Do you guys think the Devils will forever be the only team to truly represent New Jersey in pro sports?
December 20, 2025
As many of you know, there’s 4 pro sports teams that play in New Jersey but don’t represent it. Do you guys think this will always be the case despite the Devils having such a strong and loyal fanbase, proving that NJ could support a team?

Didn’t NJ used to have the Nets? I don’t know much about basketball admittedly
If the PWHL NY Sirens continue to play here long enough in our building, I foresee some future rebranding more representative of our beautiful state. It wouldn’t be a far stretch to call them the NJ Sirens. I’m still going to support them regardless. In regard to other sports, maybe? I only know hockey, haha.
Edit: ECHL is coming back to Trenton!
I don’t think any other team will take the NJ branding, no. The Nets left and no other league is going to put a team in NJ. The Giants and the Jets will never change from the New York classification nor do I think they should.
We used to have the Nets and ever since they moved to Brooklyn they’ve been shit. Maybe they’ll come back?
But honestly, I think NY’s and Philly’s markets are way too dominant for NJ to have another team
I am low-key hoping the Jets or Giants would rebrand for NJ. It’d make a great rivalry
I dont think so, and while we’re at it we should evict the New York Sirens women’s hockey team from Prudential because what even is that bs
I know it will never happen but I dream of a day the nets come back to NJ where they belong
I could see the Red Bulls changing to Jersey when Red Bull sells the team
For marketing reasons to start devils will be the only team cause NY sells better to ppl than NJ in the name . Then add in the fact jersey doesn’t have its own media and another factor is jersey itself is divided into so many factors including north jersey attaches itself to NYC south jersey to Philly.
It is likely. I also think there’s potential for them to not be here forever.
I hope so
New Jersey is a weird state. We’re small as hell and while we have distinctive presence, the NYC and Philadelphia markets bookend us and drag in significant viewership and fandom.
It’s not entirely surprising. Hockey only came to Jersey in 1982 and if you were in North Jersey prior to that and a hockey fan, you probably rooted for the Rangers. Same in the South with the Flyers. Plus, Philadelphia is so much closer to south Jersey than Newark or NYC that it makes sense why folks would be fans of the teams down there.
Yes. Unless the NBA rights a massive wrong, then yes, and it’s ok.
LFGD forever.
Yes. Despite us being territorial AF “We’re not g’damn NY, we’re NJ!” The north and south are completely divided as they tend to gravitate to the nearest and older metropolises.
The Devils had to pay a territorial invasion fee to move here.
The Rangers have four cups in 100 years yet there are hockey fans younger than me who will follow them instead of their actual home state’s team. The NY Jets have been failing generations of fans and somehow maintain a fanbase faithful enough to not relocate the team out of OUR state. The Giants will never be NJ’s team with them being The New York Football Giants officially. The Sixers are owned by our owners but they’ll never move them here with their new arena plans. The Nets were brought in from NY, spent years in mediocrity before finding some scuccess, only to head back there. We’re the birthplace of baseball but we’ll never have an MLB team because there are just too many teams in the area with well-established time and fan-bases.
We are fortunate to have one team we can call OUR own AND has had a great amount of success.
Yeah and that’s fine
If we limit this to the four top leagues, then there will never be a team besides the Devils that call New Jersey home.
This is a thing I rarely think about and definitely don’t care about. I think state pride stuff is weird.
Yes.
I could maybe see the Red Bulls or Sirens (if the pwhl adds a 2nd expansion team to NY) rebranding to NJ but that’s still very unlikely. Other than that I doubt it’ll ever happen
I feel there should be a documentary on why the Devils succeeded and the Nets failed in NJ. It’d be interesting to watch and maybe future teams can learn something from it.
I feel like Devils’ branding was fully invested in the state from the logo to the name, while the Nets branding was very bland and was outshined by the New York Knicks.
Ownership definitely took a part too. Devils’ first owner chose not to sell the team to Nashville despite the huge profit while the Nets front office was trading starting players for cash and photo-copiers (yes they literally traded a player for a photo-copier)

Anyway, $4 a pound.
