfortable in the pocket. So great to see.

  2. Getting a top draft pick means nothing. Top 10 draft picks can always fizzle after the draft. What matters is establishing a winning culture. The Vikings winning out will always be better than losing out for a "better draft pick".

  3. Now that the season is gone, smirking fraud for a head coach, give your speech. The Wilfs are perennial losers so y9uor job is safe, even though you have been McCarthy's biggest pita where development is concerned.

  4. When you need to lose you win and when you need you need to win you lose. This is as disappointing of a game as you have ever played. Your ruining your draft status!

  5. Even though we are eliminated from the playoffs(one of the reporters told Aaron Jones this saying that they were told this before kickoff) it was still a good game against the cowgirls, but I guess at this point we’re just playing for pride or what’s left of it. Either way good game. I didn’t expect us to win but good job on JJJMAC.
