Atlanta Falcons Fans Are SCREAMING About This Possibility…

All right, do me a favor. Put down the pitchforks for just a second because I know that there's going to be a lot of rage surrounding this topic. However, with recent NFL news, knowing what we know about the Indianapolis Colts situation, is it even remotely possible that Matt Ryan could come back to the Atlanta Falcons? I'm here to tell you today that although it might be unlikely, it is not entirely impossible. Welcome in Falcons fans to Falcons Today by Chat Sports. My name is Moose. Before we start and before you butcher me down in the comments section, I recognize the lunacy of this idea, but nobody, myself, producer Jack, anybody at the chat sports office, nobody thought that there was a chance that 44year-old Philip Rivers would play and start in the year 2025. It was not even a blip of an idea. And yet, here we are. So, crazier things have happened. And by the way, Matt Ryan's 40. Just saying. So today's show, why Matt Ryan? Why would it make sense for the Atlanta Falcons if they wanted to explore this? And if you love these types of videos, even just for the hell of it, the season's over. Let's start about the very first bit of information. I wouldn't even bring this up if this didn't come out of the horse's mouth directly. No, literally, Matt Ryan said this. He said, "I've had these feelings where I've been sitting around and watching games, and man, I think I could still go out there and do it." He then goes on to say, to play a little bit of devil's advocate, that he would have to treat his body right. And at this age, it feels different getting hit. It feels different after you've thrown the ball 40 times. He even said that throwing with Matt Stafford this summer caused his arm to basically just dangle there. But could you imagine what he could do with an entire off season of training? And I do want to bring this up because it was only four years ago that he took his last snap as an Atlanta Falcon back in 2021. So, you tell me what the massive difference is between age 36 going on 37 versus age 40 going on 41. It can't be that big of a difference. 67% completion percentage. Almost 4,000 yards passing, 20 touchdowns to 12 picks and a passer rating of 90. Those aren't bad numbers. Are they elite? Are they Pro Bowl level level numbers? No, of course not. But I also think it's important to note that 44y old Philip Rivers went out this week after basically coaching high school football for the last couple of years and threw 18 of 27 for a buck 20. One touchdown and one pick against the Seattle Seahawks who Kirk Cousins couldn't move the ball against. And Philip Rivers did this. Seems like with the right coach, a player of that status could still go out and compete. And like I said, we all thought it was nuts to bring back Philip Rivers. Everybody said, "How is he not just going to die in the pocket? If he gets popped one time, he might literally go into a coma." Well, Matt's 40 years old, so 40 is not a crazy age anymore. Tom Brady played till he was 45, almost 46 years old. Phillips playing until 44. Joe Flacko's 41. There's a lot of different quarterbacks out there that are playing well into their early to mid-4s. It's not an insane age anymore. Aaron Rodgers. Now granted, they've all been active and playing in the league. Joe Flacco being one of them. Matt Ryan has been off for a few years. I totally understand. However, I feel like the only one saying this right now, and nobody agrees with me. I said if you sign Flacco, if you admit to wanting Joe Flacco, you're a hypocrite because you can't say that just because Flaco has been active in the league for the last three years and Matt Ryan hasn't that it would be insane to not sign a player that's one year younger. The ages don't change, guys. 41 is still 41. 40 is still 40. If you gave Matt Ryan an adequate amount of time to prep, he could perform like Joe Flacco at 41. Now, he's not mobile, right? But neither are Penn and Kirk. So, you're still getting no mobility. So, like it's there's it makes too much sense to just go out there and say it'll never happen. Now, likelihood of it happening, low. Do the Falcons want to go out there and do something like this? I don't know, but it's fun to think about. So, let's just get the question out of the way. Would you be in favor of signing Matt Ryan? Type S for sign or P for pass. I would have never made this episode even three weeks ago, but Philip Rivers is playing, guys. Philip Rivers is competing, guys. Philip Rivers was leading at one point, guys. So, coming up next, I'll tell you why the plan could make sense, how it could be financially feasible for the Atlanta Falcons to go out there and sign Matt Ryan for cheap, specifically if you have a plan at quarterback already set in motion. I think that's an very important distinction. There has to be a plan if Matt Ryan is even an option. Before I tell you what that plan is, got to tell you about our friends over at Factor. All of that in the comments and description of today's video. So, how it works, it's a three-step process, a three-step plan, if you will, if you wanted to bring in Matt Ryan. And if you've made it this far, you might as well keep listening because you're still interested. apparently uh cutting Kirk could save money and it would save money no matter what you decide to do with Kirk prejune 1st or post June 1st. You can go look these numbers up for yourself. Just go over to Sprack, go over to over the cap. If you released Kirk prejune 1st, so basically as soon as the season ends, you cut ties with Kirk, it saves 22.5 million. If you designate him as a postjune 1st cut, it's $35 million in cap savings. But that means you wouldn't be able to sign Matt Ryan immediately. The next part, I'll call this part one A to 1B. Ryan would have to be on the vet minimum. You would not go out there and sign Matt Ryan for a $10 million contract. You would sign him to like a $1 million deal. That would be it. So essentially what you'd be doing is saying, "Okay, 21.5 million we would designate to free agency. $21.5 million we would designate to going out and signing a player that we can make our team better with. So that's the first step. Release Kirk and he has to be a vet minimum guaranteed. The second part of the plan, you'd have to draft a quarterback. You can't roll into the 2026 season with Matt Ryan as your QB1 and no other plan. I it would be financially and organizationally irresponsible to do so. Plus, you'd only have to plan for him playing six to eight games. That's it. So, if anybody thinks that Matt Ryan comes back and he's going to play the whole season, you're fooling yourself. There's no way. You'd play him for six to eight games. He would be the very definition of a player coach, too. The ultimate mentor, the ultimate quarterback's coach, the ultimate draft and develop. Ryan starts for the surfers six to seven to eight games and then you put in the kid. Well, Moose, what's your plan for round three or four quarterbacks? I don't know. How about these four guys right here? You could pick any one of these four. Diego Pavia, Carson Beck, Lenora Cellers, Drew Eller. Pavia might not even get drafted at this point. So, we have no idea. Uh Sellers is going back to school. All right. Well, never mind. Sellers is going back to school. So, Aller Beck doesn't matter. There are plenty of quarterbacks that you can get in round three or round four. I'm still very high on Jaden Mava from USC. So, look, there's plenty of other options that you could explore here if you wanted to sign Matt Ryan, but you'd have to at least draft a quarterback. And finally, and probably the most important one out of all, you would have to admit that you're conceding on Michael Pennock Jr. I want to be very clear and intentional when I say this. You would have to be 100% out on PennX. You could not keep Penn on the roster. Period. If Penn is on the 53 next year, Matt Ryan doesn't make any sense. It doesn't. Now, whoa, whoa, whoa, Moose. What about if we had Ryan and Penn as our two quarterbacks? Do you realize that you would absolutely be shutting the door in the face of Michael Penn? Basically, we will take somebody who has been out of the league for 3 years and is a fan favorite in Atlanta over you. Now, there are questions right now about Michael Penn Jr. being ready for week one given his ACL injury, but if you look at the numbers on screen right now, Ryan and Penn through their first 10 starts were identical. So, PennX, Ryan, they have very similar characteristics from a stylistic standpoint. It doesn't bother me if you were to have that scenario. But think of what you would be doing to the young man's confidence. Do you see my my point here? It wouldn't be a on the- field thing. It would be an intangible thing. It'd be something like you would never get the trust of Michael Penn Jr. back from this organization. Period. So, you would have to admit, okay, we whiffed on PennX, the injuries, everything baked in. We were a little too hyperaggressive on that. We're moving on. But you'd have to draft a quarterback then. The only way it works is if that happens. And that's why I only give this like a less than 5% chance of happening. I don't think the Falcons are off on Michael Penn. I don't think they're going to go out and actively search for Matt Ryan. But it is fun to think about considering Philip Rivers is back to a team that he used to play for. So why not Matty Ice? It just it doesn't it would be great for the channel. It would it would be great for my job. It'd be great for your viewing pleasure. I don't know that it makes a ton of sense for the Atlanta Falcons, but it wouldn't make sense if you took that approach. If you got rid of PennX and if you really wanted Matt Ryan to get one more shot to retire an Atlanta Falcon, it could happen.
