NHL Revenues Up, Blues Sign Fabbri, Stars’ Road Streak Continues, Injury News

Welcome back. All right, news of the day video for all you fine people on the internet for your Wednesday. It is December the 10th. Uh we'll go ahead, we'll start off at the top of the board. That is normally how these things work. Uh Joseph Wool of the Toronto Maple Leafs dealing with a lower body injury. Uh he was on the ice before practice. So this is the first step or at least the next step in his recovery and his return. He's not ready to return yet. So at the very least, he's on the ice. He's working out. This is good. And we'll see how long he ends up being out. And we hear very very little about Stallars either at this point. So yeah, Toronto's goalending is is a bit of an adventure. Uh Chris Tanv, who's been out of the lineup for a while, of course, upper body injury for him. He was spotted in a non-cont jersey at practice, so maybe he's back in a week. Uh maybe he's back in a few days. We'll find out. But they definitely missed Hannah. That would be a huge boost to their blue line if they got him back. Of course, from yesterday's um announcement that there would be a hearing, Bobby McMahon did get the one game suspension, I figured it was going to be one game. And it's too bad, too, cuz the wheel of punishment, I didn't really grab that yesterday and bring it out cuz I thought, it's just going to be a game. So, I'm I'm waiting for something that's a little more major for me to get the wheel and spin it like the Department of Player Safety has been accused of doing. So, yeah, McMahon gets one game, but the discussion about why Gonalves didn't get anything is out there. And of course, the various other incidents that people feel like Department of Player Safety should have done something about that they didn't. Uh this is a common daily uh interaction that players seem to have uh with the National Hockey or that fans seem to have with the Department of Player Safety in the National Hockey League on social media. Um John Carlson uh dealing with an upper body injury for the Caps, but uh he could return tomorrow against the Carolina Hurricanes. So battle for first place in the Metro and getting Carlson back would be a huge boost to the Washington Capitals. So we'll see if he does end up playing. Sounds like he's going to. So that would be a big return for them. Obviously Chrin's having a ridiculous season on the blue line, too. So having those two uh definitely it makes makes them tough. They are playing some of the best hockey in the NHL. So one topic of conversation that's out there right now is about missed game stoppages, challenges for missed game stoppages, and they can take a while. These these are reviews that take a while. Uh last night the Buffalo Sabres, the latest team to have a goal taken off the board because of a hand pass in the offensive zone. Um I'm going to be honest, I've never understood why a hand pass in the offensive zone causes a whistle in the first place. I don't I don't think it's a big deal. I don't um I I think they should be allowed in all three zones. They allow them in the defensive zone. I don't understand why it's not not allowed in all three zones. Obviously, you can't close your hand on the puck, but batting it with your hand, who cares? But anyways, since that's technically a game stoppage, uh Lindy Ruff was unhappy with that ruling. He was unhappy with a lot of things out of last night's game against the Oilers, but he was he was unhappy with that. And I don't think he's the only coach that's upset. Gary Bman was asked about this as well. Uh Bman's response was basically, we don't see a lot of this. We have 1300 plus games in the NHL every year and you're going to have, you know, instances where things come up and it's not a big deal. So, uh, it doesn't sound like the league is overly concerned and, uh, we'll see if coaches complain to general managers and general managers complain and we'll see if things happen from there. But, um, it it is one of those things that, like I said, I don't understand why hand passes aren't allowed in all three zones. If you're going to allow him in the defensive zone, it seems silly not to allow him in the other two. Um, Fowler, Beck, and Angstrom have all been recalled by the Montreal Canadians who are going through their struggles. Uh, Beck and Angstrom, I would expect, jump into the lineup. Apparently, with Fowler, there's some debate about whether or not he's going to play uh during this callup. Uh, that they they want to get a look at where he is in his his development. I I do think that the continued struggles of both goalenders to put up good numbers is why they're calling him up to take a look at him. doesn't necessarily mean that Fowler's gonna play more than say maybe he gets a game while he's been called up and they get a look at him that way. Uh but last night's game I I don't know which of those goals I could put on Dash before he was replaced but there was one there for Montembbo that he needs to be up against the post and so I I do understand the concern and obviously with the Olympic announcement coming out in a few weeks uh the expectation now is Montbo is probably not in the mix for team Canada's goalender. Um, I' I'd love to see Logan Thompson in that mix. At what point does that become a Well, we have to. Uh, Aiden Hill's hurt. Uh, like I said, Montbo's not playing overly well. Um, I I do expect Bennington to be the starter, but Logan Thompson is just playing so well and he's Canadian, so give him a shot. Uh, the Dallas Stars, uh, they extended their road point streak last night with the win over Winnipeg to 13 games. That is a team record. So, they continue to put up points on the road and they continue to be kind of overlooked a little bit because Colorado's just playing so darn well. But meanwhile, uh, Dallas is not very far behind him at all and they have the same number of wins. So, yeah, this could be a very interesting race between Colorado and Dallas. It could go right down to the last couple weeks of the season and it could decide first in the division, first in the West, and maybe the President's Trophy as well. So, we'll see how far Dallas can push this road point streak, but 13 games is very, very impressive. Uh, last night we saw collapsing late in games by teams at an unprecedented rate. Four times in 10 games, 10 games were played last night. Four of them, we saw a game get tied in the final 15 seconds. I did talk about it in last night's review. I think teams are not playing very well when it's six on five and they have the five. And I I I I feel like this is becoming more and more of a thing. They're icing the puck too much. They just chase everything. And it's I I don't know if it's something they're not practicing or if it's just that the team that has the advantage with the six on five just has a better plan, but this is something that I I I think coaches need to work on. Um, I do understand that there's a lot of parody and that blown leads have been a thing for years now, but losing the lead so late and when it's six on five, I I really think this is something that that that coaches could fix with players. Um, but yeah, last night it was obviously a first. I know there's a lot of people that love that. I love all those comebacks and I I don't mind, but I'm also a person that I I really do like to see defensive structure and teams playing the same way with the lead that they played to get the lead. It's very frustrating when a team has the lead and they don't play like it because what it comes across as is they're afraid they're afraid to lose more than they're trying to win. So, if you're, you know, trying to make sure you don't lose, you you very well could end up losing the game. Uh, so we'll see if that's the start of a trend or if last night was just a one-off, right? Uh, Robbie Fabry has returned to the St. Louis Blues organization, a one-year two-way deal. He's going right in the lineup for them against Nashville tomorrow. Uh, he signs for 775,000 at the NHL level. He will be paid 350,000 at the AHL level should he get sent down by St. Louis, but that is highly unlikely right now. They're dealing with a lot of injury issues. And so for Fabri, he'll be jumping right into the lineup. Uh Kyru is going to be out for a while, so it's possible Fabri's in the lineup for a while. And of course with Fabry, the question's never really been one of talent. It's a matter of avoiding injuries. So we'll see how things go for him with the Blues this time around. Uh Shabbat dealing with an upper body injury, of course, for the Ottawa Sanders. He's not traveling with the team on their three-game road trip. So, we will not see Shabbat uh playing for Ottawa during this three-game road trip. Um it it is another one of those injuries that just it feels like we don't know exactly when he's coming back yet, but that seems to be the way of the NHL at this point. Um I'm going to jump down here and then I'm going to move back up. It has been confirmed that the Colorado Avalanche will wear the blue Quebec Nordics jersey when they play in Montreal on June 29th. June 20 January 29th. June, no, January 29th. Uh, the Habs are going to wear the red home jersey. So, big thumbs up for the NHL on that one. Um, I have for years now talked on this channel about how I love to see red versus blue jerseys on the ice because it's red versus blue on every reality show, too. And it's not like we go, I don't know which one's which. We know. We can tell red from blue. So, I think this is this is going to be a beautiful game. We'll see if it's a good game or not on January 29th, but uh it it should be a very beautiful game. And we'll see how many people are wearing Nordik's jerseys in the crowd for that one and how split the opinion might be or if it's just going to be all Montreal and maybe a handful of Quebec Nordique fans cuz I I'm not sure how Nordique fans would actually feel about this. I I I don't know if you get excited that the ABS are wearing the Nordics jerseys or if you're like, you know what would be more exciting? Bring back the Nordics. And I can't argue with that thinking. All right. Uh moving back to some NHL news u with what's going on financially around the league and everything. Uh the players could receive checks at the end of the season. So it's a 50/50 split in revenues. Revenues at this point are projected to hit 6.8 billion this year. And so there's the possibility that with the salary cap being where it is that there will actually be more money coming into the NHL uh than what the salary cap is is budgeted for. So at the end of the year when that 50/50 splits decided, players could receive more money. So this is the opposite of 5 years ago when a whole bunch of that money was being held by the league and the players might might not get it back. Um yeah, that was ugly. I I think players are going to be okay with getting paychecks at the end of the year on top of what they already got. I think they're going to be happy about that. So we'll see what that looks like. Um but the salary cap itself is still unlikely to change. The NHL does not want to adjust the salary cap up. Salary cap this year is at 104 million. Next year it's going to be 113 million.5. So 113.5 million. Uh next season that's a huge raise and is part of the reason why teams are able to sign and keep all their players right now. And the trade market is dead. So the the raising salary cap seems to be doing the same thing as the dead cap or well that the flat cap did. Uh, the flat cap meant that nobody had any money. Now everybody has money, so they just keep their players. It's it's it's weird. I I really thought with the salary cap going up, we'd see a little more movement, but nope. Uh, so the World Cup host cities are narrowed down to 10 in North America and six in Europe. Um, the expectation is there will be one city in North America and one city in Europe that end up hosting the World Cup. And there's also some double IHF involvement as well, which they're going to need if they're going to expand this and make this truly a World Cup. You're going to need to have the NHL and double IHF working together because it's going to involve players who are not National Hockey League players as well. If they really want to make it a World Cup, it has to be anybody, any nation. I I would say that if they could do like a qualifying uh during the summer, you could have a qualifying where you have say six or eight countries and the top four out of those eight end up making it into the World Cup, something like that. Um I think that could be a lot of fun. Um, I hope they have they have fun and they do something different with this World Cup because if it just feels like it's recycled from foreign nations or it's just not quite the Olympics, um, it's going to lose some of its shine pretty quickly. But the World Cup uh, will name its host cities. The plan is to have those cities named uh, shortly after the Olympics are done. I think the plan was to announce it at the Olympics, but with the Olympics and all the uncertainty about the Aurfs and everything and how that's all going to play out, maybe the NHL just wants to make that announcement afterwards. Uh, so that there's there's no discussion of of the Olympics necessarily there. But, uh, we'll see who ends up getting in. And it's been confirmed by Bman as well that both Montreal and Boston who hosted four nations are amongst the cities that are looking to host the World Cup in 2028. So, every other year we'll either have a World Cup or an Olympics. And as exciting and fun as it is now, eventually people do tend to kind of get a little bit uh exhausted with it. So, we'll see if that happens again. Uh it it can happen. Uh but let me know your thoughts in the comment section below. As always, hit like and subscribe in the event you may not have done so already. Thank you guys so much for all your support. It's greatly appreciated. I will talk to you again soon.

  1. Salary cap going up 10% which means revenue going up 20% in just one year.

And American wages are predicted to flatline or slightly drop for the next 5 years.

Something is going to break soon.

  2. Missed game stoppages aren't a big deal at agme 30 of the regular season but they have to be called in the SCFs. Didn't a puck in the nettting get missed in STL Vs BOS in 2019? Not a Bruins fan btw

  3. If Montembeault ain't on the Olympic team, does that mean there will be no French players on the team? There will be Quebec league players like Crosby and MacKinnon, but no French players which makes you wonder what has happened to hockey in Quebec. Having grown up in the days of Lafleur and Savard and Cournoyer and Potvin and Lemieux and so many others, and hearing about how passionate they are about hockey in Montreal, are they just passionate about watching but don't play any more?

  4. Hand passed are illegal in offensive zone because it's dangerous to have guys swinging fists around goalies heads. Getting punched on the side of your head when you aren't suspecting it, is a recipe for disaster.

  5. The Buffalo goal was never going to stand. He either batted it to a teammate with his glove or a high stick, both are no goal. Using your hand invites getting hit with sticks a lot.

  6. No, no and no we do not need no "World Cup"its just a money crab from the NHL fat cats.
NHL brings back a World Cup every four years (right after the Olympics) it’ll just water both of them down.

Look at football, the FIFA World Cup is sacred and prestige tournament because it’s every four years, and they’re never changing that.
Hockey already has the perfect setup. Olympics for the big international stage, Stanley Cup for the club stage.
No need to force another World Cup into the mix.

  7. Speaking of overlooked: the Ducks have won just two fewer games than the Avs and Stars. They just haven't lost as much in OT (which is inflating points all across the league). But being just two wins behind teams that are considered "unstoppable" should raise some eyebrows (and smiles from Ducks fans)
