In 1989, Jose Canseco started a 1-900 hotline so fans could hear him talk about his previous day on and off the field. Yes, this was real. Yes, it was as bad as you could imagine.

I was 13 years old in 1989. Jose was my favorite player. I remember a little bit of his antics, more about the issues he had with his wife, Ester, but I did not care. I thought it would be awesome to hear him on the phone. My Dad put a stop to that real quick. No freaking way he was going to let me ring up a crazy phone bill.
“Jose’s hotline is Canseco’s attempt to get equal time. Canseco says he and his agents — he has four — came up with the hotline idea to balance what they feel is negative reporting about the 25-year-old superstar, who has been pulled over by police seven times in the last 15 months and was arrested last year for carrying an unregistered handgun.”
Podcasting before it was a thing. Revolutionary.

200 career SB but 88 CS is a rough ratio.
Edit – on 2nd thought, 69% is better than I’d have guessed for Canseco from his reputation.
Bad? Sounds delightfully crazy
Homie invented social media posts.
I called once and it was busy!
When (900) numbers were the OnlyFans of Gen X during their childhood.
À la David Lynch’s weather reports
Wow I forgot about that one. Can-psycho. He was nuts
He had a gas station on shithole Tropicana Avenue in Vegas recently, too, but it closed down. I heard he did autographs there. I wanted to bring in something from his time with the Sox to get signed, as I was a big fan as a kid, but I didn’t have the nerve to face him.
Most things involving canseco somehow end up being even worse than they sound.
He also has the greatest Reddit AMA ever

Ahead of his time TBH. Could you imagine a roided out Canseco in the age of social media? When he was still relevant that is
Bats
Go, José, go, oiled up like Rambo
Take the needle out my butt and hop in the Lambo
The anabolics got me feelin’ bionic
‘Cause you know I’m indestructible
Why would I imagine it was bad?
Remember when players were trying to hide the fact they went to one of his parties? It was hilarious. 😂😂
Still wild how his Simpsons cameo was competent & has aged fine. It’s no Steve Sax, but still good.
The internet killed 1-900 numbers. It’s a shame.
go Jose go
oiled up like Rambo
take a needle out my butt then hop in my lambo
anabolics got me feeling bionic
cuz you know I’m indestructible, I’m Jose
Sounds way ahead of its time considering what goes on today
So he was tweeting before the internet

Tommy Pham should start a hotline where he’ll show up and fight you
Now they have podcasts to annoy the hell out of us
If you weren’t around in 1988-90 for Jose Canseco you missed out. 40/40 was a HUGE deal, first time ever, plus 3 straight Oakland A’s pennants with the 1989 WS title and The Bash Brothers. Yes I had/have the poster still. His baseball cards were must haves. And then a few years later the ball goes off his head for a homer.
