Scott Wedgewood and the Colorado Avalnche hold off Winnipeg Jets for 4th straight win

Let’s just remove penalties. Welcome in to the DNVR Avalanche postgame show live from the Toyota Lounge powered by your front range Toyota dealerships in the winners lounge and presented by bet 365. ABS take down the Winnipeg Jets 3 to2. J Mike and Rudo coming to you to talk all about it. And if you only look at the five on five play, the ABS were near immaculate in this game. >> Yeah, we didn’t exactly get the breakout performance from the power play that we were clamoring for pregame, did we? >> Uh, no. I borderline the worst special teams night of the season for the ABS, I would argue. >> Yeah, I mean, I’m sure we’ll get into it too much. I don’t want to distract us before we do the 60-cond takeaway and and all that. But I uh >> I put in my notes regression question mark, so we can we can leave that as something to kind of to linger on and then we’ll get back into it. >> Question mark might be kind, but you mentioned the 60second rundown. Let’s make sure we hit that. First period, probably the best period of the game for the ABS, which is a little bit unusual. Uh, but they do take care of business at five on five. They look like the better team. They do have to kill off one penalty, which they do a great job of. And then they score twice. One of them a little bit of a fluky one from Brent Burns. You get a good bounce, but the other one just an outright great play from your two best forwards. McKinnon feeds Nas on a two-on-one, and NIS finishes nicely against Connor Halib. The ABS have a two- lead and are in the driver’s seat because of that for the rest of the game. The second period at times, I do think it felt like the ABS let their foot off the gas, but five on five was not the problem. Like I mentioned, the ABS get two and a half power plays in the second period. They don’t just go for, they go negative one on their three power plays in this game. Almost all of that coming in the second period, including the negative one, a shorty that Winnipeg scores under a minute left in the period. just tough to swallow. Third period, the ABS score early to make it 3-1 and are able to hold on to that. I’m overtime, but uh the penalty kill relinquishes one as well to make it 3-2, which is your final score. Um yeah, I I know I’m going to sound really really annoyed and I think justifiably so with the special teams in this game, but realistically, you just beat the Winnipeg Jets three nothing at five on five tonight. you you got your top line scores, your defense produces a goal, even if it is a bit fortunate, and then your game-winning goal comes from a depth guy. I I don’t know how much more you can ask out of the ABS when it comes to five on- five play. >> Yeah, I mean, I I had in my notes that I feel like this was a a more dominant showing than 32 would necessarily indicate. I feel like >> a couple of untimely mistakes on the ABS side really came back to burn them. Credit Winnipeg for really throwing the kitchen sink at at Colorado in the second period and and making this a game and even after the ABS get the insurance goal for continuing to to fight back in it and I think we saw an inspired effort. You know, we talked about that pregame. What type of >> of showing would you get from the Jets? They they they played like an an inspired team and they got a great performance out of Hellbeck, but the ABS grinded it out. The the frustrating thing though is it’s just same old same old when it comes to this power play if if not frankly again regression. It was it was a pretty alarming showing despite the fact that you basically dominated this game five on five and it was a one-goal game but you were definitely the better team. >> Yeah. And and I think there’s a fair argument to say maybe the ABS deserved better. Helluck played pretty well at five on five. The ABS probably could have won this game four, five to one, two, three, whatever. Had a couple of pucks gotten past Hella Buck or he was a little bit weaker. But Hlebuck made the saves he needed to to keep it close at least. And then I you said regression with a question mark. This is regression with an exclamation mark for me. I mean, every step of the way here, you’re trying to give the ABS, or I’m trying to give the ABS the benefit of the doubt with the power play. It’s like, all right, you know, last game it took him four tries, but they did score. And that power play goal ended up being important. In the Nashville game, they technically scored a power play goal, even if it’s six on four. I I tried not to lean into my pessimistic leanings like I normally do after the last game with the power play, but tonight is the exact problem. I No one cares if your power play is good for one game. Yeah, you scored four power play goals against New Jersey a month ago. Awesome. Great night. But if you can’t consistently be effective with your special teams, it’s not gotten better. There is no improvement to be marked here. And I’m out of ideas. Like the ABS have tried everything but take the top guys off the power play. That’s the only thing they haven’t tried at this point. So at what point do you just have to do that? I don’t know if you can is the tough part of how do you balance that emotionally in the locker room of the statement that it would be to take those top guys off? I mean it do you think McKinnon is mature enough at this stage of his career that that would be something that he would be able to roll with and respond or is that the type of thing that potentially I know you’re really trying to create a spark and and this really could be the pitfall of the ABS in the end. So I understand the the urgency of of needing to solve this but I just fear that that could potentially create more problems than it would be worth in the end. I don’t know like where where are you at with that? Like I I guess at some point the results are the results and you have to try something else. But I don’t know. I don’t know how you balance that emotionally from a coaching standpoint. >> And a fair statement. The ABS have just won four games in a row. They’ve lost two games in regulation this season. Should you really be punishing your players when they’re playing this? Well, there’s a very real argument to say no to that. Would McKinnon take it poorly if he got pulled off the power play for a little bit? Yeah, I absolutely think that he would. I also think you might still have to do it. This is not a Mac, we’re we’re pulling you off the power play permanently. This is a Mac, we’re taking you off the power play for a game because you guys suck. You guys are horrible on the power play. You just had a game where you guys went negative one for three and none of them were particularly dangerous. You had maybe one real dangerous chance on all three of those power plays. It’s not good enough. >> I >> I get it. It’s just it feels like a tightroppe act and it’s it’s absurd that we’re even in this position, right? Like the abs continue to roll. This continues to be a persistent issue. And we’re talking about the possibility of taking a guy off who’s going to score 60 goals. I think he’s going to score 70. And we’re talking about taking him off the power play. This this whole >> How many of those are going to be on the power play, though? Like >> I know it just it breaks my brain that we’re even that this is a hypothetical scenario that we were talking about and it’s not even out of the realm of possibility. This isn’t some like crazy thing we’re concocting. I mean the the power play is a mess. It’s an absolute mess. And and the one thing that you kind of were able to have some pride in or at least feel better about I guess is what I’m trying to say was the PK which had been pretty effective for a lot of the season. And when you have a power play that’s completely absent and you also struggle on the PK, like that is potentially how we start to see the ABS, you know, drop some of these games that have gone their way over the first half of the season. >> Yeah. And and I don’t even think it’s the PK’s fault. The breakdown on the goal against was really bad. Coverage horrible, puck management, horrible, bad penalty kill. But the ABS have put themselves in a situation where if their PK is anything less than perfect, they lose the special teams battle. >> Special teams. >> Yeah. And that’s not reality. I know the Az have had the best PK in the league. It turns out when teams have an extra guy, they’re supposed to score sometimes. Like >> other teams do it. I I know we can’t seem to figure it out, but I I do know that it is possible. I’ve seen it with my eyes. I watched it happen tonight. And so, yeah, a little bit of regression from the PK, I think, is somewhat expected and it’s not even that big of a deal. It’s the power play that needs to figure it out and step up and help a little bit more and certainly not give up short-handed goals. I a bad power play is one thing. >> Yeah, you >> What’s Phil doing there, man? >> Dude, he’s asleep. I I don’t I have no excuse for him. I know Evan, shout out Evan Ral, tweeted about it. Apparently, he had been on the ice for like over two minutes at that point, which like, >> okay, you’re tired, sure, but like he I don’t know if he was just on the moon or he just lost sight of the puck and wasn’t sure where it went, but he’s just asleep at the blue line and watches a guy skate right by him. I mean, that’s bad. And if and if the thing is, oh well, he’s been on the ice for so long, get off. You can get off the ice at any time. Kale does it all the time on the power play where he feels like he’s out of gas. Just skates to the bench and Devont Taves comes on. So, I don’t know what happened there, but not Kale’s best for sure. >> It’s going to happen. It was just one of those scenarios where you’re sitting there watching it and I’m like, what was he even trying to accomplish in in that situation? >> Yeah, that he was nothing. He was doing nothing there. I really don’t have an answer for it. The thing is, yeah, I’m upset with the AB special teams tonight, but if you can take special teams and put that into a little box and have it be your anger box over here, the rest of the game I loved. The ABS were awesome for significant portions of this game. And it’s not a super high event game. The ABS didn’t really put down the hammer and put 40 shots on a team like they’re capable of, but they held Winnipeg to 22 shots while the ABS led for pretty much the entire game. I whatever the first seven minutes or whatever they weren’t leading, but the ABS played from ahead in an intelligent way, at least at five on five, and took care of business. It’s not pure domination, but it’s the way to grind out wins long term in the NHL. >> Yeah. Yeah, I mean the game was never really in question. You had a nice push there from Winnipeg, which is is to be expected, especially after they >> they pull within one, but >> Yep. >> I I feel like the response was great from the ABS. This game got pretty chippy there. I’m sure we’ll talk more about Manson at some point. I just >> I love the smoke that that guy brings. AJ, I think quote tweeted me, said he’s the smoke monster from from Lost, which I thought was hilarious. Yeah, but I I think you got a lot of quality play from a lot of different guys tonight. I mean, Parker Kelly, you look at some of the plus minus numbers, I think he’s plus two, Josh Manson was plus three. Like, there was just a >> a lot of guys that I think had pretty solid showings. >> Yeah, I just to run down some of the advanced statistics, not a single player on the ABS was below even on possession metrics. 50% Corsy4 was the worst AB at five on five. up towards the top. You have a bunch of guys well over 60, including Sam Gerard. Uh his pairing ended up being solid tonight. And then the uh the third line absolutely excellent tonight when it comes to their possession game. Brinley Olivesson up there at the top. Thought they all played very well even if they didn’t produce the points. This ABS team, especially when you look at a team like Winnipeg, the depth is just not comparable. The ABS have four lines rolling coming at you all night long and Winnipeg has I guess you’re I guess you don’t like playing against the Shaley Valardi line like they’re hard to handle but everybody else the ABS just have the upper hand on. Yeah, I mean Shley makes me hold my breath a little bit when he gets going there in the zone and and he’s >> really good goal scorer, but I I think what makes this ABS team so relentless is I mean like that Brent Burns goal is kind of the perfect example, right? It’s just a veteran player putting the the puck on net. Keto doing some dirty work up up in the front creates the goal. I love to see that from him and that was after he had kind of created an opportunity on a on a breakout chance. So, just the relentlessness is is a phrase we’ve used a lot when it comes to this squad. And and I think that’s a big part of their inevitability, which is another thing we’ve said pretty consistently with this team. >> And to back up that inevitability, height chances at five on five, ABS 8 to4. They win that battle handily. Expected goals 2.18 for Colorado, just 1.11 for Winnipeg. They the ABS can beat you in different ways. Yes, there are nights where they’re going to speed bag teams and score six, seven, eight goals, whatever. But tonight, they just absolutely smothered Winnipeg at five on five. Winnipeg got what they wanted on special teams and it just didn’t matter because the ABS took care of business where it where it mattered more. I think that’s the one benefit to when you are just very clearly a gap ahead of basically everybody you play in five on five is you’re going to be on five on five far more frequently in most matchups than you are, you know, in special team scenarios. But it it’s just going to be the great equalizer in in a tough stretch at at some point in this season. And it hasn’t really come back to to bite them at this stage, but >> it’s the one thing you’ve got to nitpick over at this point. And it’s a pretty fortunate position to be in if you’re the ABS. 12 straight home wins like 21 and four or whatever it is over the last 20. I mean, they’ve just been insane. >> 57 points on December 19th. >> I you can’t you genuinely cannot find many teams that have ever done better than that. So, in the hundred years of the NHL, uh we do need to take our first break of the show here. So, let’s make sure we’re shouting out some of our sponsors as the holidays are approaching. >> Get ready, y’all, for an epic day of fun, games, and of course, great drinks on December 27th. We will be hosting the DNVR Beer Olympics at the Chicken and Pickle in Thornton. It’s free to join. All you need to do to RSVP is go to the dnvr.com/events. You guys are going to want to RSVP. Each RSVP, which is free, it comes with two free drink tickets at the Chicken and Pickle. Again, this event is on December 27th. You’ll have an opportunity to hang out with your favorite DNVR personalities, maybe even play against them in in some games. I’m I’m a mediocre beer pong player. I’m I’m not going to lie. I’m I’m fine. I’ve got decent hand eyes, so I’m not a liability by any means, but more of a beer die kind of guy. More of just a beer drinker. I don’t really need to play a game, but I’m all for it when we are out and about in the community having fun events like this. Challenge the MVR die hards. Uh, come to Thornton on December 27th again, the Chicken and Pickle. It’s the perfect way to wrap up 2025. I cannot wait to see you there. >> Always a good time at the Chicken and Pickle. If you’re more of a wings guy though, you’re going to want to get to Fire on the Mountain. It’s Denver’s favorite local wing joint. They’ve got the hormone free, antibiotic free, cage-free wings, so you know it’s the good stuff. And they have 15 different super flavorable sauces that they make from scratch, ranging from mild, when you’re a little baby like me, and insanely hot if you actually like the crazy stuff. Whatever it is, they’ve got a sauce for everybody. Uh they’ve got a great craft beer list as well, killer cocktails, bunch of other amazing handmade appetizers, dressings, and otherwise. They’ve got two walkable and bikable locations here in Denver. If you’re not into the wings, they even got Wagu beef blend burgers. So, something for everyone. They even offer delivery now from their Wash Park store, so you can get it delivered right to your front door. They do takeout, too. And it’s not a bad place to catch a game and catch up with friends. So, get yourself over there. Make sure you’re getting in with Fire on the Mountain. They even have vegan options. There’s something for everyone. Uh they’re an official green restaurant restaurant. And since it’s somehow like 65 here still in Denver, you can get on their patios and en enjoy meals there, too. Grab $5 pints on Mondays and all day happy hour on Tuesdays. Again, they have two different locations, one in Wash Park and one in the Highlands. Make sure you visit Fire on the Mountains to get the best wings in Denver today. Second period >> patio. >> What? >> Just after all this wind, I >> might have blown away. The chairs might have blown away. Yeah, that is not a factor I counted on. Uh, second period of the DNVR Avalanche podcast. We have the three stars. I’m told Yaya did them backwards. So, slacker Yaya. We’ll do them backwards. Starting off, we have the man, the myth, the legend himself. First star of the game, Josh Manson. Come on, man. >> On the ice for all three of the ABS goals. He goes plus two or plus three on the night. Uh has two assists to kick in and all of that and his best highlight was him beating the pants off somebody. >> What can’t he do? >> I know. >> That’s that’s a tough one to swallow. Like I I get standing up for your guy. I didn’t feel like it was an unnecessary hit or you know or anything. That’s clean hit. >> Levels the dude. his teammate, you know, comes to to step in and he gets a nice little, you know, taste of of the fist as well. He’s he’s been on another level these last couple of weeks. I think that’s eight points now in December for him. I’ve I’ve been really impressed with his >> just overall impact for this team. And I don’t know, I I just think he and and Landy out there, it it just kind of gives this team and an an element of [Ā __Ā ] you, if you will, like for a lack of a better term. and they can use some of that at times. >> It it’s for Manson especially, you know, heading into December, it felt like the Manson Burns pairing was playing maybe their worst hockey of the season for the ABs. The ABS are winning anyway because they can just afford that and it’s ridiculous. But after a bit of a downturn, a handful of poor games from that pairing, Manson has turned up the wick and and is playing some of his best hockey of the year like you mentioned with the eight assists. But this is now multiple games in a row where, you know, the Marchment thing technically wasn’t a fight, but really it was basically a fight if Marchman didn’t run away. Um, and then you have a real proper fight tonight, which he absolutely clobbers the guy. And for one, if you’re going over to fight Josh Manson, like be ready. Manson turns around and was like, “Oh, we’re fighting. Okay.” And just starts punching that dude and he was not prepared. Uh so yeah, maybe you know guard your head a little bit, watch yourself out there. But but this is exactly the version of Josh Manson that you get when he’s at his best and no real notes beyond that. No complaints. It’s good stuff from Josh. I love it. Um second star of this game goes to Scott Wedgewood. And I don’t know that Wedgewood had a huge workload or anything, but he did the thing where when tasked with making saves, he made a couple of big ones. He did what he needed to do. And again, at five on five, none given up. The goals he gives up are on a power play, which happens sometimes, and a short-handed breakaway. You can’t put either of the goals on him. He goes out, does the job, and frankly outdles Connor Halabuk. So wedgie for Vzna, I guess. Wedgie for team Canada, Wedgie for Vzna, give him all the accolades. It’s been such a cool story. And I mean, the the nice thing if you’re him is even the the one puck that kind of got away from him in the crease of makes a great defensive play. I mean, again, the >> the depth of this team and the uh >> kind of the connectedness of of how they kind of elevate each other. It’s >> it’s cool to see. And I I mean Wedgewood I >> again like we’ve complimented the dude for three months straight at this point, but it’s >> you you keep waiting for Cinderella’s, you know, carriage to turn back into a pumpkin, right? And so far, man, that thing’s still sparkling. We’re still rolling around town. You know, he’s >> he’s big pimping out there. It’s been cool to see. >> It’s it’s fun time to watch the ABS have two goalies that they completely trust. And I I hate that we keep comparing them to the 22 team, but that’s something they haven’t had since 22. Your goalies have been question marks for the last three years, and now they’re not. They make the three stars regularly, and you love to see it. Um, third star, I went with Parker Kelly. J Mike, you mentioned the depth. The game-winning goal comes from your depth. Yeah, I know it’s initially a shot from out high, but Kelly’s the one to get the tip on it, and it’s the reason the ABS have a bit of an easier time in this game. Yeah, you can be frustrated that the ABS needed that goal at all because special teams let them down, but ultimately, how many teams can leave a game saying, “Hey, one of our fourthline guys just won the game for us.” Like I I know it’s not as straightforward as that, but it feels like the ABS get that conversation somewhat regularly. >> It’s got to be so annoying if you’re some of these opposing teams to be like, we we’re plus two in special teams and we lose because Josh Manson puts the puck on net and Parker Kelly finds to tip it in. And it kind of feels like a play that’s representative of what you love about both of these guys. I I think both the the Burns attempt and the Manson attempt are kind of a mindset that maybe you should embrace a little bit more on the power play. Sometimes good things happen when you just put the puck on net and you don’t try and get too cute. >> Not trying to sound like a broken record here tonight, but I mean it’s just funny that they do these things so consistently all game long and then the 10 minutes a night or whatever it ends up being where you’re >> should be in a position to do it even more. You just don’t. But hey, I I I love what we’re getting out of Parker Kelly right now. And I I like when you see guys like him and and Kee and and some of those kind of grinders get rewarded for the little things they’re doing. >> Yeah. And it’s not you’re not looking at these guys and and having too many problems either, right? Yeah. I you can have problems with Kale Mar because of the special teams bad goal. You can have I think you want Jack Drury to maybe win that face off on the penalty kill. I really don’t know that there’s a ton the ABS are going to do there. Coverage back door is bad. Sure. But set plays happen. It is what it is. And then you look at five on five and you you’re not saying, “Oh, well, you know, they’re just doing okay out there.” Parker Kelly’s scoring you goals. Your third line’s your best possession forward line. You’re you’re not just getting by with the ABS depth because, oh, it’s it’s holding its own. It’s actively making you a better team. And are they Nathan McKinnon? Are they Marty Nus? Are they going to make the allw world play to get you a goal? No. But they’re just going to grind and grind and grind. And every so often that grinding is going to turn into a goal. And it’s happening regularly enough for the ABS this year that I don’t even think it’s a stretch to say no other team is really as close to deep as Colorado is. >> Yeah. I mean, I don’t even know who you would put in the conversation. No one is who I would put in there. I if I I mean I if Carolina’s healthy maybe that that’d be the only one that really comes to mind. >> I think there are a lot of teams who have good, you know, top six forward, you know, their top couple lines are are good. There aren’t a lot of teams that have the type of consistency out of the third and fourth lines that the Avalanche do on a night. I mean, it’s every game. It’s every game at this point. And those are the three stars, but I wanted to to jump off and make sure we talk about one other player in Brent Burns as the guy who scored the first goal of the game. It’s checking the stat sheet with Dick Sporting Goods here. Yes, Brent Burns is lucky goal absolutely, but he also ends up plus two. Uh the Manson Burns pairing pretty much dismantled Winnipeg by themselves to a certain extent tonight. And that is again not your top guys. I I think Burns played under 17 minutes total tonight and he still is extremely effective. The ABS don’t have to necessarily write a hot hand. We’ve talked a lot about how good Jared Bedar has been at at playing the guy who’s going a little bit more. But the ABS can also just have a second pair and go out and have a regular night and stomp you into the ground. Burns is an interesting one. Manson, I think, you know, the ABS world is pretty acquainted with. They know what they get. They know the highs. They know the lows. They know what it looks like. But Burns has come in and he frankly, he looks more like he’s 31, not 41. >> I think he’s been rejuvenated. I think there’s pro I think this is probably a really fun team to play on. And it’s kind of brought out some of his his best characteristics. And I think his impact offensively has been a big bright spot for this team. And then I mean there’s a lot of guys I think you could point to that have played above preseason expectation, but >> yeah, >> he just seems to be in the right place at the right times. He’s making good plays. There was even a play he mishandled the puck initially, >> went and kind of handled it and and just throws a perfect pass across the ice and it creates a high danger scoring opportunity. I don’t remember who it was for, but just the the savviness you knew was going to be there, but for him to be this consistent night tonight is it’s really been a pairing that’s I mean, what more could you ask for out of those two vets? Like you it’s not your top two guys and they would be the top two on a lot of teams. >> The way they’re playing, no doubt about that. It’s also maybe put him on the power play. Like I know you’re not taking Mar off the power play. He’s too good. But even with the mistake tonight, >> man will let it rip. They have no qualms about >> Exactly. >> Yeah. >> Burns will not think he will shoot puck. And sometimes the ABS need a little bit of that mentality. So glad to see it. Maybe maybe Burns understands that the ABS are not the Dallas Stars who I think have nine goals on 18 shots tonight. Uh must be nice for them to just shoot 50% in a hockey game. Can’t relate. Sorry. Uh ABS, it does feel like at times have to earn their goals. You know, they did shoot over 10% tonight. I can’t be mad at that. I think it was a good job, especially against a guy like Hella Buck for the ABS. So, a very well put together game >> against a team you’ve really struggled against, too. And I think you’re like 1 and five or something like that >> in the regular season at least. Yeah, they they tend to struggle against the Jets, but also, you know, the Jets are kind of bad now. So, who who knows what front that is. There is a a handful of other conversations I I want to get into here, but I I Where are we at, Tiff? We probably still have a couple minutes. We can take a second break. All right, let’s take our second break and then we’ll get into some stuff. >> All right, the holiday season is coming up. I have got the perfect holiday gift. Third period of the DNVR Avalanche podcast. I did say we were going to talk about a couple of things, but uh I also want to hear from head coach. So, let’s hear Bednar talk about a few things first and then we’ll jump off from there. >> Any questions for head coach Jar Bedar? Go ahead, Eric. just uh I guess what are your overall thoughts from that early jump start to the short-handed goal against getting it back in the third? >> Yeah, well I love their game five on five, you know, like first period I thought we could have been up more. Second period we’re really good again. Um pro one of our better defensive efforts of the year and physical and spent some time in the Dzone in the second period but like didn’t give up any dangerous chances. five on five really. Um, made a mistake on the power play, gave up the short-handed one, made a mistake on the penalty kill, gave up a quick power play goal, but besides that, I liked their game. I thought it was like really solid. >> Evan, then Jesse, >> I know Parker’s not here to score goals mainly, but he’s almost up to his career high already. Like, what difference have you noticed from him from last year to this year? The second year? Well, from the time we moved him to wing last year, he’s been a really good player, right? And they’ve obviously found some chemistry, those four guys, if you include OC, regardless of which three are playing on the line. Um, they’re just such a good solid defensive line. They work really hard and they’re always connected as a group. They seem to be in tune with one another and, um, they’re I mean, they’re creating scoring chances, too. They don’t score easy, but that line had two two tonight, right? And um like the other night in Seattle, I think they were, you know, 97% expected goals, four percentage. So, they’re winning the shot attempt battle. They’re getting to the net front. I mean, they’re hard to play against and we can play them against anybody. They played against Shaley tonight. I mean, they’re playing against their matchup and sometimes against the top lines on other teams and still getting it done. Jesse and then we’ll go with Ryan. >> Uh coach, what’s something you’d want to see your power play do differently to maybe find some more consistent success? >> Yeah, I don’t know. Tough question. Like I really liked our first power play again tonight. Problem is then there’s one that I don’t like, right? And we make the mistake on it which makes it a little bit even even worse. But um yeah, that’s a tough question cuz depending on which power play I look at is whether I like it or don’t like it and what I like about it and what I don’t like about it kind of shifts around a little bit. >> Ryan, then John, >> do you believe the PK needs to make a few adjustments or do you feel like the issue is with taking perhaps too many penalties in key moments? >> Yeah, I don’t know. We’re second in the league on the penalty kill. So, they’re make adjustments every night depending on the personnel that we’re facing. Um I I just feel like they’ve been rock solid all year for us. You’re going to give up a goal here and there at the man advantage tonight. We made a mistake off the face off. They got a little bit of a lucky bounce to get it into the middle guy and then they execute on the next play. So it’s going to happen. You’re hoping that when you make a big mistake like that that your goalie comes up with a save and they’ve been really good in that area. That one was pretty tough to come up with. Obviously he’s alone in the back door. So, um, but overall, I feel like the PK has been dialed right in. >> John, then Bailey, >> do you have to guard against maybe that you’re playing so well that teams are going to try to test your discipline or self-control and antagonize and maybe mix things up and make it difficult in other ways? >> Um, well, we haven’t seen much of that. Um, but you have to be prepared to be able to win whatever games being played, right? So, I mean, we kind of talk about all those things like, you know, Seattle will throw something different at us than Winnipeg and Dallas will throw something at us different than Minnesota, you know, like it’s just everyone plays to their identity and they have a certain style and you kind of know what it is and you’re prepared for all of it. Um, and then sometimes games will just take a turn in a different direction, but you got to be you got to be ready to adjust and play on from there and win the game that you’re that you’re playing on that given night, whatever style it is, right? And that that’s what I like about our team. Like, we’re playing teams that are playing really hard and competing hard and we’re right there with them and still finding ways to get the job done. >> You’re good, Bailey. Cory, >> uh, have you ever uh, landed a punch while laying on the ice in a game? And then all but more importantly just the way is is it too far to say like this is the best Josh Manson has played for you like in the last >> Well, he’s playing well and he’s playing physical and he’s involved. Um I mean he’s played some great stretches for us over the years. There’s no question. I mean there’s games where he he like when he gets on a roll he’s in one direction or the other. It usually lasts a little bit. And um you know right now he’s playing really well and all of his reads are good and it’s like when you play that aggressive style and you want to play physical and you want to be hard to play against, you got to be on time, right? So right now his timing is great. >> Colleague >> Nathan McKinn only had one shot on goal tonight and I mean just what can you you were talking about you know that fourth line really stepping up. Yeah. Yeah. >> What can you say about the depth and just the the fact that those guys don’t play as many minutes as Nate does, but still getting it done? >> Yeah. Well, I mean, that’s what you need to win, right? Your your top guys aren’t going to score all the goals every night. And um sometimes it’s a matchup, sometimes one guy on the line struggling, sometimes it’s could be any number of reasons, right? So, I mean, you got to have other guys step up and get the job done. and you maybe you’re tying one matchup and winning a different one that you didn’t expect to, right? And that’s what our fourth line did for us tonight. >> Finish there. >> Follow up on Cory’s question. Mincson said that, you know, he credits this game this year to just being healthy. You’ve had years with Manson where he’s been healthy. You’ve had years where he’s been in and out of the lineup. Like, is it more than just the health for him that you’re seeing stick out for this play? Uh again, like I I maybe you guys aren’t giving him enough credit for some of the past some of his past play. Um I’m really happy with the way he’s playing. Don’t get me wrong. I just I’ve seen it before and I’ve seen it in large stretches before. Um but there’s no question that in order to play your best, you have to feel your best. So I mean, if he’s feeling really good now and and that’s helping him, then yeah, I can agree with him. >> Okay. Thanks, sir. >> The power play remains a mystery. We go from the head coach to the in arena reporter, the courtesy call herself, Bailey, joining us live. Bailey, random question. Have you ever been in a fight? >> Never in my life, unless you count karate growing up, but that’s like in a controlled environment, so I I I don’t know if I’d count that. >> I don’t think that counts. I don’t think the abs ever have to fight anymore either because of Josh Manson. That’s where this was going mostly. >> I I was going to say if I ever have gotten in a fight like I I’m thankful it’s not against a Josh Manson. Holy moly did he throw down today. >> Yeah. Not >> that’s >> not a guy anyone’s going to be asking for another fight anytime soon. I I predict >> to be as graceful as he was about it today, too. throwing things from the ground. Like I I mean it’s it’s impressive. So >> yeah, I think if I tried to throw a punch on skates, I’d fall over immediately. So I I I envy that. More than just that from Josh, though. Is there We gave him first star tonight. I think there’s an argument and this is maybe needling Kale Mar a little bit, but has Josh Manson been their best defenseman over the this I guess it’s a four-game win streak? Uh I in terms of being a spark plug and him being exactly who you need him to be. Yes, absolutely. In terms of being their best defenseman, I don’t know if I would go that far, but that’s not like that’s not a knock against a Josh Manson who I think is having the best stretch of his season so far. >> Um I mean he’s he’s doing all of the right things. He’s getting in all of the right places. He’s winning board battles. He’s adding grit and bruising where it needs to be added. I I mean, this game, it seemed like he for the most part had everything he needed to under control. And it like he he’s spearheading a lot of that emotional control that’s kind of going up and down as this game goes through. The grit, the chippiness starts to set in a little bit. And there Josh Manson is exactly where you need him. So, like that’s I I think a really important trait that I mean you guys just heard Bednar say it is a little bit of an underrated part of his game that like he he really adds and honestly like I mean tonight especially like he’s driving some offense >> as well too. So like there’s there’s those opportunities to sit and look at Josh Manson under a bigger microscope and say like like he’s doing really good things for this team right now. We need like a better like manal is a great nickname, but we need a better way to classify his impact because like enforcer in a traditional sense is too it’s like an oversimplification of what he brings to the table >> with what Baileyy’s talking about there. Like he’s >> he’s a far better overall hockey player than that. But it does feel like he’s kind of the the one who serves justice, if you will. Like I I don’t know. Like the judges would be lame. Like the manal already is cool, but he needs he needs something like that that like when >> he could be a talented manal. That could still be a fun nickname. >> I like it. >> Uh my nicknames are horrible. We’ll end up with Juice Lord again or something. So I’ll refrain from uh coming up with an option. >> It’s stuck. The people the people spoke and it’s stuck. Uh chat talking a lot about Landisk. First of all, chat, get us to 100 likes here. What are we doing? Come on. We can we can make it to 100. I want to do winners. >> Appreciate home wins. We’re have to beg for likes now. >> I’m saying get it together. Chat asking a ton about Gabe Landisk talking about his end of the game. And I think we’ve seen this over a couple of games recently now where it almost feels like Landy has become the closer, the trusted guy when you have a onegoal lead to go out there. night. He pins that puck in the offensive zone for what felt like an eternity to just kill clock. I >> I know we’ve had this conversation once or twice before, but I’ll ask it again. Is he all the way back? >> I would say this is about as back as Gabe Land as God could get without, you know, going on a giant heater. I mean, this is exactly what you want from your captain. Um, and and even outside of this too, like the full 60, you see a Gabe Landiskog who is fully invested in this game, not just as the hockey player, but as a person, too. You see him getting frustrated when things maybe aren’t going the way that they should for his team. And that’s that that’s classic Gabe Landisk. So, knowing that you have that version of him back, we we talk about spark plugs all the time. We talk about guys kind of stepping it up and being that piece to kind of shake momentum and get things going. And I feel like on any given night that usually can be a Gabe Landiskog who is always standing up for his guys, always having conversations with the refs, always doing what he needs to do as captain on the ice. Like that that’s the Gabe Landiskog effect. It’s what he does. So if that’s as back as that’s going to get, like consider me pleased, especially in a game like this. Yes. >> What are your thoughts on the second line as a whole? Because it feels like they kind of deserved a goal tonight. >> It Yeah, there there were a couple different opportunities that I felt like especially at Brock Nelson was kind of robbed >> tonight. Um and it it like I looked specifically to the second period as well where Connor Heluk was just an incredible force out on the ice. It felt like there were a lot of opportunities that maybe should have gone the ABS way and Connor Hella Buck’s out there doing Connor Hella Buck things and there’s really nothing you can do about that. I personally really loved how the second line performed tonight. >> It was a weird one for me. At times it felt like maybe the second line had a puck bobble or two, but I Yeah, Hella Buck robbed that line multiple times. I that that’s part of the deal. And you look at that AB score first, AB score second in this game. How important is that? Especially against a team that has a Connor Hobbuck, a guy that you know you’re probably not going to get a couple to go tonight. You you might have to scrap and claw to play from ahead against a player like that. Have the ABS should the ABS look to do that more? I know they’re always trying to score first, but it felt like there was a little extra ump tonight. How do the ABS consistently do that? I guess I got to my question finally. Jeez. >> I think the biggest piece of that is depth and knowing that you can expect your top guys to perform. I mean, you get a goal out of a Martin NES tonight. You get that. I mean, that was a beautiful connection from that top line. So, I I mean, they get going, but you also see a Parker Kelly >> get on the board, too. And I think that’s really really important in a game like tonight where you can get that contribution up and down the lineup. your your entire lineup for the most part contributes tonight. I look at a Brent Burns as well. You get your blue line on the board. Uh Yel Kir Ronto with his second assist of the game or of the season. Like that’s th those are kind of huge contributions that really matter in a game like this where you’re maybe trying to to hold on to your lead for dear life and they’re making it you’re getting that contribution from them to at least hold on to it and and make sure that that’s that’s what you’re getting. But those those early goals too like again that early goal from a Parker Kelly early in the second Oh, >> well, >> those are things that set momentum. >> We’re back. We’re good. >> There we go. No, those are the kinds of things when you when you get your top line scoring the way that you do, and get those two early goals in the first, you get that early goal in the second. Those are the kinds of things that set momentum >> and and that’s that’s what you look for. Or early goal in the third, I bet. But yeah, like things like that set momentum and change the course of the game. And as long as you can get that going and you’re getting that from all across the board, >> like that that’s awesome. >> We talked pregame the ABS against the Central Division. Their record is fine. A win tonight helps that a little bit. It ends up being another close game. Are we happy with a wins a win tonight or do you want to see the ABS dominate some some central division opponents a little bit more especially with a couple of them coming up? >> Dominating would be great, but you always I feel like know in the back of your head like these divisional matchups are going to be a little more of a grind just because you’ve got you’ve got those guys who are wanting to get a leg up on those matches that maybe just mean a little bit more. And in in talking with some of the guys too, especially getting a hella buck back. >> Um, and that that changes the identity of a team like Winnipeg who maybe hasn’t had as great of a start to their season as they did last year, but certainly still keeping themselves in some sort of conversation. So, I I think when when you’ve got a situation like that, you’re getting the backbone of your team back. It it’s bound to be chippy. I I personally love watching these kind of gritty back and forth games. Like it’s it really feels like the kind of hockey you’re going to see later on in the season. And as long as they can continue to pull out wins like this, I mean maybe you’d like to see that in a more dominating fashion, but a win is a win. >> Absolutely. >> Well said. Yeah. >> That’s all I got. Bailey, any final thoughts on this one before we get you out of here? >> No, nothing from me. >> There you go. Abs vibing, feeling good. We’ll let you go. I don’t get to do a winner shot in front of you this time because you’re not to 100 likes yet, chat. So, she lucks out this time. Uh, we appreciate you. This the courtesy call from Bailey Curtis. If you’re not following her on Twitter already, go get it. Bailey with two Y’s. Curtis, >> if you’re not following Bailey by now, >> slacking slacking on that front. Um, >> have a great night you guys. >> You too. ABS are a hockey team that is so good. that we have to like dive into these conversations of like, oh well, they didn’t dominate enough. Like that’s that’s the nitpick point that we are on every facet of the ABS except for the special teams. I think you can take the entire ABS lineup up and down the lineup and say all of them played pretty well at least at five on five today. And that starts with the top guys, right? Marty Nes didn’t even make our three stars, but the only player to beat Hella Buck clean tonight is Marty. >> That goal was so nasty, man. Such a perfect execution and in transition, too. >> Yeah. I mean, that’s like I don’t think the game was necessarily about the top the top guys and in the same way we’ve gotten accustomed to, but I think again that kind of speaks to what we keep coming back to, which is just the the depth of this roster and and how how overwhelming they are. And like it only takes one or two plays for a Marty Nichas or a Nathan McKinnon to completely flip the game on its head. And we see that like how many times do we come here and be like, >> “Oh, I don’t know. It was probably like a C++ night from McKinnon. He had three points and two goals and you know, like it’s just it’s what they do. >> It’s what they do. I It’s why they’re superstars and I’m not or anyone else in the league is not because I’m not in the league.” But it it’s interesting and I know well let me just ask you J Mike because we’ve had a longunning debate on this show. AJ doesn’t believe that clutch is a real thing. >> It absolutely is. >> AJ Moore takes the stance of like there are players that shrink from the moments and there are players that continue to play like they always do in those moments. Not necessarily clutch. This is a bit >> clutch by definition, isn’t it? >> Sure. I that I’m Look, I’m on the side that clutch exists. I’m all for team clutch. >> You can’t quantify it. I understand that. It’s an unquantifiable thing. Kind of like momentum. It’s hard to exactly pinpoint, but I think anybody I don’t know. That’s a That’s one that I can get. >> Let me finish your question. I interrupted you before we even got the the question. Well, I mean, I derailed us with that conversation because we always derailed that conversation, but I don’t know if I would necessarily call the McKinnon and Nature’s goal clutch tonight. But how many games do you come out of the first period or a period where the ABS play well and it’s like, well, they played well, but they only scored one. They only have a onegoal lead. You turn it into two because of your superstar players and you feel a lot more comfortable. You go back to the other night, McKinnon has points on all three goals in the ABS third period to complete the comeback against Seattle. Is there a little bit of clutch in Nathan McKinnon? Oh, I think absolutely. I think we’ve seen it all season long. That’s kind of going back to what I was just saying of it. There can be these sleepy stretches at times and they’re rare, but they happen. and they’re human where it kind of just feels like it’s it’s not an innate game and you know maybe it’s tied maybe you’re down even and then you know late in the period how how often have they come away like tied at worse or even oftentimes like up to one because of of those late goals from McKinnon then I I don’t know I think it’s tough to quantify but I think he is very clearly if you believe in in that sort of thing a guy who is clutch and I would go to what he did in the playoffs last year is a perfect example of that. I mean, some guys rise to the moment, some guys don’t, but I I I think when it becomes such a consistent thing, there’s something to it, whether you can quantify that or not. Yeah, I it just feels like something has been building with McKinnon a little bit that and you know this may well just fall under the umbrella of he’s having a ridiculously good season on his way to 60 goals yada yada yada but at times it feels like when the ABS need something it’s come out of Nathan McKinnon and I don’t know that that’s the case for tonight’s game the ABS were already winning one- nothing it just feels feels like there’s a little bit of that extra juice from Nathan McKinnon. And we’ve talked a lot about, you know, he can get mad at times and and throw a fit or whatever and and Landy has helped him maybe channel that a little bit, but it also feels like he’s picking his spots to turn up the wick this year. And there’s very little futility. When he decides it’s time, it’s time and he creates something for the ABS and the ABS are off and running with it. I just think there are certain guys across sports, certain athletes across sports. I’m not even trying to when I say guys, I’m not genderizing anything, just so we’re clear. But >> I think there are certain people when when the moment is bigger, for whatever reason, they just deliver more consistently. And I think sometimes guys that fit that bill aren’t even necessarily a McKinnon. Like for a long time I would have put Jamal Murray in that conversation on the Nugget side of a guy who’s like not as consistent game to game. This year he is. He’s taken his game to a new level. Written about that a billion times in the newsletter. Little selfplug. Go subscribe. Dnvr daily in your inbox every day. It’s free. Five minutes or less. Nice little nice little summary of what’s happening. Uh, but I I think McKinnon happens to fall under that category of he’s a generational talent and he’s also someone when when you really need a play. Maybe it’s not him scoring, but you need to create something. You you got to find a spark. He’s that man. >> Yeah, it it’s fun to watch. I’ll say that much at least. it. There are certainly times where McKinnon frustrates me and maybe he tries to make that silly pass one too many times that he shouldn’t, but then he shows up and absolutely makes beautiful plays that deserve to be acknowledged because he is that good. Um I again very happy with this game. I don’t want to make it sound like I’m frustrated. The ABS beat the Winnipeg Jets clean in regulation. We’re great at five on five. I’m happy. Third period, a little bit flat from the ABs or is that just them surviving Winnipeg’s push? >> Maybe a little bit of both. I don’t know if it was the most inspired third period we’ve ever seen, but I also feel like we saw an ABS team that was relatively in control. I think the game got chippy, especially late in that second and over the first five, 10 minutes of the third, and there was kind of a >> let’s get out of this game. Like, let’s not turn this into a melee. Let’s not have anybody take any shots in the open ice. There were already a couple of questionable ones. I thought that hip check on on Niches was borderline. I’m I’m not a rules expert, so I can’t get into the >> the other one where he catches an elbow in the jaw was worse, I think. Yeah. >> Yeah. I mean, so like this game got a little rowdy and I’m not panicking about what I saw. I I like the composure we saw from the ABS to kind of withstand it. And I don’t know if like in a pickup hockey game that holding holding the puck that long against the wall with like fly that’s considered like >> blowing that after 10 seconds in a beer league game for sure. >> Yeah, you’re getting speared or something. But it’s it’s great great greatly effective and the composure of this team even when things start to get a little you know astray here and there you make a couple of dumb mistakes. You don’t let it compound. You don’t let it turn into you know two goals in a couple of minutes or something like that. >> I really love that point because they give up the shorty at the end of the second period. Oh man, could be a terrible momentum swing. You expect Winnipeg to come out hot in the third period. don’t score on the power play, but two minutes into that third period, the ABS get their goal back. It’s 3-1. The perfect response other than a special teams goal from the ABS. Uh to not have that affect them through the intermission. Then Winnipeg gets their power play goal pretty quickly after that. And the ABS don’t crack, right? It’s not like Winnipeg just gave up after it was 3-2. That arguably the biggest push from the Winnipeg came in those five minutes after they made it 3-2. And did the ABS play great and dominate the puck and make them look like they were no contest? No. But they did enough to make sure that Winnipeg didn’t actually properly get themselves back into the game. >> Yeah, you hung on. I mean, that’s the benefit of establishing that early lead, right? is you put yourself in a position so long as you don’t completely shoot yourself in the foot that on home ice you go up you know multiple goals this team isn’t going to lose very often. >> Yep. It’s it’s fun to watch. We did get to 100 likes chat. Thank you very much. Got a winner shot here. J Mike’s got one ready to go. Some Dr. Dubs in the chat. Drank your medicine. AS getting a lot of medicine this year. not helping my diet. >> Yeah. No, it’s a lot of it’s a lot of calories right now from uh from all the winners for the team. I’m willing to make >> uh we do have a few super chats to get to here and then we’ll we’ll get into some final thoughts. $5 from B Grim. I I might have messed your name up, but worst power play in the league, but still winning with C and B game. I think I need to save up for club seats like I did for Tampa in 2022 and finals for game two. Yeah, I I think you can safely start saving for playoff tickets. I think we’re there for sure. I don’t know about cup finals. I hope so, but the odds are making the playoffs. I’m confident in that front. Uh yeah, I there’s just nothing left to say about the power play until they start consistently looking better and scoring more effectively on it. It’s just horrible. two. >> It’s the one It’s the one flaw. I mean, we What is there even to say at this point that we haven’t said 300 times in the last three months? >> And and look, I get weariness about it. I get if it looks like this, you don’t trust it in the playoffs. But if you’re going to have a terrible night of special teams, have it be on a night where you score three goals and they score none on and five on five. >> Find ways to win games. >> Generational five on five, right? Yeah. and you have time to work through these kinks >> while still winning all of your games, which is such a luxury. >> I genuinely wonder if Nathan McKinnon comes back from team Canada and they just employ team Canada’s power play after the the Olympic break. Like that might be where we’re at. >> Really intense notes, please. >> Exactly. Uh $2 from Ryan who says, “Not sure clutch is real. Unclutch definitely is.” That’s basically AJ’s stance on it is it’s it’s less guys rising to the moment and more guys shrinking. Yeah, >> I just think guys not shrinking is by definition >> clutch then >> being clutch, but it’s semantics at that point. We could go in circles >> indeed. Uh and then $5 from Tyler who says, “I demand answers. How much to dye your hair abs colors maroon and blue?” Rudo, I said a,000 bucks. a thousand bucks of super chats and I’ll dye it whatever color the chat wants. So >> your poor wife, man. >> She doesn’t care. I’ll shave it all off eventually anyway. >> Like Yeah. I mean, she’s she must be very very cool lady. >> It’s cool. She knew why I was ugly when she married me, so it’s fine. >> Hey, we all are beautiful in our own ways, Rudo. It’s what I tell myself. The ABS hockey is certainly beautiful, more beautiful than me. So, I’ll keep enjoying the ABS hockey side of it. Uh, the ABS have won four in a row. They just beat another divisional opponent. They’re at 57 points. They’re cruising at the top. I know Dallas also won tonight, but the ABS still hold games in hand on them as well as their points lead. I What’s not to love? Everything about this team, except for special teams, is it’s been the best season I’ve watched to this point, probably ever. >> I mean, the results are hard to argue with. Like, I think you could argue the >> ceiling of 2022 or even, you know, some of those all greats. That’s, you know, you could go round and round and round, you know, like trying to compare some of the all-time great Broncos teams. But I I think what this team is doing night to night, I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s December and there are two teams in Denver that have two regulation losses. The Denver Broncos and the Colorado Avalanche. And the Nuggets have a grand total of six. It’s not like they’re slouches either. >> What? So you have like 10 total home lo or 10 total losses if it gets just absurd. >> It’s ridiculous. It I one of those Nuggets ones was might have been an overtime too. I I don’t have to get into it. We can get out of here. I’m just rambling at this point. Any final thoughts? J Mike, >> uh the chat wants to know if we are keeping track of the super chat donations. We will figure that out for you guys. I promise. Um >> there haven’t been many so far. though. >> So, I know we’re not close to a thousand, so I think we’re okay there. >> We had >> Go ahead. >> I just wanted to say that I I think this team have been really impressive just the the way that they continue to grind out these games even when the the power play is a struggle and we spend 20 minutes of the show, you know, whining about it. I I just think for this team to be in the position that they’re in, it’s it’s pretty remarkable. And I just I just hope it’s not lost on on ABS fans. You know, it’s easy to become jaded or spoiled or all of the above. And we’re pretty entitled at the moment. So, try to enjoy the ride every now and then. >> I’m having a blast this year. It It’s too easy to enjoy pretty much every AS game. Even some of the losses have been very enjoyable. So, yeah, it’s it’s that type of year. And as long as it’s good, I’m going to enjoy it. I’m going to not think about the power play too much and I’m going to go home and make a video. So, this is going to be the end of the show. We appreciate y’all. Uh, we will be off for Saturday tomorrow, but of course back for the game on Sunday. 4 p.m. local start. Well, I guess it’s not. 400 p.m. Colorado start. There you go. Uh, so a little bit of a weird timing on that one, but we’ll see you there. We appreciate you. This has been the DMV Avalanche postgame show presented by Bet 365. We all silly like the mayor.

The Avalanche were dominant at 5 on 5 as usual getting goals from Burns, Necas, and Kelly which was enough to overcome some rough special teams play and keep the Avs rolling

  1. Avs are gonna burn out. There special teams are killing them. Obviously PP aint working so lets just keep sending same people.

Mack dont even do his one timers anymore.
Makar doesnt even shoot the puck.

They keep trying to force pretty passes.

  2. Chill out on the pp rudo….

The avs dont need the pp to be a dominant team, so they are experimenting with anything and everything… bedsy said they dont practice this year, so thats what they are doing every pp… i really feel like they are trying to develop something the league hasn't seen before. Is it going well? Not at all, but this team is soooo good at 5v5 that they dont care if it works or not…
They can be bad on the pp and it doesnt directly effect how they play 5v5

The pk on the other hand… that is something that can directly effect how they play 5v5 if they are bad and they know that and play accordingly, hence being tops in the league all season…

THG had this idea and im running with it

  3. Let’s just call it what it is. The PP sucks, but at the moment it doesn’t really matter and it won’t until the playoffs. And the only time in the playoffs it will matter is if we play the Dallas Stars who are currently 1st in the league in PP. Dallas is an absolute disaster 5v5 but because of their power play and their what some would consider unsustainable finishing they are the only team that could hurt us. And with the recent history between these two teams that’s the only reason the Avs PP is worrisome right now.

  4. My delusion is that the avs want to have a "secret weapon" late in the season/playoffs and have been keeping their "real PP" top secret in hopes teams legitimately treat our PP as our only true weakness so bednar can flip a switch and take advantage of teams over confidence. Like I said. Delusion. But it's fun to dream ā¤ļø
