🚨 Former MLB GM Links Mets to MAJOR Trade Target | Mets Rumors | Mets News

A former New York Mets general manager has us making a trade for a starting pitcher. And yes, it’s a front-end starting pitcher. Plus, Luke Weaver signs with the New York Mets. We’re going to tell you what it means next on Metcast. WHAT’S GOING ON EVERYBODY? WELCOME BACK TO ANOTHER offseason edition of Metcast. As always, I am Randy. So excited. my second daughter. Another Mets fan is put on this earth. Regardless of what happens with this team, we are all ride or die. Everybody’s healthy, healthy, and happy. So, thank you to everybody who reached out over on X and on Facebook. Everything is doing great. And while I was away, we got the news the other day. The New York Mets signed right-hander Luke Weaver. Again, another New York Yankee. It seems every offseason we’re grabbing somebody from them. And I love how the Yankee fans shout me out and say, “Ray, you’re grabbing all the scraps. Give me a break. You guys got Ahmed Rosario, Marcus Strowman, you guys got former Mets all over the place. I don’t want to hear it.” Luke Weaver last year didn’t have the best of years, but I can say it attributed a lot to one outing. I believe he won a third or twothirds of an inning, five earned runs. But if you take that one outing away, his RA was in the high twos. But we got to stay with the current statistics. Last year 4-4, 362 RA over 62 in a 2/3 pitch. 72 strikeouts. But one thing I do love is that whip of slightly over one 1.02 whip. And you go out through his career, the year before, 289 RA, his war was a one nine, which is great for a reliever. 84 innings pitched. And you go over to that, you know, the big issue. What do the Mets have major issues with with their starting staff? It is uh with the relief staff, excuse me. It is always the walks to strikeout ratio. It kills us. But you look at Weaver last year 3.6 strikeouts per walk and the year before 3.9. The year before that 5.33. So, you know, he’s going to be throwing strikes. something this pitching staff struggled mightily with. You bring in a guy like Helzy giving up line drives all over the place. Can’t throw strikes. Even let’s be honest, guys. Edwin Diaz, how many times last year did we see Diaz come in the game and walks the first two guys and he’s forced to throw 30 pitches to get out of it. That’s one thing that Weaver doesn’t do. I’m excited about it. Now, listen, you want to say he’s the eighth inning guy right now. I’m not totally comfortable with that. If the Mets add another elite arm to the back of this bullpen, I expect the Neil Nunees to get back to form coming off of his injury, he’ll be back to form. If they don’t overuse Brazaban, which they did a ton last year, we all forget how good he was in the first half before imploding. They used him a ton. I think one thing David Sterns has realized this off season and you might see a lot of minor league transactions, especially if one or two of these trades go down where a few of the guys from the 40man roster disappear and you’re able to add guys. I think we need a ton of depth when it comes to the bullpen. We all saw the article from Adam Adavino talking about how guys were massively overused for the Mets. We’re not happy how they were used and that contributed to their downfall. Now, it’s hard to say that Ryan Helsley just got here and was using was terrible right off the bat, but the Gregory Sodto’s gone. Tyler Rogers gets that. Crazy. The guy’s 35 years old, throws 84 miles an hour, getting a three-year big-time contract from Toronto. I like the pivot to Weaver on a two-year basis. If it works, it’s a great deal for the Mets. If it doesn’t, you’ll have to eat $1 million the following year, but we’ll get to that when that happens. I’m still saying the Mets need to add another big arm in the bullpen. And look, now we’ll get to the next segment. Jim Duket, I I just when you see some of these former general managers talk about what it will cost to get a midline starting pitcher, why not turn to free agency? But I’m going to give him a chance to make his case for this pitcher he wants the New York Mets to go out and acquire. Let’s check it out. >> You go, Gary. In Orlando, there was a lot of talk about a blockbuster tattoo. And there are a lot of names thrown around, right? Not Paveta, but Bogards, Tatis, Lindor’s name was thrown out there. 99% of those don’t happen. So, I think the more realistic one is what we’ve been hearing a lot more recently is a guy like Nick Paveta, their starting pitcher who had a career, >> and I’ll be honest, I like Nick Paveta. The Mets were in on him last year. We can’t forget that >> career season last year. It really uh under three RA because he has three years of control left and they’re trying to shed money would make some sense, I think, on both sides. The Padres’s would get a guy like Sprro who would be a major league ready starting pitcher, a prospect and Morabido. And then one of a guys like Yuing or or or Williams who are close to the big leagues could be one of guys. I’m sorry. I hate to do this to people. What a terrible trade. I like Paveta again last year 13 and5 287 RA pitch 30 start. All is fine and dandy, but that doesn’t mean we just throw out the rest of his career at age he to me he is the biggest risk to being another Shaun Mania and we cannot make that mistake again. He’s not making no money. Three years $52 million. So he’s making a decent amount of money. 2024 414 ERA 2023 404 ERA 2022 45 ERA 2021 453 erra so out of the last four years he had a sub4 erra one time in his last year the guy turns 32 so another guy who’s going into its age 33 season the Mets are supposed to give up Brandon Sprro who’s highly sought after Nick Morabido who will be a top 100 prospect at sometime this year. And AJ or AJ Yuing and Jet Williams, they’re they’re both top 100 prospects now. Jets probably going to be in the top 50. It doesn’t make any sense. Last year, the Mets met with Nick Pavetta. Let’s not forget that. If David Sterns wanted him so bad, you should have got him last year to go out and give up mega prospects. And this is a mega hall. You’re talking Brandon Sprro, Morabido, and Jet Williams. That is a lot. That is a lot. Brandon Sprro’s got six years of control left. Jet Williams, six years of control. Mora Beetle, if he comes up this year, six years of control. And you’re only getting Paveta. I better be getting way more than Nick Paveta. If I’m giving up something like that, especially when we look at what’s out there. You’re telling me Nick Paveta is better than Michael King? Is Michael King getting a five-year deal? Maybe a six-year deal. I doubt it. Go out and spend the money on a starter. We’re not supposed to be that organization. It drives me nuts. We’re supposed to be the organization that goes and spends on players, not because WE DON’T WANT TO SPEND ON PITCHING. We’re going to give up high-end talented prospects. That’s not what the Mets are supposed to be. You have the richest owner in the sport. Why would on earth when there is two or three Nick Pavetas available on the market would you give up a massive trade package for a guy who’s 33 and one out of his last four years had an RA under four. That makes zero sense to me. He’s now supposed to be your ace. He better be your ace if I’m giving up arguably let’s let’s remember 2024 entering spring training last year. went down there specifically. I went down there on those dates that I did to cover Brandon Sprro. Why? Because he was widely regarded as the number one prospect in the entire Mets minor league system. And Jet Williams was number two. So last year’s number one and number two prospects you are giving up plus a Nick Morbido who’s been skyrocketing through the ranks. And I understand prospects are suspects. I just be better if I’m going to trade a package of that nature. I better be getting back a guarantee. And Nick Paveta is anything but a guarantee. >> In the big leagues next year, the Mets get one of their starting pitchers. He wouldn’t be a number one type starter, but a number two solid guy maybe right behind Mlan. And >> so you’re getting a number two and giving up last year’s number one and two ranked prospects plus Nick Morbido. To me, that’s just simply absurd. >> You’d have them under control for three years. That’s the the most important thing is is you have them under control. They’ve been linked to Peralta, >> but it’s nice to say under control for 3 years. He’s 33. We can’t forget that the guy is 33 years old. Alcantra, I think Paveta would rank just the same with those two, but a little higher because you’d have them under control, you know, through the 2028 season. So, I think those are realistic conversations that are that are going on between the two teams, not necessarily that that particular one. But, I think that’s a fair proposal, I would say, for for uh Pava. >> I’m sorry. To me, that is an absurd proposal for Paveta. Look, San Diego’s trying to shed salary. It’s out there. They are selling. They’re trying to shed salary. I’m going for the jugular if I’m the Mets and I’m trading that kind of prospect. Hole. I’m getting Look, you want to tell me it’s Sprout and some lower level minor leaguer for Pavetta? I might entertain that. But I’m not giving all of that up. How many times do we need to bring in middle reliever or starting pitchers? Maniah middle guy. Severino backend guy right now. Peterson after last year’s meltdown. You want to say middle guy? Okay. Migill backend guy. Sanga a middle to backend guy. Can’t stay healthy. Monttos a backend guy who can’t stay healthy and is done for the entire season. We’re really going to sit here in December and rely on what if Nolan Mlan has a sophomore slump? What if the league gets around to him just a little bit and he’s not Jacob Deg Grom next year? The Mets are in a big big stink. You’re giving up that kind of prospect hall. I want a Freddy Peralta or a Tariq Scubble coming back. I’ll even add to that for one of those guys. But that’s the kind of player the Mets need. Nick Paveta does not move the needle for this staff. He’s a serviceable, very solid pitcher. I will give him that. But I need needle movers. I need guys where every fifth day the other team says, “Damn, this is going to be a tough one to win.” He had a near three erra last year. We’re not talking Deg Grom era 2 and a half RA. Now, not taking away from his year last year. It was very solid. But what did that get San Diego? San Diego had Michael King all-around considered ace. Dylan CE who got paid like an ace and Nick Paveta. And where did it get them? Absolutely nowhere. So to give up an absolute hall for a guy who’s turning 33, who’s done it once out of the last four years, no thank you. But let me know what you guys think down in the comments. Would you make that trade for Paveta? And if not, let me know what you would give up or what pitcher the Mets should target. I saw the reports that the Mets were out on Michael King. I’m not totally sold. For me, he would be the guy to get. But that’s all I got for you guys today. Make sure you smash that like button, become a subscriber, and consider becoming a member to get your voices heard on the live. We will try to have a live at some point this week. Not totally sold on it. Obviously, I have the baby, so a lot has to do with my wife and everything going around. But thank you guys for always reaching out, asking how we’re doing. Everything is great. As always, let’s go Mets. God bless.

  1. 4get their starters… get the ex A's closer Mason Miller & have a Nasty Boys BP!!! Look at what the Reds did with 3 monsters in the Pen!!!

  2. I’m sorry but sterns just took the two worst arms in the Yankees pen last year and made them our back of the pen anchors. Lmao. This guy is a clown and ruining our franchise. Now he wants belli to replace Pete. A guy that hasn’t had a single year close to Pete’s worst year and hasn’t had two back to back good years in his career AND most of his HRs at Yankee stadium wouldn’t have gone out at Citi field. He’s Jason bay 2.0 in my opinion if he comes to queens.

  3. Piveta is a 4.0 era pitcher!!! wtf are talking about?! Enough of this idiot ruining this team!!!!! I can’t take it anymore. He needs to go! For that haul we should get skubal with an extension! Just go buy a pitcher like piveta!!! I can’t stand this Mf He’s the worst thing to happen to the Mets since 1988

  4. Pivetta could've been signed last off-season and passed but now he's willing to trade his precious prospects for him? Stearns clearly does not want Jett Williams to ever make the big league roster.

  5. Duqete is not in touch with reality. That said, mets fans put more value than other teams see them. Ewing no. Jett no! These are consensus top 10 prospects in the organization. Sproat is a reliever in the making. I want any pitcher with upside. Mets drafted Sproat TWICE! I hold onto them. I don't want pivettas contract. I kept saying no to Manaea. I thought trying to repeat the most fragile arm in the league was an injury Waiting to happen. Pass on pivettas contract. King seems like a good fit for both sides. He gets a short contract with an opt out to reestablish his value after a bunch of injuries. It makes too much sense on both ends, imho.
