Quotes from Tom Pohlad from Gleeman r.e. the current approach being a half measure (keeping players but not investing), and how they can be “relentless” in winning but not increase payroll

  1. “Go big or go home” “Thread the needle”

Welp. Nice try Tommy, but let’s get the next Pohlad up there and see if they can make it 2 sentences without contradicting themselves.

  2. I would love to know the rationale of how keeping the team that stunk it up last year, cutting payroll, and adding Josh Bell and a few middling relievers (seen as outside of Fairbanks, the big guys are all gone) can be considered anything other than a half measure lol

Or how 100-115 million is not far off 160

  3. *has first winning playoff series in a generation*

“We’re the hottest team in town!”

*adds nothing new to a competitive roster*

    “We have to be realistic!”

*worst trade deadline in team history*

“Rome wasn’t built in a day!”

    *dismantles half of Rome*

  4. I mean I have to give it to Tom here; he’s an expert of half-measures. He’s sold almost half of half of his team to 3 people/groups who have half a snowball’s chance in hell of buying the team, instead of their purpose of cutting the debt you’ve laid on the franchise in half, instead. Frankly that 50-60m he’s talking about? I’d be surprised if they spend even half that this offseason, and then will wonder why their attendance is half of what it was last season when half a block away any other team is poised for another potential post-season run, yet Tom only has half a mind to understand why that stadium is more than half full, every damn night.

Maybe I’d be half inclined to go to a game this year if Tom gave me half-season tickets behind the twins dugout; but I think we all know I have much better chances living off the half-billion cash option from tonight’s Powerball.

  5. Especially loved LaVelle writing today in the Star Tribune wondering if Liepold will be “pounding the table” to increase payroll. The glazing of the Pohlads at that paper never ends.

  6. God I hope they find out that the Pohlad’s secretly say the N word and they have to sell the team

  7. I know it’s his job, but I don’t know how Gleeman doesn’t uncontrollably laugh when things like this are said.

  8. They should just stop talking and refuse to do these fake ass press conferences. It’s more insulting than anything that they think the fans are this stupid.

  9. Does he know we’re gonna hate him just as much or more than Joe?

Buncha nepo failsons. Must be nice.

  10. Assuming he’s telling the truth (which is hard to believe right now), he’s right that were not 50-60 million away from competing this year. Spending that money when your not ready is how many teams get into bad situations. But if they aren’t willing to spend that extra 50-60 million next year or the year after when Jenkins, Culpepper, and Rodriguez are up with the team, the backlash will be much worse than it is now if they’re continuing to just lie to us.

  11. Such a crock of bs and shame on anyone who buys it.

Remember last week when they said they thought they could compete in 2026?

Tom Pohlad just admitted that was a fraud.

He wants the fans to buy in while refusing to spend money,

  12. People that buy tickets in 2026 are Scabs.

Don’t go, turn up the heat.

Make a Marlin home crowd look good.

  13. I’m not buying into anything until you field a competitive team with a competent staff. I’ve already wrote off subscribing to the streaming service for this coming season. I’m not interested in watching this team until you’ve spent money to improve it.

  14. This really couldn’t be much more offensive. Did he really think we’re idiots? You’re not committed to winning if you’re not willing to invest. He says he’s not into half measures. Probably because that’s too much of an investment. We’ll get a quarter measure and we’ll like it, it so he thinks

  15. I’m watching Succession (only thru season 2) right now and it’s truly hilarious how similar the behaviors of the Pohlads and the Roys are. Like, this could be a season side arc of them owning a team, flip flopping between different failures, different siblings running it. There’s gold here.

  16. He’s certainly correct on that it’s going to be difficult to get buy-in from the fans. As for the rest of his narrative? Horseshit

  17. They just can’t help themselves. It’s almost comical how tone def this fucking family is….

Selling off the entire bullpen, and signing more washed vets while continuing to cut payroll isn’t a half measure, it’s the “relentless pursuit of a championship.”

“Maybe in a few years we’ll get back to spending somewhere around 18-20th in the league, but right now that extra $50-$60M we should be spending on the team is going towards paying down debt from other failed business ventures.”

Jfc, this should be a case study in how to destroy a fan base…

  18. I hope the new minority owners start planning a coup d’état the minute they walk in the door. These 3rd gen nepo’s should be fairly easy to outmaneuver.

  19. Getting fans to buy into and believe – yep that ship sailed long time ago. no buy in until your family is long gone.

Committed to a championship caliber investment – your family’s action over the past several decades, and especially at every moment post 2023 demonstrates that is a blatant lie.

So no nepo pohlad clan, you can take your pathetic PR word salad and shove it, you will never see another dime from me. i am not buying in and any success this franchise happens to stumble upon will be in spite of your family’s best efforts.
