Mahomes knee injury is more complicated than expected…

So, now that we know Patrick Mahomes' knee injury involved multiple ligaments, some fear that this could complicate his rehab process and timeline to return for the 2026 NFL season. Initial reports were saying that Mahomes had only torn his ACL and had it successfully repaired or most likely reconstructed by the Cowboys head team physician Dan Cooper, which is true, but details came out a bit later from Ian Rapaort that he had to have his LCL repaired as well. Ian's report stated, quote, "While that can complicate recovery, it doesn't necessarily extend his rehab longer than 9 months or so." Well, 9 months from right now is September 16th, roughly week two of the 2026 NFL season, right around that estimated recovery time for Mahomes. However, several doctors are now a bit concerned about that timeline given the fact that both his ACL had to be reconstructed and his LCL needed repaired. Dr. David Cho, a longtime exNFL team doctor, thinks there's no way for Mahomes to be 100% healthy for the start of next season. Dr. Brian Sutter was more optimistic that Mahomes would be ready in September when he thought it was just the ACL, but now that it also involves the LCL, he is a bit less confident that he'll be ready by the start of the season. Dr. Jesse Morris echoed the same, saying multi- ligament ACL tears traditionally take longer than 9 months. And while he is confident Mahomes has a good chance to be ready for week 1, quote, he won't fully be confident in his knee until 2027. And for what it's worth, Carson Wentz had a somewhat similar injury. ACL and LCL were both involved week 14 of 2017 and only missed two games of the 2018 season. The reality is every individual is going to have their own unique timeline and at best we can just look at the averages. So, while Mahomes's timeline and journey is going to be his own and his only, he's going to fight like hell to get back out there as soon as possible, whether it's week one or a bit after

  1. Rest Mahomes in the ENTIRE 2026 season to make sure he's 100% recovered. Don't rush him back and risk further complications. Let Travis Kelce go and free up the cap space. There is no point in bringing Kelce back in 2026 when Mahomes is out. Rest Xavier Worthy, Chris Jones and the offensive line for the rest of the 2025 season. Start playing the rookies like Royal and Smith. THEY NEED THE REPS.

Start the rebuild for the 2027 season when Mahomes is back.

  2. To be honest I’ve been expecting that Mahomes won’t really be the same until at the earliest the season of 2027. Of course I’m hoping he has a speedy recovery as well as a successful one, but the truth of the matter isn’t only that he needs to have a healthy recovery but also that a lot of the Chiefs roster needs to have major changes. In particular we really need to get AT LEAST a competent rb1 and preferably a really good rb1 and no I would not just rely on the draft and fa signings I think it wouldn’t hurt to consider really pushing towards making a trade for a better high end rb or something like that. Not only can we not keep having Mahomes be the lead rusher in multiple games, but he shouldn’t be in scenarios where he has to run because the Chiefs don’t have a good run game they can lean into or because his receivers can’t catch. Simply put Mahomes CANNOT be asked to do EVERYTHING even if we’d like it to be that way

  3. I said with an injury like that, it's gonna take nearly a year of therapy to have better movement on that knee. And it's gonna take another half a year for him to fully use that knee where he's putting weight on it and using speed.

And i hope he's looking out for himself and not the team or pleasing others. His health comes first. It's his body afterall. Don't rush. Take time to heal properly.

  4. Do you think he was playing through something these past few weeks? He didn't look like himself during that cowboys game a couple weeks back.

  5. Patrick Mahomes is the man. Forever my goat. I’m sure he’ll work hard and attack rehabbing like he does everything. Whenever they clear him to come back, I’m sure he’ll be ready

  6. Did anyone forgot about joe borrow who tore his acl, pcl, mcl and he had his surgery dec 12th and he was ready in 9 months so 3 day different when mahomes had his. He will start in week one.

  7. İ had it done I'm 70 strong knee 1985 surgery was considered new procedure, at 30 full recovery 9 months total rupture + 19mm meniscus tear. But everyone is different I can say rehab was long and painful.

  8. I’m not an athletic person so obviously my recovery was different but I tore my ACL and MCL in my left knee about 2 and a half years ago. I didn’t feel fully confident in my knee till about a year after the surgery. Obviously this not the same thing as I am not a football player and Mahomes tore his LCL and I tore my MCL, but I’d imagine that it might be similar recovery unless Mahomes attacks rehab aggressively which seems to be the case given how Mahomes has spoken about it.

  9. Needed mahomes healthy and in playoffs so Allen could spank him… now no matter how far we go, everyone will say it's because KC wasn't involved, which we all know it's a garbage take.
