Over 90% of civil cases settle. Skaggs family wanted a lot, the Angels wanted to pay a little.
The judge and jury set the parameters. They Angels could have appealed a decision for years, a settlement can be paid out in months.
The family at least gets some compensation, and the Angels get out with limited to no liability.
The hope for us is that this case was making it hard for Arte to sell the team.
I just want him to sell the team so bad
They could have saved a lot more money if they had settled early. Litigation gets more expensive the longer it goes.
I find it gross the way people have talked about this case solely as an instrument to force Arte to sell. Trust me, I want Arte gone as much as the next person, and I’ve wanted it for a good deal longer than most. But the point of this case is not and was never “Arte can’t field a winning baseball team so let’s get him out of there”
nothing but tragedy in this case, and a tragedy that is only of limited relevance to the team’s struggles to win. The way some of you talk you’d have completely flipped sides if Arte was a great owner who spent a ton on winning clubs every year, even if none of the other underlying facts changed. Have some decency.
Arte can sell now. This case had to be the reason he withdrew the team from the market, regardless of the outcome.
I have previously posted about the angels not having a general counsel to assist them in legal matters while all other teams have full legal teams. This settlement shows the angels need their own general counsel to advise on legal matters like this litigation. Settling this matter years ago would have protected the organization from a lot of embarrassment and put it behind them. Instead, the team likely spent hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions to try this case. On top of that, a lot of embarrassing stories came out about the organization where it became clear the front office was allowing a drug addict to have affairs with interns and run rampant and their start players were engaging in harrassment and hazing. The only reason the team settled is because they knew they were going to lose or else it would have made no sense to settle after the all embarrassment and money spent on this trial. What a terribly run organization….
So that means this is all over?
It was always about the money. I hate arte but drug addicts make their own choices. Hopefully this can be the end. I’m tired of hearing about it

It’s insane to me that companies can be forced to pay millions for their own family choosing to do drugs knowing the associated risks.
