Jim Harbaugh On Injury Updates Vs Cowboys | LA Chargers

Uh Trey questionable. Um if he’s able to go, would he be back at the right tackle or would it be Poppy? >> Um yeah, we’ll make all all those decisions in the next couple days. Yeah. >> Jim, ask what do you think about Philip Rivers coming back and playing? >> Uh I think it’s great. to see any of the game that he played. No, I didn’t do that. >> Did you see any any of the game any bits of the game? >> He’s good enough to do that. How about that? I mean, that’s pretty That’s pretty amazing. >> Were you just yelling? >> Just awesome, huh? >> Were you just? >> Yeah. Yeah. I mean, not yelling. I just Yeah. Voice is a little >> I’m perfectly fine. The voice is just a little horse. Came >> after a little. No, just uh little I don’t know what it is. >> Uh questionable would be this guy up there. Um he would he would battlefield decisions they’ll be made on the battlefield and um like anything you not prognosticating that work with you know with the guys with Marco um sometimes these things happen you know at the stadium you know pregame pregame uh you know test, see what they can do. So, um, and the second piece of that is, you know, um, all options are open, you know, so, >> but that’s the main thing. They’re battlefield decisions. >> Have you seen approval from Kyle like through practice this year? Like, how have you seen his development? >> He’s been chipping away at it. like has he >> in the training environment uh practice environment? >> Do you think about him kind of similar to someone uh like how Justin was last year who maybe wasn’t up a lot who has a big impact in year two as the potential he might have? >> Um yeah. Yeah. first year players uh you know they don’t I tend to not count them out um give the opportunity you know you just coach continue to train you know and uh you know it’s like biblical almost you know you you prune you you uh you chip away at it and tend tend to the tend to the garden and and um second year sometimes a lot of the time then they produced produce great fruit. >> Is it hard at all to develop um young players who have potential while you’re also trying to you know compete for a championship in the way you guys are? >> Um not hard. No, pretty pretty uh not hard at all. I mean, you just you play the best players and you know who the best players are because they play the best and yeah, that’s now getting an opportunity in a game. Uh that would be that would be that’d be great. You know, they need have they then need to have an opportunity. So, can’t force that though. We can’t just make that happen. Um it’s got to be got to be earned. It’s a meritocracy. >> What’s the uh you guys have a board outside the locker room uh with rankings called uh >> Yeah. What is that? >> Uh that is uh that’s just something that we we track uh mainly production in games uh but also u there every day. There’s a component there. there’s a there’s a component of uh just maybe they got if they’re playing through something, you know, and still playing, then uh working through something and still playing, you know, there’s a there’s a grade there that there’s a point system. Or if they’re not, or if they’re so well trained that they uh that they’re that they’re still out there, you know, healthy the whole time, then uh you know, there’s there’s a reward for that. But two things, production, what they give to the team, who produces the most, you know, for our team in in games and uh and what they do um what they do in the a smaller percentage and what they do in the training room environment, the the uh the wait room. >> How did this where did this idea come from? >> Uh guilty was charged. Thought of it, you know. Um, we track everything, Chris. I mean, we track everything and uh, you know, we’re not a we’re not afraid to say, “Here’s the ones that are producing at the at the highest level.” So, share that with them. I share that with the I like to share it with the players. I like to share with the with the owners, with the with the personnel staff. Um, >> there wasn’t any games on there at least yesterday. when do the first rankings come out and do they change weekly? >> Uh we did it last year, but I I didn’t do it till the end of the season and uh so yeah, maybe better to put it out during the season, you know, so uh guys can Hey, I’m at 15. How do I get to how do I get to the top 10? How do I get into the top five? Um, so it’s uh and there’s some there’s some things that are graded in the in the conditioning uh their level of conditioning, their level of u strength, speed, mobility, but 70% of it is games production in games. >> Do you do you remember who was like number one last year? >> I do. >> Justin. >> Justin. system was number one last year. >> Happy to show you how we how we come up with it. Uh that’s we’re transparent. Love to >> Yeah, we can show you that. >> Yeah, it’s it’s uh Yeah, it’s um what’s the word? What’s the word? Uh the what’s the opposite? Objective. It’s much objective uh rather than subjective, you know, by position and play. How many plays they play in the game is a uh is a is a good factor. >> Formula. >> Yeah, there’s a formula. We got a formula. >> We got a formula. >> Did you come up with the formula or did you get some help from >> I uh I worked with my esteemed associate Ben Herbert and Ben Rabby and uh Lincoln Kennedy to um derive the formula.

  1. If the jags beat Denver and we win, things become very interesting…. Who would’ve thought after the jags game that even the 1 seed was a remote possibility…

  2. I was looking at the numbers between Omarion Hampton and Kimani Vidal last week against the Chiefs. And I think because Hampton has now been back for a full 2 games you have to give him more carries. If I was a betting man I would bet on Omarion Hampton before I betted on Kimani Vidal. If you look at last week Vidal carried the football 12 times for a 2.8 yard per average. The Chargers ran a total of 62 plays on offense so that's a whopping total of 20% or ⅕ of the offensive plays. He is sort of like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. One week he's shown up and has been good and the next week not much of a showing. So Omarion Hampton he's going to be more consistent week in and week out. I just know he will, he's a 1st round pick and he looks the part and you want your best offensive players that have the ball skill to be handling the football as much as possible. So putting more on his plate is going to be better for the offense, and it's going to be better for the overall efficiency of the offense. If Hampton is averaging 4 yards per carry or more. That means on average every 3 carries with the football he's able to gain enough yards for a 1st down. You're probably putting him on a pitch count of 20 to 25 carries. Not too sure if he needs to go over that in this next game against Dallas? And maybe too for every 2 receptions for a running back equals 1 carry. So for example 4 or 5 receptions equals 2 carries. Personally I think you gotta be careful of turning the offense into a one-man stunt show and than somebody breaks a leg. But it hasn't been a great rookie season for Hampton either. He started off a little slow, Najee Harris was being worked into the mix and Najee did look good until his injury. And then Hampton has been on ir for a couple of months. There's only 3 games left in the regular season and the Chargers haven't at least clinched yet. But if anybody is wondering about Omarion Hampton it's there. And he could even get better as he goes on in this season and in the future too. The thing is is if the Chargers continue to run a tandem with Kimani Vidal and Omarion Hampton that could put more pressure on your defense and it could also put more pressure on your quarterback. So to me i have to put more on Hampton's plate and especially this late in the season because you have to get him going too. He's only rushed for 431 yards this season. The Chargers have to let him get going or they might actually lose a game or two down the stretch. That's how confident I feel about Omarion Hampton, it's there. I don't feel too good if the Chargers decide to put his game on the back burner a little bit just to keep it warm. The problem with being sympathetic because Kimani Vidal has contributed to the team in a meaningful way is once guys start figuring out why Hampton isn't getting more of the workload, and Vidal has these games where he isn't making that contribution in the run game. It's not going to go over so well with the locker room I don't think if the Chargers lose. That might only bring division into the locker room and you don't want that. But it can be a good thing because you know to stay away from it. If the locker room isn't divided that means the players are confident, they're up for the task and they believe they can win. They're talking about can you wear a defense down if you continue to run the ball on them. The short answer is yeah but it can be complicated. Because who do you have running the ball and who are you playing? Some defenses are elite they may not easily wear down to where the final 20 minutes of the game every run there seems to be just a couple extra or a few more yards more than it's been earlier in the game. It also depends too who the running back is. Omarion Hampton is a guy who gets stronger as the game goes on. Exactly why some running backs get stronger as the game goes on? I think it's because defenses can or do wear down. You handed ⅕ of all offensive plays to Kimani, he did have a reception too for 15 yards, against Andy Reid and the Chiefs and Andy Reid is known for coaching up some tough football teams. He's probably one of the best coaches in nfl history i don't know if anybody realizes that? But I'm going to stick to my theory and that is Omarion Hampton he didn't get enough carries with the football to get stronger as the game goes on. 15 carries is not enough but you give him 8 to 10 more carries and let him carry the run game and see what difference that makes? I think it's going to make a difference. You know you could always throw the ball to save time on the clock and maybe punt it away and play defense. Instead of taking a ton of time off the clock and giving the other team the ball last with just enough time to score and win. Because that's what the Chiefs do is they paddle win. What is paddle win? Stay in the game and in the final stretch, the last minutes or on the last drive, row your ass off to pull ahead and win. Paddle win. It's almost like Andy Reid baited the Chargers by giving it to them on the 1 yard line with 12 minutes left in the 4th quarter. And the Chargers take over 7 minutes off the clock on a scoreless drive. You need to take 9 or 10 minutes off the clock and score a touchdown. Well that's hard to do. So there's no way some of these guys know football, and they don't know how to manage games and use the run game to win. If there was 4 to 6 minutes left in the game yeah I think you can run the clock out to win and they don't get the ball back. Listen winning nfl games is not easy man, especially against the better teams and the teams that got the better coaches. I heard guys dont like to joke around but if Brandon Staley is your coach why not crack a few jokes about my d*k and why I got more spunk than you? You ain't going to win anyway son. But if you're really busy and into what you're doing I could see why you aint got time for all the jokes. I don't think I would be joking around either, just aint got the time for it there's football games to win on Sunday or whenever the team plays. You know? And then you know Justin Herbert. I was thinking about the plays where he's sacked and when nobody is open. I think what you can do is fundamentally make up a checklist of what you would do if you drop back and nobody is open. Some of the older offenses baked in check downs to the running back. I think as a rule of thumb if it was me and it was 1st or 2nd down I'd take the check down if it was there before I would throw it away. I probably would never throw it away on 3rd or 4th down depending on whether we were punting on 4th down, so maybe you do take the check down on a 3rd down if you're going for it on 4th down or it gets you closer to making a field goal. But why take the check down on 3rd down or 4th down if you know it's not going to get you the 1st down? I know a check down on 3rd and 20 can help flip the field on a punt. But try not and get behind the sticks anyway. Killing a down on a throw away is not always the worst thing if you have another down to go to. If you're in a 2 minute offense or other critical situation of a game that might change. I thought about what if the quarterback dropped back and had extra time to throw and didn't take the check down? The running back isn't seeing what the quarterback sees. I dont think hot reads are the same as check downs, the nuances aren't the same. A check down is when the quarterback drops back and surveys the field and has enough time to throw the ball but nobody was open so he checks it down to gain yards and move the chains. And it could be to a tightend as well because I think that's possible. A hot is more like when there's a blitz, probably more than 5, and there's a hot that the quarterback can go to to get the ball out and it might be before any man in coverage can pick him up. You have to be really smart here to engineer something like that. But there's different terminologies because I think I've seen different terminologies.

  3. Chargers gotta keep their heads in game from start to finish. This isn't middle of the season where can stay focused one game and completely lose it next no time for that.
