Does a Dallas Stars move out of downtown Dallas to Plano feel inevitable? The latest Dallas Morning News article highlights some of the issues with the American Airlines Center and why the Stars are seriously considering a move. We’re going to break that down on today’s show. It’s also time for the Stars to put up or shut up. The last couple of games have been rough. It’s now time to figure out who they are. We’ll preview the kings and stars for tonight as well as we dive into a jammedpacked episode here on a Monday. As always, thank you so much for the love and support. Please be sure to subscribe, never miss an episode. Hit that notification bell as well. That way you never miss when we upload a new episode. Well, there was some great stuff in this latest article by Eric Prrisbell of the Dallas Morning News and the issues with the American Airlines Center moving forward and why the stars have to really consider a move to Plano, Frisco, Prosper, right? A ton of different rumors floating around, but it feels like the the hottest one is the Willow Bin Mall in Plano, Texas. And I do want to highlight some of the issues the stars are facing and why I feel like it’s inevitable. Let me know in the comments a percentage of what you think the possibility of a Dallas Stars move is because right now I feel like it’s 80% that the Stars are going to move out of downtown Dallas, which I don’t agree with and I don’t necessarily love, but I certainly understand it. So, one of the issues with the American Airlines Center right now is meeting the demands of the 21st century. Bob here of the University of North Texas, professor of sports management and director of sports innovation space was quoted saying, “American Airlines Center is beautiful. It’s historic, but it’s very limited in meeting the demands of the 21st century.” I understand that even if the stars would be the sole operator of the building, that does not solve all the challenges because it still is somewhat outdated facility, that doesn’t meet all consumer demands. And one of the biggest demands that the Stars are facing or one of the biggest issues that the American Airlines Center is not providing is premium seating. Premium seating for the Stars games is located behind the glass and on suite levels. It affords those fans other perks at a growing number of consumer experts, high-end hospitality experiences, enhanced food, beverages, and premium club access. Right now, the stars would like fewer luxury suites, which are located between the upper and lower bowls, and usually seat 12 to 18 people. Premium seating, inventory, and revenue are significant issues for the stars in the AAC. And it says, despite the size and affluence of the DFW market, here’s where the Stars rank. 29th out of 32 teams generating 257,000 per game. That’s less than half the league average of 520,000 per game. So, the Stars lack a large amount of premium seating. So, the Stars are not generating a ton. And of course, we all know the difference between a lot of different sports. Uh the NFL and NBA, they have huge TV contracts. That’s not necessarily the case in the NHL. And you have to realize the Stars are giving us free games on Victory Plus. So they’re not generating a ton of revenue on the TV deals. So most NHL teams where they kind of make their bread and butter of course is with their ticket sales. So uh that is obviously really really important. Um so the Stars generate 10.5 million in revenue from premium seating during the regular season according to league documents. That pales in comparison with the league average of 21.3 million. Alberts believes the shortfall in premium seating revenue points directly to the inongruent match between the turn of the century construct of the AAC and the modern-day demands of the NHL business model. The Stars ranked 29th in the league in premium seating inventory that is barely more than half the league average of 2300. So they also just don’t have a ton of inventory. And it also goes into know they have a lot of I guess what you consider nosebleleed seats or the upper level which personally I love watching hockey games from. I always recommend people to probably watch a lot higher up. I think that’s more of the playbyplay in me. Of course, if you want to notice the speed of the game, this is a bit of a tangent. If if someone’s new to hockey, you you want them to sit in the lower ball so they can really see how fast and uh how fast and big these guys are flying around. But as someone that’s just watched a a ton of hockey, I like sitting higher up. I like to kind of see everything and how it develops um and whatnot. But one of the issues is is the stars lack some of that premium seating, some of the uh lower bull uh inventory. And also it kind of goes in to talk about how it lacks social clubs, right? That’s kind of the new thing. It is kind of the the social areas, the VIP lounges. it’s good for sponsors and whatnot. The AAC actually lacks that. And I know for some Stars fans, probably like a lot of you that that listen to this podcast, like we just we love the Stars. Um we’re not worried about maybe going and socializing, having beer, like we want to go watch the games and not everybody’s like that. And I understand that they probably have to bank more on maybe the casual fan um to to come to the AEC. And they do like to chat it up. They’re not necessarily there for the game. There just happens to be a game going on. Um like like not everybody’s like me. I I get that. I’m somebody like I have to get there. My rear end is going to be in the seat for 60 minutes. I may get up once during the intermission to go to the bathroom, get a get a snack or something, but I will watch every single second of the game. Well, that’s probably not the uh the primary target for the Stars. Like I I I I kind of understand that. I’m probably not their primary uh target. Like a lot a lot of fans like they’re coming and it even states in this article about how there just happens to be kind of a game going on. Um so they need some more of those like social premium social spacees is what they call it like the AT&T they refer to in the article. AT&T stadium with the the Dallas Cowboys. I don’t think it matters what the Cowboys would do. Everybody’s going to just continue to buy in. It’s been it’s been that way my entire life. The Cowboys haven’t won a single damn thing in my life. Um and and they still have the biggest fan base like in the world. I love my Cowboys, but let’s let’s let’s be honest. I don’t think it matters what they do, what stadium they build. People are going to flock to it. Um because they’re just such a big brand um at this point. Um so it is, you know, it it also touches on the butts and seat model. Like that’s not the way. Um and it even highlights Globe Life Field. Um and and even in in in Arlington, their new Rangers Stadium, it doesn’t have a ton of soul in it. Um it is more corporate. Uh that’s just like that like I go to a lot of games. It’s more, you know, baseball’s a chatty sport, too. Um it baseball certainly is kind of it’s like the game is just kind of happening. Um and and people like to just kind of, you know, go enjoy. You can stand and and watch the game from really anywhere. Um, and it kind of highlights how that is kind of the new wave. Um, and and why Dallas is is looking to the Stars are probably looking to move. Um, the other thing is the the the real estate around DFW, around Victory Plaza, like the Stars don’t own any of that and it seems like that is what they want. They want to set up kind of a Texas Live situation and that’s why they’re looking at Plano where they can own an entire strip of restaurants, hotels. They point out in the article of the Atlanta Braves that that have it at truest park um and how the Braves pretty much I think own every single thing around there. So, it generates a lot of revenue year round. Um and the Stars lack that at the AAC. Also, if the Stars do stay in the AC, they still have to renovate it and that could cost upwards to a billion dollars. And if if I’m Brad Albert Stars, I’m not a business guy by any sense of the imagination. I talk hockey for a living. I call gains. I I’m not a business guy. Would you spend a billion or so whatever dollars to try to really gut out the AAC or do you spend that money into a new building and new real estate where you can really enhance your revenue streams and and whatnot, right? I think that’s the dilemma. And where I sit right now after just kind of seeing the updates kind of rolling and everything just feels like the stars are are going to move. And I I don’t I don’t love it. I I would rather them stay in downtown Dallas, but it it makes a ton of sense. And as we continue to kind of chew on this and we see more and more things said from Brad Albert and whatnot, it just it kind of feels like that is is kind of where the stars are heading. Um, and it also would probably raise ticket prices, which of course stinks for the consumer. I get that. Um, certainly, but I just in DFW, I I feel like again, the Stars u are not worried about pricing out the fans as much as I hate to say it, they’re probably not worried about pricing out the fans that like to sit, you know, are are able to, you know, get into those third higher levels. Um, I I think that’s, you know, they’re not necessarily concerned about that when they can get more premium seating, uh, spend more and generate more that way, have some less suites. It’s it’s sort of kind of where I I I feel like the stars are. Um, and it’ll be fascinating to see again. Um, I’m curious. Let me know where you think the percentages of of them moving because, man, I I just think it’s seriously a thing. And uh I I I would say it’s it’s probably maybe further along than we think. Um at least that that this is my personal opinion 100%. Uh so no one has to believe me, but I’m curious um how how some of you feel um about it as well. Let’s get to some hockey talk. Uh put up a shut up time for the Stars. Last two games not very pretty. Let’s hear from Glenn Goldson about how this could actually be a great thing for Dallas moving forward. We’ll do that in just a moment. Today’s episode of Locked On Stars is brought to you by Indeed. You just realized your business needed to hire somebody yesterday. It’s been a blast doing this each and every day. Apologize for not having an episode out on Friday. We were on the road with the Ice Race. For some of you that don’t know, I work for the Corpus Christie ice race for 10 straight days. I I think it was three different cities. A lot of bus travel, a lot of time on the on the bus. So, uh it’s glad to be back and uh I’ll be back for like the next month, which is nice. We had a big home stand coming up. Uh I’ll I’ll go back home for a bit for for Christmas in DFW, but uh it’s nice to kind of feel settled. Um it was it was a long trip. I think we were all getting irritated, but the ice did good. We went 4-1. So um that was uh that was awesome. Uh but enough about that. Let’s uh let’s talk some some Stars hockey. Oh, it wasn’t pretty uh against Florida. Stars outshot 23 to 15. Rantin, Rope, Hints, Jason Robertson, Wyatt Johnston combined for one shot. Yeah, that’s not pretty. As the Stars got shut out for the first time this season, four to nothing. But we’re going to look at the positive side of this. and Golitin had a couple of answers in his press conference yesterday that I I think are are great and and how Dallas is going to be better off for this and how they actually are good in some of these situations, some of these games where is rough going, but they have to continue to work um and get better in some areas. So, let’s first start with uh an answer about the Stars lack of shooting. Over the last couple games, uh their quantity hasn’t been there. That’s sort of been the the MO for Dallas. We’ve sort of discussed this throughout the season. Stars aren’t getting a ton of quantity, but the quality can be there and has been there. But now with the power play starting to pitter out a bit, it’s really exploiting some of the issues the stars are having at five on five. But there is still some room for growth and how Gooson is still feeling good about Dallas moving forward here. All our guys need to shoot a little bit more. Um when I and even uh you know with our third and fourth lines um and even our defenseman you know if you look yesterday we you know two or three times we looked cross ice uh which you know they had great sticks they probably broke up 50 plays yesterday and when you’re in that much of a contested game uh it it really has it it really gets simple as much as our shots were down their shots is there’s no space. It’s it’s no space. And when there’s no space, you got to have something kind of break down, capitalize on an opportunity or break something down. And you look at their two goals. They made a good individual play, but it started with two other good plays in the neutral zone to get that. And then and then I think it’s Lindell made made a great play. And then uh and then just a happen stance goal. And when it’s tight checking, that’s what you need. You need, you know, a stack a couple plays to get a good look and make and finish. And you need some happen stance. and we got to get better with the happens. And he did specifically mention the bottom six for not shooting enough, but then sort of corrected and rephrased it as everybody needs to to shoot a bit more. But I I I think he’s right in some ways. We we’ve seen the Quebec line, right, and how strong they’ve been, and they cycle well. The Stars in general, I feel like, cycle well, have good offensive zone time numbers and and and and can work teams, but they struggle to sometimes funnel pucks on net. And some of it just may be simply passing up opportunities. And I I like how he talked about in these simple games when you play teams like like Florida and he he mentioned how the Serge are good at happen stance, but Florida is really good at that style of hockey when all the shots were down for for Florida. It’s 2315. That’s not a high high volume shot night um for for any team in the NHL really. But Florida’s very comfortable in that type of game. We know the Stars are not. Stars need to get comfortable in that type of hockey. That is what the Stanley Cup playoffs are. And as it gets tighter and tighter, we’ve seen it three years in a row. They get to the conference final and then it all goes to, you know what, right? So, it’s important that they play in these type of games, especially against a Florida team, you know, back-to-back Stanley Cup champs. They’re comfortable in it. So when the then the offense when the game isn’t high-flying in a track meet Florida’s like whatever Dallas if you know they can get frustrated then they start passing up opportunities because they’re trying to make the perfect plays and now it’s about sometimes just throwing it into the slot, throw it into the blue paint. Uh Barski of course incredible Stars can’t beat him at this point. It’s a good thing he’s in the East. Um, but you have to sometimes you just got to get pucks into the danger areas and go there. Um, because if you just circle around the outside, teams are going to allow you to do that. Um, yeah, you can wear them down, but if if you don’t get anything on net, then it’s all for nothing, right? So, the the stars have to continue to work um on that. Um, and then he went into kind of the adversity of it and and where the the stars are. Um, and how you want to kind of nip this last couple games in the bud and not let it align. You just got to keep the energy up. You can’t whenever I’ve seen teams get into this, the energy has dropped considerably. And um, and that’s my experience. Just the whole mood, locker room, we we’re not there yet, you know. We’re not there yet. And we’re not we’re not close to there yet. But you do want to nip this as as as quickly as you can. But it’s it’s been brewing, too. I mean, these are the little jerky moments that actually make you better. I really en enjoy his perspective on a lot of things. I think he’s he’s great at the mic. He he he says so many good things. I I always feel more positive about Dallas when you listen to to goalie sort of explain the things. And I think he’s blunt, too, right? Um he even said like it’s brewing. it hasn’t been great. They are are trying to get better. They mentioned he mentioned they’re making some wrinkles on some of their breakout uh you know their their breakout uh uh structure and and and how they they have to kind of continue to to work on things. The stars have been phenomenal this this season, but now there’s a lot of tape. There’s there’s you’re playing good teams that are in the right in the middle of the season. like they understand what you’re trying to do and that’s now being sort of taken away from Dallas and now they have to make adjustments and they have to find other ways to be productive and uh he also sort of stated a bit later on that you know you’d rather be 21 and seven lose your last two than maybe around 500 or and you won three straight you you’d rather be where Dallas is right now and uh it’s not going to get any easier. We know the Central Division is tough as they come. Look at what the Wild just did acquiring Quinn Hughes. Uh it’s it’s it’s not going to to get any easier. I mean, this is just sort of one of these moments right now for for Dallas. It’s been generally pretty good. Um despite the injuries, but like just on the ice, it’s been generally pretty good. You’re going to hit some slumps. Now, can you kind of shake your way out of it and wake up um and get back to to who the stars are um and who they can be? And they’re getting a bit more healthy as that’s coming, which is good. I think too, the Stars are trying to influx all these new bodies because of injuries. Also, guys returning, it may be throwing a little bit some things a ride. So, you’re going to have to give it maybe a week and a half, two weeks. I know it’s a what have you done for your late league? You have to give it, I think, a bit for it to kind of all gel back together. They can find where they want to go now with they they got all their guys back for the most part and um and see what they can do uh see what they can do moving forward. Um and it begins tonight. You got the uh Los Angeles Kings in town. Stars need to bounce back badly. Will it be tonight? Let’s preview those Kings in just a moment. FanDuel, the game moves fast and so can you. Los Angeles Kings in town as these Stars try to end a twoame skid. They’re still 72 and one in their last 10. The Kings come in on a two-game skid as well, but picking up points in both, 42 and four over their last 10. And um a good Kings team, which I like, coming into the year. They’re off to a nice start, third in the Pacific. They did lose to to Calgary in overtime their last time out. Calgary’s given some teams a tough a tough go including the Stars not too long ago, but they’re third in the Pacific 148 and9 with 37 points. And they have the ever so ageless Andre Copatar in his final season. Not quite the point production here at 38, but still 16 points at 27 games. It isn’t that bad. Uh they’re getting a lot of production from Adrien Kempe and Kevin Fiala, which uh you would suspect coming into the year. Kempe, they they resign. He’s he’s a great winger. I think he’s great. I just think they have a good balance in in in LA. I think they had they have a good mix of veterans, young guys that have really come to fruition and and really showed up over the last couple of years. Uh and they just they they have decent goalending. Uh they’re getting great goalending from Darcy Kemper this season. He’s got a good mix uh of everything and uh will be a great great challenge tonight for uh for Dallas. Well, coming off what we heard from from Glenn Goldson, I am fascinated now to watch over the next half dozen games or so, if we see those shot totals start to come up for Dallas and and maybe they they start just firing more pucks on net um and not look for that, you know, perfect play necessarily. I’m fascinated to see if that’s going to change a bit for for Dallas. LA at uh at five on five uh has has been pretty decent uh this year in in spurts. Uh but they rank 31st in goals four at five on five. They 51. Um they’ve only given up 45 though. So their goal differential is good. They’re not scoring a ton, but they are limiting teams offensively um at five on five. So that that is where you know Dallas for the last couple games in these tight really you know premium offense type of contests they’ve been on their heels and they haven’t been able to test goalenders uh enough. So it’s going to be important that whoever’s in in the between the pipes Keer or Forsber for LA tonight that that that Dallas is is able to to put some to put some heat on on him. Right. LA uh coming into uh this one tonight 28th in goals four but third goals against. So that um that would kind of lead you to believe that the the Stars should be able to shut them down offensively. Um and it’s it’s going to be kind of who’s who’s going to win the battle, right? Um something’s going to have to give. The Stars are pretty good in both categories. Um, but if if if Keer’s going to be good, if he’s going to be hot, can Dallas break through and they break through and sort of grind it out, can they start getting to the net front feeding pucks there um and whacking uh away again? They they can’t rely on on Robo and Company to to just do it all. Um they they’ve sort of done that. The power play has struggled. They went 0 for two the other night. Um and and they’ve lacked some of that juice. So they they have to find other ways to find offense. It’s it’s sort of been I mean really it’s that that has been the downfall of Dallas last three years in the in in times when it matters the most. Can they find ways to generate offense? Um and they they need everybody to be in on it, right? Um they they uh they’re getting some bodies back. Harley hasn’t been great since his return, which is just uh after they they signed him. they need him back. They need a lot of guys to to step up. Um but um I think some of it is some of it is, you know, the amount of wear and tear on some guys. Um with the injuries, um I think some of it is just getting back. You got to have I think you have to allow time for some guys to just assimilate. Um a lot of updates still, you know, Lungquist missed the last couple games with an illness. Adam Ernie is skating. He’s close to returning after being out multiple weeks. So, that’s a good sign. Uh, Labushkin um is is still dealing with a lower body kind of thing. Um, he he is sort of like game time um here tonight. So, uh be sure to to follow us at Locked On Stars. I’ll be sending out information. 1. I want the organization to do well obviously but it does suck that they r making it a thing for only the wealthy…a few years ago I got my whole family into my favorite sport by getting the holiday hat trick for $99 my family won't be attending any more games with the price more than that

  2. I mean seeing how I'm in McKinney I can't hate this for convenience, but it obviously feels wrong in the same way the Cowboys have been in Irving/Arlington for my entire lifetime.

  3. A move would be convenient for me just because of the long drive. But when tickets go up in price, I guess it doesn't matter to me, I won't be able to go. I can't afford them now.
