Luke Hughes Leads the NHL in Shot Attempts That Were Blocked

  1. People gonna hate but thats some good company. Some elite players not too far off from his numbers. Js

  2. I actually think Luke stepped up defensively while Pesce was out, but this stat confirms what everyone sees watching this team. Seems weird that he struggles with this, finding space to shoot should be a strength for him. Curious what everyone thinks.

  3. For all of Dougie’s faults he does seem to have a knack for threading the needle from the point. Need to start giving Luke some tips

  4. Part of this is Luke playing minutes against better lines due to Pesce injury.

Part of it is youth and it takes time to figure it out.

But another big part of it is that opponents know that the Devils (for various reasons) struggle to score in 5v5. So every team comes in with a game plan that puts ‘block L. Hughes shots’ near the top of their list. If you neutralize Luke’s SOG, you are not worried about losing defensive structure BC the overall 5v5 offense is weak.

  5. Reminds of when people highlight Jack for having the most giveaways in the team… yeah when you’re carrying the puck into the offensive zone 10x more than the rest of the guys you’re gonna give it away a lot too. Brodeur has the most goals against for the franchise as well dude must have been ass right?

I trust that the fact that Luke isn’t afraid to shoot is a good thing, and if they are blocked that’s not necessarily bad. It IS bad if they block and go out of zone or worse lead to play going the other way, sure, but as others have pointed out he’s in good company from the perspective of shots getting blocked. Give him time to marinate and mature and I expect this to sort itself out.

  6. What is also very obvious to me is that with his vastly increased load his concentration on the o side is lower than it has been. His focus is surely his defensive game and that is 100% the correct way to do it for now. I am certain goals and points will follow in the second he has slightly more breathing room (literally) for his offensive game. Pesce will also have a huge positive impact, he was dearly missed – one can tell after the last 2 games. The d side looked way more stable despite us icing a full AHL 4th line.

Out of all the players in our reduced lineup Luke and Siegs have worried me the least. And the captain also seem to have found his game more and more.

  7. Surprised he’s only ahead by five. Would have assumed he had twice as many as the next person.

  8. > Luke Hughes: **46.76%**
    Sean Walker: 43.46%
    Matthew Schaefer: 40.65%
    Jake Sanderson: 39.80%
    Cale Makar: 39.18%
    Quinn Hughes: 38.92%
    MacKenzie Weegar: 38.34%
    Adrian Kempe: 34.82%
    Zach Werenski: 33.46%
    Jakob Chychrun: 30.98%

Almost half his shots get blocked :/

  9. Sorted by % of shot attempts reaching the goal:

    1. Zach Werenski — 47.1%
    2. Matthew Schaefer — 44.4%
    3. Jakob Chychrun — 44.3%
    4. Adrian Kempe — 44.2%
    5. MacKenzie Weegar — 43.1%
    6. Cale Makar — 40.0%
    7. Quinn Hughes — 39.4%
    8. Luke Hughes — 38.0%
    9. Jake Sanderson — 36.7%
    10. Sean Walker — 36.0%

  10. lots of good company on that list, im not sure this is a bad thing.. cale.. wereenski.. quinn chychrun.. sanderson.. all good dmen

  11. I get what you’re saying, but Quinn is up there too so he must be terrible right? What does it matter if the shots were blocked? Luke is getting pucks towards the net for deflections, tips, and rebounds. He also has a lot of ice time.

Don’t be a doomer on Luke. Give him some time to cook. The team is struggling as a whole right now. We have the talent, they’re just not meshing right now.

  12. Ngl I’ve noticed before that Luke will line up a shot that seems like it’s guaranteed to get blocked, and he’ll just rip it into them anyway 🤣🤣

  13. I think it’s clear that Luke has huge upside. It’s not an accident to be mentioned with these elite defensemen. He’s still young, lost his paired player that balances his game (the stats WITH pesce are elite) and plays a massive amount of minutes. Luke will be fine, but growth means errors.

  14. are we supposed to say this is to show how bad he’s been when in reality the vast majority of these players listed are actually really fucking good

  15. This is an interesting metaphor for our whole core, imo. We have a lot of talent that can do amazing things but we tend to fall into pretty obvious patterns (to a TV viewer). They’re definitely not nearly so obvious at ice level, but as our core has gotten famous for certain plays, other teams are studying the tape and writing a proverbial book on our tendencies. This problem plagues nearly all “young” stars in the league, but we’re at that age now that we really need to see our guys using all that dynamic ability to become truly unpredictable. It’ll never be perfect but it can definitely improve, and is the key to making us look like we did in 22-23. The league will never be taken by surprise by our speed again, but we have so much agility that we can definitely keep them off balance if we’re creative. Easy for me to say ofc.
