As of right now we are a top 15, top half payroll team. Higher than notable teams like SEA and MIL, don't know if we add any more but I think that 10-15 spot is our sweet spot. Top in our division….I think this should lay to rest the Chris I is cheap talk…we are spending plenty to be able to win this division, this is now ALL ON SCOTT.

  1. I wonder what the payroll will be in 2027 if they keep the same team together… $240 million? They could probably extend Flaherty and Torres at the same AAV for longer deals – if they wanted to keep them. Mize is probably going to get something like 3-4 years at $20 million AAV if he pitches like last year. Carp, Tork and Greene would get nice arb raises. Vest too.

  2. Yeah not that bad! Hey we could be 17 you know! This is why we are considered small market and why things are the way we are. We’re not the 15 best fanbase are we?! Let’s strive to be higher. Let’s have higher expectations from our owner. Oh well 15 ain’t bad… let’s set expectations higher as a fan base!

  3. Skubals arbitration raise, Flaherty taking his opt in and Gleyber the QO accounts for a good chunk. That’s a solid meh from me so far.

  4. 8-12 is where they should be. A perennial playoff team should be in that area if you aren’t in an east coast west coast big tv deal.

  5. To be incredibly fair like 70 of this is just Javy, Skubal’s *projection* and Torres. I know what your point is, it’s not Illitch’s fault, but the breakdown is so bad, and the Torres contract is still cheap in that it’s a 1 year deal.

But I agree, Scott is just bad at being a POBO, man. He’s not a good trader, he doesn’t find surprise value like some guys do, and I don’t know if he’s bad at negotiating or if he’s making the org stink but his free agency record is also not good.

His best signings are Flaherty and Torres, a guy so in demand he’s one of a handful to ever accept the QO. The biggest contract on this budget was from Al. At this point I doubt Harris could convince someone to sign for that long.

  6. The Tigers last time I checked were number 24 in team value and revenue, the lower teams are all pretty close to the same numbers. I forget that for many owners it’s really just a business. Spending money needs to be reflected by an increase in profit in the bottom line for any business.

  7. Gleybar and Flaherty and Tarik. Tigers need to trade Tarik for a haul and get out of these bad contracts including Baez.

  8. Lets break it down:

    Skubal’s arbitration case: 22.5 Million
    Baez: 24 Million
    Gleybar T: 22.025 Million
    Jack Flaherty: 20 Million

which would equal 70,525,000 of the total 165 million cap space or 42.74% of the cap between 4 players.

  9. He’s the 3rd richest owner in all of baseball barely cracking the top half of the league ain’t cutting it. Spend your pizza pizza money or sell the team

  10. Because in 2012, we were top 5. Little Caesars and Chris’s Parking Lot Empire all seem to be doing great, so there’s your problem. Hot n Ready’s didn’t get cheaper, last I checked.

  11. A team outside the top 10 in payroll has won exactly 1 world series in the last decade. And that was the Astros who literally cheated to do it. Very few have even made it. Are you happy if last year is essentially this team’s peak? Personally I’m not. I want my team to spend more to compete for a championship.

  12. People love to ignore that Chris has actually spent $. It might not be on the biggest names but Chris definitely spends.

  13. I think it just shows how poorly the money on the Tigers is distributed.

Let’s be real though. Teams that are in the top 10 in payroll win the World Series. That is what has happened for many years now.

  14. Scott Harris isn’t flawless, but the Tigers are in a better spot now than when he took over.

  15. We have the same team as last year + KJ

If this is all we do it’s unacceptable. To burn a 3rd and final Skubal year would be a disgrace.

But at least pizza boy will make another 100,000,000 this season.

  16. Correct. I have no idea why people think he is. Also look at how much he’s spent on the development infrastructure, the staff, the fucking stadium. Also look at the way money has been spent on the Wings.

  17. Detroit has room to extend Skubal at market value and add a big bat or a couple mid bats based upon revenue. Obviously they can’t do what LAD or Yankees do, but they have room to add a couple pieces and retain their superstar pitcher.

If Skubal walks, yes, Illitch is being cheap.

Our window is right now while several other younger players are under arb. Once Tork, Greene, and a few others require extensions then we’re looking at not signing people.

Again, the one proven superstar on our team is Skubal. Top 2 two pitcher. Tork, Greene, and other players could end up wanting more than they’re actually worth.

If we lose Skubal for nothing then that’s a sign that while Illitch and Harris are in control Detroit will never really compete for a World Series.

  18. I think they’re on a budget so they signed a couple of shrewd arms and that will be the end of FA. Went from like 155m to 165m.

  19. spending more than notoriously cheap SEA and MIL isn’t exactly anything to brag about. if this is all they do this offseason, it’s extremely underwhelming and ridiculous.
