Whatever the moment, it’s never ordinary at bet 365. Welcome in to the CHO Blackhawks postgame show. 4-1 Montreal wins the game. A late empty netter from Nick Suzuki uh gives them their fourth goal. Uh like I said in the cold open, four in a row, six of seven. Uh it’s not good. It’s not going well. Um, look, um, this is a team that without Connor Baddard does not have enough talent right now and one goal is not going to get it done. You cannot expect Spencer Knight to stop 35 shots a night. Um, I don’t have a problem with an effort. I have a problem with the execution. I have an an problem with some of the decision- making. Um, but boy, this is just it’s going to be a slog until Connor Bard comes back. Um, but frankly, I I was expecting a little bit more tonight. >> In the pregame, we asked who’s going to be the first guy to step up in the absence of Conor Bard, cuz really no one has, and we got Frank Nazar scoring a goal. Yep. We got him uh showing up and and having a very Frank Nazar performance. um [snorts] highest rated player by pretty much all the metrics in this game and and he was the most noticeable. Um so baby steps next game. Who’s who’s going to be the second player that wants to step up in in the absence of Conor Bard? Maybe we can get two guys that want >> to we got to say Spencer Knight stepped up too. He’s been doing it all year. >> That’s fine. But but that’s that’s Spencer Knight. That’s that’s we’ve had him all season even with Conor Bard here. I’m this is the biggest thing aliling this team is right now is going to be the absence of Connor Bdard. So, who’s going to step up and and and be there? Frank did it tonight, but it can’t just be him. And I the the the thing that’s um upsetting me tonight is you you look at the these shots on goal numbers, right? It looks insane. 35 uh to 15 for Montreal tonight. Uh the Blackhawks had 30, let’s see, what is this? 33 unblocked shot attempts tonight. 15 got on that. That’s bad. >> Yeah. >> The the missing the net um when you not only when you get a decent look, but missing the net on a on wide open looks, you can’t have that. I I just that’s I don’t know. You can’t have a le for me. You can’t have a less than 50% uh rate of shots unblocked missing the net. That’s that’s not going to do you any good. >> Nope. >> So, we’re we’re talking about, you know, this team needs to have a more uh shoot first mentality. You need to have guys be able to step in with with with without Bard here. 33 unblocked shots on net. Like, okay, I can live with that. You got to get 20 or more of those on actually on the net, especially tonight against Jacob Dobish. We heard him. Sorry, >> Dovich. Dobish. >> Um, you have to get more on him. You had You had to challenge him more tonight because he was fighting it. Yep. >> And you got every shot was a struggle. >> Yeah. So, I just that’s that that’s the thing to me that is going to be as a as a collective from the group really frustrating is just not being able to just get it on net. Like they were shooting that’s fine, but unblock shots not getting to the net is at that rate is is that’s that’s too high of a rate of miss shots. >> Yeah. And it it felt like there was more of a concerted effort from the team to uh try early to shoot a little more and then in the third obviously you’re down so you have to try to start shooting a little more but still you win a game with 15 shots on goal. That’s just not >> that’s not enough. And and how many of them came from Nazar and Nazar ended the game with uh >> two shots and nine shot attempts. >> Shot attempts >> that he’s that’s almost all the offense his entire team had. and and we said in the pregame players to step up and I said you know what it feels like more often than not night after night it’s the veterans letting you down. Who were the two players when the Hawks had the empty net down 3-1 they’re in the offensive zone and they’re trying to you know get back in the game. It’s Andre Burkosski and it’s Tavo Terrain and they’re a foot they’re as close to each other as you and I are. Burkoski tries to pass it to Tavo. He loses it. It spits right out to the middle of the ice. There’s Nick Suzuki who puts it in the easiest empty net goal you’re ever going to score from the defensive zone. It’s just the veterans did nothing in this game. Nothing. It was all Frank Nazar. It was all Spencer Knight. That was it. That was it. I you know I guess I’ll say Matt Grizzlink had a nice game because it was a nice pass to give Nazar the goal but it’s just really frustrating when the guys that you should be relying on to pull you up when your best player is out the guys who have been through it. Two-time Stanley Cup winner Andre Burikovski cup winner Tavo Terrainan you know Tyler Bertusi Connor Murphy on and on and on. There’s got to be more from these guys. They’ve got to find a way. And I just I don’t know. It’s extremely aggravating. And I get where Hawks fans are at. And look, Nick Lordis uh shank the shot late, was pretty much a non-factor the whole game. So maybe he’s not ready yet, which is fine. It’s understandable. See, this is this is where we’re at. Like Baddard is having this great year. Give him a heart trophy now right now because he’s proven to be the MVP. >> Most valuable to their team, Conor Bedard. Take a look. Um, so it’s and look, Lordis was probably not expected to be ready this early. They didn’t want to call him up, but Bard goes down. They got to call him up. Um, so he needs more time. You still don’t have Canerov here. You still, you know, you don’t Fondell’s not here yet. There is help coming, but it’s not here yet. And for for the time being with Bard out, I think this is how it’s really going to look. It’s going to be tough. It’s going to be one goal, two goals, and no matter how well they play defensively, it’s not going to be enough to win games most of the time. It’s just not. And I’m I’m trying to look at what a solution could be. And are people tweeting at me saying the Hawks should go trade for so- and so veteran? >> They’re not going to do that. >> Like, what’s another Tavo gonna do? What’s another, you know what I mean? Like, you’re going to bring these guys in. you’re gonna give up a prospect that you might like or a high draft pick to bring in some help right now and they’re not gonna make that big of a difference right away or at all really if you’re bringing in a veteran player and then you’re taking a roster spot away in a year or two from somebody you’re >> not doing that >> like do you call up Kevin Kchinsky who’s a puck moving defenseman but if every goal you give up is the end of the world because you’re only able to score a goal or two is that the right move or do you have to have the most like the most solid defense you can possibly The the answer is there’s no solutions right now. There are none. This group of guys and maybe Nick Fo plays against Ottawa. Maybe he’s back against Philly. Maybe not. >> That’ll be a little bit of help. >> This team’s performance isn’t a Nick Felino. >> Nick Fo is not going to make a huge difference here. So, I mean, >> they’re going to have to figure it out on their own. >> Yeah. >> I think something could be said for Felino being around the team on the bench. you know, we know that he has he has some sort of impact that way. Um, but yeah, the the on ice performance is not going to be turned around by Nick Celino. Um, yeah. I mean, it’s as as as we’ve [snorts] said, um, as Jeff Blash said, as the players have said, it’s an everyday league and this is this is a a stretch of games now until Conor Bard gets back, which hopefully it’s it is true to the, you know, time frame of of maybe by early January, he’s back. First week of January would be nice. That’d be a nice uh way to start the new year having him back. But this is a time where where this group is going to have to find another layer to their identity. You can have the identity of, you know, Conor Bard is our team. Conor Bernard is our offense. Um, which he was. 49% of of all goals this season up to his injury went through Conor Bard. Um, but you got to find out what you are without Connor Bdard because the the teams of the past with the Blackhawks when they were having the the cup success, they didn’t play 82 games a year with uh Jonathan Tae, they didn’t play 82 games a year with Patrick Kane and Marian >> just doing it all right >> like Yeah. And and obviously that’s a lot different when if you don’t have a Jonathan Taes, you still have Marian Hosa and Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp yada yada yada down the line. But you still had to find guys that night in and night out if you didn’t have guy A, guy B stepped up. And this is this is a chance where, you know, you don’t have Conor Bard. He’s guy A tonight. Guy B was Frank Nazar. But you got to have guys C and D also available. And it’s it’s going to be a challenge. It’s going to be a challenge for those for for those players to to figure out who those those guys are going to be. I’, like you said, I’d like it to be Andre Burkovski and Frank Nazar and Tyler Bertusi and Tavo night in and night out being like, “Don’t worry, guys. I got this. I can step up and and I I’ve been here before. I can step up and and and fill this gap.” And we just haven’t been able to see it. So, um, you know, even if Baddard was out for the year, there’s no transaction or roster move coming to replace him. It’s just that’s we’ve been we’ve been under Kyle Davidson’s uh you know regime as GM long enough to know he’s not doing that. So even with Bard being out two to three weeks, he’s not making any trades to add veterans. Um he’s not going out to try and find extra help. The extra help is going to have to come from from within the organization already. And I mean if if they keep losing in regulation, uh even you know when Bard gets back then I think all thoughts of oh maybe Murphy and Dickinson and so on and so forth of like maybe those guys stick around because this team is pushing for it. if if they aren’t able to find that that secondary group who’s going to, you know, shoulder the load offensively and and and carry this team with Bard out, then there’s going to be no hesitation to sell, which was the expectation this year anyways, >> but there the the the expectations of, hey, maybe they’re chasing for the playoffs, it’ll be out the window. So, it’ll be it’ll be Cell, it’ll be young guys. That’s that’s just what it’s going to end up being. >> Yeah. I And I think that’s it seems to be what a lot of people want is all right, here we are, Bard’s out for at least, you know what, four more games, five more games. Um, at the very least >> Saturday >> and you feel like >> maybe they’ll win one, maybe they’ll win two at least five more games, >> right? But there’s going to be a tumbling down the standings and like let’s be honest even with Bard back he’s not going to Conor Bernard if Bidard played in this game would it have been closer probably but I it doesn’t mean they’re going to win or doubled up in shots. I don’t think there’s a single player in the world that could come into this game and and rescue it the way they played. Now, there’s a big ripple effect to having deeper lines. And yeah, we all know that, right? Of course. But, um I that’s it. I And maybe we’ll look back on this and say, “Well, geez, thank God they fell apart there around Christmas because uh there was this temptation to hold on to those guys you mentioned.” like, well, maybe, just maybe, they kind of owe it to these guys to push for a playoff spot. Maybe they fall a little short, but at least they’re playing. >> Yeah, but that’s that that’s only the that’s only the thought if you get past the Olympic break and you’re and you’re cha and you’re actually in a spot or >> That’s the point I’m making is is maybe now you’re finding out earlier than expected that, you know what, this team is not going to compete for a playoff spot. So, yeah, move on. Get what you can. Maybe you can bring back a young player or two and try to do a, you know, a resurrection project with someone. Maybe you get a a better maybe you package a couple guys for a better draft pick. Look, and we’ve seen Kyle Davidson trade up all the time uh in the draft so he can get those lower ones, trade up to higher ones. See what happens. Um, but at this point, if this is how it’s going to go, and look, I’m not I’m not trying to punt on the season here. Right. It just feels like you watch today’s game and it’s frustrating as hell, but like it didn’t feel like a massive underperformance. It felt like they performed to their capability, right? Like it was just it wasn’t like a huge like, oh, this guy sucked and that guy sucked. It just they just don’t have the talent to hang with talented teams. and Montreal, who most people would say have underachieved expectations so far this year. They’re a way more talented team about three years ahead of the Hawks in their rebuild, right? They have Suzuki, they’ve got Caulfield, they’ve got Slevosski, they’ve got Demod all playing. Then they went and they got to the point where they went and acquired a Noah Dobson last year and he’s a big part of their thing because they’re ahead of the Hawks in a rebuild. So when they saw an opportunity to add, they took it. I just I don’t know. It’s it’s it’s just it’s very hard in the aftermath of a loss to be like, “Okay, how do we fix this right now?” And I know there is a desire to accelerate this rebuild, but I just don’t if someone has a specific let me know like who who is it who is the player that is truly attainable, tradable that the Hawks can go get that’s going to make a difference here? I don’t know. Is it Alex Tuck or Tage Thompson from Buffalo? I don’t know if Yarmmo Kakalign who just took over his GM is in a hurry to move those guys now. He feels like he can resurrect what they’ve got based on the talent they have. They’ve got a ton of talent. The Sabres are hugely underachieved. So, I don’t think now they’re going to start trading those guys. >> I mean, that is usually what the what the Sabres do is they just >> Well, that’s why they fired Kevin. >> They go halfway through a rebuild and then they trade everybody. >> Yeah. Yeah. So, I don’t know. We’ll see. And that’s what people want to that’s what people want to do after tonight’s game apparently. They want to go halfway through a rebuild and then trade everybody. >> I’d rather I’d rather not do that. >> That’s how you become the savers. Yeah. So, all right. A bunch of you did during the break and we appreciate that. Let’s get to a hundred here before uh the next break zone. History Racer $2 says, “Is the slide more on the vets or young guys struggles?” I think it’s both. I think you I think some of the young guys you have here Moore and Levinov and uh Lardis are learning at the NHL level that like I don’t you can’t expect especially the forwards Moore and Lordis to be the guys who are going to pull the Hawks out of this. They are learning on the fly. They are learning on the job. Uh Oliver Moore most nights is a very effective player. He’s really fast. He is tenacious. He makes things happen. The scoring hasn’t necessarily been there yet, but you’re seeing the flashes and that’s usually the last thing to come for a young player is the production. >> Yeah, I I think I think the realistic outlook for Oliver Moore is not that he’s going to be like a 60point guy, but he’s he’s going to be someone that you probably play more in a middle six role and you utilize his speed and his motor and his and his tenacity. And you know, maybe when he’s fully realized, he might be a guy that puts up maybe a little bit more production average than I MCV does, but still kind of plays that same style where he’s like really good on the PK and you know that and and you need guys like that when when a team is successful. Um, this is Nick Lardis’ third game in the NHL, and I think he had a golden opportunity to get his first goal in the NHL, uh, late in the third period, but biffed on a wideopen net on on on a a one-timer attempt. >> Um, hopefully that’s not going to happen again, especially for a guy who’s not even a full full season removed from scoring 71 goals in the OHL. Um, I feel like, you know, this the the scoring at the NHL level will get there for Nicolardis, but it’s it’s not going to happen overnight. Um, Ryan Green’s super effective, but again, he’s not a big point producer. He’s >> wind. >> Oh, Jesus Christ. It sounds like uh when you do the Saran Wrap to make it sound like thunder. Anyways, um yeah, I I think the the idea is that these these young guys grow. Um but it’s it’s it’s hard to expect it to happen overnight, but you’re thrown into a situation where you don’t have Conor Bard, >> right? >> Like >> I love to see Lardis and Bernard play together. >> So, >> yeah. Well, we’ll wait. We’ll wait till it happens. Um, but I I I like the idea though of having those three, Lardis, Green, and Moore playing together because, you know, Lardis and Moore built some chemistry playing in Rockford. Uh, and that gives those guys, I mean, honestly, skill set wise, that’s a very good complimentary role. You have a scorer in Lardis, uh, you know, at heart. You have a a good two-way cerebral player down the middle in Ryan Green, and then you have a guy who’s going to go and be able to hunt pucks in Oliver Moore. and all of them have a little bit of a scoring touch that we’ve seen at the, you know, either AHL or NCAA and juniors level. So, I’m I’m interested as time goes on, however long Bard is out and that trio st sticks together, I’m interested to see how how that develops. So, yeah, you would want that to kind of develop um some some chemistry and and be able to kind of maybe get a a secondary scoring run going for those guys, but then at the same time, as the question was was talking about, is it vets or these young guys? The the you want the vets to be able to kind of step up and and and pull their weight. And it’s again, it’s it’s Conor Bard being the the driving force of the offense, but you know, Tyler Batusi is still here. >> Yeah. Andre Berkovski is still here. Um, Tavo Terrainan like we can’t expect him to score goals, but I I would like I would like for him to >> he’s not fully healthy. >> Sure. But I still would I still would like for him to have a mentality that’s >> not so passive offensively, literally with passing so much. >> I don’t know. I I agree. It is it is a bit of both that the young guys are being put into a really difficult spot and then also the veterans aren’t pulling their weight so far three games without Bard. >> Yeah. And um you know the there’s no nothing is final on any of these prospects. Like to think that Oliver Moore is what he is only and that Nicolardis is what he is only and Ryan Green is what he is only and Arnold Lechnovv is not all these guys have way more growth to go. And I’m going to remind people and I know a lot of Hawks fans jumped on board when the Hawks got good in the 2010s and that’s great. That’s fine. We’re happy to have you. There was no excuse to be a Hawks fan before that. I was just mentally ill. It’s fine. But if you go back and watch the first few seasons of Duncan Keith and Brent Cabbrook, it is a freaking adventure. It is, oh my god, what are these two guys doing? >> Yeah. >> Why are they falling down? Why can’t they skate? Like, it’s just it was bad bad. And then they had years at the NHL level to develop and get better and better and better. and then Kane and then Taves arrived, then Hosa and then boom, they were they were at their prime when that talent arrived and the Hawks were off to the races, right? It takes there’s I don’t know there’s no one that is instantaneously turning their team into a contender. There’s a lot of Mlin Celerrini love in this chat. The Sharks aren’t winning the cup anytime soon either. >> Uh, >> no, they’re not winning the cup anytime soon. >> No, but I mean, >> are they ahead of the Hawks right now? They’re right now in a playoff spot. >> Sure. Hawks were earlier in the year and the Sharks jumped over them. >> New York Islanders are in a playoff spot with Matthew Schaefer. >> I I mean, I’m not I’m not I I agree. It’s it’s that’s extremely rare. Um and those teams also, the Islanders weren’t the worst team in the league. They went from 10th up to one to win the lottery. So, it’s not like they were completely devoid of talent. Um but yeah, I mean in in in this Hawks case, like there’s all these all these young guys still have a lot of growth to do. Um Frank Nazar, as much as he’s proven so far in his NHL career just now, uh just recently surpassed a full game, a full season’s worth of games in the in in his career. Ardam Levchenov, this was game 50 in his career. Um, >> freedom. >> You got Oliver Moore. Let me see what what what game was this for him in his career? 21 on the season. Game 30 in his career for Oliver Moore. Ryan Green 35 career games. Um, you know, Alex Vic 211 career games and he is the grizzled vet uh of amongst the young young group of of players. So there’s a ton of growth needed. Um these these players are not their their fully formed versions of themselves yet. So it’s there is going to be uh brighter days ahead. It’s just, you know, it’s it’s a situation where you lose Bard and and it and it just it just puts a bright spot on the lack of secondary options that this team is left with. And it’s And it’s tough because you coming off a season where Ryan Donado had 31 goals. I know we weren’t expecting Ryan Donado to replicate 31 goals. >> Um >> he’s still buried in the bottom six though. I mean >> he’s on the fourth line today. >> I mean that to me maybe if you’re thinking about making a change somewhere maybe it’s Ryan Donado. Maybe he needs time in the top six. I don’t know. I I just I know you just can’t break up the Dickinson line looking at the uh line stats today. the uh Toninado Doc Donado line was was a Hawk’s best by far. Um 64% Corsy uh scoring chances for were three four five against your uh Nazar line eight scoring chances for four against. So that was in terms of scoring chances which is what uh Jeff Flashel looks at >> that was your best line that’s obvious Dickinson line one scoring chance four or five against but they are drawing the toughest matchups when the Hawks have the ability to line match they’re on the road so they have the last change so you can’t dictate like you could at home and then Green Moore and Lardis were 33% Corsy three scoring chances four five against so um you know meanwhile Ardam Lechinov who’s getting a lot of conversation in chat had 10 scoring chances is four and 10 against uh for the Hawks say at all strengths. So, um here’s the thing and I think yes, are the Sharks better than the Hawks right now? Yes, that the your record is what your record is. There’s no doubt about it. I think the the reason it feels a lot different is because the Sharks went for more forward draft picks with Will Smith and and obviously Celabbrini. So their high-end offensive talent is here already. Whereas the Hawks focus on defense. So they went with Lechnov. They went with Renzel. They went with Kchinsky. They got Nazar too. Nazar is there. Mo is here. They’re not fully developed yet. >> But Canerov and Fondell and whoever they probably draft this year. >> Could probably be a forward. You still got Mason West too. Who knows what he’s going to be? Nester Sil is putting up big numbers in college. So there is offensive help coming. But the Sharks offensive talent has arrived already where the Hawks defensive talent has arrived. >> They started this process before the Hawks. >> Right. So what I’m saying though is they’re the Hawks NHL ready prospects are more defenseman and that’s they take longer to develop historically. The production comes later for them historically and they need what do you say like 150 200 games before you can judge an NHL defenseman. >> 300 according to Chris Pronger. >> Yeah. >> Well, he seems to know a little bit something about defending. >> You would think. Yeah, >> that seems like a lot, but sure. >> But like how many is Alex Classic playing? Are we >> 21? >> Are we fully Do we think we fully know what Alex Flask is yet? Do we think he’s >> maximized what he’s going to be? >> I don’t think so. >> I don’t think so. No. I I think there’s probably could still be more growth there. >> Look, I’m not I’m not going to tell anybody to, you know, to enjoy what’s happening right now. It’s not It’s not enjoyable. It’s not. But I mean, this is what a rebuild is. And there are a lot of question marks here. And if they don’t work out, if Oliver Moore never pans out and Ardum left never pans out, then heads will roll. >> Look, if if >> I just I just think I think it’s way too early to reach any sort of conclusion on anyone anyone yet. >> Yeah. I I’ve I’ve you’ve you’ve got a lot of of talent that still isn’t touched professional ice in North America and and Kyle Davidson laid out the the plan of it being a rebuild and it being a long-term plan and it going to take patience and um rebuilds don’t flip a switch overnight and if you like let’s say they you 2023 draft they don’t get Bard you’d be at a point where you have either Adam Fantil or Leo Carlson still very good players not Bard >> um but you would still be going through this whole process you’d still be going through the process of you know the development of Korchinsky and Nazar and Renzel and Levinov and Moore you’d still be going through all of this you just wouldn’t have the the marquee guy of of of Conor Bart And I think getting Connor Bardard accelerated the thought process of a lot of people, but it didn’t it doesn’t put the rocket fuel on the rebuild when you didn’t even have a fully functional spaceship to strap the rocket to or whatever. I don’t know how space works. Um, >> sounded right. So, so it’s it still takes time even though you have a guy like like Conor Bard and if if in you know I I I think a few weeks ago we might have said oh this year might kind of turn a corner in the rebuild and I was optimistic that it was happening. It’s it’s definitely stalled out right now. Um, but if in two years we’re still well short of talking about actual playoffs, >> if next year if we’re in the same place next year, it’s it’s time to start. >> Yeah. You’re you’re getting to a point where you’re like, okay, what’s what’s the step to get things over the hump? Because you would think, you know, you got a guy that’s architect a lot of this and Kyle Davidson, but what’s going to be the thing that gets it over the hump? And I clearly this is a fan base that doesn’t have a 6, seven year plan of patience. >> No, certainly not. And it’s understandable because, you know, after the last cup was won 11 years ago, um things were not great then. So, the actual rebuild feels a lot longer than it’s been because the Hawks have been bad for a lot longer than when Kyle Davidson took over. >> Yeah. They didn’t rebuild until Davidson >> 2022 was GM >> is when the rebuild started. So, it’s it’s about to be 2026. So, it’s, you know, it it’s going to it’s it’s going to we I don’t know how many more ways we can say that it’s going to take time. You got to be patient. We got to hit the break zone. Uh we come back, there’s another super chat or two we got to get to. So, uh, hit that like button. We’ll talk to you in two minutes. >> Winter is here. Kyle Davidson deserves to be fired. Not blaming Blashel. We need a player who will produce with or without Bard. Tavo and Barakovski have been soft. BL needs to make line changes. >> So this is now three games without Bard. >> Yes. So what he’s what he’s done hasn’t really led to the results you want. So yeah, I agree. You want to change up the lines, go ahead. I’m I’m I’m fine with changing that up. I’m fine with experimenting. I don’t know if Jeff Blau is going to do it because as we’ve talked about many times, he has said himself um prior to the season that he’s learned lessons about not trying to do knee-jerk reactions uh with regards to line changes or anything like that. So, we’ll see what happens. But, um yeah, I if you want to throw things into a blender and see what comes out the other end, sure. I’m I’m I’m all for it. What was the other part of the >> fire Kyle Davidson? >> Yeah. Again, um the get a player who can play with Connor Bard. Who? Brandon, I honestly What is the What is >> I can predict what it’s going to be. >> Option besides >> they should have drafted Deminov. >> Okay, I agree. They should have thought we’ve done that show before >> about a hundred of those actually. >> Okay, so yeah. >> Yeah. So, >> but are >> are we are we going back to free agency in 2024? And and >> you know, instead of Tavo, it’s who? Jake Gensel. >> They tried. >> They tried. >> You want to come here? >> You know, instead of Jake, is it Joe Valeno? You want to keep him around? Cuz that was the that was the the swap. >> Would you rather have Joe Valeno or or Andre Burikovski? Burkovski is an upgrade over it. >> So, you know, go sign a free agent. who go make a trade. They’re not making a trade to add. That’s just that’s not the philosophy and the position that they’re in. Davidson is is is using his draft capital and his and his young players um for, you know, for being the guys that that this that this next era is going to be on the shoulders of. And not all of them are going to be here. Uh, but not all of them have even had a chance to play professionally yet. And you got five draft picks in the first two rounds of this year’s draft class. >> I’m sure they’re not going to use all five of those picks. Maybe one of them’s used in a in a trade to get a player. More than more likely, I bet one of them is going to, you know, one of those seconds or two of those seconds are going to be packaged to get back in the first round. get three first round picks again because it’s still loading and reloading the prospect pool for the eventual cycle of players coming in and out, >> right? Uh some people mentioning Trevor Ziggress. Do you want Trevor Ziggress? >> I don’t think he’s available. >> What is his um >> like he just got to >> It was a trade though. >> Yeah, >> he has a he has an RFA after this year. You know, >> I just look at Trevor Ziggress and I see a guy who was supposed to be the next big thing and kind of just feels like he checked out on Anaheim. Um had some injury problems. So that’s, you know, you got to be fair in that regard. But he had a 65 point in 81 game 2022 23 season with Anaheim. Then 15 and 31 injuries, 32 and 57 injuries. This year he has 33 points in 32 games with Philly. My do I think Trevor Zagris would help this team? Yes. My concern about Trevor Ziggress is Anaheim who is young and ready to win was like we’re good. >> Yeah, >> that’s a big red flag for me. >> What was that move? >> I don’t remember the exact trade. There’s [snorts] no way to know. If only there was some sort of there was >> worldwide >> uh for Ryan Failing and a 2025 second round pick and a 2026 fourth round pick, >> but they’re trading for one year of him. >> Mhm. Right. >> So, >> and you’d have to if it’s an RFA and I believe he’s AR eligible. Let’s see. >> The thing with >> Yes, he’s arbitration. The thing with me with Ziggress is if people didn’t want or not didn’t want, if people weren’t convinced that Mitch Mner could help this team, why are you convinced that Trevor Zaggress is going to? Trevor Zaggress is is not even close to player that Mitch Mner is. >> Yeah. >> And if you’re ant if you’re anti-Mitch Mner, there’s no reason to even think about Trevor Z. >> Well, I think there are I don’t know how many anti-Mitch Mner people there were. Um, a lot. I just don’t I mean for the co I don’t know what it’s gonna cost to get Ziggris. You’ll have to trade something to Philly to get him. >> Um >> Trevor Ziggress isn’t helping this team. >> I don’t I don’t if Trevor Ziggress plays for the Hawks tonight. >> Maybe they lose 4-2. >> He’s not. >> I I just don’t I just to me that is a band-aid on a bullet. There are there are few individual players in this league out of the 800 or so that play in the NHL right now. There are few that are going to step in day one as one player and drag this team out of what what they’re in right now. And none of those players are available via trade or whatever. But just, you know, back to the um fire Kyle Davidson thing, >> I I understand the impatience. I’m not I’m not going to argue. It is very hard to be a fan and go through this game after game after game. And then this year, you feel like you’re getting a little bit of a glimpse and that window is starting to open. You’re like, “Oh boy, here we go.” And then it gets slammed on your fingers >> for myriad reasons, right? I get it. I get the frustration. And I could see if you were looking up and down the Blackhawks prospect system outside of the NHL or outside of Rockford and it was just but but if you look at what is actually happening all of them are succeeding and that’s all you can ask for. >> You can say and it’s correct that well all these prospects aren’t going to pan out. Of course they’re not. No, there’s no GM in the history of the game that’s batted a thousand on draft picks. None. Even if you do first round draft picks, but the fact that they’re thriving in their current roles is a good thing. Some of them too, like, wow, this is a really unexpected jump from this guy. I think you’d say that from Nester. You would say that about uh Adam Gian has made a big jump over the year, right? Merrick Vanacher who leading scoreer like it there’s there’s a lot to be positive about. It’s just a matter of and and you’ve got so many of them. So you don’t need all of them to work out. If the guys we rattle off show after show after show, if half of those guys become NHL players, the rebuild was a success. >> It was. And look, I I I do think it is time for Kyle Davidson to consider, and I said this this summer, like that’s why we were talking about Mitch Mner. It’s time to start considering bringing in help. The only issue is now it is harder than ever to do that. >> Yeah. >> Because guys just don’t become available. And the one guy that you can look at and say maybe, just maybe, is Jason Robertson, who still does not have a contract. He is an RFA after this year with Dallas. They’ve got a lot of big contracts, but the cap is skyrocketing. So, they’ll probably figure out a way to keep Jason Robertson because that’s what Jim Nil does. >> Mhm. So, I just don’t know where this I see a lot of complaints and fire this guy, but I don’t see a lot of solutions aside from the solutions being offered are fire the GM, our prospects won’t actually be good and other teams have better prospects, but that’s not a solution to what’s going on with the Blackhawks, >> right? So, I think that’s where sometimes it feels like we’re banging our head against the wall like, but what do you want? And if you fire Kyle Davidson, what does that accomplish? >> Uh, it starts everything over, >> right? >> Because let’s let’s entertain this. They f let’s we got a break zone coming up. So, I’ll just make this quick. They fire Kyle Davidson. They bring in a GM that’s going to go in a different direction. Every prospect and every draft pick that you’ve invested time in, invested development in, >> most of them get traded away for win now players. and the win now players you get uh don’t make it to the playoffs. Now what? Now you’ve depleted your prospect system and you don’t have a and you don’t have a future. So then you fire your GM again, you fire your coach again and we do this uh every few years go in this cycle uh and then the sun explodes, right? All right. They’ve been serving the community since 1963. Together, let’s drive. All right, we’re back on CHDL Blackhawks. Why don’t we give a listen to Blackhawks head coach Jeff Flashel who spoke with the media after the game and looking at some of the comments that he made, I think you’re going to like this. How do you assess that game? Um, >> I think the chances after two were 118 and they end up 1913. Uh, that’s kind of prelim for us. So, you know, after two, I thought we were in position to win a game on the road. I didn’t think it was our best game, but um, I thought we were in position to win a game on the road. We didn’t have good enough third. Um beyond that I would say um I thought you know one of the things we have to do is when is I just thought too many guys had like their C game and you know you’re not going to have your A+ game every night but you got to find a way to make sure you’re when you don’t have that you have a B+ game and and um not not necessarily even mentality how you play just the the the actual level of which you play at. So, um, you know, it’s that’s that’s part of the process of making sure we figure that out. >> You feel like there’s ways that we can pull more offense out of this group? >> Um, well, we passed up shots in scoring areas, you know, so that would be step one. Like, you can’t pass up a shot in a scoring area. We literally passed it out of a scoring area into a non-scoring area. Like, that it’s nonsensical. Um, we’re going to have to simplify that piece of it. We’re going to have to make sure that we have much more of a shooting mentality uh and create the chaos off the shots. >> Two successful challenges. Um what did you see on those and I guess um getting good info from the video guys? >> Yeah, I mean you know the video guys ultimately making those calls just it’s really hard on the bench to to see it the way that you need to. They got they got multiple views at it. Um you know they the offides is you know generally black and white except for those possession and control calls. So, um, you know, we felt we had the views that showed it was clearly off sides and so we challenged both. Do >> you ever seen a game like that where there were three successful challenges waving off goals? >> Uh, I don’t remember if three or not. I remember a playoff game in Tampa. I know Florida two got uh, you know, taken off and there were two went in their favor. I don’t remember if it was three. So, you know, it’s an odd game. Um, you know, and and listen, things happen fast out there and it’s, you know, like, you know, I think the both the offsides were actually close. I mean, they’re it’s clear it’s offside, but they were close. So, you know, that’s a tough one for the linesman. I >> I know it comes in a loss, but do you think it was important for Nazar just to get it seemed like it seemed like even after that he had some jumps, too? >> Yeah, cuz I think he’s been playing good enough to to deserve that, you know, and I you know, we just talked about today him and I like if you just keep keep it up, you’re going to get rewarded and and so I thought it was good for him to get rewarded and it’s unfortunate it wasn’t, you know, in a win, but um we’re going to need him down this down these next few games here to uh to get, you know, almost get hot and really feel it offensively and that’s a confidence thing. So, certainly scoring helps that. Sorry if you touched on Spencer, but uh pretty good night for him. Tough that he batted that one over the >> Yeah, that’s that’s a that’s that’s unfortunate, but I thought he played really well. I thought he gave us a chance to win. Um you know, again, I thought for the most part we defended pretty good for two periods. Um we contested a lot of their chances. Um but he he did a good job as well. >> What do you think of the green line? It seems like just the learning. >> Yeah, they struggled tonight to be dead honest with you. um you know they they it’s it’s you know it is a lot to ask of of three guys of that age with that inexperience uh to step in the NHL and try to get it done. you know, you don’t have anybody that kind of can help carry you around a little bit. And so, um, you know, they’ve had moments of good and tonight was, uh, not good enough, you know, and and so it’s a it’s a process for them. And and, you know, that’s part of what we’re doing here is putting these guys in in position in uh, spots where they got to they got to grow and um, you know, so we’ll see what we do. Might mix the lines up a little bit come uh, come Saturday, but we’ll see how that goes. >> Oh, hey, there you go. >> Might mix the lines up. >> Shoot the puck. Mixing up the lines. >> There you go. the the shoot the man [laughter] I’m going to lose my mind guys this is why I’m going to game day men’s health for the hair loss treatment >> yeah are we ready to name a winner of our game puck >> team yearoveryear decides that crispy passing plays is better than scoring goals >> I really love when they pass out of a scoring chance my favorite it’s my favorite Hawks thing >> can’t can’t pass up a shot in a scoring area we literally passed it out of a scoring area into a non non-scoring area. That’s nonsensical. >> That’s correct. >> That needs to be on a t-shirt. >> All right, Chloe, the game puck winner is >> Okay, right now. >> Well, call it, but >> is it too close to call? >> I don’t think so. >> If you’re in line to vote, stay in line. >> Yeah. [snorts] >> Um, Frank Nazar wins 54% at 46. >> That’s That’s enough. That’s a majority. [snorts] Will it shock you to know that that is Frank Nazar’s first game puck of the season? >> Yes, actually that is surprising. >> Yeah, it is. Frank Nazar’s first game puck. And our game pucks are always brought to you by GameDay Men’s Health. Better father, better husband, better man. Go to game day men’s health. Visit gamedaychgo.com to find locations closest to you. Uh we have another super chat we have to take care of. I don’t want any of these to fall through the cracks. James uh Iceman says, “Jay, don’t joke about trading. Arty Lev is a lynch pin. The future of the Hawks defense. I really believe that. Love the rest of our new Dmen, too. Yes, I was definitely joking about trading Art Leov. [laughter] I I have no intentions that the Hawks should trade art. >> Yeah, there’s no no reason to do that. >> Uh, no, not at all. Not at all. >> Yeah. I mean, >> with with I just want to I just want to say I feel like we haven’t >> given enough oxygen to Frank getting the literally getting the monkey off his back, ending his >> ending his uh his goal drought. That’s I mean that’s going to be a big thing like that’s and you know he he downplayed it uh apparently in in the post game, but it’s it’s a big it’s a big deal. like they need him to have that confidence again and you know even even though they lose tonight like him scoring that goal and then how that opened up his game from then on like you know we’ve seen that happen with Bard uh you know in the previous two seasons this year especially too if he gets if he gets his motor going early with getting a point or getting a goal like that affects the rest of his game and that happened tonight with Frank so that’s a good thing to see from him >> well after that puck went in. He looked like a different dude. And I heard, did you hear Darren Pang say something about him wearing new skates or something? >> Yeah, >> cuz he mentioned in the 32 Thoughts interview how much he hates changing skates >> and and Panganger said something around along the lines of uh >> the trainers have been trying to get him to put those new skates on and he finally did and he looks faster. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. I mean, a lot of these a lot of these guys can can, you know, be creatures of habit with their with their gear and everything. Some guys like new skates every other game. Uh, some guys will wear gear down to the bones and sounds like Frank is a guy that likes to break in skates and use them until, you know, he’s literally breaking the skates. Um, but you know, you’re you’re you’re in the NHL, Frank. You can you can get new skates. >> Um, we asked for solutions and we got a couple of them. uh forget who suggested it but one of which one of them was Philip Forsber and I thought you had a very interesting as we discussed that uh during the break you had a very interesting thought. Yeah, I mean the the reason that you suggest going and getting Philip Forsber from the National Predators is because the National Predators went out and got legitimate top six guys in Steven Stamos and and Jonathan Marsha show and got a legitimate top four guy to help their team in Brady Shay and oh they’re selling all those guys, right? So I don’t think that’s the route you want to go. I don’t know. I I again and that’s and that’s a Nashville team that’s uh below the Hawks in the standings right now for now. Um and doesn’t I don’t know what their future is. It’s not the guys on their team now. It’s not it’s their future is not Ryan O’Reilly, Steven Stamco, Jonathan Marshow. You got Brady Martin. He’s a I mean he’s a good player, but your prospect system doesn’t really have any game breakers in it >> that I that that I would consider. So, >> and that’s why they’re moving them cuz it’s t it’s overdue. >> And you traded your ass ascarov. So, Barry Trotz, hats off to you as a coach. You’re a terrible GM. >> The refrigerator shaped man. Mini fridge. He looks better these days. Mini fridge. Mini fridge. Um, yeah. Look, we know it’s frustrating, guys. I know. Uh, Robert Thomas, another name in the chat. I don’t know how anxious the Blues are to trade >> their best player, >> their best player to their biggest rival. I don’t know how willing the Hawks are to give a good prospect to the St. Louis Blues. Um, but a guy like Robert Thomas, sure, I’d be down with that. But again, what’s it going to take to get them? >> Yeah, Robert Thomas for free sounds great. >> Yeah, I just it’s Yeah. >> What are you going to have to trade to give up a player? [snorts] >> And again, I like I was mentioning before, there’s not really too many players that are day one that they get here instantly making this team uh that drastically better. Robert Thomas, I wouldn’t put in that category. He’s a great player. I would love to have Robert Thomas, but >> he’s not >> He would certainly solve problems for the Blackhawks today. >> He’d give you He’d give you another option, >> but I’m not giving up but he’s not multiple first. >> He’s not the guy that pulls you single-handedly out of this without Bard. And yeah, it just I don’t just don’t see it happening. >> Yeah, I’m just I’m begging you to be patient. And someone in the chat said, you know, the Hawks only have three guys that could legitimately play in the top six. uh Nazar and Moore and Bedard. Well, there’s half your top six. I think the thought would be that Caner or that Fondell is certainly a top six. So, there’s four of your six. Are there two more forwards the Hawks can either acquire or develop or draft that could play in a top six? I mean, Nick Artist did score 71 goals. >> Yeah. >> Last year. Like, >> plays like a top six talent. >> Three games in the NHL. like he’s going to he’s going to have to grow and figure out his game. >> And then you take your if it is Oliver Moore or Ryan Green, you take them from the current spots on the top line, second line, move them down to the third or fourth lines and then you’re looking at a team that has depth and is very young. And that’s what we’re talking about. >> If Oliver Moore is not a top six, he’s a third line guy with scoring upside and a bunch of speed and a bunch of jam, right? >> You had a lot of those guys when you were winning Stanley Cups. That’s it. >> I like um the idea of getting Nathan McKinnon. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> You think uh Ethan Delmastro, the Florida’s first and [snorts] >> a 2027 fourth round pick >> conditional? >> Yeah. >> Conditional. >> I could Bowie is an AS fan. Are you taking that? >> No. The only reason I would ever take that is because then I could watch him play here. >> See, that’s a good reason to take it. Yeah. >> There you go. Done. All right. We solved it. Nathan McKinnon did to the Blackhawks confirmed. >> We did it. >> Eklland E5. Remember that. Is that still a thing? >> I I can’t I can’t say it is. >> No. The good old days. >> Good old days. Is that hockey insider guy with like three Rs? Legit. You ever seen him? His his avatar is like a head with a question mark. >> Is that smart insider man? >> No, it’s that’s a different one. >> Okay. Cuz that’s a parody account for sure. Um or is it? No. Uh, >> he was saying that Sam Co is is going to the Flyers >> cuz that makes a ton of sense. >> Well, >> I don’t know. >> We’ll see. >> All right, we made it. The show is over. >> Pip, I’m going to be as sad as I want to be. >> Yeah. Do we want to hear Frank? >> It’s a minute. >> Let’s Let’s let Frank close the show. >> We might go to overtime. If we go to overtime, switch over to lcto.com. Here’s Frank Nar courtesy of the Blackhawks. >> Second. Um, I think, you know, we were right there with them throughout the first and second. I just got to really do a better job of, you know, sticking to to our game and not letting him take over the third. >> Did Did it feel like the game, I guess, just there was something that made I guess a tie turn or something? You guys felt like you guys just punched back? I >> think a quick goal by them start obviously, but I thought we had some some good punch back there towards the end of the third. You know, we had a few good shifts that we um piled up. you know, we we kind of put them on their heels for a second and then um you know, they they come back and they build momentum, but I mean, that’s how the game goes. Just trying to figure out how to suppress that and really just continue to play a strong full game. >> How did it feel for you to finally get one? >> I mean, we lost, so it sucked. >> Anything else? How tough was this one? all those goals that were refused momentum for the game for you guys especially. >> Um I know that’s a good question. Try not to think about it too much. Just go out there and um be better, right? Cuz I mean if we’re letting up a goal and we got to we got to rely on um the officials to go back and look at it. The coach’s challenge, you know, we’re doing something wrong. So >> together. >> I’ve never seen a sad Frank Nazar and I don’t like it. >> That’s a sad Frank. You should have warned us about that, Chloe. >> Well, we’re done anyway. We’re wrapping the show. >> We’re in overtime. And overtime. >> And we lost. >> Oh, man. >> Yeah, there’s been Hawks games like that. >> Got to hear the LA song again. >> Yeah. >> All right. Guess what? We are back Saturday. We’re off tomorrow. We do have a mini pod uh dropping tomorrow. >> We are your Bears pregame for Saturday. [laughter] >> Bears pregame. Exactly. Uh, Hawks play a two. So 130 pregame, probably what, 2:45ish postgame, and that will get you right up to the start. >> 45 minute game. >> Oh, I’m sorry. 4:45. [laughter] Yeah, 440. About 4:45. >> Sign me up. >> And then we’ll be if done at uh 5:45. Get in the car at 6:30. Home by Yeah. home for kickoff. Let’s go. >> Yep. I think we’ll we’ll be able to make it. >> You know what? And if the Bears beat the Packers this weekend, I will sacrifice one more Hawks loss. >> Just one. >> Just one. >> Okay. Yes. >> Just one. >> Yes. >> I thought you were going to say that you would sacrifice yourself >> for >> I mean, I got to go sometime. >> You know, >> I think I’ve served my purpose on this earth. >> That’s what Jay said the other day. He said, “I’m hoping for a few more years.” >> We were like, “A few more?” Not like 20, 30. >> I just want to see my daughter go to college and I’m good. >> So, you got three more. >> Three more. >> Yeah. That’s why the Hawks need to accelerate this rebuild. >> Yeah, for me. [laughter] I only got a few days left. Come on, Hawks. Come on, Davidsman. >> All right, we will talk to you uh what day is it again? Saturday 1:30 pregame. I’ll be here. Mario will be here. Khloe will be here, but she’ll have her mind in Colorado right before her trip. >> You’re not here Saturday. >> So, what are you saying no to? >> I’m saying my mind will be here. >> No, it won’t. >> Her mind is here while she’s wearing her Colorado shirt. >> What? Yeah, this is a for over time. >> No, this is a CU buff shirt. >> But you worked in >> That’s a for Gorilla Sports. >> Yes. >> Yet your entire wardrobe is DNVR. How does that work? >> Because I went to DMV right before I came here. And >> I gave you a bunch of stuff. >> Well, I don’t know. >> No. Well, when we went to DMV, we got we [laughter] did get some stuff. We got to get some stuff. Yeah. >> Do you have any Hawk stuff? >> No. >> Well, you will when my hawks hat arrives and looks weird on me. >> Well, I hope so. I hope it does look weird on you. >> All right. 1. Even with Bedard out. The team is pathetic. The veterans should be traded. This was supposed to be the year where we get the young players playing in the NHL. Veterans like Burakovsky,Murphy,Toninato,Grzelcyk. Should not be playing for the Hawks. We have a bunch of young players who are promising yet they haven’t been called up. These players in Rockford could give us offense. I’m glad that Nazar got out of the slump but we need more players up here to help. Especially with no Bedard until the end of the month. It’s getting ridiculous with the same dame shit with 0 effort. Last year was unacceptable. It’s the same crapshoot this season. The only difference is that Bedard is playing a lot better enough where he could put himself on the Olympic roster. This team is a joke and if this continues into the second half where we are having games like this, Davidsons job should be in jeopardy. I can handle losses this season but I won’t accept losses where we are getting our ass kicked and there’s no pushback. This team looks scared. That’s not a recipe for success in the NHL.

  2. Fellas. Let me start by saying I truly enjoy your program. I’m from Harrisburg, PA, and the only Philly sports team I don’t root for is the Fry Guys (I jumped ship in 1991 when Eddie Belfour became their netminder — in fact I have a 17 year old ball Python named Belfour).

As a Penn State fan, I’ve watched these youngsters play (Nazar, Ollie, Arty, Rinzel, Slags) play and play well against my Lions.

I understand the “process” under Blash, but I’m of the opinion that coach should just let these guys play best of their ability.

PS — can either of you explain why Knight was pulled with 4 minutes left in a 3-1 game? This wasn’t a Cup playoff game and Spencer was rocking it!

  3. Montreal played well…they were high energy almost the whole game. They forechecked like it was a playoff game. They stuck to their structure almost perfectly. They were always in the right place – in the o-zone and d-zone. That's why the Hawks only got 15 on net…

  4. BedZ is the true MVP of the NHL and this absence proves it. BedZ was angle handily dragging the Hawks into playoff contention. Next year is the year to evaluate the Hawks not this year. Patience grasshoppers.

  5. At this point it's pretty much delusional to think that our prospects pool (Davidson draft picks) are going to push us into becoming a playoff Team.. Look at the San Jose Shark : They started their rebuilt 1 year after the Hawks and in 4 years built a team that went from last freaking place last year to 19th so a jump of 12-13 positions and look way better. The Hawks have been drafting high draft picks since season 2020-2021 – have been a bottom tier NHL Team for the last 5 consecutive seasons and Top 4 worst Team for the past 3 years meaning Davidson has had the second most high draft picks of all NHL Teams. With all this AND excellent goaltending from Knight we have moved 3 ranks to 28th and in a downward spiral. I think that your take "The boys are alright" is too complacent. You believe Levshunuv is great compared to what you saw from Demidov who would be 3rd PTS scorer with the Hawks as a 20 years old rookie when the Hawks said the priority was to surround Bedard with the best talent for his development ? Kantserov – Frondell etc.. are franchise movers ? That's what we thought with the current prospects pool. Very deflating situation our Franchise is in.. Davidson should have 1 more draft (the up coming one) to produce results and start acting like a competent GM by making a significant trade to shake things up or be removed.

  6. Things were going bad even when Bedard was on the team. Lack of depth scoring is concerning and it is more evident with Bedard out of the lineup. I think yhe Hawks are playing how most people expected, the beginning of the season was an anomaly

  7. Well look at the Montreal Canadiens when they fired Bergevin and brought key top NHL management talent in Hughes and Jeff Gorton.. in 3 years it accelerated the Canadiens development into this Top 12 Team with very wise drafting – trades and probably the best long term cap friendly Team contracts in the NHL for long term success with their core.. so yes having the best GM and front management absolutely matters !!

  8. We should all remember that the team we are building will only keep 4 or 5 of the current forwards. The D is inexperienced still. I love my Hawks. I do not want to be a fan with a "loser mantality". Just like the players, can't get too low or too high. Be patient people.

  9. Bedard being out really exposes this team. Davidson needs to make a move! If we end up bottom 3 again davidsons job will be relying on the success of the 2026-2027 season

  10. Unfortunately, this team isn't worth my time.
They cant score, they cant hit, they wont fight.
I'm not watching anymore of this shit show until they act like professional hockey players earning millions.
