Michigan Alum Rich Eisen Reacts to JJ McCarthy’s 3-TD Night in Vikings’ SNF Win vs Cowboys

Not a great week for Michigan football. I don’t know if you’re aware of that. No, not at all. If you if you’ve been reading the news, um I’m sorry. I’m sorry. No, no, listen. It’s it’s okay. Uh but yes, I saw that and I was cheering from my front row seat of my couch. I was fist pumping. I was clapping. Um because I will just say this. Um, obviously I’m biased, but the guys around here in this studio who, you know, roll their eyes when I did a little bit uh biased about my Wolverines, you you’ve all met JJ McCarthy, um, he is one to root for. He is one to root for and he does at the end of the day have some brass. Now, some of times that brass comes out with him calling himself nine before he wins games like he does on Monday Night Football. And sometimes it it’ll come out it’ll come out where you know he’s talking about unccoring fine wine and instead the wine comes out cked. You know what I mean? Like that’s that’s happened. But you got to have that. You got about in the postgame in the postgame presser. He was going back and forth with KC about uh he did the gritty in practice on the naked boot and uh he he was told not to pull it out in the game, but you saw what I saw. You pulled it out. So, did you open the door to your car? Was that an email that just came in? Was that a text? Text. It was a text from the football god saying you got yourself a real one, Drew. That’s right. Enjoy it. Enjoy it cuz nine has showed up. Thank you, sir. Thank you, Drew. I didn’t even I didn’t even curse nine out last night. What’s that tell you? Let me just say this. Okay, let let’s just um fun aside. when that first pass attempt gets tipped in the air. I don’t know if did you see that part of the game or Okay, cuz Trico’s like he didn’t throw an interception in in in a game last week. It was his first one as a proer. He didn’t throw an interception in a game and Collins was like and it was a big sigh of relief in Minnesota and then he fades back and the ball gets tipped and it’s intercepted by Quinnon Williams. Okay, so when that happens, yeah, obviously JJ McCarthy is not aware of the playbyplay and byplay between the two announcers of Sunday football. That is not a great way to start the game. So that said though, could you He’s He could easily have gone back to the sideline going, I’m on Monday Night Football for the first time since week one when I had a terrible time of it in Chicago until the fourth quarter and he could have gone into a spiral. He didn’t. He didn’t. The kid has some reserve, man. He’s got some brass. And I’m just telling you because I watched damn near every snap of his college football career. He has it in big games. And just because he hasn’t shown it consistently enough yet doesn’t mean he’s not it. Up front you could see as well they had the nextG stat stats of the offensive line group. They’re finally getting some protection for him. And at some how many times has the ball either hit the hands of Justin Jefferson and he uncharacteristically doesn’t catch it or it hits the hands of Justin Jefferson because McCarthy is overshot him or he catches a touchdown and he’s gritting but nope there’s an illegal formation. At some point they’re going to connect. It’s only a matter of time. And Jefferson dropped one too. He did in the end zone. Yep. At some point it’s going to connect. and the coach and this quarterback is going to be all right. Not this year. You know, we knew there were going to be some growing pains, ups and downs. It just was going to happen. Kids, JJ McCarthy is 22, 22. And even though I was talking about Bo Nicks having 61 starts, you know, McCarthy was just the starter Michigan for two years. He only lost one game, but he has it. He’s got the Harbaugh in him and now he’s got the Kevin Oonnell in him. He’s got the weapons around him. Hey, I might be off on this too because obviously again I remind everyone I am biased. Next up, he’s at Jackson Dart and the Giants. Then he’s home for Detroit and home for Green Bay. JJ McCarthy will have a say in who wins the NFC North. It’s going to happen. He’s going to be in the mix of two crucial games for the Packers and the Lions. Crucial. So, there’s that. Sorry. He’s the one that nailed the coffin shut on your Cowboys. You’re still alive like the Dawn. Okay. He’s taking a lot of shots out of your Cowboys have taken a lot of shots outside. you know, picking out the fruit outside the Jenko Olive Oil Company there in Dallas. You want some oranges? But I’m I’m so I was so psyched watching that game last night. Oh gosh, I love that kid. He’s giving me so much joy. Hey, you made it all the way to the end. Thanks for that. 1. People just gotta chill he's a rookie trying to play a teir 1 scedule. He didn't get the easiest scedule like a team that is BAD and drafts a QB. I think in about year 3 he will be a solid QB. Not saying Josh Allen or Mahomes but I can see him having a good career.

  2. JJ will be fine. He's had a brutal start to his career, just needs to play & get some reasonable protection. You can see the confidence growing each week. I think next year will be his coming out party.

  3. JJ can have growing pains but Dillion Gabriel can't, interesting. Oh yeah sorry, I forgot the Rich's goat of a nephew was drafted behind Gabriel, sorry

  4. One little thing that stood out to me was McCarthy laughing about the batted pick. As Rich was saying, he could have spiraled after that play and said "tonight's not my night", but he plays with so much confidence it's almost like he takes himself out of the game mentally therefore letting the pressure off. Dude is a football psychopath in the best way possible.

  5. Viking fan here, saw JJ vs Ohio State his junior year and he was soooo clutch that I said out loud to myself- that’s who I want the Vikings to draft.i’m all in on 9!

  6. If you are being realistic, we knew there would be growing pains with J.J. McCarthy. Troy Aikman I believe only won two games in his rookie season. If not for the Vikings making a stupid trade for Hershal Walker and sending a 1/4 of a roster and a slew our multi-pal high round picks. The Cowboys wouldn't have half of the Super Bowl Trophies that they have. So to see the Cowboys get there asses kicked last night was very satisfying by the Vikings and McCarthy! It's our turn to start bring home the Lombardi's to Minnesota!

  7. "It" isn't a thing. That was his best 4 quarter performance and he should be praised for the progression he showed. NFL quarterbacking isn't a vibe.

  8. The best thing about Nine is how GREAT he is on 3rd downs. yeah his passing yards suck, yeah he's missing wide open receivers, yeah there's a ton to fix, but the kid can PLAY on 3rd down, when the team NEEDS to have it.

That's something not a lot of rookies can say.
