Blues claim Berggren off waivers

  1. Actually an interesting move. 25 years old, somewhat decent NHL numbers, never found his groove in Detroit. This could also be for Springfield because they are pretty depleted with all the NHL call ups

  2. When I stumbled on a correct prediction about this yesterday, I noted that he’s just 1.5 years removed from having 56 points in 53 AHL games. And he was the former #33 overall pick in 2018, so *just* outside the first round.

And of course the Swedish connection may or may not be a real factor.

But there’s some skill there and he’s shown it can translate to the North American game. He hasn’t shown in abundance that it can translate to the NHL game, but I don’t really follow the Wings closely enough to say why that is. But there’s still been enough production in his opportunities to keep some intrigue around.

  3. Detroit fan here. Berggren’s a great guy, has the personality of a golden retriever. He’s kinda in the mushy mix of not offensively good enough to crack top six but doesn’t really play the style of bottom six. His offense can be there, but his defensive game has always needed work. I feel like he could use a fresh start for sure, and it might be the wake-up call that he really needs to round out his game a bit better. Inexpensive, one-year contract, I can only see this as, at worst, a nothing acquisition done with by the end of the season, and at best a guy finding steam with a new team. Sidenote, apparently he bought a boat in the off-season and I immediately knew that was gonna age poorly lol

Take care of him Blues Bros

  4. Wings fan commenting here to say that myself and almost all other Wings fans will be rooting for him to establish a bigger role in St Louis than he was able to in Detroit. He is a good player and great personality from the fans’ perspective. I think given the opportunity he could really have success. In the past he was all offense no defense with too many hope plays that dont work in the NHL, under Todd he really improved the responsibility with the puck but his offense suffered and he wasnt able to get it going with this limited starts and playing time. There is a real potential for him to put them both together and become the player a lot of people think he could be. Sad to see him go and rooting for him.

  5. Red Wings fan here.

He’s got pretty good vision and playmaking, protects the puck pretty well, has a knack for being in the right place/ right time to clean up garbage in front of the net. He’s more or less useless off the puck and not physical at all. He’s a lefty but actually prefers RW for better shooting and zone entries.

Off ice, he’s kinda… dumb? He once drove to Grand Rapids Ohio instead of Michigan, he once was gently hit by a bus in Sweden he’d wandered in front of, his English isn’t the best. In our player poll in the Athletic last year, he was voted “player who would make the worst GM” and “wouldn’t survive on a desert island”, as he “needs someone to take care of him”. Super friendly and happy-seeming guy though, he’s a bit like a golden retriever.

  6. Doug Armstrong is gonna dress up as Santa and ring the Salvation Army bell outside of Schnucks to ask for NHL players

  7. Red wings fan here. Going to miss home. Such a great personality. Home he does well for y’all and carves out a spot in the lineup.

  8. Looking at Berggren’s teammate data from the last few seasons, he seems to fare best when played with physical linemates. Frenchy, Copp, MBN, etc. I wonder if he might find himself riding alongside Schenner on Thursday.

  9. I asked in the Red Wings sub what we should know about Berg and got a ton of replies if anyone is interested in hearing their feedback firsthand.

To summarize, sounds like a 3rd-liner with possible middle six upside. Not consistent enough in certain aspects of his game in Detroit to earn minutes over other players, similar to our Texy situation (before all the injuries). Could be a good player for a fresh start. Sounds like he’s a fantastic locker room guy as well.

  10. The Leafs have been my “other” team for decades, especially with the arrival of Chief.
After watching (why?) last night’s game,
I’ve gotten on the Predator’s Train.
Rhino is surely a strong presence in the room, and lately he’s becoming a bigger presence on the ice.
    Let’s Go Rhino!

  11. Reading through the comments (appreciate the Wings fans providing insight), sounds a lot like Texier and Vrana. Hopefully Monty can help him round out his game.
