Angels, Skaggs family reach last-minute settlement in the 3-month trial from the death of Tyler Skaggs

  1. Could’ve just settled this beforehand to save everyone the grief and most likely a huge amount of money.

Sell the team you fucking moron.

  2. We got all the testimony. Skaggs family surely gets some money in this settlement. And there is no risk the Angels are “exonerated”.

I hate it, because I hate Arte Moreno, but I get settling if they were anything less than 100% certain of victory.

  3. “On Wednesday, the jury asked questions about the testimony of the five wage experts and about whether the jury would also be allowed to award punitive damages. Throughout the trial, the jury heard baseball wage experts testify that Skaggs’ lost career wages ranged from $21 million to nearly $125 million.”

    Angels were probably fucked.

  4. Kinda feels like the least the Angels could do is pay the family off after their fall guy is already spending his life in prison

  5. This entire trial describes in perfect form why I hate Arte and his goons. Go for a trial instead of trying to reach for a settlement and not only is the opposing side making you look like complete shit during the trial, you even make a bigger POS out of yourselves with your witnesses. And after realizing the jury will f**k you up big time you agree to a last minute settlement that cost a lot more than a pre-trial settlement.

  6. I hate that the Skaggs family has been dragged through this trial, but I am glad that they were able to settle. You know it must have killed Arte to do it.

  7. Will I get downvoted for saying Skaggs is not an innocent victim and he’s a grown man who made his own bed in this situation.

  8. Great job airing out all the dirty laundry just to settle anyways Farte. Sell the team you doofus. Hope the family took him to the cleaners on this one

  9. Did the Angels introduce Skaggs to opiates, or did he become a junkie on his own, as a grown man who made his own decisions?

  10. Perfect victims don’t exist and everyone deserves some sort of justice. The only difference here is his family had the privilege and power to go after it unlike many others who have passed from substance abuse

  11. Not only is Arte Moreno a terrible MLB owner, he’s also a terrible person. I hope he never has success with the Angels as long as he owns them.

  12. Bad business all around. I’m not sure a bag of cash can truly be called “closure”, but it never hurts. Feel for the family in any case.

If Moreno had any decency to speak of he’d have settled this before it ever went to trial. Fuck me, baseball has some truly repugnant owners. Sell the damn team, Arte.

  13. Not to speak ill of the dead, but there was no way he was gonna make $125 million. He was an average mid rotation guy.

  14. We’ll probably never know what they settled for. Anyone with expertise on situations like this, might have a guess? They originally asked for $250,000,000 which is ludicrous.

Skaggs might’ve made another $20-50M in his career and that might be generous. And I’m not sure the family even deserves all of those lost earnings from the Angels, because Skaggs himself has cuplability here for being a drug addict who took drugs and alcohol himself that led to his death.

  15. Though it really must suck for the jurors, I’m glad its over. Everything about this trial has been gross. Whether it was the organization looking even more negligent and incompetent than previously thought, the Angels central argument of “Actually he wasn’t a good player and we were lying when he said he was good”, the fanbase’ sole worry being whether Arte will sell the team after this, the sympathies from everyone right after his death looking increasingly hollow during the course of this trial, to even the discussions in this thread.

Angels are my #1 team, but I’m not sure I have the stomach to follow them for the foreseeable future.

  16. It’s too bad. The Angels could have used the money to sign some completely cooked player to a big money contract.

  17. I don’t care about the Angels billionaire owner losing money but Skaggs was an adult who made his own bad decisions and was responsible for his own death. It is ridiculous that his family gets to cash in on his death like he was some victim.
