Donte DiVincenzo Back to the Knicks? What We’re Really Hearing

Knicks fans, the Knicks are officially heading to the NBA Cup finals in Vegas after taking down the Magic last night. And while everyone is talking about Brunson and the cup match up with WBY on Tuesday, something much bigger may have happened behind the scenes because Tyler Kolig might have just forced the Knicks front office to pause their entire backup point guard trade search. Let’s break down what happened in Vegas, what Stefan Bondi reported after the game, and how this performance connects directly to the Knicks trade rumors involving guys like Jose Alvarado, Dante Devenenzo, and now Dennis Schroeder. The Knicks beat the Magic by a 12-point margin in last night’s semi-finals at T-Mobile Arena and now head to the cup finals on Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. against Victor Wanyama and the Spurs, who definitely stunned OKC in the West semi-finals last night. This Knicks team though is rolling right now. They are clicking on both ends. They are trending up the standings at second place with 18 and seven record. And they just showed once again that they are built for big stages. And side note, Jaylen Brunson just passed Richie Garren for third most 30point games in franchise history as he’s sitting at 88 of them right now. Carl Anthony Towns set the tone last night. The Knicks controlled the game late, but the real story from this one was not a star. It was Tyler Koh. Stefan Bondi of the New York Post put it best in his latest article. Duce McBride’s ankle injury gave Tyler Kick a major opportunity to prove the Knicks do not need to rush into a backup point guard upgrade. And Kick delivered a statement. And during the first few games of the season, the Knicks have been losing the minutes when Kick was on the floor. That flipped completely in Vegas and even before that. The Knicks were at their best with Kick running the offense. He finished a team best plus 17 in what was easily his best game of the season and arguably the best game of his young NBA career. Bondi noted two huge stretches. First, the opening seven minutes of the second quarter. The Knicks outscored Orlando by 11. Kick had two points, three assists, and one steal. One sequence stood out. Assist to Josh Hart, steal on the inbounds, assist to Mikuel Bridges, and all backto-back plays. Then he even closed the game. late third quarter and most of the fourth, Kick was on the floor as the Knicks regained control. He did not check out until 5 minutes and 41 seconds remaining. CAD called it one of Kick’s finest games as an NBA player and said everyone in the locker room understood how important he was, even if it did not fully show in the box score and that matters. This is where it gets interesting because as we know just days ago multiple reports said that the Knicks were actively exploring backup point guard upgrades that includes Alvarado, Devenenzo, and now Schroeder. But performances like this force front offices to reassess timelines. Kak is still only in his second year. He’s learning. He’s growing. And in Vegas on a big stage, he showed that he can impact winning. That does not mean that the Knicks could stop looking entirely. But it does mean that they are no longer desperate. And that changes everything. According to Clutch Points reporter Chris Persian, league sources say that the Knicks have had exploratory discussions involving two Western Conference guards. One of them was Dante Danchenzo. This is not surprising because the Knicks never really wanted to give him up in the Carl Anthony Towns trade in 2024. Internally, they valued him heavily. But realism matters. Dante makes nearly $12 million. To match salary, the Knicks would likely need to include Mitchell Robinson or Josh Hart, and that is where it becomes very unlikely. Mitch is a big part of the rotation. Hard is part of the identity and the Knicks are winning. Could it happen? Maybe. Is it likely mid-season? Probably not. This feels more like due diligence than momentum. Now, here is the new name, Dennis Schroeder. According to reporting from James Ham of ESPN, the Knicks have shown interest in Schroeder as well as another potential backup point guard option. Schroeder is averaging solid counting numbers, but has struggled with efficiency as a starter. Off the bench, he has been better, shooting nearly 39% from three. The issue is the contract. Schroeder makes over 14 million this year, even more in future seasons. matching that salary without touching core rotation players becomes extremely difficult. Yes, the Knicks have second round picks, but Sacramento would still need a salary framework that makes sense. Again, this feels exploratory. So, here’s the key takeaway. The Knicks are not scrambling. They’re not desperate, and they’re not trying to blow anything up. They shouldn’t because they’re second in the East. They are heading to the NBA Cup finals, and their young backup point guard just had a breakthrough moment on a big stage. Leon Rose in this front office can afford to wait. They can let Kohley continue to grow. They can see how McBride’s ankle responds. They can reassess in a couple of weeks. That is the position of strength that you want to be in. So, yes, the Knicks are monitoring the market. Yes, names will continue to surface, but after what we just saw in Vegas, Tyler Kolig may have just earned himself real trust, and that might be the most important development of all. 1. Big statement by kolek to make sure he doesn’t get traded and gives leon rose and mike brown more time to collaborate and figure out whats more important. The backup point guard or the size of the bench.
