The NHL on TNT Crew DEBATE Over Detroit Red Wings’ Potential
You’ve described Stevie Y who you know well as stubborn. Uh he knows what he wants. He’ll stick with it. >> Do you think he would trend toward maybe getting aggressive this year? >> I think Larkin planted the seed for sure. So that’s got to be in the back of his mind. But I think it’s time. Um you know last year was right. It just wasn’t time. And now for sure you get Draper, Malti, all these guys, these scouts are going to be working double time, you know, closer to the trade deadline. And I I would expect something to happen. players become available so quickly. I came available, you know, three, four days before the trade deadline, and I was lucky enough to get to Detroit. So, I’m sure something’s going to surprise, you know, GMs, coaches, and then when that player is available, they’re going to grab him. >> Would you agree? I mean, do you think Detroit at this point, given what you’ve seen, I mean, is it very aggressive? Is it just find someone that fits? Or is it really go for it at this point? I >> I think find someone that fits. I like little minor surgery. I’m not sure if they’re there yet to make that home run home run swing. >> Not they’re not player away. >> No, they’re they’re not player away. That that’s for sure. But I do think they’re still planning for the future. They’re still trying to figure out what their goalending looks like for the future. Gibson Talbet’s good right now. They going to they need to figure out is Kosa going to be that guy who’s playing well for them in the minor. Is it going to be Trey Augustine who’s playing very well at Michigan State? >> That that that’s has to be answered for me. But I wouldn’t mortgage the future >> to do something. But I don’t think they have. >> You still think about the future? >> How long can you think about the future? I feel like at some point you got to look at >> when you go on 10 years. >> I look at them. They’re right now they’re in first in the Atlantic division. Would you say are they a Stanley Cup contender? Would you mortgage the future to win a cup right now? >> They’re a great team. Let’s I mean >> that’s a yes or no answer. >> I’m sorry. >> Are you grilling someone about [laughter] about not >> because I sit on the fence. Hank never sits on the fence. That’s what I’m [laughter] saying. If you missed the players this many years, now you’re top of your division and you have an opportunity to get a great player. Should your mindset still be let’s see for the future? I’m like at some point you just got to >> It depends on the player. I’m with you on that. But I’m not making a deal just for the sake of making a deal. >> No, that’s true. >> Like if Quinn Hughes is available again or someone of that nature, better believe I’m trying to make that deal. >> But let’s say Detroit gets a really good player. Could they win? If they’re top in their division right now, >> I’m not sure if they will, if they could win. >> I look at East kind of wide open in the East. >> Well, I’ll put it hypothetically. If they had gotten Quinn Hughes, would that have made him a Stanley Cup contender? >> No. >> Well, how about forget about the way Minnesota becomes a Stanley Cup? >> Let’s forget about the cup AC. How about getting in and then getting deep in the playoffs? You know, that goes a long way too. I’m all for that. Yes. Your psyche, I guess. >> But it also depends what you’re willing to give up. If you’re getting a big piece like look what Minnesota paid for Quinn Hughes that that was a lot they thought Minnesota was closer >> than maybe Detroit would be to getting to a Stanley Cup. And to your point, if he doesn’t resign, you could win right now potentially if you’re Minnesota with good
Liam, Hank, Ace and Chelly debate if the Detroit Red Wings are ready to win now, and if not, how close they are to contending for a Stanley Cup. Is it time for Steve Yzerman to get aggressive?

They can maintain their position in the standings or at least play well most of the time and good enough to win games and their main issue is truly just goaltending and some slight defensive stuff end rookie mistakes which rookies will get better a lot of fans are starting to see the vision this might be the year that there is a move made but it has to be the right one and I know for a fact Steve won't reach if it's not
Today I learned:
I don't want Henrik Lundqvist as the GM of the Red Wings.
Love ya, Hank, but you're a little too enthusiastic for my tastes.
Players have to want to come to Detroit like Cat and Kane did; you don't overpay a GM just because it makes you marginally better by giving up top assets.
No. The wings are to soft. When the refs stop calling penalties in March and playoffs that’s when the wings lose. Yzerman SUCKS at getting a grind line or a fighter and that’s why it’s been 7 years and Yzerman wings still haven’t made the playoff Yzerman. Wings are the softest team in the league since Stevie wonder has been GM.
As a die hard Red wings fan, let me answer that for you, no they are not. They will remain a decent team but they will not take the next step because both the owner group and the general manager refuse to take any chances to get to the next step. They'd rather wait five more years to see how these guys pan out and then in 5 years they'll wait 5 additional years to see how those guys pan out and we'll keep this repetitive ignorant cycle going.
The Wings are in their youth movement phase with the veterans but it'll take time
Kasper
Soderblom
Edvinsson
Danielson
Sandin-Peliikka
Finnie
This is their future….
Gotta go….
Chiarot
Copp
Rasmussen
Johansson
Compher
Talbot
These guys are dime a dozen players throughout the league and it's time we see Cossa in Detroit
As a Wings fan, I don't want to trade prospects (in the minors or young players on the Red Wings roster) for a Quinn Hughes type player who can help us get into the playoffs this year and maybe even win a round or two, but not make us good enough to win the Stanley Cup, and then leave as a free agent in a year or two.
We shouldn't be trading future prospects until we can get really good players in return, who are likely to still be here on a Stanley Cup winning team.
In the meantime, we have at long last another way to add great players. After years of good drafting and development, we are now just 2-3 years away from many prospects fully adjusting to the NHL, getting their rookie mistakes behind them, and becoming great players. Also, once we reach a critical mass and are seen as a team just one or two great players away from contending for the Cup, it should get easier to sign some of the top-tier unrestricted free agents who want to be those final players who enable a team to win a Stanley Cup. Once those things happen and we already have a shot to win it all, then we can talk about trading away significant future assets for "win now" rental players to improve our shot at breaking through.
I think they are a couple solid trades away based on their current playing style before they can be considered contenders. Less than 5 years they will be in a Stanley Cup Final!
“Minnesota was closer to a ship than Detroit before getting Hughes” is absolutely diabolical
I love the Redwings but even if they finally end the playoff drought this year they are gonna get swept or a gentleman sweep. Hank saying they are a great team was hilarious.
Thanks buddy, stick to what you know…goaltending.
Anson Carter was the only real and honest one but he usually is.
Also this panel is better WITHOUT Biz on it.
Come on, we know how this ends. They get off to a good start, then there’s the break for the in season tournament.
And a lot of their players will be involved, and then they will implode when they return. Book it.
Yeah but the mammoth has tusky
I see why hank never won a cup, he has no clue like you many wings fans who've been ripping Stevie for dealing with Ken hollands terrible mistakes.
We need a superstar. Letting Hughes go was a huge mistake especially since we need help on Defense. I would have gave up a lot for him but ONLY if he was willing to sign long term. I am sick of getting these mid veteran players who can hardly do anything. Its getting old.
I think the simple question that should have been asked is does Detroit have any player at the level of Quinn Hughes? No. So why are we not signing him? Sure just let him go and hope to god someone in our prospect pool plays at that level. Highly unlikely.
Trading to win now is idiocy. Complete idiocy. We are not contenders yet. I can see why teams get wrecked if guys like this are GM's
Chris Illitch is way too greedy & cheap to let them sign anybody.
If McDavid ever wants out of Edmonton you put everything on the table except the goalie. Until then, drafting and free agency.
Kasper and Danielson won't pan out. They should be moved not sat on for nothing like Berggren only to be waived. Rasmussen needs to be moved as well. Detroit had options and Edvinsson isn't a big give in a deal. Yzerman sits on his hands and when he has moved its been a poor deal with the only exception being Debrincat. His free agents only Kane has been a good deal. Yzerman is an overrated GM and to still say 9 years later this is some plan is bullshit. Yzerman with Draper and the whole scouting staff be it north american or European should be fired. The prospects we have are not looking all that good and the fact we are pulling guys from the AHL that were never really on the radar is telling enough as to the dumpster fire Yzerman has going on. The prospects in Detroit are not all that. For anyone to say they have some amazing pool of players they just don't know shit…smh
I remember yzerman saying buffalo and ottawa were "ahead" of us in the rebuild a couple seasons ago.
Then you watch both teams with higher ceiling prospects falter in their own ways.
Stutzle is one of the biggest divers in the league
Brady will abdelkader himself soon with his play style
Owen power peaked early and is now regressing.
Things can change really fast in the new era of hockey, all it takes is one or two high salary superstars declining (no offense to Auston Matthews 😅) to destroy your whole team.
They are 1 injury away from not making the playoffs no its not the time for trade
They’re about 5-7 more years. Yzerman needs 12-16 years according to the wings fans
Its baffling how people continue to question Yzerman and never bring up the fact that they've had ZERO lottery picks during this re-build and ONE top five pick. They continually get screwed.
If that player were the right goaltender I believe it could be one player away. Outside of that their biggest weakness is consistent D for 60 minutes.
