Injuries Piling Up Ahead of Bills-Browns w/ Sal Capaccio | The Jeremy and Joe Show

Sal Kapacio joins us on the Western Hotline. The Sabres win, the Bills play the Browns. An epic Thursday night game and we’re talking about it with you. Get the injury report as well. It’s all part of a uh football Friday brought to you by uh Celeno Law. Car crash. Call Selenino. Call the eight. Somebody Crosby’s Pizza and Subs. Crosby’s hometown fuel game day ready since 1922. S, good morning. >> Good morning. How are you? >> I’m all right. I stayed up for that whole game last night. If you if you went to bed when the Rams were up 14 in the fourth quarter, I wouldn’t blame you. The game looked very safe. And uh Seattle came all the way back and it was a crazy game of the year kind of game that uh you know, we’ve seen the Bills play games like this s right like whether it’s Bills Rams or Bills Vikings like Rams Seahawks last night’s up for game of the year. >> I agree. And yeah, it was what 30 to 14 with like maybe midway through the >> fourth quarter, >> right? And and >> I just mentioned I thought I thought I thought McVey should have gone for two. Like get it to 17 if you can. Like let’s kill this game on the road in that spot, you know, but he didn’t. He went for 16 and ultimately they didn’t they did not hold on. >> Well, you still have to, you know, you get to 16. It’s a good argument. You get to 16, you still force the other team to get two two-point conversions. And Jeremy, they didn’t get the second one, right? So, I mean, by by getting to 16 at a time, it worked out okay because they were still down because they didn’t get the second two-point conversion. That’s right. I get the argument, though. I think there’s a there’s a lot of really good debates about the math of all these touchdowns lately and all these, you know, you go when you’re down 15 if you should go for two initially or weight. And we’ve had that debate, the Eagles Bears game a few weeks ago. I I look at it as too though that this is how important one big special teams play can be. It’s how important one big play can be. We’ve seen Bills games lately turn on these kinds of plays. You go all the way back to the Baltimore game early in the season, the fumble, right, that really kind of shifted everything like, oh my god, they actually have a chance here once they got that fumble. Um, you go back to the Bengals game, the Christian Benford interception and return. You go to the Steelers game, the Christian Benford scoop and score. One play that that’s all it takes, one play to change these games and really kind of change momentum. I wouldn’t say last week was more about one play, but I will point to a play and it was special teams. It was the opening kickoff of the second half with Ray Davis. Josh Allen said once they got that, you know, kickoff into New England territory, they kind of settled down and thought they didn’t have to rush. They could just go down and score and it’s a new game. So, I thought that was pretty interesting. And then as the game unfolded, boy, it was um it was pretty wild actually to to watch. And, you know, give credit to Seattle. They knew, too. They they went for it and they went for two. They weren’t going to tie. It was either we’re winning this game or we’re losing this game now. >> Yeah. A tie would have been bad for them. A tie would have meant the Rams stayed in control. Like I wonder if this is week three what they do, but you know this late you kind of know your scenarios. It’s a two-point conversion to take control and have a chance to get the one seed. And credit to them. I mean Darnold makes a nice play. It’s so funny too, S like he looked totally out of it for most of that game and struggling yet again. I think the numbers against the Rams were five interceptions and no touchdowns until this comeback ultimately starts. And one Bills fan tweeted into me and made a good point here. Like if you’re if you’re thinking Super Bowl, we do a lot where we talk about how the AFC looks wide open. You know, the AFC and then on the other side, they look like there’s a bunch of good teams. What last night maybe did, it depends what you think of these teams, but last night made the Rams road potentially a lot tougher. And I I still think the Rams are the best team in the NFC. And now they might have to go on the road for three games. Like it. So, you know, if you’re thinking Super Bowl for the Bills and you’re thinking about opponents that far down the line, I don’t think it’s nuts to think about that. >> I think it’s really interesting you brought this up because this goes back to my receding question I asked the other day on social media. And I think a lot of people looked at it through a Bills prism because I tweeted out it and I cover the Bills. It wasn’t. It was just because I was looking at the standings. cuz I was looking at the Bills, but because I was thinking about what if the Lions proposal had changed last year. And the Lions proposal last year was if you win your division, you still get in, but everybody’s ranked according to record, not the top four teams automatically get the first four seeds. Top four division, the four division winners automatically get in. So, of course, we know the Bills, they could finish with, you know, 13 wins, let’s say, and have to go on the road to a nine or 10 win division winner. That could happen, right? Pittsburgh. But how about the Rams? Okay, same thing. The Rams right now, Jeremy, an 11 win Rams team would go to a seven win Bucks team. Yeah. >> And maybe everybody’s okay with that. That’s cool. I’m not I’m not I don’t know. I have my reservations about it as well. I’m not saying it should be. But your point is right, which is does anybody tell us that the Rams are the fifth best team in the NFC? And if the argument is, we’ll just win your division. Well, that’s easier said than done when maybe the top two teams, including yourself, are in the same division, right? They would be the number two seed in any other division in the NFC. But you’re right, that makes it now. They may have to go to Tampa. And if they take care of the business there, they would have to go to maybe Philly or Seattle again or Chicago, right? And who knows? But it does make it a lot tougher for these better teams, if you will. >> It is actually even s before we get to the Bills here. So last year it was two teams. It was the Lions and the Vikings making this point like others. Two teams playing for either the one or the five. this team this year, that’s three teams that are doing that because it’s all teams in the NF in the NFC West where the Rams go from the one to the five and and this also happened to the to the the Packers also and the Bears. The Bears were the one seed one week and then drop to the seven seed the next week. So like >> whatever. Like it’s it’s interesting the idea. How would you like the compromise of receding after the first round where okay, you’re a wildcard team that won on the road and if you have a better record than the division winner that made it through, you do get to host a home game that way. I think I saw I don’t know who tweeted this, but that to me looks like a compromise where all right, you win your division, you get your home game, but in the second round you only get a home game if you actually have the tiebreaker. if you if you are a better team. To me, that does sound like a very reasonable thing and might even add a little incentive. Like if we’re talking about the Bills in this scenario, hey, keep winning because if you win your first game, you have a really good look at hosting in the in the second round. >> Yeah, a few people did, but give credit Jay Skursky. The Buffalo News actually um who tweet about it. Thank you. That’s who it was. Jay Kursky. >> Yeah. And Jay said, “A fair compromise would be seat after the wild card round. I’m fine with the reward of winning your division being a home playoff game, but it feels like the division around and title games should be based on record alone. And and that’s interesting, too. And you know, I know it’s an unbalanced schedule. It’s uneven. It’s a great debate anyway. It’s a great debate. And I know it’s just you bringing that up last night. It’s just I think you could make an argument. I don’t know if Seattle always is like I still have questions about Seattle. I don’t have as many questions about the Rams. I think the Rams are just they’re they’re probably the best team in the NFC. They don’t have to play like it every week. And I think Matt Stafford is very deserving of MVP right now. And I know Josh has an outside shot and we’re close to it. But Stafford’s had an amazing year. There’s no doubt about that. I I think though if if Seattle’s in a tussle in a game, I don’t trust their quarterback as much as I definitely would trust Matt Stafford, >> right? Yep. I get that. Their defense also Seattle’s got a bunch of injuries. They lost Nick Mory last night for a little while as well. I think their coach is a heck of a coach. I think I think they’ve got a good hire with that guy and uh it’s going well early on. All right, S to the Bills injury report. Let’s get to that because it’s been growing and I don’t know if we’re like at a at a stage where we can joke about it. It are more players getting hurt at practice than in games because it seems like during the week we’ve we’ve had a couple high-profile practice injuries from Ed Oliver to Christian Benford and then yesterday is a day where we find a few players kind of going in the wrong direction at practice from full to limited or or popping up on the injury report. So, um let’s run through it. You you start where you want on this injury report, but it but it did grow. >> It did. Um, and I guess we don’t know the answer to your question because Wednesdays are walkthroughs and they are estimations on if they were full practices. So, what happens is Shawn McDermott and the team, McDermott tells us right before Wednesday, this is what to expect. Here’s the injury report. And then once they actually have the walkth through and they say, you know what, if it was a real practice, maybe this guy wouldn’t have been what we thought because he’s dealing with this. And that can happen, right? So people wonder why something might change from when McDermott talks to us by the time they go out there. Well, because it’s a walkthrough, they’re estimating and maybe they maybe he maybe they estimated a bit wrong because he got with the trainers and you know, it’s like, okay, well that guy’s got something a little more bothering him or something like that, which is understandable, but it does happen and I get the questions about it. Then the second thing that happens is you get to Thursday, you have a full practice. So now, is that player actually hurt? Did he injure himself during the week or is it something that they were managing and they just didn’t really feel comfortable putting him on the field or having him have a full practice? That could very well be the case. So that’s Daltton Concaid, right? That’s the question with Concaid. Okay. >> Whenever I see people say I can’t believe Concade got hurt again. Like I I don’t think Daltton Concade is reinjuring his knee. I think it’s something that he’s he’s been on the injury report every week with the knee. It’s the knee and the hamstring. It’s been right. It feels like it’s something they’re just managing and maybe they’re just not quite to a point yet where they’re comfortable every day putting them on. and maybe there was some swelling, maybe there was some flaring up. There’s no doubt that could very well happen. I’m not saying it wouldn’t because if McDermott doesn’t mention him, then he shows up. That tells me maybe there’s more to it. Um, but they want to manage him. It’s late in the year. No doubt about that. So, he was one of them. He was one that wasn’t listed on Wednesday and then by McDermott and then we went out there and he was listed. The other one was Dion Dawkins with an illness. Now, Dion has missed two days in a row with an illness. Luckily, it’s earlier in the week, but hopefully he’s okay. I mean, they are playing Miles Garrett this week. They’re playing a very good defense, but hopefully Dion personally is okay. And obviously the Bills would love him on the field. Now, let’s get to the guys that uh showed up as a downgrade from and and new also on Thursday. Cam Lewis has a hamstring limited on Thursday after nothing on Wednesday. That’s concerning to me. That means maybe something did happen at practice where something happened with his hamstring. Is it something major? Is it something that they just pushed him out because hey, we didn’t want anything to happen. And then you have Mitch Wishnowski in the same category with his right knee. By the way, when you see knee or elbow or toe, most guys it’s just listed like that. If it’s a punter or it’s a kicker or it’s a quarterback, they must list left or right because that obviously is how they throw or they kick. Yes, it’s it’s it’s in the NFL rules. You just have to do it. So, right now, the Bills have Mitch Wishnowski now listed as limited with a right knee injury. Did something happen to him at practice? If so, Jeremy, they’re going to be down their kicker and their punter and their holder. You think about that for a second, right? Like that’s a that’s a major shift. And how did the Green Bay Packers lose to the Cleveland Browns? How did Cleveland go to Green Bay and win? Go back and watch that game. Major special teams plays. That’s how Cleveland beat Green Bay earlier this year. Like special teams on a colder bit windier day it’s going to be in Cleveland, I believe. Um that’s going to be something to watch out for. So yes, we’re going to be monitoring that this week. And then um you do have some really good news on Terrell Bernard getting to be a full participant. And I know folks, Shaq Thompson’s played better. It is much better to have a healthy and available Terrell Bernard because it gives you more options. And Shaq Thompson didn’t have his best game last week. if you have more options and you can, you know, figure out how you want to play this, that’s better than not having him available. Very good news that Christian Benford was on the practice field two days in a row in a limited capacity. And then Nicole Hardman, I mean, at this point, I’d expect him maybe maybe to be activated by Saturday at 4 p.m. because two days in a row now, he’s practiced. He was a full participant. He is still on IR. Uh, but the team could wind up um activating him. And then finally, we have two more here. Taran Johnson was a estimated full participant but was limited on Thursday. Daquin Jones estimated full but limited. What I’m encouraged about is they were both on the injury report what these things are dealing with. What obviously is concerning is it was thought to be they’d be full but then they go to limited. Did something happen? We’ll find out from Shawn McDermott today at about 11:15. >> All right. That’s coming up as part of the Northtown Automotive Extra point show uh with S later today. 11:15 for Shawn McDermad. you know, s this this Browns team and this this matchup. I’m we kind of started to ask the question about load management and how they’ll do that and maybe less so in games with snap counts is the way that we monitor that and maybe more like who plays or who they they take an extra week on like I I feel like King Kade is is top of the list here or maybe like Joey Bosa came back. He must have been very ready. To me, they’re going to be cautious down the stretch here with any player of significance that’s got any sort of nagging injury. >> I agree 100%. And let’s remember, I think that, you know, the team is well aware where they are in the standings. If they do not get a buy in round one, which the only way they do that is to catch not only New England, but get the one seed, right? So, it looks pretty unlikely. They have to start thinking about that. They have to play straight through now. So, they have they would have six straight games, six straight weeks of games with no break here, and they had their by-week already way back in week six. You think about that’s a lot of football every single week grinding. So I think they have to keep the big picture in mind here. You’re not if you could get to the one see that’s the that’s the rub here where it’s still in the window. So you push hard to get it but at the same time you could push as hard as you want and if you don’t get it then all of a sudden now you’ve pushed those guys hard to get it and now you got to play every single week. So, I do think it’s a tough needle to thread a little bit here, Jeremy, but I agree with you like they have to kind of They’ve played the long game all year anyway, especially when it comes to soft tissue injuries. When you’re talking about a hamstring or something like that, we’ve seen guys just not come back, you know, as quickly as we thought. Even when they were limited during practice um during the week and you thought they might play, they didn’t wind up playing. So, I think Concade is at the top of that list. I think Joey Bosa’s got to be there. There’s no doubt about it. But, he keeps playing every week at a high percentage of snaps. So, it’s really interesting right there. Um, I think they’ve kind of treated Terrell Bernard like that and partly because and maybe a lot because of what Shaq Thompson’s done. I think they want to have Tro Bernard active. They want to have Tro Bernard on the field in some capacity. I’m not saying he’s playing every single down and the way that Shaq’s playing, maybe you could mix and match a little bit, but you know, they’ve I think played a little bit of the longer game with him because remember he had the ankle injury earlier, then he had the elbow and now he and he has actually practiced for a couple weeks here, but he just hasn’t been on the field. So, I do think it’s something that they’re keeping in mind. S Kapacho joining us on the Western Hotline ahead of Bill’s Browns 1:00 Sunday from Cleveland. The weather report s is we looking at blustery. What are we what are we looking at early on? >> Well, we’ll have Pat Hammer on at 11:30 today, but I’ll tell you, I give you a sneak peek. I did text Hammer the other day and I said, “All right.” >> Uh it just so happens that it’s going to be a nice weekend in Cleveland except for Sunday apparently, right? Because that’s the way it always goes. >> And he said he said to me at initially, this is a couple days ago, he said, “Yeah, breezy, not too bad. maybe like 20 mph winds. I don’t know. I’m seeing some places where it could be higher. So, we’ll see if that’s going to be the case. He’ll tell us today. He’ll have more of information today. Um I think it’s going to to me, you know what it feels like, Jeremy? Feels like Pittsburgh, but maybe a little bit cooler colder. Uh because Pittsburgh was pretty windy. It wasn’t like super duper windy, but it was pretty breezy. It was colder. Um it feels like that kind of weather day in Cleveland. And look, I mean, I know the Bills play in those kind of weather. They play in snowy conditions, whatever. Um, I think when you have a rookie quarterback and, you know, you can even limit the passing game a little bit more for a team like that, I think it could play in the Bills favor, especially you have Josh Allen who we know can throw in the wind. Um, and the Bills have a really excellent running game. So, I do think that’s the case. You know me, I mean, I’d love to get out there and not have the wind and all that. I love to have just kind of clean conditions for football. Um, but I do think that if it is windy like that that, you know, you you got a rookie quarterback already, you know, doing what you can to try and limit their passing attack and kind of reduce him down and say, “All right, well, you’re not going to get anything on us.” Well, if the weather becomes a factor for him, that makes it even tougher. That’s Shidor Sanders, obviously. >> Yeah. Shidor Sanders getting the start, the Browns, uh, their offense has not been that good. Their defense, of course, is Miles Garrett will be someone to watch. They’ve got a a decent defense that usually kind of just breaks down over time. But Garrett chasing the record, s there’s like there’s one thing about this game that is at least interesting. Like the Bills don’t want to get posterized. They don’t want to be the the uh the highlight for the the record-breaking sack because whatever number he finishes with, the next one will be the one that is like shown the most like the year he set the all-time sack record, he he did it with this sack, right? Like I’m thinking about when Maguire hits 60 or hits 70, it’s number 62 that’s like the biggest one. It’s the record breaker. It’s not the last one. And that might be true of Barry Bonds, too. Not Not that like the sack record is the home run record, but the next one is the biggest one for for Miles Garrett. No doubt. >> Yeah. Well, next one and a half, remember? He needs one and a half. >> True. True. That’s right. That half sack is really going to hit. You know what? All the Browns, all fellow defensive linemen, you want to make sure you make history. You get in on that half sack. That’s key for them. >> Yeah, that’s right. live forever. I like >> Yeah. And right now, so >> right now, Miles Garrett has >> uh 212. >> 21 and A2. 21 and A2. >> And the record is 22 and a half. So, yes, one sack would tie it. A sack and a half would break it. So, you’re right. And like you don’t want I think from a football standpoint, you don’t want him to break the sack and a half a sack, right? Break the record on a half a sack. You want him to have a full one. So, I’m okay with him getting a half a sack this week. Then, let him get one full sack next week against Aaron Rogers when they play him. So that would be that would be just fine with me to be quite honest. >> Thanks S. See you in a little bit. >> All right. See you. >> Sal Kapacho. He’s got the Northtown Automotive Extra Point Show. 1. Well, I think the bills need to start doing something different and fucking practicing. This is absolutely ridiculous with all these practice injuries. I don’t know what to say about this team this year the effing mash unit.

  2. I am ready for this season to be over however, the hell it ends this team is very good at pulling you back in and then breaking your heart. I just don’t get it with this team. Hopefully, we go to the Super Bowl but I’m not holding my

  3. I realize all teams deal with injuries, but this team is an anomaly at this point. Injuries in every practice these days????? At this point, just wrap the "usual guys" in bubble wrap until Sunday.

  4. I've said for years that the teams with the 7 best records should make the playoffs. These teams who win a crappy division with a .500 record always get eliminated immediately anyways, while good teams miss the playoffs.

  5. Sal – you’ve now said this twice in two different interviews. The game against the Packers and the Browns earlier in the year was in Cleveland, not Green Bay.

  6. These soft tissue injuries are absurd. What is going on with conditioning or lack there of ? And I’m not thinking Super Bowl for this team with these f-ing injuries. WTH

  7. Nobody thinks its stupid youd never see a AFC vs AFC or NFC vs NFC Superbowl? Like we will NEVER see a KC Vs Buffalo Superbowl. I dunno thats just stupid.
