REACTION: Luke Weaver reportedly signs with Mets! (Former Yankees reliever moving crosstown!)

What do you think of the additions that the Mets have made to their bullpen? >> I think you pivot away and you go to plan B, right? You could make the case that Diaz might be the best reliever that’s out there in baseball. They lose him and all of a sudden you pivot. The the the question is going to be is you’re pivoting to two guys and Devin Williams and Luke Weaver. Williams was much better the last four or five weeks of the season and the Yankees felt like they could count on him in postseason. The question is Luke Weaver, he saved that bullpen down the stretch in 2024 when Klay Holmes was struggling and and with Weaver to me it seemed like down the stretch and particularly in the postseason he lost a little bit of that confidence. A guy that has a a good fast ball, his best pitch, his bread and butter pitch is that straight change up and I just think he was out of sorts and that’s an easy thing to do when you’re pitching out of the bullpin. Not only >> how easy how easy easy is it to fix that? you could fix it. And and I think the big thing is when a guy is coming off of a down season, and we’ve seen this a lot with relievers, one year they’re really good, the next year not so good. You know, the guys like Trevor Hoffen, Mariano Rivera, Goose Goss, Randy Meyers, the top of the guys that we talk about in the industry in the past, it’s hard to continue to do the same thing over and over again unless you make some changes. You add a pitch, you change your repertoire. The stuff is still there for Luke Weaver. He still has the light stuff. I just think whether it was mechanically, whether it was psychologically, he lost a bit little bit of his confidence, he just wasn’t the same guy the last couple of weeks of the season and into the month of October as he was early on. He was terrific in 2024. And it wouldn’t listen, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to see him bounce back and have another good year. I think if you’re David Sterns, you look at this and you say, “Okay, we’re getting a guy in Weaver that’s pitched in a lot of different spots, started relieving, he he’s been with several different clubs. He’s had some success in the past.” And if you believe that it didn’t have anything to do with health-wise, if you felt like he’s healthy, maybe somehow someway you could find a key to get him back on again. And if they do, they’re going to have themselves a good reliever. >> You You know, Can we talk about the elephant in the room? Isn’t it kind of weird that they keep on making up Yankee? Yes, it it it really is. You when I found that found out about this news, I’m like, “Wow, that seems odd.” You you get Devin Williams and then you go and you get Luke Weaver and But it is what it is. And Klay Holmes, I mean, Klay Holmes was another guy. He made the transformation. >> So, the next move is going to be who? >> I don’t even want to say >> Belly. >> Cody Beller. You took the words right out of my mouth. Yes, >> it could be. It very well could be, but I mean, okay, so you talked about Luke Weaver. He was really good in 2024. Uh, a 289 RA. First half of 2025, it was a 291 RA. It ballooned in the second half, 440 ERA. So, it looks like they’re resolving some of their bullpin issues. Do you see another minor move coming for the Mets or is it going to be something big and splashy? He you know David Sterns when the off season started he talked about run prevention and that’s one of the reasons why they brought in Marcus Simeon and I look at Devin Williams you look at Palano a guy that they’re primarily hoping can play some first base and move around the diamond I just find it hard to believe that the Mets aren’t going to do something big because to me they need they need an impact guy and something tells me that they’re going to be on on Cody Bellinger and you know they may even be in on a guy like Ty Kyle, Kyle Tucker. So, I don’t think the Mets are done. And I know Met fans right now are disappointed on what has happened in the offseason so far this year, but there’s time yet for spring training. And as David Sterns has proven when he was with Milwaukee, he knows how to maneuver and juggle a roster. And I think they pivoted from the plan. I I can understand why Mets fans are disappointed because, you know, they came in with guns ablazing and they were, you know, going to in the first five years they wanted to get to the World Series. They felt like last year, you know, was their chance and they faded down the stretch and it seems like they’re pivoting from that plan. right now. David Sterns is the only one that knows
