The Mets have claimed catcher Drew Romo off waivers. In the corresponding move, Brandon Waddell has been DFA’d.

    3.45 era in 30 innings last year. He’s really the worst reliever we had?

  5. Young catcher with options and Torrens a FA after this season. Good pickup. Sucks to drop Waddell, but maybe a 31 y/o swingman will go unclaimed and stick with the org.

  6. Excellent move. His defensive reputation is outstanding and we all know the benchmark for catchers’ hitting is low. About as easy a waiver claim a team can make. Still quite young. Fairly recently he was a top 10 prospect for the Rockies. The Mets don’t have a ton of catchers ready in the upper minors (Suero still a year or two away), so this was a great pick up.

  8. OOTP 25 legend for me he had extremely high defense and framing ratings which was the most important attribute in the game, 80 grade framing would take like an entire point off team ERA. Also a switch hitter which is cool.

  9. Just an idea but…what if they’re going to make Alvarez a 1B (hand injuries and not the best defensively), torrens is here for only a bit more, romo in for a defensive catcher?

  11. Isn’t Romo the guy they cut for Alonso? So we traded Alonso for Romo, effectively. Cool cool cool.

  15. I pulled an auto of his out of a 2019 box of cards more than a year before he was drafted and he immediately became one of my favorites. I was even hoping the Mets would draft him. I’m really excited.

  16. i really hope we keep Luis Torrens. I don’t understand why people would devalue him. He’s one of the best steal stoppers in baseball, great at blocking, and much better baseball IQ than Alvarez. He’s also a pretty effective pitcher for a position player tbh.
    Alvarez should be the backup and can play a huge role as late inning pinch hitter when behind, or DH when Polanco is injured. I don’t mind keeping 3 catchers on the roster though I prefer the 3rd catcher can also play 1B competently.
