You can have the money for Imai and Bregman because you then move Shaw to 2B and dump Nico and his 12 million for pitching prospects. Or play like the big boys and use deferred contracts. And when Steele returns if everyone is healthy they can flip Boyd or Taillon to get under the cap. They can make it work.
Who's also to say the cubs won't be willing to go over the cbt a bit this year knowing they have well over 100 million coming off the books after the season to dip right back below it.

Oh, you mentioning Dunston. The year the Cubs drafted him first, the second pick in that draft was a 3rd baseman, Augie Schmidt Jr. Flash forward a few years, he was out of the game, coaching the baseball team at Carthage College in Kenosha. I played for him my freshman year (I transferred at the end of the year). I think he might still be the head coach there.
