Danny Jansen Breaks Down Decision to Sign With Texas Rangers, Impressions of Texas Rangers

Welcome to Texas. Um what uh why Texas? What was it what is it that that sold you on the Rangers? >> Yeah. Um you know, throughout my career, I’ve always enjoyed playing in Texas, going to the ballpark, seemed like the fans are awesome. Um and also the team’s always, you know, been competitive and it’s intriguing. I’ve heard nothing but great things about the guys in the clubhouse. So, um you know, the opportunity to be in this organization. I definitely want to be a part of that, you know. So, um I’m excited for it. Um, you get the chance to catch Jacob Deg Grom and and Nathan Evaldi and and Jack Lighter even. Um, Jacob obviously is Jacob and and Nathan’s Nathan. How exciting is that for you? >> Yeah, it’s never been fun at bats, so it’s going to be nice to be on the other side. So, um, no, those guys, uh, been a lot of fun to watch and, um, you know, and see live, but also just, you know, seeing what they’ve done throughout their career and, you know, to be able to be a part of that battery and and and to work with them is is going to be really cool. So, I’m looking forward to it. Try to get as prepared as I can be before spring and and during spring and and I’m looking forward to it. >> Yeah. So, what what does it look like the offseason trying to get to know these pitchers? Yeah, it’s I mean it’s going to be you know get get a hold of some video and stuff and then you know I like to communicate. So whether it’s um before spring or right when spring starts just trying to get some early reps I think is huge. So >> um do all the prep you want and then once you get those reps you I think that’s the biggest part too. So um I think like the beginning part of spring is is pretty crucial. Hit the ground running. >> Okay. Thank you. >> Yeah. Nice to meet you. >> Nice to meet you. >> Go ahead Kennedy. Hi Danny Kennedy Landry.com. Welcome to Texas. Um, uh, building off Jeff’s first question, I guess. What were your conversations like with CY and Skip and Ross kind of as you went through the free agent process? What did they kind of sell you on in terms of coming here? Yeah, I think it’s just a winning atmosphere and um obviously the team is pretty fresh off a World Series so it’s exciting and um it’s a competitive team and you know just the opportunity to come and join that and to be a part of that um is is you know really big for me and you know like I said I’ve always enjoyed going to uh to play at that stadium and being there and and it’s you know beautiful park and um I’ve had a great experience just as a visitor so um I got to see the park as well inside of it and it’s It’s incredible. So, uh, yeah, I’m just really excited about that. And to be a part of a, you know, a winning atmosphere and and in a clubhouse with great dudes is is key. >> The AC is good in the summers as well. >> Yeah, I can’t beat that, right? >> Yeah. Thanks, Danny. >> Stephen. >> Hey, Danny. Stephen Hoggins with the Associated Press. Hey, um, after kind of bouncing around a little bit the last couple years, how good is it to know you got a two-year deal and maybe a third year here? >> Yeah. Yeah, it’s it’s exciting for sure. you know, it’s uh five year five teams in two years or something like that. So, um no, you know, it obviously had its challenges, you know, through those two years of going somewhere new, especially as a catcher. But I think having gone through that and then um you know, going to a new team and and having, you know, to learn guys uh when I was traded, you know, right away and really fast, it’s going to help me along the way. But, um it’s it’s definitely an exciting feeling for, you know, to be settled in a little bit as well. Yeah. Yeah, I was going to ask you what you kind of learned from that. So, but what does it mean to kind of Does it help though coming into a situation with a new manager and really so much is going to be new for so many guys that have already been here? >> Yeah, I guess it I mean it’s going to be brand new to me. So, um so yeah, I guess just ping ponging ideas off of everybody. I don’t know. You know, it’s um haven’t really been with, you know, uh like a manager in his first year with the team, but I’m really excited. I heard nothing but awesome things about him and um enjoyed our conversation we’ve had already. So um yeah, just looking forward to to the whole process and and getting to know everybody and and uh you know to to hit the ground running. >> All right, Danny. Look forward to working with you, man. >> Likewise. >> Uh back to Jeff. >> Yeah. Uh, I completely blew the intro after Rich said to introduce myself, Jeff Wilson, DLS Sports. Um, you’ve played against Kyle uh, Hashoka for a number of years. >> Uh, what interactions have you had with him and what what do you, you know, appreciate about the way he he plays and catches? >> Yeah, I’ve always enjoyed watching Higgy play. I’ve seen him firsthand a lot. when I was with the Blue Jays, he’s a Yankee. Um he attacked I think he had like 20 homers against us when he was a Yankee. So, um he’s a good dude and he’s a good catcher and you know the brief interactions at the plate kind of like how catchers always you know talk a little bit you know hitting and catching and stuff but I’ve always enjoyed it and I heard nothing but great things so I’m excited to work with him. >> Okay, that was all I had for you. Thanks. >> Yeah, >> Evan Grant. Hey Danny, this is Evan Grant from the Dallas Morning News. Um, just quickly, it seems like last year after you got to Milwaukee, um, the numbers against right-handers really improved. I know it’s kind of a small sample, but was there something that you discovered after you got there that that put you in a better position? >> Yeah, I think uh, you know, I’m always trying to evolve. I’m always trying to to tap into more things. I think that there’s way more there uh you know inside me in this game and stuff. So, I’m always looking for that. And I think uh I actually didn’t know that, but uh I think maybe having, you know, different people, you know, working with me and stuff like that might give me another idea. And I’m always open to, you know, trying some different things out and seeing if if it helps and all. So, um I didn’t know that that was that that was a thing, but um I was just trying to compete every day, you know, I was in the lineup trying to give a good at bad, good quality at bad and and uh started feeling more comfortable, you know, once I got there. And I think being traded a first time, so that was the second time I’ve been traded, it kind of helped with going to a new team and and you know, being myself right away. And um so I owe it to the the first time being traded to kind of help me with that. But um yeah, I was just trying to give a good quality at bat, you know, every time. >> Okay. Okay. So, there was like there was no adjustment that that they gave you in in specific. >> We we worked towards my strengths. We really did. And um but nothing nothing in particular. No. >> Okay. All right. Thank you very much. >> Yep. Jared. >> Hey, Danny. Jared Sandler with Rangers TV or however you would characterize it. Uh first question, maybe most important question. Are you a Packers fan? >> A Bears fan. >> Bears fan. That’s unfortunate. How’d that work out? >> Unfortunate. Yeah, it was tough growing up. I I I was born in Chicago. My dad, my mom, my brother, >> um you know, they they I I moved when I was young. I was 2 years old to Wisconsin. And we we live 30 minutes south of Green Bay, so it was tough in high school. Packers won every game, but [laughter] feels feels pretty good this year a little bit. It’s going to be a big one Saturday. >> Yeah. Some big injuries that that could help the Bears out. Uh what uh I know a lot like gets made on the surface about you growing up and and your family being a host family, but for someone who wanted to play baseball, uh how valuable were those experiences for you? And and I know a lot of people talk about the Adam Jones connection, but was there someone who maybe maybe didn’t even make it to the degree that Adam did who had a big impact on you uh and and helped you as you were trying to figure things out as a as a kid? >> Yeah, we’ve had so many great timber rallers. It’s hard to to name them all, but yeah, I still keep in contact. Donnie Langden is a is one that comes to mind. He uh just had great memories. You know, I was a young kid. Obviously, my my older brother is was a huge role model for me. And then having these guys there, too. I mean, baseball is such a passion in our family to see them and see what they went through and then to go to the yard and watch them. We lived real close to the stadium, too. So, it was really cool to have extra role models, you know, in the house. And um but yeah, Donnie, he we still keep a contact. seen me play um you know multiple times now. Um it’s just a really cool full circle. So we’ve had a lot of them. Um it was just it was really cool uh you know early on. Not many people get to experience that and um like I said I you know my dad my mom you know my brother my my dad and brother played baseball and they’re my role models and then I had some extra ones too. So it was really cool to to be around them you know. >> Yeah. And then I always I’m always fascinated asking guys about the plate discipline piece of it and and you have demonstrated now throughout your career. Great plate discipline whether it’s just chase rate, walk rate, stuff like that. Was that something that a skill that you’ve developed? Is that always been natural for you? Is it’s something with your approach and adjustment you made? Like where does that all come from? >> Yeah. Um, I think something that I I definitely developed it for sure. But, uh, I think that it was, you know, as when I was younger and stuff like that is just, you know, so many reps. I don’t know. We were very fortunate. We had a little batting cage in our backyard. My brother and I would be out there. So, I don’t know if I can, you know, owe it to that or owe it to some whiff some intense whiffle ball matches from back in the day as well. But, um, I definitely developed into that. But I think just like also knowing kind of my strengths and knowing that I have to be extra disciplined just kind of with my approach and stuff like that has helped and um you know not being afraid of of two strike counts and and uh just kind of owning owning up to those feelings that you have in the box and and competing. So I don’t know I like I think I was you know I’ve had it young for sure but I’ve definitely developed it for as well. >> Okay. And then last one and I’ll I’ll stop. Uh you you’ve rated so well as a a blocker behind the plate. Um, I guess to what degree, similar question, to what degree has that just always been a natural athletic ability versus something that you’ve worked on and uh and and is there someone who’s been really helpful in in you developing your game defensively as a catcher in that regard? >> Yeah, I can I can talk about a lot of people that’s helped me. I think the the beautiful, you know, thing about the position is you’re kind of like a watered down version of who who works with you, you know. So, through all the rovers and and stuff coming up through the system as when I was younger, I just had a I had a knack for it. I don’t know, just liked it. Um maybe a screw loose or something, but uh just really really enjoyed it. And uh but also, you know, I want to improve, you know, everything else too. Like I’m aware of my numbers and I’m I’m working towards other things and I’m very um you know, I take a lot of pride in blocking. That’s why it kind of took me a longer time to go to the one knee as well. But understanding that I can still do that, you know, very well out of the one knee has really kind of opened me up with, uh, you know, adapting and evolving with some other things, too, especially receiving and all that. So, um, yeah, always had an act of blocking. I love to block. I want to improve everything else as well. >> Awesome. Thanks, Danny. >> Yeah. >> Thanks, Jared. And we appreciate you making note of the Packers injuries ahead of the game there. Um, we will go to Laura. Uh, >> hey Danny. Laura Stickles, also Rangers TV as Jared called it. Um, what’s your offseason plans look like? Where are you and how do you plan to get settled into Texas? >> Yeah. Um, my wife and I live in Chicago. We have three children. So, all all very young kids. I have a three-year-old, a one and a half, and a two week old. So, our off season is, you know, figuring out, you know, life again like that, right? So, it’s uh it’s been a lot of fun and yeah, we’re planning on heading down, you know, to spring training a little early as well and get acclimated and meet some new people and stuff like that and and uh and then yeah, we’re excited about Texas. You know, we we’ve heard awesome things. We have some friends that live there and um definitely looking forward to as a family. >> So, I was going to ask you about Texas because obviously you spend a lot of time more in the north. So, just what are your thoughts about playing and just spending time more in the south? Yeah, look, I I guess I really don’t have that much experience. Used to live in Florida before we had children, but haven’t spent that much time in Texas, right? Just as a visiting player really. So, and that’s brief. So, um yeah, looking forward to experiencing, you know, what we experience and and everything together and seeing what that’s all about. >> And you know, you mentioned that you’d heard great things about Skip, obviously, you know, first year managing this team. Um what specifically though had you heard about him from other guys? Yeah, I just think he’s uh what I’ve heard is just, you know, great energy. Um and he’s always got to bring good communicator as well and and those are those are obviously huge things. So, um yeah, I’ve heard nothing but awesome things. I’m I’m excited to see some, you know, to meet him firsthand and to experience it firsthand, but you know, just those two things are are obviously very exciting. So, looking forward to it. >> We’ll go back to Kennedy. >> Hey, Danny. Uh, one non- baseball question. I saw Rowdy Tles uh officiated your wedding on Wikipedia. >> Yeah. >> Uh, how did how would you have graded his uh officiating for your wedding? >> Rowdy Rowdy did an outstanding job. Did a really good job. Yeah, he had to dress better than me on my wedding day and that’s that’s Rowdy. Um, so uh but yeah, he did a great job. You know, it almost started as a joke early on. We were planning the wedding and stuff like that and then we were like I think Rowdyy’s still doing it and we asked him and he he brought it. He did great. >> That sounds accurate for Rowdy, I’d say. >> Yeah. Yeah, he did great. >> Anything else? >> All right, we’ll leave it there, Danny. We appreciate it. Look forward to seeing you in person at uh FanFest weekend, if not before. And thanks for taking time today. >> Thanks, guys. >> Thanks, Danny. Congrats on the baby. >> Thank you. Hey, [music] hey, hey. [music]
