The Red Sox have some competition within the AL East for Alex Bregman.
The Blue Jays are also showing interest in the free agent third baseman, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. An All-Star with the Red Sox last season, Bregman is also being courted by the Cubs, Diamondbacks and more, per Rosenthal.
“(Blue Jays) team officials have been in recent contact with Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, according to sources briefed on the conversations,” Rosenthal writes. “Ideally, the Jays want to add a left-handed hitter, but either the right-handed Bregman or (Bo) Bichette would fit their defensive alignment better than (Kyle) Tucker or Cody Bellinger, both of whom bat left.”
Bregman was a terrific fit on the field and in the Red Sox clubhouse last season, but opted out of his three-year deal after one season.
“Alex earned the right contract-wise to opt out and see what’s going on,” Alex Cora said earlier this month. “And we know he was very important last year and there’s a lot of leaders out there who are good players, too. So we’ll see what the future holds.”
The Red Sox have yet to sign a free agent this offseason.
