Apologies if this is old news at this point, but I just learned it today from this article about the Mets.
Oh well, just glad to hear our Braves were part of the bidding. We still got ours in the end. Can’t wait for spring!
Makes me wonder if Suarez was the backup plan or if AA tried both.
Anyone else old enough to remember the Yankees doing this in the 90s? They just outbid everyone for anyone they wanted
I would much rather have Suarez at 3/45 than Diaz for 5/whatever the money would have been. Glad it worked out this way.
TLDR: Diaz wanted $20 mil AAV with limited deferrals, Dodgers were the only team to do that. Braves offered more years but less AAV, Mets wanted big deferrals.
Honestly glad we didn’t. Diaz is damn good but a 5 year mega deal for a reliever is just not good business.
I’ll never forget the Contreras vs Diaz matchups where Diaz looked at Contreras like “you stole my song!”😂😂😂

I don’t hate the ambition, and respect the ability to walk away and not cripple the payroll.

I don’t have any reason at all to believe this because it goes against AA’s nature and everything he has preached about payroll flexibility.
Diaz is absolutely nasty if healthy. Would have loved to see him on the Braves and hate the Dodgers got him. Suarez was def plan B but it’s the best possible second outcome.
