MSL tonight on the tragic school shooting in Providence, Rhode Island: “My son goes to Brown University. He’s a senior. He was at campus yesterday. So he was sheltering during last night’s game. It’s a tragedy, it hit home. I want to send my thoughts and prayers to everybody…”

It is absolutely heartbreaking and my condolences and well-wishes to all the affected family members and friends of students that go there. Speaking from experience (although not in that manner) losing a loved one for no reason is something that does generally get easier over time, but still haunts you for the rest of your life.
It isn’t however a tragedy. Tragedy implies that bad luck or timing was a major factor in a disaster happening.
I’m absolutely furious that the US (and any country) hasn’t unilaterally enforced gun laws that protect its people properly. Forget stances on what types of gun are allowed, or what age you should be able to get them, etc., I won’t enter that debate, because frankly I don’t know enough to properly take an informed stance, but more importantly it’s not even the most important issue.
Without a doubt, black market gun trade on a individual level (large scale arms dealing for militias/countries is a much more complicated issue) needs to be eliminated, and gun ownership needs to require the monitoring of gun owners mental health status.
Those two things alone would make these occurrences are rarity instead of a weekly issue. It’s unacceptable.
Rhode Islander here: nothing like this ever happens in our little state. This is a place where everybody knows everybody. Whole community is really struggling here so I hope MSL’s son and others have what they need for support
First thing that happens after something like this is people start pointing fingers, blaming particular groups of people, religions, or whatever else they decide to plug in. But honestly, my mind is just on the people who are directly affected. This is life-shattering. It’s the kind of trauma that stays with you forever, changing how you see the world and how you move through it. Long after the headlines fade and the arguments die down, they’re the ones who have to live with it every single day. And that’s what fucking sucks the most.
I have a friend that studies there. I got so scared but felt relieved when she texted back ! This shit should not happen at all!
Melt the guns.
We structure our entire society around the feelings of the most selfish, petulant, difficult people imaginable. We need to stop the gun culture in its tracks. I don’t care about hunters, etc. But if you think that we have to live with this garbage because it might limit the amount of guns a “responsible” gun owner can have, you are part of the problem. I’m sick of the inaction and I’m sick of the nazis.
I’ve heard all kinds of rumors about who was targeting and what was said before the shooting. Does anybody have any information? It’s all very unclear. My prayers are with the victims.
